5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fully satisfied after 2 years, October 16, 2008
By Skeptic
My wife and I have used these for two years, one large set and one medium set. During that time we rode 500 miles across Germany, commuted daily to work, and I just completed a 1,000 mile trip through the mountains and across NC to the sea. Earlier I had a different brand (Trek) which used an elastic cord to fasten to the rack. I found this unsatisfactory, as the cord stretches, allowing a loaded pannier to swing and sway. The Avenir uses a strap that locks tight with a plastic friction piece. It doesn't look especially strong, but has never failed yet. I also appreciate that these panniers are quite lightweight, unlike some other brands that are recommended by full-time bike tourers. These panniers are not waterproof, but they are water resistant. The price is reasonable, they are fairly well-made, and the design is good. If you plan to tour for months at a time through all conditions, you might want something stronger; otherwise, these are a good bet.
NOVEMBER 2008 UPDATE: Based on my recommendation, my son just bought a pair of the large panniers, and reports that the design has changed. Now they incorporate an elastic strap! So my comments above appear obsolete. However, my son seems satisfied with them thus far on his daily commute.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Large pannier + large feet = bad combo, November 30, 2008
By Be Active (MO)
I purchased the large Avenir Excursion panniers, but had to return them because my heel hit the bag, even with the bags pushed all the way back on my rack (Blackburn MTB rack). I had to purchase the smaller model (1464 cu in) instead and they work great! I really liked these panniers, but would not recommend them for people with larger shoe sizes.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Size does matter - but not feet, June 5, 2010
By KET (Boise, Idaho, USA)
They hook on the Avenir rack I bought perfectly. They will be easy to get off and put back on, something I will do as I commute to work. Adjusting the straps the first time was a chore, but they now hook on the inner side facing the bike to the rack at the bottom, and maybe the inside strap for them should be an inch or two higher. Some outside pockets do not appear to have a way to make sure they stay closed. I might use them for plastic bottles only. Carrying the bags from the bike into the office and back each day leaves me fearful anything in those pockets could easily fall out.

I would need something bigger if I was really touring, but for commuting they are perfect. For people who have trouble mounting them far enough away from the pedals, your rack and bike must be too small. I have a 12 1/2 shoe and put the pannier bags as far back as my Avenir rack allows, on a Schwinn Cruiser and have no problem. In fact, I wish the bags were wider at the bottom.

My plan is to put my work clothes on one side and my daytimer, glasses, and office supplies on the other side. The outer pockets hold my tire pump, tools, and other bike supplies. For each bag there are two support brackets on each side to help carry the weight and one spring clip in the center to keep it on the rack. These three support items are far sturdier than what I have seen on side baskets. This allows me to get them off and on quickly. The two bags are connectable via a velcro handle. I am smart enough to lift by both handles and not trust just the velcro side to support lifting the second bag.

This beats lugging all that stuff in a backpack that had my back wet by the time I got to work!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just what I needed, May 10, 2009
By run4jc (Vienna, VA USA)
I replaced a pair of Transit panniers with these - the Transit bags were roomy and waterproof, but the hanging hooks broke on one of them just a month after I got them! The Avenir panniers are light, easy to take on and off the bike (even have a handle) and feel very secure. Hardware looks strong. I stuff a computer briefcase down into one of them - it's heavy and it barely fits, but it does fit and it stays put. I use the other side for a thermos, various clothing items, etc. These are terrific and they are a great deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Panniers, Great Customer Service, December 7, 2009
By Chuck Becker (San Francisco, CA)
I picked up a pair of the Excursion panniers and have used them for about 6 moths commuting 5 days a week. I ended up with a hole in one of them, so I contacted them to see what their waranty policy was. Anyways, they sent out a new set no questions asked.

