4.0 out of 5 stars.  An alternative to a Dahon, May 5, 2008
By pekelopd (NYC New York)
Although not as light or well built as a Dahon (Broadwalk model), I find this bike to be a decent alternative. Fenders are made of plastic, luggage rack is convienent, nicely supplied nylon protective bag for the bike in the folded position. Front and rear hand brakes, (no coaster brakes). What I didn't like about the bike is that the crank arm is made of plastic. Although thick, it's just chromed plastic. About $40-60 less than the Dahon Broadwalk.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  It's a heavy bike for train commuters, November 23, 2008
By D. Logan (Boston, MA)
First off, It is not that easy to put together and take apart. If you like pinching your fingers on a daily basis, then this is the kind of bike for you. Also, I bought it so I would make the train but it takes forever to unfold it and fold it. It also weights alot more than expected. So, I would say if you think you want to buy a fold away bike go to your local bike shop first then buy online.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Well built, fun to ride., December 6, 2009
By travelerfolk.com (Houston, Texas)
We had this bike for over a year and ride daily, mostly in our subdivision, and have not had to do any thing but fill air in the tires and adjust the brakes since first arrival. It arrive damaged in shipping. The plastic chain guard was broken and the crank arm and sprocket were bent. Pacific cycle sent the chain guard immediately and sent the wrong crank a month later. Never mind, I was able to bang the crank back into shape with a rubber hammer (made of soft aluminum apparently) and it rode fine. This bike is small and does not have gears. It takes more effort and goes slower than a larger wheeled bike. If you ride for excercise mostly as we do, this is not an issue. The smaller wheels make this bike smaller when folded which is handy expecially for folding a putting into the car. For the size of bike, it is heavy but still lighter than our 20" folding bike. Most people seem to like the appearance of this bike. The bike rack is sturdy and has proved quite useful carring small boxes home for the community mail boxes. The plastic fenders have worked well and do not seem to break easily. The folding is accomplished easily enough but there are opportunities to pinch oneself, especially with the pedal. The bag does make it easier to handle but is not worth bothering with when putting it in the back of the SUV. All in all we are happy with this bike and think it is a good value.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Schwinn epitomizes walmart quality, August 25, 2009
By lol free trial prime (Raleigh NC)
I can say that this product isn't misleading in the sense that, Yes it is a bike, and Yes it does fold; aside from this i cannot speak more so on its behalf but i can say the 4 star rating is ill-deserved. It came with a bent wheel, a bent front gear(complete with dangling chain) and a general feeling of hate and disdain for the customer when you opened the clearly abused packaging. Quick work with a hammer and I was able to salvage it, but i cannot say this product is for anyone suffering from anger issues or a history of violence. If you want a bike that folds, and have time, you can easily have this fixed at a shop. For its hefty price tag, as compared to other similar products, it was the mediocre cousin of sub par. Buyer beware unless you are willing to invest money beyond the initial cost of the bike.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  nothing good I'm afraid, January 30, 2010
By Mr. Vladimir C. Rylski (SEATTLE, WA, US)
1) The box was old, torn, as if eaten by rats, patched up with some cardboard made a terrible first impression;
2) the single speed - claimed to be an advantage - is absolutely obsolete; you wouldn't be able to ride uphill (or agains the wind) on on speed gear;
3) minor , but essential - only one pedal was of folding type - why not the other ? to sum up : a big disappointment, I didn't even unpack it. Cheers Vlad

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for the price, really folds, July 10, 2010
By pj13
Arrived in crushed box, but bike was fine. Works like shown, and easy to fold. Rides fine. I had bike repairer check and adjust everything. I MADE A MISTAKE, was going to buy 7 speed but chose wrong. but my bike guy says maybe i did right. I get messed up changing gears. For now will build up my riding abilities til i can ride a geared bike. And i am afraid to ride on streets, so i can drive this where i want to go, cause it folds.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice bike, good value, September 2, 2010
By jm_1951 (Punta Gorda, FL USA)
This is a pretty nice little bike, within certain limits. I've had mine about 6 weeks now.

I've had various bikes before, including a Cannondale racing bike and a Brompton folding bike that I bought in 1997 for about $1000, which ended up getting stolen.

OK, so this Schwinn isn't quite as convenient to fold as the Brompton and it doesn't have gears, but it doesn't cost that kind of money, and it IS a nice little bike that is useful for running about on a campus type environment, in a subdivision, in a park, or around town for short distances.

I live in Florida where the terrain is all flat, and I find that the single gear gets me around briskly enough and that I can make adequate headway when riding into the wind.

