Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide

Finding the Right Bike
To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:

The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

  • Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
  • Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
  • Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

  • Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
  • Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
  • High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultralightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

  • Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
  • Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half, and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
  • Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories
When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:

  • Helmet (this is a must!)
  • Seat pack
  • Lock
  • Hydration pack, or water bottle and bottle cage
  • Spare tubes
  • Portable bike pump
  • Gloves

3.0 out of 5 stars.  You Get What You Pay For, January 14, 2009
By Sean G. Daly
As the "3 star" rater said, the bike seems to come damaged in the mail. One of my wheel rims is bent, the bike shop tried to "true" it, but it creates a little wobble when riding. Unfortunately a new wheel is 40-60 dollars.

The BAD:

The actual bike is made and china, and thus has some cheap parts. I've had the bike for about a month, and have foreseen numerous repairs that will eventually have to be made.

The bike also has a cheap gearshift, and even after it being adjusted by bike professionals it still jumps somewhat.

The folding quality is poor in that it will take you a good 10 minutes to fold it up. You also need to buy some bungee cords to hold it together after it folded.

This bike is extremely heavy for a folding bike. At least 40 pounds. Not buy if you will have to carry the bike for long distances.

The paint chips very easily.

THE GOOD:

Brakes (once adjusted) work extremely well. I guess the better make sure you aren't going to die on it.

It rides very smoothly when the gear shifter is working right. Very maneuverable.

The heavy frame is a detriment in carrying it, but comes in handy having a tough frame for a general solid ride. You don't really feel like you are riding a toy bike. It also protects from bends when transporting. It even has a derailer guard to protect it from getting bumped.

The seat it comes with is of extremely good quality as well as the handlebars.

It comes with a carrying bag, cheap but should last a little while at least.

Conclusion...

I paid 215.00 including shipping (well 230, since a tune up cost $15 which all bikes not sold from a bike shop need), which i feel was a far price considering this is a cheap beginners folding bike. However, I would unlikely buy it again.

I would rather pay the $440 for a dahon that is lighter and faster to fold. Dahon also offers a 16 inch wheel bike that is even more versatile as well as offering full size bikes that can be folded, some of which are tough mountain bikes.

Schwinn is nothing to scoff at, and that is why I passed up all other folding bikes on amazon. None of them (maybe minus one name brand) were worth even taking a second look at.

I would really like to give the bike four stars, but I can't solely because of the heavy weight, time consuming folding, and cheap derailleur. I can't give it a 2 because the bike is still worth the money rides nicely in general.

I would not, and have not taken the bike on a bus due to its heavy weight and bulky size even when folded. However it is effective on the BART or any bullet train situation because of more space.

I have written such a long review because i have had a month to test ride this thing and I feel it is my duty to inform consumers of my experience.

