5.0 out of 5 stars.  WELL ENGINEERED, April 15, 2010
By Hardback (Pasadena, MD USA)
After much disappointment with a Topeak bag of similar size, I decided on the Avenir. The main problem with bags of this design is keeping the handlebar clamps from rotating forward. The latest Topeak bag uses a small cable that wraps around the bar and then attaches to the clamp. This fix is very problematic. The Avenir uses a vinyl coated band clamp that bolts to the handlebar clamp. Very effective and impressive in its simplicity. It is impossible for the clamp to rotate with this design. I installed it in under 5 minutes.
The bag itself seems to be high quality as well and is just the right size. I'm a Topeak fan and have many of their products but this handlebar bag is far superior to their model, especially the mounting hardware. If you're in the market for a handlebar bag, look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Basic and Simple, September 12, 2009
By T.F. Olson (Noank, CT)
We have two of these bags - they fit more than enough stuff for our simple day trips. Very simple to install and the one button pop-off feature makes them great to stop along the way, and then simply carry our valuables, water, cell phone, etc. Plenty of extra pockets, and easy zippers to open even when riding!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Avenir Excursion QR Handlebar Bag, September 3, 2009
By Linda (Michigan)
Avenir Excursion QR Handlebar Bag (484 Cubic Inches)This bag is great, it has enough room for a sweatshirt in the center part, and more. The outer pocket has room for house keys and wallet sunglasses, cell phone. On each side you have room for a bottle of water on each side, I love it. It has enough room for everything I would want to carry, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Requires a thick handlebar tube., May 15, 2010
By Jahf
I originally complained about the mounting hardware. Then I found the little bag of shims that had gotten stuck inside a lip in the bag. All is good with the bag now. It is exactly as advertised as far as mounting quality.

If you're looking for a bigger bag, this is probably not the right one for you. I wish now I had gotten an even larger bag. But it is quite capable for most users. Quality is fine, price is fine. Mounts should work on any modern handlebars.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bag, easy to use with lots of space!, August 20, 2010
By sillygirl
I bought this bag after reading other reviews, so I suppose I should add mine. My husband installed it for me and said it was a snap. I LOVE the quick-release function, which is not really detailed in the product description. You just push the little yellow button on top and it pops right off, but it is very secure while riding. Easy to put back on, too - slides right on and pop! Also comes with a strap so you can carry it easily wherever your bike adventure leads you - for me, often this is work or the beach. The bag holds the stuff I need to carry to be able to freshen up when I arrive at work (including a change of clothes and shoes, as long as they are small shoes like flip-flops or flats) or it's also great for a towel and sunscreen, etc for the beach. The top of the bag has an insert for a map, which is cool though I don't often use it, and the sides have little mesh pockets perfect for my blackberry. The pouch on the front is also roomy enough for my makeup bag, and that is saying something. The only minor negative is that the bottom is not flat, which probably makes it more aerodynamic, but it just sits a little funny on the counter when I'm trying to pack it up. So happy I bought this one!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Bag for the Price, August 21, 2011
By tutall
The bag mounts easily and has a strap to prevent the loaded bag from rotating forward. Good capacity in the main compartment, easy-access zippered front pocket, convenient mesh pockets on exterior sides, and see-through map compartment on top. The bag quickly clips and unclips from mounting bracket. Very functional and affordable. I bought two for 300 mile bike trip with no problems on the trip. When securing the mounting brackets to the handlebars, rotate the bag up a little. This will allow it to settle to the horizontal position when loaded.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Backpack replacement, November 1, 2010
By pfm (New Jersey)
This bag is mounted on my front handlebars. Prior to this I was using a backpack for my NYC trips. Not fun carrying a backpack in the summer, even if there is not much in it.

Hence the handlebar bag purchase. Having a handlebar bag may look a little nerdy but it beats the backpack. The mount is a nice feature. I can easily take the bag off the bike when I need to (coming over on the ferry, etc)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very handy bag, easy to install, October 11, 2010
By G. Smith (Toano, VA United States)
This is a very well-designed bag, which can hold more than I will probably ever put into it. It is extremely easy to remove it from the bike, and the supplied shoulder strap makes it handy for carrying items off the bike. I will probably use it separately from the bike as much as attached to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bag but problematic installation, August 11, 2011
By BikerMan
My wife loves the bag but the installation didn't go smoothly.
Upon tightening one of the brackets, the "arm" broke off.
So I called Raleigh (the manufacturer of the item) and they
promptly sent me another bracket -- and at no cost. However,
I soon discovered an underlying problem. The bracket attachment
doesn't fit my wife's bike stem and handlebars as intended. It
took a few modifications and some jerryrigging to get the bag on
securly and positioned horizontally.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Winner of best design., June 5, 2011
By JohnnyRider (Everett, WA)
I wish everything were designed this well. It has a strap that fits under the goose neck to prevent the bag from rotating under load. It is big enough to hold a lunch and 2 fat bottles of gatorade in a rigid bag. My only complaint is that it's not water proof. That matters, I live in Seattle!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice bag, May 6, 2011
By ExPatInAsia
I thought that this bag was going to be big. I was searching for something to help with small groceries, food carryout, a change of clothes, lunch, bike tools, bathing suit, towel etc. (not all at once but for different activities)... something to replace carrying a small backpack. I went by the reviews more than carefully noting the dimensions, which is my fault so I am not removing a star. I also didn't notice in the photo that the bag is not flat on the bottom, it's curved.. which takes away some internal space but I guess it's more aerodynamic - if you load the bag with coke cans, as I did to show size, you really have to stuff it with cans to prevent them from falling over due to the curved bottom). I uploaded photos to show this bag can hold no more than 7 standard coke cans and still have about 2 inches of headroom between the coke lids and the zipper--enough space on top for a paperback novel or two hand towels.

