4.0 out of 5 stars.  It's not bad for medium to low bike crime areas, April 25, 2009
By A casual stroll through the lu.. (Prague)
Kryptonite STD U Lock seems to be a very decent lock but it still can be "infiltrated" by a knowledgeable master thief/master lock picker in probably under 1 hour time. I'm not too worried since it is sizable, hefty looking and very heavy (4 lbs), so it looks bigger than what I saw on other bikes in the bike rack and my bike is only valued at $500. Plus most bike thieves are just simple crooks with a few tools (a bike crook in public with a 20 Pound Sledge Hammer, hacksaw, 42-inch bolt cutters, 12-inch screwdriver, 20-inch crowbar, and claw hammer will be very obvious and suspicious working for one hour on a lock).

Most bike thieves have limited time, looking for an "easy" and quick target. If you beef up your security with the bulky Kryptonite STD U Lock, odds are he'll go for a bike with a cheap lock (cheap chain or cable locks are a certain way to get your bike stolen in the bike rack). Many bikes are stolen because they're not even locked ("I'll just be a sec!"). Many bikes are also stolen because the locks are used incorrectly or left open/unlocked by mistake.

Kryptonite STD U Lock. The keys are very flimsy and forged with cheap metal so I won't be surprised in 12 months that they snap or are damaged. The Lock holder (cheap plastic) didn't work on my bike as the Lock is too big to fit anywhere so I just snug it into my rear rack.

Comes with a cable (be warned, it can be cut quite easily so don't use it as a "main attachment" to a pole, bike rack, etc, just use it to secure your rear or front tires with the U Lock attached to a pole, bike rack, etc, or run the cable through both the seat and the rear tire with the U Lock fastened to a solid object).

You should use a cable lock ONLY to secure your front or rear tire to the bike frame or bike rack. ALWAYS attach the U Lock to a solid, fixed object (lamppost, pole, road sign, fence, bike rack, etc). A cable lock is NOT a primary security tool to secure your bike. Never rely on a cable to anchor your whole bike, it can take someone a few seconds to cut through a cable lock. Always use a high quality U-lock or hefty chain as your MAIN locking device and cables as secondary devices.

In spite of AT LEAST 5 known attempts by petty German bike thieves to break through the Kryptonite STD U Lock, it's held up and has been an eminent tool in my bike lock collection (my secondary cable/cheap Chain locks securing my front tire have ALWAYS been cut).

In all, it's not bad for medium to low bike crime areas but don't use it ALONE for overnight, expensive bikes, big cities, dangerous zones or in dark desolate areas where a thief can use high powered tools or torches.

If you need more Security (you also will need to put up with the hassle of more Weight) go for:

Kryptonite New York Chain With EV Disc Lock Chain

OnGuard Brute STD 5001 U-lock

Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit U-lock

OnGuard Beast Chain

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock, scammy protection offer, April 23, 2010
By Mark in Tempe (Tempe, AZ USA)
I like the lock. It's for a cheap ($100) bike. When I get a more expensive bike I'll buy the New York Std (yellow sleeve) lock.

I think the Kryptonite locks are a good value. But, the "protection offer" is almost insulting to my intelligence. You have to read the box carefully to realize you're only getting an *offer*, not protection. You can buy protection for 1-2 years. And, the terms of protection are so ridiculously tedious that you wonder why they even offer. The terms sound like they don't want you to use it.

Here's an example: You have to register your keys and serial number of your bike within 15 days. Why a time limit? I bought my lock before receiving my bike. Why should it matter to Kryptonite that I bought the lock 2-3 months ago?

Also, you can't transfer the lock/insurance to another bicycle. Why would Kryptonite care about that? Unless it's just a gimmick to sell more locks?

For a claim, you have to submit the broken lock. What if the thief takes the evidence with him?

I've heard that NYC messengers who ride expensive bikes buy two locks. They take one to a welder to cut/break. They register the keys (and buy protection) for that lock. They use the other other lock. If their bike is stolen, they submit the broken lock which they never used.

I can't blame them for doing that. Kryptonite sets the conditions that you almost have to do that if you want to protect a $1200 bike.

I would give the lock 5 stars. But, because of the fishy "protection offer," I only gave 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Serves its purpose, September 3, 2009
By Katie (Santa Barbara, CA)
This lock works well. It is a little heavy, and I could not attach it to my bike anywhere, so I carry it in my pack. The cable makes it much easier to lock my bike to various racks, and makes it so I can lock up my friends bike at the same time. I would buy this again.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy, but took getting used to, January 9, 2010
By Pearl F. (Seattle, WA United States)
Now that I have the Kryptonite U lock and cable, I feel very comfortable leaving my bike parked at a bike rack on my school's campus where bike theft is common. It took a little practice getting used to locking and unlocking quickly as well as figuring out the best way to carry it while riding my bike (it's a bit heavy), but I would buy this same product over and over again and recommend it to anyone who wants to keep their bike safe from theft.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product, June 17, 2009
By NS (NY, NY USA)
I live in New York and as it's well known, bikes don't stay long in the same location! I left my bike for more than 3 days locked with this lock and found it right I left it when I came back! The additional cable is good and nice for the price. Hate the so called eazy mount though...

