5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great, even on a older 6sp w/ uniglide, June 3, 2009
By Daniel Macleod (La Jolla, CA)
I bought this chain for an old mountain bike I have w/ Shimano XT, but the bike is over 20 years old, and is a 6 speed uniglide. Even though this is an HG (hyperglide) chain, it fits and works perfectly. I haven't put hundreds or thousands of miles on it yet, but it works much better than the old chain that was on the bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Cost-effective and strong chain if kept lubed, but rusts very quickly., October 7, 2010
By D. Isaacson (Wisconsin)
Overall this chain is still kicking on my moutnain bike, but it isn't a perfect fit (too wide) for modern drivetrains. It will rust quickly (within a day) if not properly lubed after wet or damp early-morning rides. Overall good for the price but a $10 upgrade will get you a much better, smoother, and lower-maintenance chain.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  can only install once, before buying more stuff, June 24, 2011
By Gabriel C. Barros (Brazil)
Chains are pretty commodity things in bikes.

They will probably last the same if they are from the top brands.

One thing i didn't know about the shimano chains is that you can't reuse the pins after you eject them once. And the chain, which cost more than any other brand, came only with one of those pins. That's just plain cheap.

The main problem with it is that if you don't have a good bike shop nearby, like myself, you will have to buy some 50-pack of those pins online.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Chain and Great Price!, September 13, 2011
By anek (los angeles, ca)
For the price its always good to have a extra set around incase it breaks. I was able to get my old chain and put in the new one in less than 10 minutes. Since its prelubed I just hopped on and started riding. My bike is stored outside in the patio of my apartment. So far there hasnt been rust on the chain but my other parts of my bike is starting to rust.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best universal chain for up to 8-speeds, July 6, 2011
By Baby Boomer
If you're a daily rider on all terrains and don't care about 9-speeds and up on the latest, most expensive bicycles, this is your best choice. It's wider and heavier than most chains, which makes it just about indestructible. Just be sure you have a good chain breaker and use a top-quality lube. It should last for many hundreds of miles with no problem at all with all shifters and cassettes. I use it on all my bikes, which are 7 and 8 speeds.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good chain, June 2, 2011
By JP
It's a good chain and was a snap to install on my mountain bike but wish I had bought it on Amazon. I paid $30 for this same chain at a sporting goods store.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike chain replacement., February 18, 2011
By Tech geek (San Jose, CA)
My Trek 1500 Aluminum bike was making grinding noises in the lowest 2 gears and after numerous adjustments to the front and rear dérailleurs I turned my attention to the chain. I measured the wear on the chain and found it had stretched close to 1/8th of an inch measured along a 1 foot length (I have ridden this bike close to 4K miles on this chain). I found the Shimano CN-HG70 6/7/8-Speed Chain on the Amazon web site and ordered it because it had the Shimano brand name and had a reasonable price. I replaced the chain on my bike and now the grinding noises have disappeared and the bike rides like new.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great!, December 3, 2010
By Meriadoc (Sunnyvale, CA)
I had an older bike, around 15 years old, which I use for a really short commute, and it was making lots of noises during pedalling, especially when standing on the pedals. The old chain was a HG-50, but this fit just fine. After installing this chain, using the Crank Brothers Multi Bicycle Tool (17-Function) (which has a chain tool), it was amazing what a difference there was. I could no longer hear the chain against the rear cassette, and there was also more responsiveness when accelerating.

I've had this on for only a few weeks now, maybe less than 15 miles worth of wear, so can't really speak to the rusting issues; it seems to still have the factory lube on it even now.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not reliable, wouldn't purchase again., September 26, 2011
By The greatness of a nation.. (Gahanna, OH United States)
I have been prompted to write this review because when I went to get on my bike this morning the chain was busted. One half of the outer casing on a link had been stretched and detached from the pin, the other side was hanging on for dear life. I removed the link and re-attached the chain. If I didn't have a chain breaker and the knowledge to work on my bike I would have had to take it into the shop, who knows how much that would've cost.

To give you an idea of how much wear is on the chain I have had this chain for about 5 months now. I don't own a car so my bike is my only form of transportation and I probably average around 10 miles a day. I ride up some steep hills regularly in my commuting but I don't ever shift under high pressure. Yes it was ridden in the rain and it has to deal with plenty of gunk. I oil and clean my chain about once a month, maybe I should do more, but I don't expect this to happen. I work on and ride bikes that have 30 year old chains and have never seen this happen before.

The chain was great when I bought it, and I did notice an increase in shifting smoothness immediately. It just isn't strong enough to put up with a lot of use.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Replacement chain, December 2, 2011
By Mike (VA)
Factory new chain. Make sure you get a breaker since it's a universal fit and needs to be cut to length before putting it on and pressing back together.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bushingless design, November 22, 2011
By Curly Bill (Mckinleyville, CA USA)
This is a well designed chain.

The description does not mention that it is a bushingless chain, which was an unexpected surprise.

If you don't know what I'm talking about.
Sheldon Brown does an in depth discussion.
[..]

I bought 2, when I put on the next one I'll order 2 more. I use a chain stretch gauge.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice smooth chain, July 3, 2011
By Malacca73 (Chapel Hill, NC United States)
No complaints, really. Seems very smooth, though of course I just put it on, so maybe it will get worse - who knows? Seems to be pretty high quality, though. I dinged it one star since it doesn't have one of those special links that doesn't require a chain breaking tool to connect, which can be a little bit of a pain to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  nice chain!, April 11, 2012
By cofffffeeeeee
This chain came in perfect condition, but you'll need a chain breaking tool if you want to put it on your bike. You only have one chance to do this (unless you buy another pin), so make sure it's the right length. The cost differential between this chain and the HG50 is minimal, and the HG70 seems to be of better quality to me.

Has held up well for over a year, still shifts smoothly and doesn't seem to have "stretched" much.
