Solid Bike Rack, October 13, 2009
By lan

An all-around good, sturdy bike rack. It's slightly less expensive than the other bike racks on amazon. The product comes with all the installation materials. As for the tools, only a screwdriver is necessary, but a wrench will makes things much easier. You won't need any specialized bicycle tools for this. It took me about 15 minutes to install the entire thing and it fits perfectly on my average-sized road bike. I can lift the entire bike(~25 lbs) by the rack without a hitch. I've yet to come across any problems. My one complaint is that the product does not come with any extra screws, which are easy to lose, so you'll have to be careful not to misplace any of them. Also, you can mount a reflector(not included) on the rear of the rack.
Note: Your bike should have small holes in the rear of the frame specifically for mounting racks or else installing it may be a pain. I think most frames have these holes, but you should check to be safe.

Merely an Okay Rack. Nothing Spectacular., May 16, 2010
By Books are Nicer Than Peopl.. (Spokane, WA)

Unlike a previous reviewer, mine did come with extra screws.
It's not a heavy duty rack by any means. For getting my bag to and from the office, it will suffice, but my work bag is not that heavy. If you're wanting a rack that will carry a lot of stuff (I.e., riding the trails all day or camping, etc.), this is not the rack for you.

Good inexpensive, light rack, May 23, 2010
By Kyle

This rack is very light which I prefer since I commute on buses and I have to lift the bike on and off the bike racks a lot. As the listing indicates, it's designed for bikes with a 700c wheel size. It was easy to install with the well written instructions, as the other reviewer mentioned, check that your bike has pre-drilled holes in the rear dropouts (where the rear wheel attaches). The instructions recommend not installing this rack if you don't have these holes, I expect most bikes do. My Schwinn Avenue had threads cut in these holes which fit the supplied screws. To attach the upper part of the rack, there is hardware provided not shown here consisting of two long metal straps to attach to the bike seat stays (the two small frame tubes that connect from the seat tube down to the rear dropouts). My bike didn't have eyelets on the stays but the kit includes clamps to slip over the stays (although they seemed too small of a diameter to fit easily over my stays). My stays also connect to the seat tube fairly low so I would have had to bend the straps considerably down to attach them. I instead opted to remove the pinch bolt that adjusts the seat height and thread it through the straps and this appeared to fit perfectly.

Cheap - may require trip to hardware store, September 30, 2010
By Joey C (Los Angeles, CA)

The hardware I received was defective. i decided to return it. Your hardware might be fine, but if not, you can go to Home Depot and get some new nuts.
The rack itself is pretty standard for this price range. It will do the job. If you are mounting to the seat stays and don't have eyelets up there, you will need to use the seat stay clamps or p clamps included. In my situation, the p clamps were way to small. I ended up just scratching my bike with them. If your stays are 7/8" you need to get a cheap set of bigger seat stay clamps from either Delta or a hardware store.
They really should include more compatibility specs in these bike ads to avoid the fuss, return shipping, and heartache. - I've just ordered the Delta Ultra Rear Rack with the day bag combo. i also got a set of p clamps that will fit. We'll see how it goes.
If you've purchased the GMC Denali from amazon...you will know what I mean.

Nice Rack, September 2, 2010

I'm really happy with this rack. It's strong and sturdy and looks good on my Sun cruiser. I've attached rear collapsible baskets(available at Amazon) and a Swagman pod (available at Amazon). It's strong enough to carry anything I will load on it. Great price for this rack, I highly recommend it.

ok not great, August 17, 2010

installed quickly and fits but i'm wishing i had bought a stronger one - it is kind of flimsy
instructions were simple and complete - but no reflector was included as indicated - no biggy
also it doesn't fit my paniers perfectly but that's my fault for not buying in a store where i could check
all in all i'm not unhappy enough to return it and not happy enough to give it more than 3 stars

700c bike rack, September 27, 2011
By jsf14

this is a flimsy bike rack and it is poorly made. One of the brackets was welded on crooked and I i had to bend the rack quite a bit in order to get it parallel with the wheel. This rack sits a little high and the bend at the end is also high, this creates a clearance problem if you have a bike with a small frame size(anything smaller than 46cm). if you can spend $5.00 more buy the Avenir XL bike rack(it is not a XL size, it is as wide and as long as this rack), it is very well made, much more sturdy, holds 55Ibs, and sits lower.

Perfect for commuting, September 24, 2011
By Kristine

My husband and I bought an Avenir Rear Road Back Rack each for our commuter hybrids. I'm not much of a bike mechanic, but I easily installed the rack on my bike with no fuss. Just make sure your bike actually has the eyelet inserts on the fork first. I use an avenir pannier on it and everything works swimmingly. Sometimes my heels will hit the bag but that's just a simple adjustment of your foot placement on the pedal. Although I have personally had no problems with this, my husband's pannier sometimes slips off the hook on the bottom. I suspect it's because he's an idiot and can't adjust his feet to avoid kicking his pannier off the rack hook.
Great product, I'd totally recommend it as a cheaper alternative to the Topeak for the same function.