As far as the panniers go, for commuting, they are great. Here's a brief rundown of what I've found:

* Love the multiple pockets, especially all on the outside, I am able to put my sunglasses in a case in one of the front pockets with Velcro, I keep my BART receipts in another, bungee cords in another, and a pair of clear glasses in the other. The side pockets are fantastic too, one side has my tool kit and spare tube, while the other side holds my lock. Plenty of compartments, that allow me to look in the right place for what I am looking for
* The internal pockets are huge, and have plenty of space for my clothes, computer, and shoes
* The closure system works great as well, with the cord closure, and buckles, it is always a sure thing that nothing will be flying out as I ride down the road
* The two straps on each top flap are great for odd loads, I have used them to strap building plans trough diagonally and they were totally secure
* The lock clips at the top of the bag are secure, and I have only had them pop off when I wasn't paying attention when I put the panniers on the bike and it wasn't 'locked' all the way
* LOVE the Velcro carrying handle that allows me to carry both of the pannier as one
* Haven't tested the waterproofness, but I'm hoping they are fairly resistant

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Lightweight and roomy, December 28, 2008
By Albert R. Eurs
These bags are excellent! Much better than the the originals that came with my Trek. They are larger and much more stable. Will not come loose when riding over gutters or ruts as my old ones did. The price can't be beat either. Great buy. Will purchase more when my wife's pair wears out.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good value, July 9, 2011
By Kris L. Calvin (Sisters, OR)
Bags are a bargain. Material is light but reasonably tough--so far. Hook and clip attachment is something I have not seen before, and works great to keep bags attached over bumpy roads on mountain bike. At first I too was frustrated by lack of foot clearance--my former bags had a clipped corner to solve this problem. However, the lower hook can be moved forward on the band restrainer which serves to move the bags back on the pannier rack--and gives enough clearance for my feet anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Value, January 3, 2011
By MikeJudyetc
I looked at a number of packs at my local bike shop as well as online and these seemed to offer the best value for the features; I have not been disappointed. I used to use the bags to commute to work several days a week (25 mile round trip) and they easily carried my breakfast/lunch, work items and gym clothes (unfortunately I moved to a new area that is much less bike-friendly and am currently not biking to work). They are very light weight but appear to be strong and well made. I particularly like the clip feature on the bag that attaches to the bike rack. Between the sturdy clips and the bungee hooks, I never worry about the bags popping off the bike when I hit a bump. They can be attached to each other for ease of carrying off the bike and they expand to hold a lot of cargo. There are also a variety of small side pockets that are very convenient for holding smaller items. You do need to take precautions in wet weather as the bag allows water to penetrate, but I simply enclose all my cargo in a plastic garbage bag inside each pannier and my things are adequately protected. Great product overall, esp for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Value, November 17, 2011
By Missy Munchkin
These panniers are great for daily commuting. I easily fit my 17" Dell laptop, a rain jacket, gloves, hat, cellphone, wallet, and two large text books comfortably in ONE. In the other I usually have two medium-sized tupper-ware containers for breakfast/lunch and have plenty of room for other items. I was initially surprised by how small they looked when I opened the box and was worried about fitting my laptop in there, but they're deceptively larger than they appear.

The plastic clips work well and there is a water-resistant top that folds out of the way for when it's dry. There are two side pockets on each bag and each pocket perfectly holds my smartphone and wallet. These pockets are secured by a velcro flap which firmly secures the contents in the side pockets (enough for me to trust my wallet and cell phone being in there).

Putting the bags on/off the rack is literally a snap. I ride a small mountain bike and have no problems with clipping on either side with the bags just rear of center on the rack. I take one bag inside each night to keep my extra clothes warm and leave the other on the bike. The handle that allows you to grab both bags with one hand does come in handy, but it would've been nice to make the handles a little longer since I can't clip the bags to my bike with them connected together.

Other than that, I'm really surprised by how well these bags were engineered and how every detail appears to be accounted for. For example, there's a place to attach a light on both sides of each bag. This means that you can put either bag on either side and not have to worry about where to clip your light. The handle isn't attached to the top flap of each bag so you can use the handle to lift the bag without worrying about the contents spilling out if the lid isn't fastened. There's a set of loop hooks on the lid of each bag which I thought were sill at first but make it easy to attach a muddy pair of shoes or any type of object you wouldn't want to put IN the bag.