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Great while it lasted, October 16, 2010
By Mauricio
This product seem to be strong and durable. I was wrong. I only used it for 5 Days and it was working like it suppose to. Then one day the lock would not open. I tried the spare key and nothing worked. I then pulled it hard and it finally came off but now the rod wont go back in. This item is being returned.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great, reliable lock system, May 19, 2010
By J. Ellerbach (New Orleans)
Great lock, secures the bike and the wheel with ease. My neighbor had a high-end cable lock (no u-lock) and used it to secure her bike to her porch rail three days ago. The cable was cut last night and the bike is already gone. Drop a few bucks for this set. Cheaper than a new bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Brings peace of mind., January 26, 2010
By Brandon
I was using a cord type lock before, but when I got a new bike I knew I had to step up protection. I feel safe whenever I leave my bike locked up with this Kryptonite U lock. Also, the lock opens very smoothly, and although the attachment piece was a little weird to fit on bike it now serves its purpose well.

-If your looking at locks, buy this one. It is fairly cheap and works very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good solid lock... always happy with Kryptonite., November 2, 2009
By T. L. Comtois (Los Angeles, CA)
This is my second lock from Kryptonite and they are they only brand of bike lock I will use. I've had my bike lock for 2 years now and have never had any issues. Easy to use, this one is especially nice because it comes with an attachment so you can secure your lock to your bike while you ride and the cord allows for greater flexibility in where you can lock your bike up. I highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for a great price, August 14, 2010
By Shogun
This lock is great. I live in a large city and go to a HUGE university (Ohio State), but since I ride an older road bike, bike theft isn't that big of a concern. If you have a new bike, live in a bad area, store your bike outside, etc, I would recommend the New York series lock, but in my situation that would be overkill. To be honest this lock is probably a little bit of overkill based on the other types of locks I've seen around campus, but better safe than sorry.

The keys are somewhat flimsy, but no worse than with any other u-bolt lock I've owned. Kryptonite offers one free set of replacement keys when you register them online (no cost for registration), so unless you think you'll break 4 keys I wouldn't worry about it. I don't use the lock mount, but it looks like one's I have used in the past and all of them broke within a few days. You might as well save yourself the extra weight on your frame and put it in a bag. The added cable is awesome! I can lock my front wheel for complete security or lock a few of my friends' bikes up with mine when we go out for a group ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Definitely a good luck, June 15, 2010
By Keivan
I love this lock. It's very reliable and the cable is very useful to tie your seat to it if you have a quick release one. It was to big but if you attach it to the vertical bar of your bike with a slight angle (you can adjust it) it won't bother you. At first uses you will hurt your hand pulling it out of its place but it gets better and it is also easier if you open the lock and then pull out the U part.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does what it is advertised to do, August 4, 2010
By S. Waiblinger
The U-Lock portion is strong enough to deter thieves, and the cable lock that goes with it is long enough to connect your tires to the U-Lock and bike parking rail. The mount is a pain to install and I do not use it. The Velcro tab on the cable lock is a nice touch that allows you to wrap it around the U-Lock for storage. The hole doesn't seem very sturdy, but it should last *knock on wood*.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  This thing is HEAVY duty, November 18, 2010
By Adam Alkouri (San Diego)
When I say HEAVY duty, I mean it. It weights a ton! For me being a avid road biker, the last thing you want to do is add weight. Whats good about this thing is that the bike mount works great, you can align it perfectly with your bike so as not to block wind.

It would be quicker to saw through my bike then to saw through this beast, if your trying to keep your bike safe, I strongly suggest this.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  really good lock, May 3, 2010
By Nitscha
I wanted to have a really good lock, because by old bike got stolen and a lot of other bikes in my area too. so I bought this one and the OnGuard Bulldog MINI DT, because I thought it is better to have two not too expensive locks than one really expensive. The bike before also had a quite expensive lock, but still got stolen. But now I only use both locks at night. This one is totally enough to lock it during the day. Nearly everyone in my area uses this one now.
And though it is quite big, it is not too heavy to carry it with you. I always have it hanging on my handlebar while riding.
Best buy for this price!

But the material is very good and works very well.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  U-Bolt was cut and my bike was stolen., March 21, 2012
By AliRose
I bought this lock a little over a year ago. The lock is quite large and very heavy, but that is what I wanted so I could be sure that my bike, which I use everyday to get to work, would be safe. My bike was locked to a pole outside my apartment the other night. All I heard was a clang, so thought it was nothing, only to wake up to find the cut u bolt and my bike was gone.

