5.0 out of 5 stars.  Large Relief for Small Coin, September 17, 2010
By Porsche owner (Indiana)
I suffer from arthritis in both wrists, which is a problem as I enjoy cycyling and
believe it worthwhile exercise. I cycle in excess of 1000 miles a year. I found
these grips much more comfortable than the standard round grips that come on most bikes. You can spend more money and get fancier grips which allow you to vary your grip, and they are also very much worth the money, (my wife has those), but for the money, and as little as I spend leaning on my wrists, these Avenir grips are a godsend. I did have to cut them down, as they are too long to fit with my wrist shifters, and one must take care to position them right the first time, (definately use soapy water). They are soft, shaped to more closely fit the contour of the hand, provide a wider platform for the hands and are maintaining the initial positioning, at least so far.
Five stars for price; five stars for utility.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not Soft, April 8, 2011
By Ryga (Colorado)
I have some zinging nerve issues when I ride, so I keyed off the reviews and bought these. Used them for two weeks, WITH gel bike gloves. They're too hard. They have (I can see now that I've cut them off my handlebars) only a maximum 2mm softer plastic for cushioning, over firmer flexible plastic. As cushioning grips, these fail. The heel-of-hand flanges are too thick to flex, so provide no extra cushioning. My recommendation is that you try before you buy. I just returned from the store with an $8 pair of Bell "Comfort Grips." They feel much softer.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not the best, April 14, 2011
By Robert Baker (Arizona)
I don't find them ergonomic enough. I'm a 6'3" male with normal sized hands for my size and the "wing" length is too short. It's a step up from the stock round ones, but not my much. They are also not that soft, I was expecting a gel feel from the other reviews, but it's more like cork.

These also don't have a allen screw to hold them in. They expect hairspray or soap to hold them. So if you have to remove them, expect a bit of a mess. I used to have the ergon grips, and I liked those much better. These are cheaper, but not worth it if you ride your bike to work or more than 10 minutes at a time.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  The most painful grips ever., January 16, 2011
By Flaxman (NJ, USA)
These are the grips that were installed on our new Raleigh Companion tandem. I don't know what kind of cycling the other reviewers do, but we tend to go for 40-70 mile rides that tend to last most of the day. For both of us, with very different hand sizes, these grips have been extremely uncomfortable. For the first five or ten minutes they're fine, but after that the broad part of these grips becomes painful against the bottom of your hands. Keep riding and your fingers will go numb.

The only way to try to make them somewhat less uncomfortable is to try to rotate them in such a way that you're not resting on that ridiculous expansion.

Absolutely horrible.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Comfy Grips, November 30, 2010
By Big-D (Lake Havasu City, AZ United States)
I replaced my typical hard grips with these Avenir Soft Grips on my Giant mountain bike. I did not want to spend upwards of $30 or more on a set of grips and these feel great. They use end plugs which allowed the installation of a rear view mirror. These grips feel great, offer super control and support my hands and wrists much better than the stock grips.

Installed in minutes... WITH WD-40! Make sure you use a liberal amount to slide them on. I had to cut one of them to lenth for shifter room. Easy to cut with exacto knife. Perfect for the price. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Buy, June 3, 2011
By MostKnownUnknown (Virginia)
I was in the process of upgrading from twist shifters to trigger shifters, so I had to buy some new grips too. I wanted something that would offer a little support to my palms, in hopes that my wrists wouldn't take such a beating. These Avenir grips really fit the bill.

I recommend using aerosol hairspray to get these grips on easily. Spray a light coat inside the grip and slide it on. Make sure you get them positioned properly and let dry for a few hours. They will stay put for miles to come.

I find these grips really support my hands much better than a skinnier brand. The palm supports are firm on the inside, and softer on the outside resulting a comfortable, ergonomic and visually appealing handlebar grip.

Bonus - the grips are open the whole way through with separate plugs to fill the bar end. This means you can still use any handlebar ends (bullhorns) of your choosing.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good quality comfortable grips, November 25, 2010
By Aaron (USA)
I wanted grips that would not disintegrate by sitting in the sun and rain. I specifically was looking for grips that did not have this problem. I have used this grips for 2 months and have left it outside for most of the time. This is good quality grios and I am very satisfied with them.

They melt and disintegrate horribly. Not recommended. I am currently replacing a set. Buy something in a hard composite that will last.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Soft? No., September 5, 2011
By Jaun Carlos
Comfort and Positioning:
-This item is described as "soft" which is simply not true. They have about as much give as cork bar-tape, or maybe a fully inflated basketball. That being said, I am a firm believer that soft/cushy grips don't help. The real strength of this kind of grip is in the "ergonomic" shape. The purpose of the wings is to keep your wrists straight, not to provide a platform for you to lay your wrists out flat. If these grips are positioned properly, they will keep your wrists straight with your forearm, which is desirable as it reduces strain on your wrists.