For the money, which is less than half what I was prepared to spend on other similar panniers, I think these bags are excellent and would definitely recommend them to my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  what I fit inside, January 22, 2012
By greglettuce
I purchased these bags for my grocery store runs. On first go this is what I fit in them without any arranging. I simply threw everything inside. Box of cookies, half gallon of almond milk, 2 2 pound bags of frozen veggies, 40 count tea bag box, 2 boxes of veggie pats, 2 16 oz spaghetti boxes, 1 cucumber, 1 bell pepper, 2 5 oz bottles of Tabasco sauce, 1 32 oz bag of baby carrots, 2 hass avocados, 2 medium apples, 1 large onion, 20 oz bottle of ketchup, and a 16 oz jar of peanut butter. I only used the main compartment bags for all this stuff. The other 6 side bags could probably hold a can of beans each.
Side note. I have these on a 18.5 inch Jamis commuter frame attached to Topeak rack. Pedaling was a breeze.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  They're good, April 3, 2010
By Kathleen Boharic (Riverside, IL United States)
They're good, but I agree with another reviewer on here who said they will hit your heel. I have mine set back as far as possible on my rear rack and sometimes I'll still feel one of the side pockets against my heel. It's very annoying, and I don't have that large of feet. I'm a mens 11.5 shoe size (my name is not Kathleen, I'm here son) and my bike is a 58cm touring bike (long frame). So I was surprised when the bags hit my heel, but if I don't pack the side pockets that face the front of the bike then my heel won't rub, problem solved, however I lose some storage room.

The attachment system is good, but sometimes I feel like the hooks aren't supporting the weight evenly. There are three hooks on the bag that hang on the bike rack. The center hook has a clip, while the other two hooks do not. The center clip for whatever reason seems to be a little higher than the hooks on each side, thus, the weight is mostly on the center clip (which is made of plastic). The system has not failed, and seems to be secure, but I'll definitely be modifying the hooks a little bit. There's also a bungie-like cord that is attached to the top corners that hooks to the bottom of your bike rack.

Note: For the tour I'm planning I will definitely be adding various clips and ties to put my mind at ease. This will be easy because of there are loops near the bottom on the bag for straps, and hooks at the top of the bag. These bags also appear to be water proof, but they are not. Go buy some large plastic garbage bags if it starts to rain, problem resolved.

Overall I think these bags will work pretty well. They fit a good amount of equipment, and I'm never worried about something falling out while riding.

These are great bags. I had a pair and they were stolen, and that is because they are fantastic.... Large size and have a cinge lock. I go to the grocery store and they hold all of my purchases. They are waterproof and keep things dry.

I would recommend them to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Avenir Excursion Panniers - Great Value For Money!, November 5, 2011
By Ian B. Cooper (Silver Spring, MD, USA)
I bought a full set of these panniers (large panniers, small panniers, handlebar bag, rear rack top bag) in 2010 and use them for occasional grocery shopping and long distance touring. I have packed them full of gear to a point that would have tested the seams, zippers and straps of even expensive bags, yet these bags have taken the punishment very well indeed. So far the bags have shown no wear at all and still look and work the same as they did when I first put them on the bike.

I notice other reviewers mention the lack of heel clearance. This can be fixed by repositioning the bottom clip farther forward on the rear panniers and mounting the bags an inch or so farther back on the rack. I have big feet and since I repositioned the clip I have no problems. I use the Avenir Universal XL Rear Rack, which is very sturdy and works well with the attachment system.

With the amazingly low price (you get both rear panniers for what other inexpensive pannier manufacturers charge for a single bag), even if they do fall apart in a few years, I'll be able to buy a brand new set to replace them and still not have spent the money I might have spent on an expensive set of bags that might not have lasted any longer than these.

The only problem I've found with this set is with the rear rack top bag, whose mounting system is really cumbersome. It's still a good bag, and it can be made to work well with a little sewing skill to reposition the velcro straps.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Must for the Bike Commuter, October 5, 2011
By I Love My Life
My bike commute consists of over 26 miles roundtrip up and down a mountain. I have used a backpack bungee corded to a rear rack for the last 3 years, but it limits what you can take with you and presses the boundaries of wrinkle free dress shirts and pants! My criteria for purchasing a set of panniers included size, weather resistance, durability, hardware construction, and ultimately price. These panniers delivered as promised on all aspects and are holding up well to the demands of the mountain climb and the corresonding rapid descent. The hardest part is figuring out what not to bring and sorting what goes in each pannier. I set the panniers up so that my work items go in one pannier that I can take with me and the other is used for the bike tools, lock, tubes, etc. that can stay with the bike. Now I do not have to take extra outfits to work and store them.

When purchasing a rack for these panniers, make sure that you take them with you to the bike store to make sure that the center locking clip will fit through the gap on the top part of the rack. Several of the racks that I tried had too narrow of a gap and therefore the clip would not clamp down on the rack. I ended up purchasing an Eleven81 RACK1011 at a local bike shop and it completed an ideal setup. I also place the panniers on the rear half of the rack, which allows for more than adequate foot clearance for my 11.5 sized shoes.