In short, thieves can quickly cut through this lock without any noisy or electric tools.

Ive had this lock for 3 days and it is the best lock there is. For adult sized bikes the 4 foot flex cable does NOT fit through the front tire, and back tire. That is no problem though, as this is an excellent lock, all components function properly.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Tough Little Sucker, June 21, 2011
By Jay (SF Bay Area, CA)
This is my second Kryptonite lock and it is a great deal for those value minded but dont want to sacrifice security. My First one is my New York Fahgettaboudit which is heavy duty security but also very bulky. Depending on the duration of how long I will leave my bike out and where I park my bike determines what lock I will use. If I know I will need heavy security for high theft areas, hands down I go for the NY Fahgettaboudit lock. But for my short leisurely rides I use the Kryptolok since it is much lighter and less bulky. Kryptonite is a great company but I just wish they would develop a more sturdy attachment to my bike. Normally I carry my locks in my bag and in the long run its easier. For those who want to secure your bike with piece of mind (but heavy on the wallet) i would go for the Fahgettaboudit, but for those who want a good lock with also little to worry about without hurting the bank, go for the kryptolok. I highly suggest you use the cable for securing only your wheels and parts while utilizing the U lock for the actual frame and something solid (ie pole, bike rack, etc) and not the other way around. Be safe out there folks.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  1 Month of usage, June 6, 2011
By Henson Oh
I commute to my school from my apt, but I NEVER leave my bike on campus overnight

One night, after a long day of studying, my friend offers me a ride. Being in my exhausted state, I take him up on his offer and leave my bike locked overnight. Come back the next morning and whattaya know? My bike is gone!
I had both my bike and lock for a month. Poooey!

Bike thieves will get through whatever lock given time and their determination. Be wary, and no lock will ensure your bike's security.

Great while it lasted though, I guess. Key never jammed or anything, but the mount they provide for you sucks. I had to take off both my water cages in order to use the provided lock mount. If you have a compact frame, don't even think about using the mount. It takes up so much unnecessary space! Better to keep your lock in your backpack or something

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid, elegant and functional. A good overall lock, May 29, 2011
By frank3473
The lock is working perfectly to keep the bike in the same place where I parked. There is not much to say about this lock other than it is doing what is supposed to.

Size-wise, the lock is perfect to hug stop signs, bike racks and up to 8" tubes.

Operation is really simple. Unlock and the whole shackle comes out of the lock mechanism. The key will not release while the shackle is not in place. It comes with two keys.

The additional cable is lengthy enough to loop around the front tire, and although solid in construction, the manual says not to tie the bike to a post with it.

The lock holder can be attached easily to any bike frame, although you may need a bit of reconfiguration to get it right. Once it is in place, it does a good job keeping the lock in place.

Regarding all that protection offer, come on, this is a $40 lock, not an insurance policy. Common sense is the best ally to this lock to do its job right.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good U-Lock, Terrible bracket, March 27, 2011
By NinjaBiker
From what I can see of the u-lock, it is very sturdy and seems to be working fine after a few uses. The flex cable is great for locking the front wheel without having to take it off. However, I wouldn't trust this u-lock with my $700 bike overnight at a dark lonely location but I doubt I would trust anything short of mafia insurance to protect my bike overnight. It works great for how I am using it which is locking my bike up during the daytime. I am still planning on putting my bike inside my house during the night though. However, what lowers my rating of this item by one star is the bracket. One of the reasons why I bought this u-lock is because of the bracket, which proved to be completely unusable. Whoever designed this bracket deserves to be fired for incompetence. The person is one of three things: 1) An idiot 2) Someone who doesn't own a bike 3) A giant with a giant bike. Unless you ride a giant bike you will not be able to use this bracket. It is designed for a 4 inch u-lock but comes with a 9 inch instead. There is just no way to fit this bracket onto my 54cm frame road bike without being unable to ride it. Plus, it is extremely difficult to adjust the bracket without having to unscrew it because of a design flaw involving cheap plastic and a flathead screwdriver. All in all, good u-lock, useless bracket.