If you can spare the extra change get a dahon, but if you are tight on cash then go ahead and get this, but be aware that you do not have a folding bike. YOU HAVE A BIKE THAT FOLDS.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  singlejewishladyinregopark, October 18, 2008
By MISSPUSSYCATINFORESTHILLSNY (Forest Hills, NY)
I just received it from Amazon last week, set it up immediately, and only took it to the bike store to make sure of everything. It does NOT ride like a toy, as one customer said, but is far more steady than any Dahon I've ridden. It's a bit too heavy for me to lift up, but others may not find that a problem. Once you get the catch open - it's difficult because a lot of pressure is needed, but that's for safety reasons - it folds easily. For a man, this would be easier. An absolute pleasure to have the LOOP AT THE BOTTOM, AND NOT TO HAVE TO PUT MY LEG OVER A HIGHER BAR. The handle bar is fixed and can't be adjusted, but it's fine for me. The seat is adjustable, though. Goes up hills easily. This is far superior to the citizen bikes, in my opinion, with their rickety chain that falls off easily. It is rather larger than appears in the pictures, so look at the specifications carefully. I was surprised that Schwinn put it into such a shabby carton for the trip from China and then to other places before it came to me. All I did was rip the side of the carton open, and the bike slid out (folded, of course.)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  what a ride!, May 27, 2008
By peaseblossom
What a fun little bike this is! It folds well, they were very thoughtful about the placement of everything when folded. It's very sturdy.I compared it to the Dahon, and while that is very slick and expensive this serves the purpose just as well.It does ride like a toy bike but with 20" wheels thats about what you expect. My range on it is about 10 miles round trip. That's about as far as i'm willing to go. More than that and you'd want a big bike. But it is perfect for city shopping and upstairs apartment living. I would buy it again.
Oh, you do want to take it to the bike shop for a tune up and adjustments beofre you ride it, though. I hear that's normal for all online bikes. The bike shops tune and adjust for you if you buy from them. Add that to the cost when thinking about prices.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Terrific Bike, October 4, 2009
By Timinps (Palm Springs, CA)
I am somewhat of a seasoned cyclist of 60 years and after owning one of these and putting a some miles on it, just had to write a review; I plan to purchase a second one soon for my partner. I was at first concerned about this bike being able to support my 230-240 lb body; I researched it a bit and the specs say it supports 300 lbs, so my weight has not been a problem. This bike rides very well and has low rolling resistance, good tires, great brakes and gears. It gets many looks on the bike trail and is basically a pleasure to own. Owning a PT Cruiser also, it folds readily and there is plenty of room for other cargo, including a second Schwinn Loop, is light weight and easy to lift in and out of the car. I did put a wider more comfortable saddle on it but that is the only change I have needed to make. Its a great traveler. I drive between Palm Springs and Ocean Park WA twice a year and use it to explore the bike trails on the overnight stops. Highly recommend. T. Johnson, Palm Springs, CA.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A lot of bike for the buck..., October 3, 2008
By GR Fan (Branson, MO)
This is one sweet bike! I got it for my daughter, a college student, so she could ride around campus for exercise. It's light to me but a bit heavy for her. She still can get it in and out of her car okay. She loves it. It folds/unfolds quickly with a little practice and is just darned cute. The fit and finish are excellent. The box arrived a bit crumpled from shipping but the bike itself was padded and secured in all the right places and emerged pristine and required only minor tuning and some more air in the tires. I'd recommend this little wonder to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great bike, great price, March 9, 2009
By ConsciousConsumer (The Republic of Texas)
I am a college student and desperately wanted a folding bike that would fit in my little car and would comfortably take me around campus. Of course my budget could not afford a Dahon (which is a fine bike!) so I opted for the Schwinn... I love it! I've had it for months now and I ride it every day around campus, it makes my life so much easier! It does not ride like a toy (ok, it is a little heavier than the more expensive Dahons and Boardwalks, but therefore is also very sturdy) and fits perfectly in my trunk (I own an old corolla). Cool kids kinda laugh at me when they see me pull up behind my car on my folding bike, but as soon as I fold it, lift it and pull it in my trunk, all in under 3 mins, they looked amazed and several people had already asked me where they can get their own (I still don't understand how someone needs 10 mins to fold/unfold this bike!! I do it under snow and in my office clothes hehehehe).

If you have a modest budget this is the bike to go. Might need some adjustment at the bike shop, but the bike is just too much fun to ride :)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good investment, May 3, 2010
By EYW (New York)
I wanted a foldaway bike because, a) I live in a small apartment and did not want to give up more storage space than necessary, and b) I didn't want to install a bike rack on my car coz i did that with my previous car and it left ALOT of scratches (on the car)...

This is a fantastic bike. It takes appx. 2 minutes to fold/unfold. It easily fits in the trunk of my car. and it's not heavy for putting in/taking out of the trunk. If you wanted to carry it with you on a train for your commute, then it might be too heavy.

I can't comment on the bag coz i've never used it.

Also, the bike is a bit slow...probably because of the 20" wheel...I did 9 miles and it took me about an hour..and I was peddlng all the way.

Also, the built in rack is GREAT. I intalled a milk crate secured by 4 U-bolts and i put my 20lb dog inside and we are CRUISING...against the wind....WOOHOO..

Also ( amazon is not gonna like this) but I purchased mine from Costco @ 199 and the package arrived in the MOST PERFECT condition, very well wrapped with cushion inside. It was ready to go right out of the box.

Also, some guy did a very nice review on youtube on thsi exact same ..just search schwinn loop.

So get it, dont' hesitate.

...and yes, you will get alot of compliments on the bike...