As I am at the top end of the weight range for this bike, I find that the brakes are somewhat lacking in stopping power even when well adjusted, and wouldn't recommend this machine for running down steep hills.

I did replace the original saddle with one that has a bit more padding and springs to absorb the bumps, attached a pair of handlebar extenders to give a bit more reach, and buy a rubber tie-down strap to hold it all together when folded. It is really important to get the angle of the saddle adjusted just right, because you are sitting in an upright position with a lot of weight on your rear, which can become uncomfortable over time.

The bike runs very smoothly and I enjoy going out on it. Being a folder, you can easily store it indoors or carry it in the trunk of a car, which makes it more versatile than a full size bike. I use mine mainly for exercise.

By the way, I would disregard any spiel about the noble history of Schwinn bicycles. The company went bankrupt and the factory closed in about 1980. The brand name was bought by another company, and my bike was made in China. Still, it is a nice little bike and seems like a decent value. I don't think you are paying over the odds for the Schwinn badge.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Starter Folding Bike!, September 13, 2008
By SD of DE (Delaware)
I'm quite pleased with this bike. I think its a great starter folding bike for a teenager or adult who is new to folding bikes. Everything arrived assembled except for inserting the pedals. Not a real issue at all for me. Also, I'm a heavier rider whose weight is within the maximum range and this bike is durable enough to support me comfortably.

Although one of the pedals folds, it would be more ideal in my opinion to have both pedals fold. Also, I wish they made a lighter weight version of this bike with atleast a 3, 5 or 6 speed internal hub shifter.

Overall this bike is a bargain, rides okay for the city and along paved bike trails.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for the price! Not every folding bike has to be a Caddy!, August 3, 2010
By stoogeswoman (Los Angeles, CA United States)
I know there are a lot of folding bike enthusiasts who look down on the "cheap folding bikes" like this one, which I bought two years ago. But my mother-in-law made a good point: when I told her there were probably better quality folders on the market if you could afford them, she said, "Sure, and Cadillacs are better quality cars than VW Bugs, but not everyone can afford them - and they both get you to the grocery store!"

So if you're on a limited budget and just need a nice bike to ride around the neighborhood and occasionally toss in the trunk to have with you for the beach or the park, this is just fine. In fact, I just recently started riding it again, after letting my mother-in-law use it for a few months. While it's not all that comfortable, it did take me on a nice 10-mile round trip on a bike trail at the beach this morning, and last week I used it to get some packages to the Post Office when my car had a flat. For about $160 that's not too bad.

Also, yes, as others have mentioned, it is a bit heavy so probably wouldn't work if you need to carry your bike around a lot, or if you have trouble lifting heavy objects. But frankly I like the heavier weight, as it makes the bike feel more stable to ride.

Just one thing: DEFINITELY plan on replacing the saddle when you get it!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Defective and broken on Arrival, December 16, 2010
By Rami
This bike arrived with a broken piece of plastic for a chain covering and the chain itself fell off instantly because it turned out that the cog it turned on was bent out of shape so there wasn't even a chance it would run. Pretty worthless and was a lot of inconvenience so I strongly recommend against buying this, especially since another reviewer had exactly the same two issues and so this is not an isolated occurrence.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Warped chain wheel right out of the box, July 10, 2010
By Chi
I was eager to ride my Schwinn Hinge but when my son arrived to inflate the tires and replace the seat with a more comfortable one, he noted that the chain wheel was warped right out of the box, which made the bike unusable. Whatever happened to quality control? Luckily, UPS can pick the bike up and ship it back to Amazon.com, which is a benefit of buying with them.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Shipping Damage, March 2, 2012
By py2012
I ordered a folding bicycle and it arrived damaged, so i returned it and had them ship another and it was damaged in the same place, so had to return that one as well. The bike itself seemed to be of good quality but the box it was shipped in was damaged in the exact same spot on both shipments, causing damage to the bike making it unusable. At this time cannot recommend this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Complete crap, September 3, 2011
By lethisuber (Washington DC, United States)
There used to be a time when Schwinn meant quality. Now, it's completely Wal-Martized. Don't waste your money because it will arrive in such horrible shape that it will rust in a few months time and break after a few uses. So, if you are like me and looking for a commuter bike, look else where.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Could be better., October 23, 2011
By printboy
Out of the box, the hinge bolt was very stiff, and needed a punch and hammer to loosen it. This has improved on use. The tires rubbed on the splash guards, and the brake blocks, and the tires did not stay inflated as I would expect. To transport this product, one should tie the wheels together, and also the folded handlebars, before bagging it. The carry bag is a good idea.
On flat terrain the bike was excellent for cruising, but the single gear made slopes an effort.
Good bike for going to the shops in flatland.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  nice little cruiser, June 1, 2011
By lady elle
it won't get you anywhere in a hurry but that's not really the purpose of a cruiser now is it?! in hindsight multiple gears would have been ideal but it's been a nice little ride to and from my neighborhood grocer and gym. Fits nicely all folded up in my basement as well. On the whole not bad Schwinn.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  LOVE IT!, January 19, 2011
By Lisa
I am using the bike in Florida. Surfaces are flat - no need to change gears. I haven't biked for years and bought two for both my husband and myself. I feel like a kid again. Best thing I've bought in years! We are having a GREAT time with them!

