4.0 out of 5 stars.  A decent rack bag, March 27, 2009
By A. McDaniel
I used this to carry my stuff on my bike during a 500 mile bike trip last summer. You can fit a lot of stuff in here if you pack smartly, and the multiple pockets can hold lots of smaller stuff of various sizes.

My complaint would be the Velcro straps don't secure it to the bike rack very well and cause it to sit a bit lopsided. If you have lots of stuff you'll probably have to secure it with a bungie cord or two, because the extra weight will make it want to slide off to one side.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Has taken a weight off my shoulders, October 29, 2009
By MLipenk (MN)
When I would bike to work, I used to lug a backpack with my laptop, lunch, lock, books, gloves, and other odds and ends, but got tired of the weight (and sweat) on my shoulders and back. I needed a replacement.

For 4 times 10 bones (Dick's Sporting Goods or Amazon) this rack-top bike bag can't be beat. I've since bought another from amazon for a little over $26!!!

It has a fairly large expandable main compartment. It won't hold large binders or a laptop, but that is O.K. I needed to downsize. I don't think I would carry a laptop in a bike bag anyway unless it had a solid state drive, because of the bumps and shock it would endure. However, It works great for lunch size items and clothing, and actually smaller books could fit as well. The expandable main compartment is wonderful on camping trips for carrying bulkier towels and things to the swimming hole.

The top of the main compartment is secured with a zipper. As a nice touch there is a reflective strip around the edge of the top and another reflector with the Avenir logo on what would be the back of the bag. Additionally there are 3 outside auxiliary pockets which I could see being nice for weekend outings for those lose items like ipods, cameras, gloves, billfolds etc. Two outside pockets are closed by a zipper, one by by Velcro. There is also a plastic lined pocket to place a water bottle.

The bag also comes with a detachable shoulder strap, so the bag can become a very nice tote bag on your excursions into the towns villages along the bike path. As a nice touch the inside of the cover also has loops for anything tubular (pens, screw drivers, lipstick, etc.) and slots for things like credit cards. Although it may not be as convenient as a fanny pack, I could see this being used as a day pack for the lake or beach, even if you leave the bikes at home.

The bag attaches very securely and easily to your bike's rack with two Velcro bottom straps and one front strap (I have the basic Avenir Rear ATB rack). It is quite easy to wrap the straps around the bottom of the rack platform and simply slip the front strap over the front of the rack. At times I have a lunch, a 24oz bottle of water and a packable rain jacket in the pack, along with my lock a couple tools and a spare inner tube... and the pack doesn't budge when cornering or going over bumps. I cannot tell there is any additional weight, and my bike handles very nicely. There are two other Velcro straps up on the side, which at first I thought were intended to fasten the bag to the handle bars, but I see the picture has them being used to hold a tire pump.

This bag is great for excursions on the bike path or for the commuter. For the price paid, it has literally taken a weight off my shoulders.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great value, June 4, 2010
By J. Chitty (Dothan, AL)
This bag has been wonderful, I bought one and I am buying another for my wife's bicycle today. I use mine mostly to commute to work on my casual days, I can fit my pants, shirt and shoes (rolled up) my Kindle, my lunch, keys, wallet, cell, wet wipes and deoderant. Like I said, it's great value. You have to get creative with packing it, but it all fits!

One other thing, my wife and I have used it for short rides to our local park for picnics, because the main compartment is insulated it keeps our food cool! If you are looking for a rack top bag look no further!!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good enough., May 24, 2011
By MMS (Michigan)
This bag serves it's purpose, but could use some improvements. It's difficult to install without completely turning yourself upside-down to weave the velcro straps beneath your bike rack. Even once installed, unless it's tight up against the back of my seat, it feels loose, so then I end up partially sitting on it.
The biggest plus is that it's insulated,so adding an ice pack and some Powerades allows for extra hydration to be brought with on a long ride. The expansion ability is a plus, but I have yet to need it. One of the zippers broke on one of the smaller compartments, but I can deal with that, though I don't think it should have happened within the first month of using it.
Overall, this is worth the price, but could use a 2.0 version.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Falls off bike rack, June 24, 2011
By John Sauer
The bag is well-made and spacious, but the 2 velcro straps on its bottom run perpendicular to the length of the bag. This means that very little of the velcro strap is joined together, so the bag is barely held in place. Every time I've taken it out for a 16-mile round trip, it's fallen off my bike at least once.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  No regrets, May 8, 2009
By T. Capobianco
I bought this bag because I already had a blackburn rack on my hybrid/mountain bike and needed a bag that would allow itself to be velcro'd to the rack. This bag worked better than expected. It provided 2 velcro straps for the bottom and 1 velcro strap for the front of the bag, and provided two other "rings" (not sure what you call them) which allowed you to secure the top front of the bag to another point on your bike using a small bungie cord. (I attached it to the underside of my seat for more bag stability) Lots of pockets, durable, and held up fine in 3 hours of rain! The ability to expand via a zipper on the top half is sweet! Lots of room for any day trip.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice bag, but unstable., April 13, 2011
By SuperE
The bag quality is top-notch. It's got lots of storage space and seems well thought out. My only issue is that it's very unstable on my rack. I don't have an option of attaching the velcro to my seat post (there just simply not enough room for the bag to slide over that close) and even without riding, the bag sways and is not secure at all.