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid construction and a great deal!, December 19, 2009
By Jax_0r_Better (LONG BEACH, NY, US)
I did a lot of research and looked at various bikes being offered. I read the reviews, compared the construction, the total weight of other bikes and decided on the Loop. I live near the ocean and salt water is very caustic on steel frames. The rust will eat through the paint within a year. I wanted a bike made with an alloy frame, alloy spokes and alloy rims. As compared to others on the market, the Loop weighs 32 lbs, is made of alloy and has a solid frame on the rear for me to place a basket. I wanted a bike where I could run errands at the supermarket or carry some extra items to the beach. My budget was limited and I was willing to spend up to $300 for a folding bike. I saw this great sale from Amazon ($178.85) and ordered the bike on Friday December 18, before 11:00 AM. I'm not in a rush to get the item, so I took advantage of the free shipping (Super Saver). Plus they said it would not be delivered till after December 23rd. It's Saturday, December 19 and the bike arrived at 10:30 AM. I was in complete shock. Free delivery and one day service is phenomenal, but rare! Be aware that the box it came in is not designed to be shipped via FedEx. It's a conventional store box with no extra materials inside to protect the bike. There was minor damage to the box on the outside, but there was no damgage to the bike on the inside. Everything was in pristine condition. Installation was easy and I filled the tires with air. I live in the Northeast and it's cold out today, but I had a to take the bike out for a spin. Wow, what a great ride. The brakes needed a little adjustment to loosen them up a little, but that was easy to do. I took it down to the board walk and shifted the gears to ride uphill with ease. This is alot of fun to ride. I'm glad I got the 20 inch wheels as compared to the 16 inch wheels on other bikes. I'm 5'9" and weight aproximately 180 lbs. For my height and weight, I'm impressed on how solid the frame construction is and it's styling. Yes the fenders are plastic, but it's thick and well made. For what I paid, it's perfect. It's Schwinn quality and I am very pleased. It started to get windy out and I rode it back freezing my face off, but it was fun and a delight to ride. I folded it up with ease and walked it back upstairs to my apartment. This was a great deal and I am very pleased with my purchase. Thanks Amazon for making my day! See you on the beach!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  over 50 WF, June 27, 2009
By on the go (Falls Church, Va usa)
This is a great little bike. I ride it to the gym about five times a week. Not far, but it does the job. I think the price is fair given what it offers. 7 speeds are just perfect. Easy to fold and I really like the frame construction. Easy for us females to get on and off. People are always asking me about it. I think Schwinn should be proud of this. Weighs about 28 lbs. Did need some gear adjustments when it arrived. And the cardboard box it's packed in is really scary. I couldn't believe it would be in one piece when I saw the condition of the box on my front doorstep. I find the 20" wheels easier to balance on than other folding bikes with smaller wheels. Nice!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  schwinn loop 7-speed folding bike, June 15, 2008
By william japhet (olympia wash)
My perchase of a schwinn loop 7-speed folding bike was somewhat dissappointing. When i unpacked my purchase the rear carrier had a large spot on it where the paint was rubbed off. The packageing was verry short on proper padding,I don't believe the shipper was at fault as the box looked pretty good.I called the only phone number that i could find on my paper work to ask if i could perchase some touch up paint and was told that they could not do that,And to go to a hobby shop and try to find the paint that i needed. I could not find the proper color that would match so now i have a new bike that looks damaged.. camelw@comcast.net

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Fun, for a week..., July 29, 2010
By 27 year old former gamer who loves old school...
I discovered this bike here on amazon, read all the reviews and saw the video on youtube (which was VERY helpful, check it out), and bought it.

First of all, I love riding this bike! I even find the seat comfortable! It folds very easily, isn't too heavy, and it even looks cool! It's only $200! Why am I giving it only 2 stars if I love this bike so much?

Problem #1: If you let the front wheel rotate 180 degrees clockwise, there's a part of the wheel that will rub up against the brake line. This becomes a problem if the bike falls and the wheel rotates that way. I put the kickstand out, let the bike stand freely, it fell over, and the rubber on the brake line got ripped up. The brakes still work but I had to readjust them. I don't use the kick stand anymore because I went through the same thing 4 days later.

Problem #2: After a week of riding the bike everyday for about an hour, the thread on the right crank got so worn that the pedal won't screw into it making the bike useless (temporarily). I suppose I could use some sort of epoxy to glue it in but I think I'm just going to replace the whole crank system. I find it amazing that schwinn uses parts that are so cheap they wear out in a week of moderate use.

I held off in writing this review and am glad I did, if I wrote it a few days ago this bike would have gotten a 5 easily; this is a fun bike that is very easy to transport. Unfortunately, due to a design flaw and defective parts, I have to give this a 2. I think schwinn has a great idea here but it has been executed very poorly.

Bottom line: for $200 I got week's worth of enjoyment. I'm probably going to put in a new crankset but am very nervous about what else is going to go wrong with this bike and how much this bike is going to end up costing in the end.