Pros:
U-lock is durable
So far, u-lock doesn't seem to get stuck
Useful cable

Cons:
USELESS BRACKET

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice secure lock, March 17, 2011
By fleisc66
I needed a good reliable lock for commuting to campus. This Kryptonite U-Lock/cable combo has been serving me well for about 2 months now with no problems whatsoever. I am able to secure both wheels with the cable and frame to a bike rack easily. The mount works well with my bike, but I can see it being an issue on frames that are not made with round tubing. It is built well and looks to be a real pain for the typical thief to cut through. I wouldn't trust it in a dark alley somewhere, but for any typical public place, this lock should be more than enough. You need to be sure the key is fully inserted into the lock before turning it or you will have trouble. I have had no issues with the lock mechanism; if you can't easily turn the key, it is likely not fully in the lock. Also, it is good to put a drop of oil in the lock once in a while to keep it working smoothly, particularly if you ride out in the elements. I definitely recommend this lock combo.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does the job. It's a bit heavy, July 9, 2011
By Takeshi Katsumoto
I've had this lock for a few months now and use it to lock my bike when i'm at work.

Pro:
- It does the job and the included cable is great. I have a quick release front wheel so i just run the cable through it and into the lock and i'm set.
- Lock is thick and long enough to put around 2 bikes and a street sign's pole.

Con:
- Kryptonite offers a part that allows the lock to be attached to the bike but the lock is so large it does not fit in the larger triangle section of the bike frame. With the removal of the bottle cage it fits my 56cm road bike but it rattles around so it had to be removed.
- It is heavy. With the cable, the lock is 3lbs of added carry weight.

I like the lock but i do have to carry it around in a backpack. It is definitely safer than locking your bike up with just a cable.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  don't buy this lock if you are doing it for the theft insurance, June 5, 2011
By lucidbuyer
This lock set is very, very heavy for a bicycle. I agree with the other reviewer that the "theft insurance" coverage is a joke. You can NOT register your lock online for the theft coverage. You can register the keys online in case you loose your keys, but not for the theft insurance. It also says you have to gather up your reciepts and copy them and mail them in within 15 days of lock purchase. It seems like they make the process of registering the lock a real pain in the butt hoping that you will not register the product. I would not buy from Krytonite again.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good sturdy lock, just my size!, December 15, 2010
By J. Hall (San Francisco, CA)
I can't comment on whether the lock is strong enough to leave your bike outside in a crime-ridden neighborhood, since I don't do that. So I'll leave that part of the review to people who do. I use mine to lock my bike while I'm doing something nearby, like at a park, or going into a store, etc. It fits most things I want to lock the bike to, and when it doesn't, the extra cable expands its capabilities. I usually use just the U-lock, but carry the cable just in case, since it doesn't take up much room in my backpack.

The lock works fine, the key works fine, and the only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5, was that the thingie that comes with it to carry the lock on your bike wasn't that great. Too complicated to install and use. Easier to just toss the lock in your backpack, or slip it over the handlebars.

But other than that, I'm very happy with the product. I had my SUV broken into recently, and my last bike was stolen out of the back. If I had had the lock back then, I could have locked it to cargo rings in the back of my SUV, and although nothing is 100% burglar-proof, it might have presented just enough of an inconvenience to break, that they would have just given up and left. 20/20 hindsight!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock for low to medium crime areas or as secondary lock, October 15, 2010
By M. Dampier
General information:
I live in a moderate to high crime area so I use this lock as a secondary lock, or a well populated area for a short amount of time. Lock is easy to lock and unlock but make sure you insert the key ALL THE WAY before turning the key. So long as the key is inserted all the way I have had no problems with the key not turning or lock not opening. As a secondary lock I use it to lock my tire to my frame so that I don't have to worry about someone taking off with my tire. I use the cable to secure my seat so that a thief will at least have to cut the cable before my seat is gone. As a primary lock I recommend that you access your bike crime area first. Always use the u-lock to attach your frame to a pole or rack and a tire if you have room. The cable is not very secure so only use that as a secondary lock means and don't use it to lock your bike to a pole or rack.

Bottom line:
Lock works well in lower to moderate crime areas or as a quick secondary lock. Lock bracket is convenient so I don't have to put the lock in my backpack and have it poke me. Cable is not very useful considering it can be cut relatively quickly and easily so don't depend on it as a primary means of bike security. However, cable can be useful for securing something like a seat so long as you have a gap in your seat or there is room to snake the cable someplace else.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great value for a nice lock and cable set..., June 4, 2010
By J. Lewallen (Triad Area, NC USA)
This is a great bike lock/cable combo. It's larger than I expected which really has been a good thing since I have never had a problem securing my bike with this lock. It also cam with a mounting bracket so you can attach it to your bike frame and not have to carry this in a back pack. I am very happy with this purchase and would buy again.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Key jams after a while, May 4, 2011
By Factum (Hollywood, CA)
It's a very strong lock, but after about a year of normal use, the key starts to fail. I have to wiggle the key left and right for it to either lock or unlock, else, the key won't turn all the way.

Based on my experience, it will go for about a year of normal use (Monday through Friday) before it starts jamming.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock! Cable is a little short, though., February 28, 2012
By Longhorn Longboarder
Exactly as the title says, comes with a cool little clasp so that you can attach the lock to your bike frame instead of having to stick it in your back pocket, pants, or backpack. Makes me feel much better about locking up my bike in a public place, and the cable is a little short, still functional and isn't the easiest to store while riding from one location to another, but hey it works well.