Avenir bike rack, September 18, 2011
By Kevin (Alameda, CA United States)

Very happy with this rack. Considered spending a little more on a heavier duty rack, but glad I didn't. I've been using it for 2-3 months with no problems. Plenty strong for my needs. I'm using a single saddle bag, moderately loaded. I think the rack would have no problems with 2 saddle bags. Installation was easy and all necessary hardware was included.

Nice rack, September 8, 2011
By A. Savage

I'm pretty happy with the rack so far. Seems sturdy enough. Assembly wasn't too bad either. I am not the most mechanically savvy, but didn't have much of a problem attaching this rack to my old Schwinn road bike. If you don't have the upper screw holes on the frame of your bike (like me), the rack comes with two nylon covered metal loops that you wrap around the frame (don't know the technical terms for these bike parts) and then screw on to the two metal rods that support the front end of the rack (rods and screws included with frame). I needed to remove the reflector from the back of my bike to make room for the rack, but simply attached the same reflector to the back of the rack with a metal piece also included.

Great rack for the price, August 26, 2011
By J. A. Kelly (Wilmington, DE, US)

This rack is great. It fits my wife's Raleigh Venture 3.0 (which is technically a comfort hybrid - wider tires but really resembles a mountain bike in setup) perfectly! It took me about 15 minutes to install. It didn't come with instructions, but if you have any mechanical inclination you really should be able to figure it out. It bolts to the bike in four places using the included hardware. Seems very sturdy and well made. Haven't taken it out yet but I'm now thinking of getting one for myself. It's glossy black if that makes a difference. Again Quality product- One thing to also not, the lip that comes (almost under the seat) may block reflectors and/or lights, but we just relocated the rear light. Anyway, get the product, I think it will fit most mountain bikes but not sure if it will fit wheels with disc brakes. Otherwise - go for it! Great product. I'd have given it five stars but the lack of instructions was a little surprising! You may have to SLIGHTLY bend the metal brackets that connect the rack to the upper rear fork (not the area that connects to the axle area). Again for the price just get it!

Excellent Bike Rack - Lightweight, sturdy and well made, August 23, 2011

Great rack, lightweight aluminum frame and plenty of brackets, clamps, nuts and bolts so that it should fit most bikes. It would work on my ancient 10 speed road bike and it easily fit my old mountain bike. Has holes to remount your rear reflector too. Well designed, well made... WELL DONE!

all I need, August 8, 2011
By R. Melamed
|

I have one of these on my bike at home and I bought another to use on vacation. It does everything I need a rack to do and I like it's simple design and functionality. It was over $10 dollars less than the least expensive rack I could find at REI. Lite and strong enough for me. I would definitely recommend it for casual riders who don't want to wear a backpack during trips to the store or library.

Adequate, August 4, 2011
By JBG (Earth)

I decided to get a low cost rack and this was about the cheapest one I could find. I've used it a few years now and don't have much problems with it.
Pros:
1) Low cost.
2) Quite easy to install, my bike has pre-drilled holes in several positions so this fit quite easily.
3) Light weight.
Cons:
1) The end of the rack where the bottom struts attach to the rack is loose and rattles, but only if I hit bumps. Not a big deal but I'm going to see if I can insert a piece of plastic to tighten it up.
2) Not very sturdy, but that's because it's a light weight rack. I've held up to 10lbs on it without any problem. Not sure if I'll want to carry more than that on the back so it's quite adequate. Just don't expect to carry anyone on it!
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with it - it was cheap and light and does the job I wanted it to. I've had it for 3-4 years now and it's handled it's share of bumps and bruises quite well. I'd recommend it if all you want is a low cost light weight rack.

Simple and usefull, July 22, 2011
By cole

there aren't too many things to mess up when manufacturing a bike rack. It's a fairly simple piece of equipment, and I haven't be disappointed with this rack. it fits on my 27" tires, and I was able to strap a lot to it, at least 40lbs, and it stayed strong. granted my bike was a little wobbly, only because i don't have any side baskets yet so the load was a little too high, but I managed.
So I don't know why you would pay more for a rack...unless you need to haul tons of equipment...this one i think will suit most everyone's needs

good rack for road bike, July 5, 2011
By dng

I have a 2011 kilo tt pro and I installed it easily. My bike has the necessary holes to install the rack: one on each side by the cog area, and one on each side of the rear fork near the seat post (sorry dont know the technical names of those areas) It came with all the nuts and bots needed to install. It comes with metal L piece that i think is for reflector or light, but it would need to be able to screw on.
Currently I use it with my timbuk2 shift paniner and I am able to hook it on and bungie it tight, and it barely moves at all.

This Bike rack is sturdy, and all around great looking. I went to a local bike shop and they wanted $75.00 for a similar rack. After looking on amazon I found a few, but this was one of the cheapest so I figured I would give it a try. I installed it in 5 minutes and it is just great. Buy it!