(added later. The crankset is 165mm, anything larger won't work. I contacted the company I bought the bike from and they say they can send a replacement. None of the local places where I live sell cranksets under 170mm so I'll have to order one if I'm going to upgrade.)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Schwinn Loop. Good value. Some sticking points., January 10, 2010
By Jon Gerow (Hainesville, IL USA)
It's a good bike for the money, but you get what you pay for. The frame is aluminum alloy, fork is steel, aluminum rims, aluminum brake levers. Not the best quality stuff and certainly not light: Steel hubs, steel seat post, steel stem/handlebar, steel brakes cheap three piece cranks and plastic pedals. Seat is uncomfortable, but easily replaced with virtually any seat. Low end Shimano derailleur, but at least it's Shimano. SRAM Grip Shift works well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  GET THIS BIKE!, April 15, 2010
By jeleebeen (New York, NY)
I usually never write reviews, but I wanted to address some of things written by other customers here. First, the bike is not heavy. Some people make it seem like the bike can only be lifted by a weight lifter, but I am a tiny muscle-less 115lb girl, and I can lift the bike fine. Second, my bike came in a perfect condition and I didn't need to take it to a bike shop at all. That may vary according to where you live and how lucky you are, but I don't think that should deter you at all from purchasing this bike.

The folding of the bike takes maybe three seconds, as does the unfolding. It's really easy to store it in small places, like under a bed in my case. The seats go up high enough to be comfortable for my boyfriend who is extremely long leg-ed and 6'4''. It also goes short enough to accommodate an extremely short leg-ed 5'2'' person (me). The only major drawback I found in the bike is that the seat is very uncomfortable. It hurt to sit on the seat after a day of briefly riding, so I replaced it with a seat that is wider with more cushion and shock absorption.
The rack is also pretty useful, but I found that it is a little too slippery. My stuff kept slipping off even after tying them with a bungee cord.

With all this said, I can honestly say that I love this bike. I ride my bike in NYC, so before purchasing this bike I was a little worried about the safety, but so far (knock on wood) it has proved to be very sturdy. I also get many looks from bikers and non-bikers alike, and it makes me feel proud when I ride it around. It also doesn't hurt that this bike is better looking than all the bikes I've seen around. :) BUY THIS BIKE!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  We like these little loops!, February 25, 2009
By Ron The Mon (Cooperstown, NY)
We needed some compact bikes to take on vacation, and these fit the bill. Our bikes arrived in perfect condition and were unpacked and set up in about 1/2 hour. Yhe finish and construction is excellent, and they are a great value for the money. The locks on the chassiis and handlebars are sturdy, and the bikes ride very well for the size. The only possible drawback is that the height of the handlebars is not easily adjustable, but they work for us, two average size adults.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  schwinn loop folding bike, June 8, 2008
By bubbles (san francisco)
This bike is convenient and easy to use. Amazon sent the bike pretty fast, but it had minor damages such as scratches and on one of the rubber bar handle was ripped. Overall, the bike is great! It's easy to put in the car, stored it in small spaces, and get you to where you want to go.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty darn nice, August 10, 2010
By D. Foster (Clarkston, MI USA)
Most of the other reviews on here are right on the $$ about this bike. A great bike for the money, but remember how little you spent in comparison.

I purchased 2 of these from Amazon (for my wife and I). Both bikes arrived in excellent condition in the box Schwinn ships it from China in. It is very enjoyable to ride once you make one change & one adjustment (and fill up the tires with air - they were at about 15psi out of the box).

- The seat it comes with is horrible (unless you are really into pain). I suggest replacing it with Amazon item #SW74163 (Schwinn Pillow Top Cruiser seat). That seat is excellent and made a great improvement.

- Adjust the dérailleur. BOTH bikes arrived with adjustments needed. Neither bike would go into first gear, and would fall off the sprocket when seventh gear was selected. And it was a PAIN adjusting it. But it can be done. Once completed, it shifted fabulously.

Overall - highly recommended for the $$.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  good budget bike, July 31, 2010
By bikecommuter1122
This bike is good if you're on a budget and really want a folder. A few small annoyances: There's no clamp to keep the bike in its fully folded position and there's just no intuitive way to pick it up. It's unwieldy and flaps open so I use bungees. The handlebar stem jiggles at the clamp point and when riding over rougher terrain and bumpy asphalt the vibration eventually knocks the clamp out of it's locked position - haven't had an incident yet but I could easily imagine a situation where this could be dangerous - the guy at my bike shop is making a little shim to stabilize it - hopefully this helps. Not a day goes by without several people stopping me to comment on it or ask how much I paid for it so be prepared to stop often and answer questions...it's kind of like having a rare-breed pet. Pluses are the 550mm seat stem - most are around 440mm so this is great as I'm 6'-0" tall. Ergonomically speaking all fixed components work for my large body frame so it's generally comfortable - especially after I replaced the seat ( too hard!!). I got it as a commuter bike but folding it is such a hassle that I just keep it open on the subway - it's compact enough that I don't feel like I'm crowding anyone. Riding in super-heavy NYC street traffic feels good on it too - the 20" wheel and compact frame give me a strong sense of control and I'm always in tune with my relationship to other vehicles and pedestrians.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not a durable bike, October 31, 2010
By Nathan
I purchased this bike in mid-September and have ridden it back-and-forth to work maybe 10 times (a 7.5 mile commute, roundtrip) in NYC. By late October...the back wheel has bent; and the back brakes rubbed against the tire (unbeknown to me), causing perforations in the tire and a ruptured tube. I realize that I'm a bit hard on bikes, weighing roughly 230 lbs. and riding on choppy city streets. That said, I expected the bike to last much longer than it did.