I'd buy another one without a doubt.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect!, August 19, 2010
By perpetual scholar (SJ, CA)
Received the lock in record shipping time and it looks great! Thanks for helping to keep the bike safe and making it affordable to do so. Everyone recommended the Kryptonite U-locks and I'm so happy I listened to them and ordered from here instead of in stores. Also, super happy I ordered the one with the 4 foot flex cable-it makes it a breeze to lock up even in awkward places and I know my bike is safe and sound!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Love it! (Even the holster/attachment that everyone is complaining about.), October 27, 2011
By D. Gutierrez (USA)
Love this lock. Given, I am in a very low-crime area and I only leave my bike unattended for short periods of time (at the gym while I work out, at the library while I get some books, at the post office while I ship a package) - I'm no expert on bike locks, so I can't speak to the security of the lock (see some of the other reviews for that) - but it's worked out well for me.

Now, on to the holster/attachment that everyone is complaining about. Some people say it's troublesome to release the bike lock from the attachment or that it doesn't fit inside their frame.

On the first count, rubbish. I call user error. The attachment is designed to VERY securely keep your lock from falling out while you ride your bike. To this end, it takes a bit of force, but there's no need to smash your fingers every time you take the lock out, as some reviews have been claiming. Simply grab the lock with your fingers and use your thumb as leverage to firmly push/pull the lock out of the attachment. Voila!

On the second count (that it doesn't fit inside the frame in the recommended places) - I agree. My bike doesn't have the space necessary, so I improvised and found that I could mount it on my handlebars with no adverse effects. See the product pictures for a few angles of my mounting job. Since mounting it, I've taken the bike all over town, up and down hills at all speeds for weeks now and experienced no problems whatsoever.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Best solution for the price, October 17, 2011
By cfpaige
The U-lock with cable has been the most convenient solution for my neighborhood. The cable is easy enough to attach through both wheels, and the U-lock is big enough that I can lock the bike through wheel and frame as well as the stand (at the same time). It's mostly rubberized, so doesn't scratch the bike most times, but the U-lock and cable combo doesn't sit comfortably in the provided bracket, so I've been locking it over the back carrier for transport instead, and the one exposed metal part of the lock has chipped some paint off. The option to register the key for replacement is really nice, but the hoops one would have to jump through to get the theft warranty honored seem a bit excessive. So far, however, the lock has worked well and the bike remains happily mine to enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  No problems, September 25, 2011

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid, September 20, 2011
By Cristian
Well the name says it all! I got this lock because it came with an extra cable lock. I didn't know what to expect since i never had a bike lock but once i used it and installed the lock holder to the bike frame I knew my money was well spent. The lock holder releasing button is a bit tricky but with use you'll get the hang of it. No problems with the key opening or the lock unlocking. You'll get peace of mind with this lock. The size is perfect to lock it to almost anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice lock., September 15, 2011
By DAVE S... (SHELBY TWP., MI United States)
This lock is probably a little too large for most bikes. They recommend that you're u-lock, be just big enough to fit over the bike frame tube and rear tire of the bike. That way a thief can't fit a pipe between the frame and the lock and break the u-lock.
But for the price, I think this is a good lock.
I use the 4' lock that came with this u-lock to hold on my seat and a longer and thicker cable to lock the rest of the bike.
Then put both cables through the u-lock and also a boron hardened masterlock.

It's not burglar proof, but I'm hopping it looks uninviting.
The u-lock is very thick and nicely coated to prevent scratches on the bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome Bike lock, September 6, 2011
By Derek
This bike lock is awesome. Went up to Mackinac Island and needed to lock up our expensive bikes so I used 1 day shipping. With the cable it was big enough for both the bikes. The only downside of this lock is it is heavy and I was not able to mount it on the bike since its a FSR.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great deal, but shoddy mount., August 27, 2011
By Brandon
The mount is the most difficult thing I've ever tried to install on my bike. It refused to tighten and the strap holding it to the bike eventually snapped after I tried to tighten it. Great. As for the lock and cable, they seem really sturdy and for the price, I can't really complain.