This product is worth the investment for the bike commuter or tourer.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for the price, with two caveats, September 26, 2011
By Jon Becker
I love these saddle bags and they work great for my short tours as well as my commute. I would suggest however that you but a good rack (avenir has a good one for these), that allows their center to be behind the rear cassette otherwise you will kick these bags around and knock things out of the side pockets which only have velcro to keep things in. Second, you may want to replace the two metal clips on the top. The plastic gator clip on the top is awesomely bomber, but the metal clips are a little flimsy for longer rides with heavier payloads.

But as for the price, they are awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for commuting!, September 14, 2011
By David
I use these for commuting to work. I am able to pack a lot of stuff in them (books, clothes, etc). After clocking close to 80 mile with these bags so far,I have not had any major problems with them. One thing... the plastic coverings that cover the hooks slipped off. Other than that, these have been great! They are also very visible in the dark with the reflective lining.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Finally a good set of panniers, July 25, 2011
By S. Leonard (Washington, DC)
I commute daily from Brooklyn to midtown Manhattan. Went through two other panniers, a cheaper $35 model that ripped within a year, and a stylish one that was stolen. These Avenirs are by far my favorite. Even though they are labeled as "Large" they definitely do not get in the way or feel cumbersome. I would describe them as being Medium-Large- you're not going to store 4 beach towels here.

As for storage, the main pocket has plastic snap locks & drawstrings (this helps it to be water resistant), zippers for the medium-sized front pocket, and velcro for the smaller side pockets.

Smart & easy spring latch design to quickly secure and remove these bags to & from your rack. The bags are sturdy with a hard back, yet are still fairly lightweight. The reflective strips are a nice added touch too. Simply a great mix of features for commuters that are in a rush.

I haven't had the issue of my feet hitting these like a couple of others have mentioned. My rack is fairly long and I attach these towards the back of it. In fact I occasionally give the panniers a little nudge or kick to make sure they're still in place during my commute. Haven't fallen off yet. :]

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Exceeded my expectations, July 16, 2011
By Shirley (Vienna, VA USA)
My son and I just completed a 3 day,184.5 mile bike trip along the C&O Canal, from Cumberland, Maryland to Washington,DC (plus extra miles) camping along the way. I had no experience with packing for that kind of trip, so I read the reviews and took a chance on these panniers. They worked great! I was able to fit everything I needed, with room to spare, without using my usual bag that fits on top of the rack, so my rolled sleeping mat could be strapped in that space. The panniers attached easily and securely, never needed to be readjusted, and my heels did not bump into the packed bags.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Ripped after two weeks of use, July 6, 2011
By E. Wiegand
Roomy, well-designed panniers for a ridiculously cheap price. I loved these when I first got them; didn't have any of the heel-hitting-the-bag problems other reviewers complained about, they were relatively easy to get on and off my rack, and they worked great for large grocery runs. The fabric seemed pretty flimsy, but for the price it was about what I expected.

After two weeks of using them, I started realizing that the hooks on either side of the main clip securing the bag to the frame were actually not doing much at all, and while in no danger of falling off the bike, the bag was sometimes slightly swaying toward the wheel and rubbing against the spokes. On my last ride with these panniers, some of the loose fabric (or perhaps one of the straps on the bag) finally caught in the wheel, and one of the side pockets tore open, dumping its contents all over the road. The front pocket had torn open as well.

This is my first set of panniers, so it's possible there's something I'm missing - has anyone else had this problem with panniers before? Is the problem that the hooks don't stay put on the rack, or is it in the design of the bag itself? Could it be that the *rack* is at fault? Whatever the problem, I'm very disappointed that the fabric ripped so easily and so quickly. I'm going to save my money to buy some better quality panniers instead...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for trips, May 27, 2011
By Chris
I took these bad boys on the C&O Canal for a three day 181 mile bike trip. They were packed full with gear and food, and where easy to get on/off the bike. The small pockets on the front/back were perfect for small tools, or keeping a spare inner tube. The tops were easy to secure, and adjustable to keep my load in place.

During the ride, I didn't experience any rain, so I can't say how weather proof they are, but they kept the dirt and mud from the trail out, and that's all that mattered to me.

I also had a trailer with me, since you can't fit everything into these bags.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good value., November 21, 2010

I have been using these panniers nearly everyday, and I am very happy with them. They are the perfect size for everyday use.