This bag is easy to install. It took me about 30 minutes because I made every mistake possible, figured it out and then completely removed it and started over to perfect it. It comes with all the necessary tools and the directions are easy to follow. The bag is also easy to attach and remove, which is good because I use a rack to transport my bike--I remove this bag when I'm driving. Between bike rides it stores all my stuff (with plenty of spare room) in my car trunk or the garage (I store: biking gloves, lights, hair-ties, lock, key, adjustment tools, cliff bar, medicine, towel and during a ride I add a bottle of water so I can easily drink water while I'm riding).

So this bag is perfectly fine, but I wish it was larger.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good size, Sold mount., November 24, 2010
By Robert Sanges (Massachusetts, USA)
The mount is a good design. The bracket takes up a little more bar space than I hoped, but it is very secure.
The bag has a plastic insert that keeps the shape of the bag. You will hear things rattling around against the plastic.
The map pocket is held closed from inside the bag with one Velcro tab. If you put anything in the map window that is too small, it will slip past the Velcro flap and fall into the bag. Who uses paper maps? It would be more useful if it was sized for a cell phone, GPS, or cycle computer.
The side pockets have an elastic band at the top, but do not seem overly secure. I wouldn't put anything too big or valuable in these pockets while riding.

It sounds like I'm not happy with it, but I am. Those are just things I wish were a little better.
The bike I use it on has 44cm wide road bars and there is no cable clearance issue with the STI shifters.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Avenir Excursion Handlebar Bag - Great Value For Money!, November 5, 2011
By Ian B. Cooper (Silver Spring, MD, USA)
I bought a full set of these panniers (large panniers, small panniers, handlebar bag, rear rack top bag) in 2010 and use them for occasional grocery shopping and long distance touring. I have packed them full of gear to a point that would have tested the seams, zippers and straps of even expensive bags, yet these bags have taken the punishment very well indeed. So far the bags have shown no wear at all and still look and work the same as they did when I first put them on the bike.

The Handlebar Bag has lots of space and keeps its shape better than similar bags that I've bought before (though, as with all of these bags, it does tend to sag a bit if you fill it with heavy items). The clip-on attachment system works nicely and is very secure and sturdy, even though the way it attaches to the handlebars seems a bit amateurish (it has a metal strip that is bolted on and is basically designed to bend to suit the bike).

With the amazingly low price for the whole set (you get a whole set of bags for what you might pay for another company's single pannier), even if they do fall apart in a few years, I'll be able to buy a brand new set to replace them and still not have spent the money I might have spent on an expensive set of bags that might not have lasted any longer than these.

The only problem I've found with this set is with the rear rack top bag, whose mounting system is really cumbersome. It's still a good bag, and it can be made to work well with a little sewing skill to reposition the velcro straps.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good/large handle bar bag for recreational bikers, not club bikers., October 31, 2011
By markspark (Kansas City, MO United States)
If you are new to biking, any age, any bike, then this is a good 'recreational' bag. It is LARGE to hold everything "you might" want to carry,,,, rain gear, water, eyewear, food bars, tools kits, lighter sweater, phones, keys, pills, etc. Any thing bigger would require rear wheel panniers bags. Anything smaller will not hold a nylon jacket, etc. If you are recreational, (6 to 12 mph) then the biggest bag is what you want. If you ride in high end road bikes in a club, then you already know this is 32 grams heavier than you want, etc, lol. If you want to carry as much as possible, (water, food, jacket) then this is a good choice. If you don't know what speed you ride, then you ride at 6 mph. If you know that you ride at a 12 mph, then you will still like this choice of bag. If you ride at 15 to 22 mph (on high end bikes), then you will not choose this bag. I have several bikes. This is a good big bag for recreational biking. Only thing bigger are panniers and they cost alot of bucks! As a plus, this bag is internally strengthened to stay rigid and has a map pouch on top the bag, (like 20 years ago, before Iphones maps). Summary, this bag is as good as they come for the size and weight and features. If you are new to riding alone with with one or two friends, then THIS is the bag you want. If you are a hard core biker, then you have already stopped reading this review. As a plus, I love the new high tech, push button, bag release, so I can toss the nylon bag in my car(from the rain, etc) and still store my bike outdoors.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Handlebar mount clamp doesn't work for all bars, August 20, 2011
By E. Scoles (rochester ny usa)
I will second that the concept behind the handlebar clamp (a brace to keep it from rotating around the bar when loaded) is nice, but the implementation (a weak piece of vinyl-coated steel meant to be shaped around the stem) clearly won't work on a lot of handlebars. They should have used some kind of molded nylon piece, instead -- it would have been stronger, more flexible, cheaper, and worked in more cases. I replaced the metal bar with some nylon mason's line, which will probably last longer than vinyl-coated steel. Other than that, so far it seems to work well. Would be nice if there were an easy way to stow the shoulder-strap without detaching; however, you can fold it and tuck it into the loop at the top and back of the bag.

