Complete package including washer, pin, and hitch., June 7, 2010
By iowaryder
|
|
This part is identical to the hitch couplings that come with the InStep trailers other than it is a gloss black instead of a more matte black finish. One thing not mentioned in the product description is that this incudes not only the coupler and pin (as pictured) but also the special "washer" that mounts behind the hitch to keep it horizontal.
Often a concern or issue with the cheaper trailers is if they will properly mount to more "high end" bikes. The garden variety mass market retailer bikes (i.e. the cheaper ones) usually have a horizontal dropout for the rear axle where the more expensive bikes will have a vertical dropout for the axle. The hitches are designed with mass market retailer bikes (horizontal dropouts) in mind.
These hitches will work on either. With vertical dropouts rather than following the directions provided, you must instead position the tab that sticks off the back of the washer so that it will rest against the bottom of the frame instead of within the dropout as they are designed.
My wife an I each have one of these hitches on our Raleigh Route 4.0 hybrids (that have a vertical dropouts) and they work just fine. The hitches are also completely compatible with "quick release" style hubs.

Don't buy this here....., September 2, 2008
By April T. Henley (Wayne, MI USA)
|
|
We have a bike trailer that uses this and it is great, easy to hook the trailer on and off. We are ordering a second for our other bike. Instep had been out of stock for a while and they have them again. I am glad I never thought to look here because it is $8.99 on the InStep website and for me in Michigan it is only $4 shipping. That's $12.99 total which is less than the price of the item only here on Amazon. Had I bought this here I would have paid almost $20 for the item plus shipping.

Not to well thought out., March 17, 2011
By TIM-O-THY (Decatur, GA)

I've used this product twice and so far so good. Note to anyone buying this, you might have to do some altering to get it to fit (depending on your bike). I have three more recent bike models. All of which are geared, with quick release and of varying frame materials. Out of the box it fit none of them. My wife's bike which is around 8 years old worked fine. Since I was the one who was going to be doing the pulling, I had to make some serious changes to make it fit my bikes. After an hour of fine bending, grinding, sanding, painting and testing. I was able to get it on any of m y bikes.
The part is made of a soft alloy and made alterations easier, but I'm not sure how it effects the overall integrity of the product. After everything's said and done, more updating and R&D should have been applied to this product, but hey for $9 you can't really expect much.

Easy and quick to install, April 16, 2009
By Derek
|
|
I bought this so we could pull our child trailer with both mine or my wive's bike. Takes only a small adjustable wrench to install. The lock pin U-clip is very firm. Best part of this setup is the child trailer will not tip over if you dump your bike.

Attachment, July 16, 2010
By Alisha
|
|
I bought this as a combo with our bike trailer. It was not nessasary. The bike trailer already come's with a coupler attachment. The way it was advertised in purchasing both made it seem that the trailer would not come with one so you had to purchase one for around $10. That was a waste of $10. Now if you plan on wanting to attach your bike trailer to mulitiple bikes then it would be worth the extra money spent.

Not a perfect fit, but works., June 12, 2010
By Jennifer L. Shick (PA United States)
|
|
The washer part has a lip that is used to fit over the frame of the bike. With both bikes we've used this on it didn't fit exactly as it should. However, the coupler still attached securely to the bike and pulled a trailer without any problems. We use this with a Schwinn doubler bike trailer/stroller. We're happy with it and it's easy to hook up the trailer.

What a time saver!, October 9, 2011
By Kevin T. Williams (North Carolina)
|
|
What a time saver!! I bought this coupler attachment to use with my InStep Double Bike Trailer. This works perfectly.
I put one on my bike, and one my wife's bike. This makes things extremely easy and efficient depending if I am taking the kids or my wife is. It is essentially a quick release for the bike trailer. I would imagine it works for any bike trailer, you just attach it to you back wheel and screw the nut back over it. What a time saver, no more switching the whole set up if my wife were to take the kids that day while I am at work.
Definitely a must if you have a bike trailer and more than one bike!

Perfect for In-Step trailer!, April 16, 2010
By IllinoisFamily
|
|
I bought the In-Step bike trailer from Wal-Mart for like $98.00...it's the cheapest one they offer and it's great. Anyway, my husband broke off the coupler and I needed a new one. This is perfect. ONLY DOWNSIDE: We also lost the hub nut that holds this piece on. This package has 3 parts, the big black part, the small black washer with the notches on it and the silver adjusting pin. You have to go buy a hub nut to attach the thing on there. They should had just included that. I bought the nut at our local bike shop for $0.50.

We have a Schwinn bike trailer and my son absolutely enjoys riding in it! So we purchased this attachment (well over a year ago) and it makes it easy to switch the bike trailer back and forth between my husband's bike and mine without having to get out the tools! It was definitely worth the $10 bucks we spent on it!

not needed unless..., August 4, 2011
By rewyn (Streamwood, IL)
|
|
When we made the initial purchase of the InStep Bike Trailer, this optional bracket was listed as needed, but the trailer came with one already. I was going to return it but then I realized that I could simply mount it on my wife's bicycle so that we could take turns if needed to attach the trailer to either bike. If we did not have another bike the need for this would have changed and as to why it is listed as needed should be cautioned, so that people with only one bike do not get confused.