This may be a good bike for smaller people, short rides, and over very smooth terrain.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  can not give higher rating, September 2, 2010
By Joke Lover
I bought this bike couple of days ago, and it arrived today and I can not wait to write this review. I normally give good reviews on product i bouhgt if the product did meet my expectation. This one is somewhat below mine. First, the good part: it is a folding bike, seems sturdy, very nicely painted, easy to unfold and have not tried to fold it yet. Now, the main reasons i would not give higher rating are the following and i hope the manufacturer can refer to this and make some improvements. 1. poor instruction, I have been in Engineering field for near 20 years, instuctions should make customer very easy to follow instead of guessing. 2. The brake was preinstalled, but did not follow the spec listed in the instrucation sheet. I can tell the assembly process is not well managed. 3. Have said that, i am forced to adjust the gap of the shoe and tire rim. I just cannot adjust the left front brake shoe, it does not have enough gap and hence always touch the rim, you can imagine the ride is not going to be that smooth.
Believe me, I tried adjust the cable as well as the position of the shoe, it just doesn't have enough freedom to satisfy the gap requirement. 4. Pedal is not good. You can feel the stiff and friction when it rotates. with 3 and 4, I donot have a smooth ride as others might have. 5. This is a 20in folding bike, not a kids bike, can not be used as kids bike even though it is 2oinch. The front hold just too tall for kids to grib, so don't even try because it can not be adjusted lower. Hope this information is useful for future buyer, I may return this one and get a better one, but not sure how to return this.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Take It To A Pro For Set-UP, June 22, 2009
By Steven Rossellini (Twin Cities, MN)
I was prepared to love this bike. Right now, I kind of like it. It is much heavier than you might think; heavier than my Trek 21 speed. The chain guard and fenders are plastic. It comes with a case, but you'd have to be an Olympic weight lifter to transfer the folded bike into the case. My gearing system needed a major adjustment when I received the bike. The manual says the bike is ready-to-ride immediately. It's not. The customer service people at Schwinn.com told me emphatically, by phone, that, in shipping, many bikes' derailleurs get out of adjustment. They directed me to an on-line, 100 page PDF manual that supposedly would instruct me on how to adjust the derailleur on the Loop. It does not. The bicycle mechanic, to whom I ultimately brought the Loop, pointed out a tear in the seat, and that the bracket that fits over the derailleur was bent. For my time, extra money, and frustration, I think I have what may be a very functional folding bike. The bicycle mechanic is a person I trust. The shop, though charging for repair services, trains young bicycle mechanics as its main focus. When he said that adjusting the derailleurs on this Schwinn Loop took a trained professional, I knew I was getting the straight scoop.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  It's a great little city bike, December 9, 2010
By man_rob (Baltimore, MD, USA)
I'm not a cycling expert or purist, but I love this bike. I bought it because I have spiral stair cases, and could not get a standard bike in and out of my basement. I'm 6'4", and can ride it with ease. I'm sure it doesn't have the latest, top of the line components, (Not that I could tell you what is the latest or top of the line bike parts) but it work wells for my modest demands. When I ride it around town, it's distinctive look turns heads. People ask me where I got it. Schwinn has changed the frame a bit from the one pictured above. (See the Schwinn website) The new design is a bit less "loop" like. It appears accommodate a longer seat pole, to raise the seat higher, and it allows the seat to be put in a lower position when folding the bike. I think it also might have a slightly larger cargo rack then the old design. I love the sturdy integrated rack, by the way. Pop a bag, or milk crate on it, and you've got a great little hauler. If you want a bike that could win the Tour de France, look elsewhere. If your goal is to get around town, or school, then this might be the the right bike for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great value, fun to ride, November 15, 2009
By Cheatem And Howe (Hopewell, NJ)
I bought this thing for use on business trips. I didn't want to do the car carrier thing, and I am willing to ride something less substantial than my mountain bike when away from home.