I'm taking a star off for the mount, but other than that I'm extremely pleased with the lock.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  New to bike locks, May 13, 2011
By Stacey A. Parker
I purchased this lock and cable set to provide extra security for my bike on an urban college campus. Either the cable is a little too short or I'm securing my bike incorrectly. I normally loop some of the cable through the front wheel and frame and then secure it to the u-lock that secures the back tire to the bike rack. So far my bike has stayed relatively safe. One tip: make sure the lock chamber is aligned perfectly or you will be unable to insert the key fully.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  sturdy, but terrible key-lock system, April 3, 2011
By isellbookstoo
used it for about 6 months, now keys are so hard to lock/unlock. it's like.. stuck. like you put in the wrong keys.. except not. some days it takes a second, some other days it just wouldn't unlock at all and i have to run before i'm late for class. maybe it's the wisconsin winter. or maybe the keys are just cheaply made.

probably will buy it again, but only because there are no options. if there are, do tell.

ah, also, the thing that you're supposed to use to clamp the key on your bike. it's cheap plastic and i couldn't even get it to hold without sliding down the bike frame under the weight of the u-lock.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Lock for the price, July 8, 2011
By brwatkin
The lock fits securely and i have no fear of it falling off the mount. The one complaint i have is that the U part of the lock connecting to the locking mechanism (opposite side of the bike mount) rattles when you're riding. I fixed it by wrapping the end of the U with duct tape but i would rather have some type of rubber gasket to stop the rattle.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Heavy & Tough, May 7, 2011
By bAtu
This U-Lock is definitely built strong, thus heavy. Since this is my first U-Lock ever, it took some time to get used to the constraints provided by the fixed U-shaped frame, that is to learn how to place the lock quickly and properly. But once you get it, it works fine.

My only concern is the mounting bracket. I'm pretty much sure that there exists a mounting solution which allows for a closer placement to the frame at least by an inch. Currently, I can barely fit the U-Lock and a bottle cage into a regular road bike frame.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  LOVE it so far., April 26, 2011
By toni (New York, NY United States)
I bought a new bike and had to take the steps so no one would steal it, so I bought this lock combo. So far, so good. I didn't use the lock attachment because I have a girls bike and it won't fit because it doesn't have that men's bar across to hang from, but no big deal. I wrap the locks around the seat and the rack in the back and it stays secure. Can't beat the locks for the price, but i'll update this if my bike actually gets stolen.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  a college bike commuter necessity, February 12, 2011
By April
This is a quality and very heavy duty lock, and the locking mechanism is very easy to manipulate. You NEED the extra cable; someone can stroll by and steal your even if your frame is locked up with the U-lock. I always try to lock both wheels if possible, although the cable is sometimes too short depending on what I'm locking my bike to. The frame holder for the U-lock is a bit crummy and is too small for some parts of my frame, but I eventually got it to work and ended up attaching it to my seat post.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid lock, December 24, 2010
By R. Sullivan (Clemson, SC)
Great bike lock... Seems very solid, and comes with a nice bicycle mount that seems to be much higher quality than previous U-lock mounts I have tried. Has secured my bike for a few weeks in metro Atlanta where a previous cable lock was cut within a few hours of parking in front of my office. I like the option to use the additional cable to secure the wheels. The few extra dollars are worth the additional security to protect a few hundred dollar investment.

larger size means easier to find poles to lock up to, but if your frame is small, harder to fit it on the bike. I like having the cable in case I can't find the right bike rack to lock up to, or to lock up the other wheel.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Could be better, January 10, 2012
By Double S (Davis, California)
After use of couple months, all the parts came loose. I have to re-adjust the positions of rubber band very often. With the band misplaced, you cannot lock it. But the lock itself works very well.

I was actually very frustrated the first time the band was misplaced, because I could not lock the bike until I figured that the band was not where it supposed to be.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Kryptonite has a misleading anti-theft protection, but decent product, December 28, 2011
By Yams (Seattle, WA)
Bought this as a first lock for my bike. For urban commuting in suburbs and low crime areas, this seems to work great. Most other bikes I see have only cable locks, with a few having U-locks. I've read too many accounts of people getting their bikes stolen to use cable locks, and being a worry-bug I don't think I would ever use the cable lock. Was also looking into purchasing the mini U-lock instead but there are a lot of bike racks in my area with large/fat bike rack diameters. No issues with it so far after 2 months opening/closing it, it is heavy on my bike but definitely worth it.

Only potential con is that the bar on the U-lock doesn't look very thick, and is pretty long, so it's pretty easy for bike thieves to gain leverage on it and cut it easily.

Kryptonite's misleading anti-theft protection (This last section applies to Kryptonite as a whole and not just to this product):
Lastly, the "protection" they offer you is worthless. If you read the fine print, they only pay the insurance deductible, NOT the price of your bike. This means that you MUST have your bike insured to even get them to pay a deductible. Another caveat is that in order for Kryptonite to pay the deductible you also need to send in the "sawed" or "broken" lock. If you can imagine, sometimes bike thieves would take the evidence with them, leaving you with nothing. I think the way they advertise this is very misleading and deserves to be mentioned/made public as much as possible to inform innocent consumers/purchasers.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  good lock and cable for price, October 23, 2011
By The Mentat (USA)
This is a good price for a good lock and cable. I already had another Kryptonite lock (the massive one) and wanted another one so I can lock my front tire to the frame.