What's trick?

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome trunk bag, September 2, 2011
By Re-Du
After much research and many comparisons, I decided to purchase this bag for my bike. The quality and construction of the bag is great. There are various outside pockets to hold lots of things, including a set of velcro straps to hold a bike pump, and a lined, waterproof pocket to protect your bag from the water bottle sweat. The large interior is fully insulated and can be expanded to hold even more if necessary. The sides are molded and stiff, so it should keep its shape for a long time. The zippers are all covered to prevent rust if it ever gets rained on. There is even a clip inside to keep keys easy to find, along with credit card or ID card slots, and pen holders.

I have a Sunlite welded spring rack on my Schwinn Trailway hybrid, and this bag fits perfectly. The bag attaches to the rack by three velcro straps: two on the bottom, and one on the side (near the seat). I've read other reviews stating that the bag is not stable and moves while on the rack. I cannot see how this could happen unless the reviewer was not attaching the bag to the rack properly. The straps should be undone and taken completely out of the buckle, then passed underneath the bag and rack. After looping the straps back into the buckle, pull to tighten and then lay the velcro hook on the loop. The velcro should create a continuous bond with itself and not have anything in between the loop & hook sections. Once this is complete (less than 15 seconds for both straps) there is NO MOVEMENT whatsoever. The bag is very tight on the rack and does not wiggle at all, even when filled with heavy stuff. The front strap should also be completely undone and passed through the front of the rack or around the bike seat post, whichever is more sturdy for the bag.

A big feature of this bag is that it comes with a shoulder strap. It is very convenient to take the bag off the rack and put in on your shoulders, instead of carrying it by a handle. It also has a slim and low profile, which helps with speed and allows easy mounting/dismounting of the bike. I am very happy with my purchase and recommend this bag highly to anyone who wants a medium-sized, quality trunk bag for casual everyday use.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Looks good, good capacity for day trips, good value, September 30, 2010
By E. Carbone (United States)
This is not the top of the line in bicycle rack-top bags, but it's a good value for the money. You can buy it at Dick's Sporting Goods but I got it for about $5 less (with free shipping) from Amazon. It attaches securely to the rack with two velcro straps. It looks good and appears to be well made. The size is adequate for day trips; as shown in the photo, the top is expandable. There are also a variety of helpful side compartments. A surprise I hadn't realized when I ordered is that it is actually insulated, too. This is a mid-size rack bag. It is not one of the behemoth bags that allow you to carry your work clothes, shoes, a helmet, and a laptop. But it is also not one of those tiny bags for accessories. It's a nice mid-size bag. It has some helpful extra touches, such as a clip on the back for a "blinky" rear bike light to attach. It also has reflective markings, and comes with a shoulder strap that can be detached.

The only downside is that I like to park and take my bike bag into restaurants or stores; because it uses Velcro straps, it is a slight inconvenience to have to un-do and re-do those each time. The bags that are made to slide directly on to the racks that are made especially for them are probably a bit more convenient in this regard.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great trunk and great value., July 7, 2011
By David Seitenbach
Bag is heavy duty, spacious and priced far lower than many other bike trunk bags on the market. Room for a cold 6 pack, lunch, bike lock and extra water. Haven't tried yet but I think it will also hold enough biking clothes and a rain suit for longer trips. Very happy I bought this bag.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  nice accessory to have, December 1, 2010
By Stephen McHenry (Olney, MD USA)
I bought the package of the Avenir Excursion Rack-top Bag with the Avenir Rear Rack, which is a great combination. The rack went on easily to my Schwinn 26" comfort rider. The bag provides three outside pockets plus an outside water bottle holder pocket plus a tire pump strap-up, all in addition to the inside pocket of the bag which is as long as the rack and has a feature to allow the top to expand upward. The rack fit easily onto my bike frame: Comes with hardware to attach to the bike frame.
The bag is a functional accessory and this seems well made. Better than wearing a backpack or stuffing your pockets or worse yet, leaving all that stuff behind.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty good, August 19, 2010
By Glenn C. Martinet (new jersey)
I needed a new bike trunk type bag to replace a Jannd that was 10+yrs old and showing it. This bag has plenty of room zippers seem to be rugged enough to stand up to my frequet use. The the velcro side pockets do not stay closed and the bag is no were near as sturdy as my old bag. I'll keep it but don't see it lasting anywher near 10+yrs.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bag!, May 9, 2011
By J. Ellett (Texas)
It's a big bag and can hold 8 bottles of water in the main compartment. The insulation is OK and helps keep them cool. Easy to strap on the rack. It is a good looking bag and holds it's shape well. It seems to be constructed well and the zippers work fine. My wife thought it was a little big, but has grown to appreciate all it can hold.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Storage Space, October 10, 2011
By Photo Guy
First off, this secured amazing well to my rear rack. There was two velcro straps on the bottom and a third on the front wall. This bag has massive storage space. I am able to fit a Nikon D200 DSLR and two lenses. I use the side pockets for keys and other items. Even with the weight of the camera/lenses, I do not feel any weight shift (road riding); and the bag stays secure to the rack.