This thing is a hoot, and I feel that it is a great value for the price. Yes, the welds are big and ugly, but the rest of the finish is pretty nice. No, it doesn't ride with the same stability as a full size bike, and is a little skitterish on gravel. Yes, it's lighter than what some other reviewers implied, a couple pounds lighter than my MB. Yes, it folds very easily, certainly in less than a minute. I like the huge rack, very innovative design.

And - my 11 yo son wouldn't give it back...

The fact that the partner shipping this unit had a special coupon for free shipping was gravy. I like this bike a lot.

My little grandson hit my bike and it fell over
and turn the front wheel around
I forced it back and broke brake and something out of the fork

the fork was not under warranty due to ordering on

nice for my money
Fixed it right away
All and all I am still pleased
Riding it almost everyday
For a beginner great and easy ride
Love the adjustable seat

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I Love this bike!, July 15, 2010
By boo (USA)
I bought this about a little over a month ago and I've ridden it a solid amount of time. It's my first folding bike.

First of all, this bike shouldn't take you more than a minute or two to fold up. When I first got it, it took me a few minutes longer (probably 5 minutes) but once you get the hang of it (after just a few folds) it's easy. The bike actually weighs about thirty pounds if I'm not mistaken. You can decide for yourself if that's too heavy to carry.

The bike rides great. It doesn't feel like a toy, which, after reading other reviews, I guess is more likely to occur with folding bikes. I'm 5 feet 11 inches and 140 pound and I can fit the bike fine. Just adjust the seat and you probably will be, too.

The one problem with it is that the folding knobs gradually loosen over time. It's easy to fix; all you need to do is twist them with your fingers, no tools necessary. So just check them before you go riding. But like I said, it's gradual. You'll probably notice it before its a real big issue, and you can adjust it before it becomes a problem.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  cheap decent bike, November 30, 2009
By pineapple
pros: -rides very smoothhhh! quality is like dahon's
-cute design!
cons: -hard to unfold the middle of the body, i have to kick the lock thing really hard for it to unfold,im afraid i might break the lock in the future
-very heavy for a 110lbs girl like me, i dont think i could carry it around in a train station anymore, the included bag might help but the bag is just too embarrassing to carry, its super huge!
-very hard saddle, my behind is all sore everytime i sit on it. had to buy a better seat

overall i think the design and its folding capability are something to boast :D i got many looks because of it :D

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pretty darn nice, August 11, 2010
By D. Foster (Clarkston, MI USA)
Most of the other reviews on here are right on the $$ about this bike. A great bike for the money, but remember how little you spent in comparison.

I purchased 2 of these from forCycling (for my wife and I). Both bikes arrived in excellent condition in the box Schwinn ships it from China in. It is very enjoyable to ride once you make one change & one adjustment (and fill up the tires with air - they were at about 15psi out of the box).

- The seat it comes with is horrible (unless you are really into pain). I suggest replacing it with forCycling item #SW74163 (Schwinn Pillow Top Cruiser seat).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  great commuter bike for dense urban area, March 15, 2011
By librarian (brooklyn, ny USA)
I'm a big fan of Schwinns (my regular ten-speeds have all been Schwinns) so I was excited to see they have a folding option. I agree that rather than what most people think of as a folding bike this is more 'a bike that folds' but for me this is a feature and not a bug. The Loop is super-sturdy compared to the Dahon (which also costs twice as much) or Citizen bikes, and the solid construction is very comforting. That does make for a much heavier bike, and aside from lifting it over subway gates or into that back of a cab, I've not travelled with it too much. To be fair - my Schwinn ten-speeds have all been heavy/sturdy as well and that's kind of what I prefer (as opposed to feather-light fixies).

Where the folding comes in handy for me is 1) it doesn't take up any room in my tiny Brooklyn apartment and can easily be tucked in a corner, and 2) I can bring it up to my cubicle at work and fold it under my desk instead of leaving it locked outside in midtown. The knobby tires handle NYC potholes admirably and the built-in cargo rack on the back is just begging to bear groceries. For me, it's nice to have a second bike with a little more of an upright posture than a ten-speed allows.

I tend to use the Loop for short trips around my Brooklyn neighborhood, and rely on my ten-speed for longer/faster trips. The Loop seems to be geared down and its hard to get up a good head of steam. The brakes are excellent on the Loop! Mine definitely needed a professional adjustment after shipping - and the derailer on the Loop 7 is especially prone to damage. But for the price, the Loop is a fantastic bike. It's the perfect second bike for the hardcore commuter. I love mine and when my seat got stolen and I couldn't ride it for a while, I was heartbroken!

