1.0 out of 5 stars.  Chain broke it to pieces!!, September 24, 2010
By Will
This tool broke to pieces at the first use after trying to shorten a brand new HG chain.
I have successfully use chain breakers before, this tool didn't even just bent, no it actually broke into pieces as I turned the screw into the chain link pin.

It is made of very cheap material !!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Works well, but I only used it once, June 3, 2009
By Daniel Macleod (La Jolla, CA)
This tool worked well for me, I bought it to take off an old Shimano chain and add a new one. It doesn't feel extremely solid, so I'm not sure how long it will last with repeated use, but I think it's a good value if you are not changing chains frequently

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent Tool For Okay Price, August 5, 2008
By Gold Fish Lung (Brooklyn, NY)
This tool from pyramid works fine, i've used it several times already and have not had problems taking the chains off and putting them back together. Only complain though is that the black caps that keep the long cylinder piece in came off after the first use and i had to use epoxy to glue them back.

A very handy and easy to use tool for doing chain maintenance. I thought that it worked very good for shortening my recumbent bicycle chain.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  For me...not worth it, March 23, 2011
By VW (Ohio)
while it did its job, a piece broke off during my first use. It also comes with a nice label on the bottom that reads "This product contains materials known to the state of california to cause cancer".

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Gets the job done, September 25, 2010
By Kevin Ngo
I've used this tool three times so far, and it's worth the money. It's a little tough on older chains (feels like the lever is gonna snap) but that's to be expected from both an old chain and a relatively cheap tool. Overall worth the money for basic DIY bike projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Simple, affordable and does the job, September 19, 2010
By digital Pimple
Perfect tool for the job. It's not the best tool on the market but definitely not the worst. If you own a bike shop you may want to invest in something a little more substantial. Works easy, smooth and had no problems braking a few chains on a few 7 gear bikes. Something to keep in the tool box. Should last for a normal home user. This is all you need. Very happy.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Eh., February 7, 2009
By Lonewitness
Can get the same tool at a local bike shop, sometimes for cheaper without the wait of shipping. Was hoping it was better than the usual chain breakers I've used before, but it was the same in difficulty of use as any breaker.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Threads are stripped after 10 minutes of use, November 21, 2011
By Taylor K. (Brooklyn)
I bought this because the pin on my other tool (same design, different brand) deformed. In retrospect, I should have gone with another chain breaker, because after only 10 minutes of use, I could no longer turn the lever: I had somehow stripped it. So now my bike is locked up outside my school with no chain, because the tool broke before I could get the new chain on. I made sure to be careful using the tool to make sure it pushed the pin out straight, to avoid this problem and avoid bending the tool's pin. My advice is to not even consider this tool. Spend a little more money on a better tool that is truly made out of hardened metal. This was a waste of my time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Lifesaver!, January 19, 2012
By mateo231011
This is a must-have for anybody who need to adjust the length of a bike chain. It is much smaller than I expected, fits in the palm of your hand, but does a great job! Makes chain adjustments a breeze!!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Cheap tool works OK, October 2, 2011
By Burkay (IL)
Pros:

It is cheap.

It eventually works.

Cons:

The part that pushes against the pin has a lot of wiggle room. You need to make sure that it presses against the pin, not against the other parts of the chain. Otherwise you may bend or damage your chain, or break your tool as some users did.

The metal rod lever that comes with it has very loose plastic tips. They come off when you try to use it, exposing your hands to the edges of the metal rod. This makes the use painful.

The lever in question is also too short to get any good leverage. After struggling with a brand new chain for about 3 minutes, I took the lever out and replaced it with a long screwdriver. It was so much easier to break the chain then. However, make sure that the substitute is high quality steel with high tensile strength. Otherwise, it may explosively break and the flying pieces of metal may injure you. (This sometimes happens on oil platforms, where workers use similar methods to increase leverage.)

Conclusion: None of the cons are deal breakers for me. If you know what you are doing, you should not end up breaking the tool, damaging the chain or injuring yourself. However, if you don't mind spending 10$ more, I would recommend you to get a better quality chain tool for example from park tools.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Complete junk, August 26, 2011
By D. Edwards
This worked a total of two times, and now it is completely jammed. I was able to get the old chain off, and shorten the new chain to the correct size, but the threads jammed when I tried to unscrew the tool the second time. It is totally locked and useless now. I tried using vice grips to un screw it, but it's toast. Avoid this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does the job., October 23, 2009
By M. Hofmann (Milwaukee, WI)
The seller actually sent me a different brand of chain breaker, but it is very similar to the Pyramid. I'm not sure what brand it was, since I threw out the packaging already. The chain breaker works well. Its not fancy, but does the job and, for the price, I have no complaints.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good tool for price, May 20, 2012
By Jammin
Not the best chain tool out there; doesn't hold the links in place well. For the price though I would say this is a very good value. Works well and appears solid (I am an engineer and can usually spot a tool that will break in a couple months, this tool does not give me bad feelings). Just be very careful lining chain up and holding links in place and this tool works great. Would be nice if it came with instructions for new users, even simple "caution, do not push pin all the way out" but if you are not familiar with it don't let that stop you; there are plenty of good how-to videos available online.