I line them with a plastic bag because they are not water proof. They have a nice clip that holds them securely to the rack.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Attractive and useful panniers for commuting or light touring, November 9, 2010
By CPTJOHNC
I bought these as a daily (fair weather) commuter to carry my stuff to and from the office, about 12 miles each way. They are doing the job quite well. These are my first ever panniers, so I have no basis for comparison.

Mounting: Spacious, easy to use, mount easily to my Topeak Super Tourist rack. The hooks and quick release seem solid, and I've had no issues with the panniers coming loose, even over my rough terrain section (rocky towpath). The top hooks engage pretty well, though I'd be a bit nervous without the solid mount the quick release provides. The bottom hook does its job admirably, though they tangle easily when I put the two panniers together to walk to my office. That said, they are easy to carry off the bike for short distances, and the handles connect by way of a velcro close strap, to give you, in effect, one handle.

Appearance and function: They seem well made, of decent thickness cordura type fabric, though they feel a bit thin when compared to my back pack or cordura luggage. There is plenty of reflective material, and they do a nice job of adding to my nighttime conspicuity. The outer pockets are nice for organizing small stuff, though I am not 100% confident of the durability of the large pocket zippers. The small pockets close with velcro.

The main pockets are large, close by a draw string around the top, with a flap and straps over that. The draw string closure makes getting larger items (my oversize lunch container) a bit of a chore, but it does add to the feeling of security, and offers a bit of weather protection, I think. The flaps and straps do a nice job of keeping everything tidy, and the double layer top should provide decent water resistance for light rain, though I've not yet had occasion to test that theory. I wish there was a little more adjustment in the straps for when I'm riding with a pannier empty or nearly empty, as there's no way to tighten things down beyond about half full or so. OTOH, they handle large loads quite nicely. There are some straps on the tops of the flaps, to attach additional items. I've not used these, but I wouldn't think they could take too much weight.

Summary: These seem quite decent, and are quite reasonably priced. As a first set of panniers for a commuter or occasional tourer, I think they do the job quite well. If I were a serious tourer or a commuter without foul weather options, I would probably spring for more expensive, truly waterproof luggage. But based on the feel of the material, and the basic construction, I think these will handle light showers without too much water intrusion. I'll update my review if this turns out not to be the case.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  affordable mid-range panniers, February 7, 2012
By Astapura
Load;
I needed an affordable pannier that can carry quite a load. In one pannier I can load my army combat uniform, boots and towel. I can leave the other one for my bike spares and books. It can easily fit a laptop if i wanted to. The panniers can be carried off together by the top handles which can be joined by a velcro strap. I can carry groceries easily too on these panniers. These panniers looked small but can load up a lot. I like the fact that they remain small when empty.

Hooking Up;
The panniers have two hooks and a central spring hook that locks onto my Delta universal rack. At the bottom, another hook attached to an elastic band keeps the bottom close to your rack. I am not sure though exactly how long the hooks can withstand under very heavy load.

Waterproof;
It's not waterproof but it should be able to keep your things dry from light rain and occasional puddles. There is a drawstring cover under the top flap to protect your items for a while. I wished that they had attached raincovers that I can pull out and cover the entire pannier to make up for the thin non-waterproof material. I also wished the material was thicker.

Pockets;
I like the 3 external pockets. They make it easy to store my wallet, phone etc. The reflectors on the side are bright.

Size;
If you have the space on your bike, just spend on this large sized panniers. It's about the size of a small backpack. I ride a 26" commuting bike and it doesn't hit my heels. My favourite setup is with my Bellelli detachable child seat. The panniers fit nicely just behind the seat. I get to ride with my child and carry our stuff. It looks cool and rugged. I suggest you spend on bigger and longer rack setups (for any panniers).

Verdict:
If I do tour, I would get a more robust set and maybe use this in front. For commuting, this is perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Big, January 28, 2012

These are much bigger than the ones they replaced. I lost one due to my own fault; I rode with it loose, but I bought another pair because,
1. They're big.
2. They're cheap.
3. They're reflective
4. They have useful side pockets

Drawback:
I don't know how long they'll last. I had visible fading after leaving them outside three days per week for six months.

I got these mounted on my Pugsly and they're great for shopping, treking or (If youre like me and you bike to work during winter) carrying extra winter gear.
Sturdy ,roomy and secure. A good investment for your bike.