As opposed to some reviews out there, I found that turning the key is super easy. I was actually surprised how easy it was. Some people said the key broke when they turned it. The only suggestion I can have is to make sure you're holding the "bottom" (straight) part of the lock in your hand when turning the key so the weight won't be on the key.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  High quality lock, March 24, 2011
By XianRL
Can't beat Krptonite's quality. People complain that it's heavy, but what do you expect?! Besides, you can use the mount on your frame so it's not in your bag. The cable isn't heavy and is great through your frame, rear wheel and or chain ring. Definitely a major deterrent to any thief. I wish I had bought the 11-inch U-lock, but that's my fault!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock can stick, May 4, 2011
By ilikedirt
This lock is nice overall. My only issue is that the lock mechanism seems to have several moving parts such that when you insert the key and turn, you may only be turning a portion of the lock at once and will not unlock it. Now that I know this, I am careful to get the key in all the way. I haven't used another U-lock so I can't compare, but I am satisfied with this lock and would buy it again.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good lock but terribly designed holder, January 27, 2012
By Anonymous
The lock itself is really good but the locker holder is terrible. It can hold the lock without any problems but if you want to either adjust the holder's strap or remove the lock, it becomes a struggle. I couldn't adjust the strap so I just cut it and carry the lock in my backpack now. If Kryptonite fixes this problem, I would give them a five star.

For the price, I think this is a very good lock.

It's not the most secure lock in the world, but it's significantly sturdier than the locks sold at the big box stores.

I also haven't had any trouble with the mount. I previously had a different brand of lock and the mount was terrible. This mount works well.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  meh, January 20, 2012
By Cartel
The U-lock is pretty solid and I never worry about chaining up my $500 bike for a few hours at a time. The cable is a nice addition to secure my front wheel, but I can see it being cut through pretty easily with a hefty cable cutter.
For its price and weight, I'm very happy with the lock.

Unfortunately, the lock holder is made of plastic and isn't that great; I stopped using it and just put the lock in my backpack. And worst of all.. THE KEY SUCKS. The metal is super malleable and easily deforms. After reading others' reviews, I have been very careful with the key and it is still dented like crazy. It still fits into the lock, but takes a little shimmying.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lock Jams, February 18, 2012
By Jeremiah 20:9 (Chicago (USA)
I have had the same problem with the lock jamming. You can work around the problem by looking inside the lock and lining up the outer part of the lock with the inner part of the lock. Yes, I know...major pain..why sell a faulty product?? It has been ESPECIALLY frustrating for me when I am trying to lock up my bike at the train station and catch a train...never knowing if I will get the lock to work. Fortunately, I have always managed to work the lock. Return it? Well, I'm sure I kept the receipt but don't know where it might be, nor do I have the time in my schedule to write the company, and the lock is almost 2 years old. But for the person who's going to be critical of my review--because we all know about nasty reviewers--I simply cannot go through the trouble of trying to return the product as I work full-time and care half-time for my invalid mother (my sister and I decided to take turns living with her rather than put her in a nursing home). Hence, I continue to play with the lock to get it to work.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best Bike Lock Ever!, February 10, 2012
By BonTrager
I spent a small fortune on my bike so I was looking for a lock that would protect my investment but was convenient enough to carry around on my bike. The kryptonite is all that and more. With it's own special lock and key system unique to each lock means that you know that no one else has the same key as you. I really like the design of it as well as the material that is strong enough to tow a car, (yes funny story but I actually had to use it to do just that.) If you spent a lot of money on a good bike, why buy a cheap lock. Protect your bike with the reliable lock!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bike protection, February 1, 2012
By J. Hartlein (Annapolis, MD)
Overall I'm very happy with this purchase. Yes, its heavy but that is the trade off for great bike protection. I did a lot of research before buying this lock and, for the money, I don't feel you'll get a better lock. Living in an extremely bike friendly town (Fort Collins, CO) this bike lock holds up to the $60-100 locks. Highly recommend!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Secure, but bad mouting device, March 24, 2012
By dylanaxel
This is a very secure bike lock i like having the cable because my front tire is a quick release i even put the cable through my helmet sometimes when i lock it up when i go to the store. It seems to be very thick high grade metal lock (kind of heavy if weight is a big deal). The mounting device is where i was not to happy you tighten it if you even can and it clicks into little spot (like on rollerblades) but you then can not loosen it so if you make it to tight o well better make it work some how or just throw the lock in a back pack.