Installation:
-I've read that a lot of other reviewers used hairspray or some other kind of fixative to install these on their handlebars. I recommend using a water-based, "personal" lubricant (I used astroglide). Apply a very thin layer to the handlebars and slide the grips on. The lubricant will allow the grips to slide on easily, and will become sticky when it drys. One note though, this method will still allow some movement if you apply a lot of twisting force.

Complaints:
-My hands are large, and I can easily wrap my hands entirely around these grips with decent overlap. Because of this, my palms often rest on the apex of the wings, and can become sore. I would complain about the lack of a tightening ring, but that is the kind of feature you find on much more expensive grips.

Extra Notes:
-You CAN use these with grip shifters, but I DO NOT recommend it, as they are much too long for that, and will keep your hands away from the shifters at most times (also the combination looks ridiculous).
-These fit 22mm handlebars (extremely common size for flat or riser handlebars)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good value, August 2, 2011
By homeowner (SC)
I put these on my wife's bike and she loves them. They are firm and not too squishy. It's important to get the angle right so be sure to sit on the bike and figure out how you want them to be positioned first. (Tip: use UNSCENTED hairspray for the install. It lubricates the grip so it slides on smooth and, when it dries, it keeps it in position).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome grips, December 8, 2010
By Doug (Raeford, NC)
I have tried 5 different types of grips and these are the only ones that stopped my hands from going to sleep. They also stay stable on my MTB bar, won't slide left or right or rotate; a well ergonomically designed grip.........................good job on the design.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice inexpensive grips, October 19, 2011
By Jon Y.
I got these to replace the stock grips on my Nashbar Hounder. They are pretty firm, but they have a good ergonomic shape and volume so that it fits better in my hand than what was basically a rubber-covered bar. I used hand sanitizer to slide the grips onto the bar and once it evaporated I popped in the end caps. So far they have stayed put. I don't know how these compare to really expensive high-end grips, but for the price they do what they're supposed to do and are way better than stock grips.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Grips, September 24, 2011
By Ian Holmes
Very good, stable, and wide. They're made of two types of rubber, both are "softish", and in my opinion, provide the right amount of resistance. They are firm with limited give but a nice texture. They are very flat, and the curve seen in the picture creates a platform for the bottom of your palm, giving you a much wider contact area.

Overall, I am very pleased with these grips.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for Adult Kick Scooters, July 30, 2011
By Littleviews (New York)
I bought mine for an adult kick scooter. They do an excellent job of distributing the weight I feel across my palms. Highly recommended!

That said, on a hot (i.e., 90 degrees and up) day, my hands do get sweaty (just as they did on my original grips, but now there is more surface area to contend with). Right now, I simply secure a thin washcloth over each grip with a rubber band to solve the problem. I'm thinking about buying riding gloves, but so far, the washcloth works wonders and, given how much I sweat on a hot day, I think the washcloth solution is more sanitary.

These are great and feel good on the hand. Good for long rides and short ones to. Just make sure you follow the directions. At first put on wrong, Because at time I think I'm right without reading all the material that come with it. But good for the money. Would buy again and told all my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  get a grip!, March 4, 2011
By Biken' at the Beach
I guess the title should be get two grips- these are top of the line, as far as I'm concerned. The palm swell and texture of the material make these a must for comfy cruising. They fit my new Pyramid high rise handlebars perfectly. I did soak them in very hot water for 5 minutes to loosen them up, then they slipped right now, never to be removed by human hands, anyway. See you at the beach!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great replacement. Good value., February 12, 2012
By D. Purciel
I bought these for my guest bike here at the beach. The bike originally had no grips so I decided to get the first ones I saw. Picked these ones up used from amazon. They are pretty hard plastic and create a resting point for the palm. The hand does not mold up perfectly to the shape though. But they still are comfortable and ergonomic. They will work fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Ergonomic and Soft, April 8, 2012
By Rahat
I have replaced old grips of my bike with this pair. These grips are soft, ergonomic and comfortable but the finish & outlook of this product is not A-class. I would grade it B+ mainly because the caps on outer edge of these grips came off when I was installing these grips on the handle bar.
Otherwise its a good product to buy.

Due to its soft rubber and tighter built it requires a lot of pressure to stow these grips on the handle bar, I recommend putting a few drops of lubricant on the edge of handle bar before stowing the grip.

Happy Riding!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  LOVE THE ERGO...VERY NICE GRIPS !!!!!, April 7, 2012
By bruce of SD (San Diego, CA USA)
These grips are nice looking. I will only use ergo grips. The are really nice for the palm of your hands, and they seem to help straighten your wrist, and place them in the proper & comfortable position. They were very easy to install. I mixed some dish soap and water together, and rubbed the inside of the grips & the handlebars with the mixture. They slide right on with some easy twisting.
I would not consider these SOFT grips, by any means. But I don't want a super soft grip. They are merely quality grips, with a very functional & "hands-friendly" design, and a surface that insures a no-slip ride.