This bike is just perfect for my husband and I who are using them to get to the subway. Our terrain is totally flat, wich is what you want with this bike since there are no gears. It was super easy to put together, and we are not good at putting things together. I would recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Starter Bicycle, July 6, 2010
By Laura L Goosby (Poughkeepsie, NY, US)
It's a great starter bicycle if you haven't biked in a while and have limited storage space. I really like it. I keep it in my trunk. It does take a few times to learn how to fold/unfold it properly and tighten the latches (I had someone who was familiar with bicycles help me), but once you understand what to do, it's fairly easy to assemble it. The bike is heavy (about 38 lbs), and I used to "feel its weight" in my car, but now I'm used to it. Also, it took some time for me to learn to put it in my trunk; nevertheless, I am happy I purchased it. In my opinion, the convenience of being able to take the bike with me and ride it whenever I want to outweighs any minor negative reviews I have.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  The bike is satisfactory, April 29, 2012
By tim vick (Northfield, Minnesota USA)
As noted in other reviews, the Schwinn folding bike is a bit heavier than other brands, and the fact that it only has one gear is a limiting factor. But for the price I think it is satisfactory. We plan to use the two bikes we bought for short trips around towns when we're cruising on our boat and have to go to a grocery store from the marina etc. We have a friend with a Dahon folding bike that we tried out as well, and the Dahon is definitely a nicer bike but it costs nearly double the price, and for we are going to be doing, the Schwinn will be good enough. If you're going to use the bike a lot, I'd go for the Dahon, but for occasional use, the Schwinn will work.

The bikes were delivered with no damage in a reasonable amount of time. Some of the brake levers, fenders etc. were somewhat out of line, either because of sloppy quality control in the assembly process or because of being knocked around in shipping, but there was nothing that couldn't be fixed in a few minutes with hand tools. Nothing was broken or seriously bent.

The bikes ride just fine on paved, reasonably level surfaces and should be handy for short trips around town or around a state park campground.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good bike if it is not this heavy by folding bike standard, April 19, 2012
By M. R. WONG
First off, 1) the Look - the look of the bike is good, sort of sporty, paint is good 2) steering wheel - the steering wheel is fixed length, the locking mechanism is good and feels strong and sturdy 3) seat - the seat is comfortable, the seat post is heavy, very heavy for a seat post 4) folding mechanism of the frame, which is good yet if you try to carry the bike in folded position, it has a tendency to unfold itself very easily, so be sure to get a strap to tie the wheels together. also, the bike is not easy for kids or ladies to fold and unfold it since it is heavy and you have to be able to hold it with one hand while the other hand is doing the folding or unfolding 5) brakes - brakes are as god as they should be, just like any other bikes' brakes 6) weight - this is the major disappointment. I have weighted it, it is 40 lbs. as i said before even just the seat post was far heavier than my other folding bike's. the frame, the steering post, the seat post are all made of steel, very heavy stuff although strong 7) the steps - one is foldable, the other is fixed 8) speed - it is a one speed bike. it is okay to ride on flat surface or slight uphill and downhill is fine. by the way, the crank is not plastic, someone says it is, but it is chrome paint on metal underneath 9) price - price-wise, it is quite okay. the bike won't withstand rain as it is low-grade steel and will rust, but it is strong, yet very heavy for carrying it on subway often. It is good if one has a garage and don't have to carry the bike up to the second floor or third floor apartment units. it is good for flat surface as it only comes with one single gear. Since it is cheap, can't expect too much. If one wants a better quality bike, look at citizenbike.com or downtube.com, its NOVA bike is on sale.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  mini bike, January 29, 2012
By Christopher Long
This bike is okay. It is sort of lite as I was going over a curve I popped an accidental wheelie. This bike will get the job done of getting me to the train on time and insuring that I have a seat when I get on ( Yay!) .