PROS: inexpensive, sturdy, safe, folds, good-looking
CONS: heavy, needs adjustment, not fast, parts a bitch to replace

1.0 out of 5 stars.  This bike sucks, September 23, 2011
By Forkids24
Well I just received this bike today and I am starting to regret purchasing the bike. Lets start with the pros of the bike
1 - it folds
2 - it's different
now the cons
1 - when the bike is folded there is no magnet or anything to hold the 2 wheels together like the dahon folding bikes, the handle bar always flies out when you pick up the bike. Well my bike came with the handlebars flipped in between the bikes, but the instructions shows that the handlebars should be located on the outside of the bike. Which confuses me.
2- It is 40 ish pounds, I am a strong person and I do not mind the bike being heavier, but women should not purchase this bike if they expect to carry it around.
3 - I purchased the bike thinking I can carry it around while going to the grocery store, instead of locking it up outside, well the problem is you can not carry it. The brompton bikes you can roll with you, the Dahons you can carry it because the wheels lock together. It is not the weight it is the fact it is so akward holding it around, the 2 wheels dont lock, the handle bars dont stay put.
4 - the bike seat hurts my ass
5 - the seat post actually came too loose, as I was sitting down the seat will fly down, and I only weigh 170 pounds.
6 - The instructions was horrible, they do not show or tell you much, you would just have to assume most of it.
7 - It is not worth 215 dollars.
8- The gear shifting is horrible, it's hard to turn to gear 1
9 - It is only available in 2 ugly colors

I am not sure if I will be returning this product, but I know for sure that you might as well be spending 80 dollars on a walmart bike because this bike folds but not portable.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Best value on low end folding bike out there, August 18, 2011
By Jason Ensminger (Danville, VA)
AS ADVERTISED. No trauma to bike but box a little dinged. Of note, stupid to have 1 folding pedal instead of both. Get bungy cords for when folded because bag is useless. My seat tube had manufacturing schmootz which prevented seat from dropping completely which bike shop will ream out for me. 1st and 7th gear wouldn't engage and brakes needed to be adjusted out of box. Wife got a Citizen Gotham for $100 more and hers needed same adjustments so both are at bike shop now. Other than tune up, this bike folds as small as hers, has rack built in(she had to pay extra $25) and only weighs 2-3 pounds more. No brainer if you ask me. Besides, it's shiny and red! 4 stars because of schmootz but nothing else.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  It's not as good as I thought it would be, August 24, 2010
By Poipoi
I did some research and saw that this was the one of the cheapest and best folding bikes out there. When I got it, it was all assembled and took no time to take it out.
However, the handlebars kept turning and it does take some effort to pedal. When I ride it, it's hard not to swerve around. The gears can be a little clicky too. I also had some bike mechanic friends try to fix issues with the handlebars and breaks to little avail.
I tried a more expensive folding bike at a bike shop which I think rode a lot better. I believe it was a $350 Dahon but then again, that's almost twice as much. It really depends how much you think you will ride it. If you are going to ride a lot, get a real bike or a better quality folding one.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  So far, so good :), August 4, 2010
By Jason Oberc (New Jersey)
I've had the Schwinn loop now for 2 weeks and really love it. I take it on the public train system in NJ(NJTransit)with no problems. Can fold it up in about 30 seconds. However, it is heavy. Ok for a guy or girl in good shape. But a weak girl will have issues for sure.

Like most bikes the original seat is too small to be comfortable, so I put on a big cruiser seat for a comfortable ride.

I just ordered buddy pegs to put on.

PS youtube has a great review of this bike, just search schwinn loop. Also, sorry Amazon, got mine from BJ's website and it came promptly, free shipping and fully assembled, after reading a reviewer was happy with the service. Amazon I'm sure will do the same, just my 2 cents.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Starting Folding Bike, July 26, 2010
By NYC (New York)
Bought this bike from babyage couple of weeks back and received it in time. The bike is good and feels sturdy (bit on the heavier side). Also, the bike rides decently well except that you have to initially get used to it. It does feel a little unstable in the begining, especially the front handle. Pretty much you get used to riding it over time. I would have given it a higher rating of 4 if not for the unstable handle and bit of extra effort it takes to fold the bike. Also there is nothing that holds the bike together once you fold it and if you are not carefule, you may end up crushing your fingers...

But if you are looking for a budget starter folding bike with gears, I don't think there is anything else out there that comes close. The Dahon Mariner with gears starts at 460...