Great item - Lousy customer service, June 24, 2011
By K. Pachals daughter

Bought one of these and loved it; then my wife wanted one. Bought it from Amazon Marketplace (AM) and it arrived on-time. Put it on the bike per instructions until the last instruction which said to put on the rear reflector (missing). Took me half an hour to find a number to call as Google could not find the seller. Finally found a number to call at AM and they wanted me to disassemble the rack and return it so they could send another one. They wouldn't send just the reflector. Finally they agreed to send a complete new rack from which I would take the reflector and return the rest.
Sounds goofy, but okay except the new rack was also missing the rear reflector (packaging looked like it had been a return from someone else. I give up; I will try to find a reflector somewhere else to avoid the hassles with AM customer service which by the way hides their contact number to force you through the return process first.

Frustrating to install!!!!, June 16, 2011
By all around consumer (New York, New York)
|
|
I just finished the 1st part of the install. Now, I need to go to the hardware store to buy new nuts for the included bolts as the nuts they provide do not allow the bolt to screw fully as the bolt has a locking mechanism that makes NO sense. So, currently I have the rack installed very loosely. What a pain!!! If the nuts were normal nuts I would have had this thing installed securely in 10 minutes.
Then, the install instructions indicate a reflector. In fact, there is an extra nut and bolt and other hardware to install a reflector. However, Avenir could not be bothered to include a 25 cent reflector to go with the additional hardware they included. I would have paid an extra dollar to have everything I needed in one place rather than have to deal with going to a store to shop for and to buy a reflector. Great way to think about the customer.
The rack looks nice and once I get the proper nuts/bolts and re-install the rack a few hours will have passed and I will be in business with a functioning bike rack. Wonderful, I am so pleased. Life is full of extra trouble so might as well get used to it.

Bike accessories can range from easy to hard to so frustrating you want to scream when it comes to installation. This accessory was very easy to install. I haven't hauled anything more than a lawn chair with it yet, but it installed in no time. I didn't even need the included instructions, it was that simple. It feels sturdy and makes no noise when riding around even with nothing on it to weigh it down. There's even a spot on the back to mount your reflector since the area under the seat will most likely be covered up by a bag of some sort.

Great, But No Instructions, October 6, 2011

This has been a great addition to my Trek 3500, but it comes with the rack and an assortment of nuts and bolts. But it does not come with any instructions. Let's be honest, though, unless you're an idiot you shouldn't need instructions. It's honestly very self explanatory and can really only be attached one direction. Works great for my commute.

Great, lightweight rack!, March 11, 2012
By Ccota08 (CO, USA)

I've only been using this rack for about a week, but I love it.
First of all, the installation is quite simple. It came with instructions, though once I got going, I really didn't even need them. All of the required screws and hardware are included. The only thing you'll need is a screwdriver and a wrench. The support struts that attach the rack to the bike frame just underneath the seat post are nice and sturdy, but flexible enough that I think they would fit on just about any bike. Mine required a bit of bending for the struts to attach where the holes for the screws were, but the whole thing still feels nice and sturdy.
I have yet to haul anything more than my school bags with it, but it's served that purpose quite well and feels nice and secure.

Economical rack for braze-on bosses, March 3, 2012
By Gyozadude (Sunnyvale, CA USA)
|
|
I bought two of these racks and have used them for over a year. One for commute, the other for recreational rides. If you have brazed-on eyelets that use standard M5 threaded screws, then this thing installs pretty quickly. Just mount the extension bars on the top loosely, then attach the rack, first securing the lower legs near the rear dropouts to braze-ons, and then near the rear brake on those braze-on eyelets. Less than 10 minutes for each bike. And it looks pretty good too. Plus it considerably reduces road spray on the back when it rains.
So far, the rack has held up just fine. The welding provides the optical illusion that the rack is somehow not square. And it may be slightly off. I would have dinged this rack a star, but my $50 Blackburn racks were actually a bit off and I gave them 4 stars, so this has to be a 5 star because of price-performance.
For commuting, light touring, and light shopping, this rack works great. It seems to hold quite a bit of weight, being rated for 25 lbs. Some folks might need more, but considering those folks probably need a custom-built 40+ spoke touring wheel for that kind of abuse, well, those folks can spend the money. This rack isn't for them. But it is for most folks with standard metric M5 screw thread braze ons. I haven't installed a rack like this ever using seat stay clamps. I'd rather break out the oxy-acetylene torch and silver solder and braze-on some mounts before using clamping hardware. But that's just me.

Wrong Parts., February 10, 2012
By Jeremy Werner
|
|
Two of the screws that came with this product were too short, and I had to find my own screws. Additionally, for the screws that were supposed to attach near the axle of the rear wheel, the locknuts they provided interfered with the chain, causing the pedals to lock up whenever I shifted to high gear.
Because of these design flaws, I had to drill and tap new holes into my bike frame, and I had to make the holes at the base of the bike rack bigger. Definitely don't buy this. Keep shopping.