Trailer Hitch, April 28, 2011

This was a great product. It was the exact same hitch that came with our InStep Take 2 trailer. It is no surprise--it is sold from InStep.
I bought this as an additional hitch for an alternate bike, and it works very well. It attaches easily.
If the original part fit your bike, this will too.

My husband and I ride together so I bought this and he installed it in one of oue bikes. One has the original one that came with a bike trailer. We use the InStep QUICK and EZ. We were riding our bikes one day with the trailer on my bike and I got tired so we were able to switch it up within seconds on the side of the road. very good investment esp if you ride with someone and they might want to pull the bike trailer.

We needed a second trailer coupler so we can have one on both my and my husband's bikes. This is exactly the same as the one that came with our trailer, installation was easy, and we're very pleased with the purchase. It *is* expensive to buy this on Amazon and if you have time to wait you can find the product much cheaper. Perfect for a multi-bike family, April 1, 2010
By M. McGuire (Olney, Maryland)
|
|
Perect product. Does just what it says. We purchased the Schwinn Joyrider. It already comes with 1 coupler attachment, but having an extra one so that my wife and I can both have one on our own bikes makes family bike rides much easier. My wife will ride until she gets tired of pulling the extra weight, and then we'll pull over for a pit stop, pop the pin out, unhook the trailer, and hook it up to my bike. It takes no more than 60sec. - seriously. We leave the coupler on our bikes at all times. We do leave the pin with the trailer instead of on the bike - that way, whichever bike is not towing the trailer won't be subjected to a ratteling pin. We just keep the extra pin in the house in case the original is ever lost.

This coupler has been incredibly hard to find at a reasonable price. For awhile ebay was the only place to get it and they were $35.
They work as they are supposed to. We bought 2 so we wouldn't have to switch back and forth. One bike has a quick release hub the other is just bolted on and both were easy to install. I had to take my rear rack off, though.

Great coupler but Amazon price is outrageous!, July 30, 2009
By moma4faith (USA)

It is wonderful to have an extra coupler so you can use the trailer with more than one bike. I can't believe the price is over $30.00 at Amazon.com. Even though many dealers are out of stock, their prices are under $10.00 and I found one in stock at another dealer for $17.00 with free shipping. This seems like price gauging to me. So, this is a great product, but buy it somewhere else!!!
Edited to add: I'm so glad the prices have come back down on Amazon. Thanks!

Needed this coupler to connect bicycle trailer to My bike. It works perfect and connects in a breeze. I recommend this item if you desire a quick easy trailer to bike connection with flexibility.

Had to order another one., January 22, 2012
By BikeManOregon
|
|
I am glad that amazon carrys this at such a low price. I had to order another because my bike that had the coupler installed on it was stolen, and I couldnt mount my kids trailer and I love to take them on bike rides to the park and other places. It works just like the coupler that came with my Instep bike trailer.

Extra for 2 bikes, December 29, 2011
By Ryan's Mommy
|
|
One came with the trailer so we bought a second so all we'd have to do is switch the trailer over if one of us got tired. So far so good. I think it's a little pricey for what it is but the conveinence was worth it. No fuss with a 2 yr old in tow was totally worth the money.

exactly what we needed, December 27, 2011
By Zack (Scranton, PA)
|
|
We got 2 bikes and one baby carrier. The trailer comes with one coupler but we needed another for the other bike. So there's the option for her to pull the baby trailer and not always leave the work up to dad. This is just right. It does what it says and works properly.

Coupler attachment-Instep & Schwinn bike trailers, December 17, 2011
By Uncle Dave
|
|
My order of four of these items was sent precisely as specified and did indeed arrive right on time. The couplers were individually packaged within the box and there were no missing parts. The box in which they arrived was clearly marked and easy to open. The printed instructions with each coupler made installation on my bikes an easy job. They worked beautifully with the trailer and soon my grandson and I were out riding together. This was my first on-line purchase with Amazon.com, an as a result of how smoothly this all went, I will not hesitate to go this way in the future.

cheaper than manufacturer, May 9, 2011
By Ray.N.
|
|
I gave this piece 5 stars because it's exactly the same part that you would get from the manufacturer only it was a few bucks cheaper. Not the mention the shipping was half the price. Bought 2 just to have a spare in case i lose another one.....like what happened in the first place.

I have never seen price swings on a product like on this one. That being said, fairly inexpensive for an attachment is a must have. Well made and attaches quickly.

Works, but design is flawed, May 18, 2010
By Tobias Beetz (Palo Alto, CA)
|
|
Do yourself a favor and check out the piece on your trailer that inserts into this coupler. Yes, you probably see quite some wear on the Al tube. It is a design flaw that can lead to the coupler chipping away on your al tube that is holding the trailer. Look at other non-Schwinn/Instep trailers and you see why they are more expensive.

Well this does just what it is suposed to do. What more can you say really. It installs easy, works great, and does the job. I just wish it was a bit cheaper. $5 is a much more reasonable price.

I knew what I wanted and this was it. This review is about the service., October 15, 2009
By B (Berkeley, CA USA)

I was in a hurry and others had a waiting period for a (only slightly) lower price. These folks got the order out quick and I got it fast. There was a slight mistake on the order and a call to customer service got it fixed and an aditional part to me even quicker. All in all I'm one happy camper. even though the mistake would make me drop their mark to an A- I'd jump at the chance to use them again for anything they have that I need.