Bag was disappointingly small when I unpacked it, but it's bigger than it looks. However, would love to see them make a bag that would easily accommodate a standard 10" netbook or tablet.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  The bag I've been looking for at a great price!, August 6, 2011
By dsct61
I've been looking for a handlebar bag since early spring and couldn't find anything that matched what I wanted, for size and for a solid mounting system. I've always carried whatever I need on bike rides in a backpack and I'm tired of the heat of a pack on my back while biking. I didn't want a rear rack mounted system because I'm often riding on dirt and a carrier would get too dusty and muddy back there.

This bag is ideal for my needs. I can pack it full of stuff for a day-long ride and it doesn't slide down thanks to a very well designed mounting bracket. I like the clear plastic pocket on top since I haul my bike to different places and am often picking up a paper map of the trail system so this is very convenient to have it visible. The quick release for taking the bag off the bike works great. This was important to me since I'll often include a short hike with my bike ride or ride into a town while on vacation to shop or have a meal.

The bag is quiet when it is packed with things, but a bit "rattly" when it is empty so I will likely take it off if I'm not going to be using it. Or perhaps just keeping a rain jacket in it at all times will keep it quiet--I haven't tried that yet.

The one thing I wish was different is the rounded bottom. Not only does this take away some interior space, but if you have the bag off to pack it in the house or to take it off the bike when you're out on a ride (if you park you bike), you can't set the bag down upright. It rolls onto its side.

Overall this is a very functional bag at an excellent price. The mounting system alone overrides the couple minor negatives about the bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great little bag, July 8, 2011
By lac
This is a great little bag for the price. It was easy to install, and it is easily removed from the bike as well if I want to carry it with me. It's big enough to carry an extra sweater and hat or for snacks, etc., but not so big that it looks ridiculous on my bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very good bag and great price, July 7, 2011
By Dougmeister (PA)
After reviewing many other bags online I was surprised at all the basic problems other bags had (leaked, etc), or they were very expensive. After a month of use so far this bag has been great. Easy to mount, and it feels secure, roomy, lightweight, but not bulky. Able to fit several items (camera, sunblock, wallet, +more) and it clicks on/off easily with shoulder strap-useful when touring. Haven't had any exposure to rain yet so can't comment. My intent is to use for daily and touring. One comment, if you check the avenir site it says the bag is 336cu...smaller than advertised. Would recommend.

Bought this bag based on other reviews here, and not disappointed.
Excellent quality of bag and mounting system. Easy to install, took only a few minutes. Very solid mount, no movement while riding. Quick disconnect easier to use than I anticipated. Planning self-supported touring this Summer, and happy to have this bag along.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product and well designed, June 15, 2011
By ahope577
The Avenir Excursion Bag has exceeded my expectations, the installation was simple and well documented. The Bag has plenty space is water proofed well and even has a mapdirections see through pocket.
The bag has a quick release from the bracket which is super simple to operate and the works well for carrying valuables.
Installation took no more than ten minutes and what I previously had to carry in a backpack can now be carried in the bag.
Outstanding product which I would thoroughly recommend

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Practical Bag, May 4, 2012
By Eleni
This bag is a good size, and took me about 10 minutes to install on handlebars with a philips screwdriver. I did have to remove the center handlebar reflector from my bike to install the bag, but the bag does have a reflector strip. There is a plastic button when pushed that detaches the bag from the handlebars, the brackets remain in place allowing me to carry the bag, then clicks back onto handlebars fairly easily. This bag is practical and has several small pockets and one large compartment.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Just what I was looking for, April 14, 2012
By Rockpride
This bag is plenty big enough for a handle bar bag and is exactly what I was looking for. I bike the GAP and C&O canal from pittsburgh to DC every summer and needed a legit handle bar bag. This is perfect for my packable rain jacket, iphone, ipod, snacks, camera, money clip, and small portable charger! It also releases by the push of a button so I can keep the bag and my valuables in the tent with me overnight!

Whether you do long bike tours, commute, or just use your bike once in a while you cant go wrong with this bag at this price!'. The only reason I gave it a 4 is bc the bottom of the bag is round and wont stand up when you set it on the table to pack it! Haha

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well as a seat bag for my Recumbent, April 9, 2012
By Lucca (New Jersey)
On my bike, this bag is not mounted to the handlebars, but on the rear seat of my recumbent. I used electrical tape to fill in the small gap needed to make it tight. Love this bag. So easy to install, even easier to remove and fits everything I need for my rides with room to spare.