Only reason for only 3 stars is because they made a cheap Mounting device for a good lock

Fine construction for a local jaunt to the store. You will need a better lock if you leave it overnight or at a bus station. I use my lock when I have my bike on roof rack on my car just for extra insurance. U-locks can be broken with scissors jacks so make sure you route the lock in a way that it cannot be pried open.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Cable is worthless! Bike was stolen :-(, February 26, 2012
By ckk234
I locked up the frame of my bike to a bike rack with the Ulock. I used the cable to secure a second bike to mine. A thief cut the cable and stole the second bike. My bike, secured with the Ulock, was still there. So don't depend on the cable. Usually, I use the cable to secure my front easy-release wheel but now I wonder what good it even does. Really, what's the point of having a cable if thieves can just cut it? I guess I thought the kryptonite cable would be more durable. Now I'm shopping for a chain link to secure my wheel since the Ulock does not fit over my bike frame, wheel, and bike rack.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great lock, May 1, 2012
By E
This lock is great and solid. It is big enough to cover the frame and wheel of the bike and the cable it comes with fits just right for locking the front wheel back to the main lock. I didn't even use the mount, I don't trust it. I keep the lock in my book bag, which I always have on me, the lock is not as heavy as it seems once in a book bag.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  good lock hard to install, April 29, 2012
By Priya Choudhry
I read great reviews of this lock on amazon and ordered it. I and my friend then spent 1.5 hours trying to install the lock holder onto my bike. The locking belt that is generally pretty easy to install was so tight that we had to use a metallic holder to hold it in place and use 2 screwdrivers to pry it open while a 2nd person pushed the locking belt though the hole. God forbid it I need to change the position of the holder ever again!!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  great bike lock, April 26, 2012
By Octaviano M Ledesma Jr
This lock is plenty to make stealing my mountain bike more trouble than it's worth ($300 retail)
it's convenient - has a mount to attach it to the bike while riding and a cable to include the bikes

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice U-Lock, TERRIBLE mounting bracket., April 25, 2012
By Daniel S. Lukens
I purchased this for my new bike that I assembled myself and trying to get the mounting bracket that came with it to work was the MOST difficult part of my build. It's made of crappy plastic, nearly impossible to get tight and after I finally did get it on as tight as humanly possible, it slipped off and I lost the rubber strip part of it on my first 15 minute ride.

The U-lock and the flex cable are nice and appear to be good quality, but I'm going to have to find another way of attaching my U-lock to the frame.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Attachment mechanism is poorly designed, April 20, 2012
By Twilight_biker
There's a reason all the bikers in San Francisco have their locks in their back pockets. The plastic device meant to hold the lock to the bike is unbelievably badly designed. Rather than having something that can be attached with tools/screws, you have to shove a plastic strip through an extremely narrow slot that can't be levered open with tools. I almost gave up numerous times, and was resigned to carrying this lock around in my back, like a schmuck. 45 minutes of frustration. If you're only looking for a lock, then the lock is just fine.

Come on, Kryptonite, where are your engineers??

4.0 out of 5 stars.  As Expected, Good Use for Rural, Some Urban Areas, March 31, 2012
By thetoofguy (Boston, MA USA)
Pros:
1) Krypto Brand
2) New designed key with cover
3) Comes with the front tire cable
4) Price Less than 35

Cons:
1) Long U portion; more susceptible to theft, hard to find a place to attach to my bike

Wouldn't use it for my daily commuter use in an urban place, but good for couple of hours, weekend outside the cafe. Otherwise go with a short U, Kryto chain, or never let it out of your site.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Hassel to carry but DOES THE JOB, May 17, 2012
By la paz
This lock is great. Sometimes I only need the U-lock but depending on where I am going, I will bring the cable. I place the cable across my chest when I ride. Just get some padding if the cable hurts your shoulders. Also, Kryptonite lets you register your key number on their site just incase you "misplaced" the 2 that already come with them. They will send you a free one. Cable length is good. Have yet to attach the black holder that goes on the bike so you can place the u-lock.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A bit of overkill..., May 5, 2012
By Martin J. Coady (Mexico)
for my situation. However, if you are in a situation where you leave the bicycle unattended for several or overnight, this is the product for you. I have read that given some time the bad guys can still get your bike somehow, but I'm not creative enough in that sort of thinking to speculate as to how. It does weigh a good bit, which is disclosed in the specifications and other reviews, but the translation of that information to a reality was a bit disconcerting at first. I got used to the extra weight quickly.

The lock comes with a small plastic clip that is intended to hold the lock on the bicycle frame for transport. The clip is designed to fit a standard road bike frame so it did not work for me as I have a cruiser style, commuter bike with a larger diameter frame. This might also affect those extruded aluminum frames (I hope that is the right term) such as Cannondale makes. Perhaps there is an after marked clip, but I just carry mine in my saddlebags. It could be transported by placing it around the seat post, but I haven't tried that so I don't know how that would work out.