I did get stuck in some light rain once, and the protective rain liner did it's job, nothing inside the bag was wet.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Avenir Pannier Set - Great Value For Money But This Bag Needs Work, November 5, 2011
By Ian B. Cooper (Silver Spring, MD, USA)
I bought a full set of these panniers (large panniers, small panniers, handlebar bag, rear rack top bag) in 2010 and use them for occasional grocery shopping and long distance touring. I have packed them full of gear to a point that would have tested the seams, zippers and straps of even expensive bags, yet these bags have taken the punishment very well indeed. So far the bags have shown no wear at all and still look and work the same as they did when I first put them on the bike.

The only problem I've found with the set is with this rear rack top bag, whose mounting system is really cumbersome. You basically have to get underneath the bike to thread the straps through the rear rack - and it's virtually impossible if you have panniers installed. Still, it's still a good bag, and it can be made to work well with a little sewing skill to reposition the velcro straps. You basically need to remove the straps and find a way to have the strap come out of the bottom front and rear of the bag and have the buckles attached on the front and rear ends of the bag. Then you can more easily attach the bag to the front and rear of your rack without needing to be a contortionist.

With the amazingly low price for the whole set (you get a whole set of bags for what you might pay for another company's single pannier), even if they do fall apart in a few years, I'll be able to buy a brand new set to replace them and still not have spent the money I might have spent on an expensive set of bags that might not have lasted any longer than these.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  awesome!, January 11, 2012
By Coyote Dave (Phoenix, arizona, US)
Fits great on my mtn bike rack. I can carry my lunch and snacks for the day at work. I'm training for an Ironman race so being able to carry all the food I need is great! The pack keeps the food cold with only one medium size ice pack. The shoulder strap makes carring the bag easy when you don't want to leave the pack on hour bike. Buy this pack!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product - more storage than you think, December 2, 2011
By Josh
Purchased for my commuting bike. I commute to work 26 miles round trip, three times per week on average. This allows me to fit fresh shirts, socks, underwear, my lunch, and a few other small items without even using the expandable portion. If you don't have huge feet like me you can probably fit your shoes too. The picture is deceiving - it's bigger than it looks.

The entire bag is also insulated, so it works well for quick, small trips to the grocery store. You won't be able to stock up for the week, but you can fit a few items with ease.

It fits well on an average sized rack and secures well. All the pockets and straps are useful. I always keep a small pump and a spare tube in this bag.

I like this bag because it's not big and bulky like the full-on side bags you see everywhere. If you are hauling LOTS of stuff this is probably not for you, but for the average commuting or errand running person, this will work great.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice bag, but won't work with the side bags., November 29, 2011
By Gadget Lover (Winona, MN USA)
I already had the rack and side bags and I thought this would connect right on top of those as I have seen a 3 bag set on Amazon. I could not see how to attach this with the side bags in place. If you wish to combine these there may be a better choice. Otherwise, very nice - as advertised.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product!, November 4, 2011
By D. Dawson (Portland, OR USA)
I replaced a Timberlin rack-top pack that had worn out from the sun and from a lot of use. This pack seems stronger, better built, and has more features.
I love the addition of a strap at the back to attach lights. Also, the pop up top for bigger loads is great. The side pouches are nice, too.
I would not hesitate to give this product 5 stars. It attached well, too, and seems very secure even when quite full. I added a tie wrap to the eyelet nearest the seat and that provides a lot of extra stability.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  For the price range this is fantastic!, March 26, 2012
By Darryl
Couldn't afford one of the higher quality bags, so I went for this. So far it's held up just as well as any over-priced bag I've seen my buddies using. It lacks larger fold-down bags like we typically see, but it more than makes up for that in pure durability and mobility. Buy this if you just want extra space to carry around your tools, water bottles, and maybe a snack. As bonus for those of you who use U-Locks like I do, there's straps on the side that will hold it in place. This was a relief for me, because honestly those things are a pain to secure to your bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This bag is excellent, May 8, 2012
By TheBretz
I haven't had much of an opportunity to use this bag yet, but on first use it was ideal. It quickly and securely attached to my rack in under 1-minute. It has plenty of space and a very durable fabric makeup. I really like the extra pockets for storing smaller items and extra water bottle. The main compartment even expands to hold more if needed. I'm getting ready to take a few longer rides and this bag is just what I needed.

I'm very pleased with this product. It has plenty of pockets, is insulated to help keep food and beverages cold and fit's my rack perfectly. I did attach the front shoulder strap loop to the frame of my seat with heavy duty zip ties. It makes it more secure and it keeps the top upright.
