The TandemMount R4 is simply the best two-seater bike rack on the market. Take the front wheel off and mount your tandem onto the fork mount from the ground. Once the fork is clamped in, lift the rear wheel onto the tray, and voil á. You will only have to lift half the bike's weight at one time. The R4 is also telescopic and can adapt to carry a single bike and bikes with up to a 78" wheelbase.

Love it., January 28, 2011

This thing is the best. I love that you can mount a tandem or a single bike depending on the day. The other best part is that it's super easy to load a Tandem, it has this pivoting system built in so that you only have to lift 1/2 the bike at once before fully mounting it. So, I can load my tandem bike all by myself. RockyMounts Tandem R4 is the definitely a quality and easy rack to use and comes at a good price. I've been very happy with this rack and would definitely recommend it.

Strong, stable, does the job at a good price., January 10, 2011

We couldn't be more satisfied new owners of this mount. The RockyMounts Tandem Mount R4 works very well, exactly as advertised. I have not used the competing tandem mounts but it is hard to believe that they would function any better and they cost quite a bit more.
Our T4 is mounted on a Thule roof rack on a sub-compact car (making quite a sight when our Trek tandem is in place). I was able to put the bike on the mount myself, but it is definitely easier with two people, as appropriate for a tandem. The mounting seems very solid and well built. It was stable on turns and over bumps, and was fine at highways speeds (we've had it up to 65 mph). One especially useful feature is that when the tandem is not on the car, the mounting tube can be shortened and locked in a position that will not interfere with the operation of the car's trunk.
The people at Rocky Mounts were very helpful -- a part was missing, I contacted them by email, and the part arrived at our home in FL along with a nice gift three days later.
A couple of things a perspective buyer should know.
(1) You need 5" of roof rack crossbar outside of the mounting towers on your Thule of Yak roof mount. (It would be very hard to mount the bike, I think, if the rack is inside of the roof mount towers.) We were able to reposition the crossbars to get the 5"; RockyMounts also offers an extension if your crossbars are not long enough.
(2) Also, the mounting is essentially permanent (or at least seasonal) because it uses lock nuts that require tools. It might be possible to use some sort of wing nut, but I would check with Rocky Mounts first.

Two Flaws, May 7, 2012
By Paul T. (Seattle, WA)

This could be an excellent rack, but for two flaws, one of which is a show-stopper.
The pivoting tube that holds the bike fork is inexplicably welded on at an angle, perhaps to look "cool" or aerodynamic or something. (To avoid a patent infringement lawsuit has also been suggested.) The problem is that when you turn the pivoting tube 90 degrees to attach the fork of your heavy, awkward tandem bike, (while the rear wheel of the bike is still on the ground,) the axle that holds the fork is now slanted down significantly relative to the ground, perhaps at 20 degrees from horizontal. To align the bike fork with the now-downward-slanted axle is a serious pain in the backside; you have to lean the whole bike over sideways about 20 degrees. Meanwhile, the QR skewer likes to slide down inside the slanted axle tube so you really need a second person to help hold it in place, and to help manhandle the bike so the fork lands on the sloping axle. This rather defeats the "one-person loading" claim of the rack! (Trying to load the bike at a less-than-90 degree angle from the car, i.e. more parallel to the car, doesn't work either; the captain's chainring and pedals make contact with the side of the car.)
This is a really lousy design shortcoming. It takes what could have been a stellar bike rack and turns it into one of those products that makes you grind your teeth in frustration every time you use it, wishing you'd bought something else. Trying to politely bring this to the attention of the RockyMounts factory was fruitless; clearly, they don't want feedback from people who are actually using this product.
The only fix is to cut the pivoting tube assembly completely off of the long horizontal tube, (i.e. grind through the welds,) re-cut the horizontal tube at 90 degrees, shape the cut end so it fits the profile of the pivoting tube assembly, and have it re-welded. Naturally, the resulting burnt paint looks terrible, but at least the design modification works and you can finally load a tandem by yourself.
The other design flaw is that the metal axle tube (through which the QR skewer runs) does not rotate. This may not seem like a problem until you attach your bike per instructions, tighten the QR skewer (which you have to do, otherwise your bike's fork will crash onto your car roof,) lift the rear wheel up and set it into the tray. Then you'll realize that the face of the non-pivoting axle tube has just sheared all of the paint off the inside of your fork blades. Not cool, and I hate to think what this would do to a carbon fiber fork.
I really wanted to love this rack. The sliding tray is well conceived, the rack is sturdy and solid and it isn't fazed by the Pacific Northwest's constant rainfall. Sadly, the two design problems above render it far, far less functional then competing offerings from Yakima, ATOC and Draftmaster.

Tandem rack that is easy to use, August 2, 2011
By Bert

We bought this rack because it was just a sleeker design and is more functional than many tandem racks. I like that you can it it to any size bike. In a rain storm I was able to move it from being a tandem rack to being a single bike rack QUICKLY!!! I love how the mounting piece pivots. I am short and it always took my husband and I to get the tandem on the top of the car. Not anymore! It is super easy to swing the bike on to the top of the Subaru. Even without a cool tandem in the rack, it looks really nice on the car and it is a sleek design. Love my Rocky Mounts!!!! This company knows what they are doing!

Rock Mounts Tandem Mount R4, March 31, 2011

It is a solid mount and the package is extremely light in weight. The installation process is not too complicated at all. I believe the 4 contacting nuts to the roof rack can be improved providing easier entry into the rails of my Thule Aero Bars.
My other complaint is that Rocky Mounts do not currently have lock cores available for this mount which is pretty disappointing.
Other than, It's a solid tandem mount which can transport your tandem securely.

Well Designed, Well Made, February 18, 2011

The R4 Tandem Mount is a very well designed product. From the sliding inner tube that allows single bikes or tandems, to the smooth headset type front fork swivel, you can tell that a lot went into working the design into nearly a work of art. The silver anodized finish provides not only protection, but an eye-catching alternative to the black racks and accessories you see from the competition. Clearly, Rocky Mounts put a lot of thought into designing a unique tandem mount that is not only functional, but nice on the eyes. (And if you're a high-end tandem owner, looks are an important part of the package.)
The build quality is excellent. The welds are sturdy and the mount is stiff. The parts work well together you can tell that it will last for decades. The assembly is simple and there are easy to follow instructions regarding how to put the sliding oval tube into the fixed mount.
The price is what first attracted me to this product. In the end though, you want a stable and quality tandem mount. The design and quality of this mount exceeds those of the usual competitors who make rack systems. I feel I made a very good buy and I will be telling my other tandem friends where to get a mount that is exceptional.