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Decent Bike, July 15, 2011
By Tomas M Capolongo
It's been a while since I have ridden a bike.
I was originally going to get a full size bike. But decided to get a folding bike, since I drive an 18Wheeler, and did not want to store it behind my cab.
Just got this bike yesterday, but I got home today, set it up and went for a quick ride 3 miles lol. I like it alot it does seem like I can't get the handlebars tight enough where they won't wobble.
The back wheel also has a slight wobble to it, seems like it's not quite 100% round.
The brakes and gears needed some adjustments nothing major just a phillips.
I am not sure why some folks seem to be having trouble folding this bike. Works just fine for me. Can't seem to get it in the bag either not sure why, lol.
Could use a better seat.
It's a little pricey, compared to a standard bike, but if someone was wanting at a standard bike they wouldn't be looking at this one.

About the bike being to heavy, I suppose it would be kind of heavy to carry for an extended period of time.
But that's why it's a bike I don't foresee any problems lifting it in and out of my truck. (Semi Truck)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Where's the other pedal?, May 28, 2011
By bosswiththehotsauce
The box arrived in great condition unlike other reviews. After unpacking the box I found the bike had only one pedal. The other pedal must still be in China. I immediately went to my local bike shop where I got two new pedals and a tuneup/adjustment for twenty-seven dollars. They found the back wheel slightly damaged from shipment and were unable to true it. They said to ride it like it was and it probably would not be noticeable. I have been riding it and all said it is a great bike. EXPECT to take it to the bike shop immediately to fix problems (especially gears and brakes) before riding it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very good folding bike., October 4, 2010
By Mike G. (New York, NY USA)
This Schwinn folding bike is a quality bike. For those who want to carry a bike like an attache case, you want a super expensive bike the is light enough to carry around. This Schwinn is a great bike to throw in your car trunk and take to a park, etc., to ride safely -- off the streets. It's a bit heavy, but solid, and can take the bumps in the city and parks. I had to bring it to a bike dealer to have the breaks adjusted, but other than that everything about the bike has been good. I definitely recommend this bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Not your father's Schwinn, November 14, 2011
By Comorant
I purchased a couple of these accessorize my motor home. I thought by buying a folding bike that I could store them out of the weather in a much smaller space when not traveling, unfortunately the design is not quite as expected.
Although the bike appears to be well made, it's not the quality I would have expected from a product with the Schwinn name. The bike is made in China which in itself speaks volumes regarding quality, especially the paint job. Upon arrival, with no damage to the packaging, it already had numerous scratches. It has a micro thin layer of paint that was obviously not baked on as anything harder than a fingernail will leave a scratch. Regarding the concept of folding and storing in a small space, forget the included storage bag. In addition to being almost impossible to get the bike in the bag, it is impossible to do so without ripping holes in the thin material. The zippers were of such poor quality that the handles of both zippers broke off even before attempting to zip up the bags.
On the positive side, the bike itself is of sound mechanical quality. Both assembled easily and rode well without any adjustments. The bike is very sturdy and should last a long time if not exposed to the elements, it's just always going to be scratched easily and lack of a decent storage bag will make it less than portable as advertised. Overall I'm pleased with the bike mechanically. The little things such as paint and storage are simply chalked as Schwinn cutting corners by having this bike made in China and not maintaining the fine reputation for quality that has always been associated with a Schwinn bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best Folding Bike ever!, September 14, 2010
By Pearly-Gater (A La Mer)
Popped it out of the box, which arrived on the day promised, followed assembly instructions, and jumped on for a smooth and easy ride around the countryside and town.
Best brakes on any bike - better adjusted than the Dahons - right out of the box. Cute Red Loop. Everybody smiles when we ride by. We're smiling too.
Me and my dog, who runs alongside.

Only negative - the heaviness of the built-on rack, which being part of the frame, can not be removed.
Sure is sturdy.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good choice, August 30, 2010
By Raul
If you are looking for a cheap still good quality bike, this one is a pretty good option. It folds and unfold easily and it's perfect to use if you commute. I have taken with me at the commuter train and I have had no problem. Some minor comments, the frame is different from the one that is shown in the photo, it is straight below the seat, without that nice curve; the bag which is included in the purchase of this item is useful, but is seems that could tear apart in any moment.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice little bike!, September 20, 2010
By gofy (Queens, NY)
I first purchase with an on-line contractor of forCycling called ""Innovation sport"" and they totally messed my order, and delay me order for almost 4 months. After screaming and complaining to forCycling they deliver my bike within 3 days with proper price adjustment. I like this bike, but it may not be as easy to fold into the bag as you expected (consider myself a 5'3 little person). I wish this bike will come with something to tight up/ stable the bike together after unfolding it. The middle hinge will need a lift for unfold and that took me a while to figure out coz the instruction wasn't so clear. Since the bike is ""out of box"" product additional tone-up in the local bike shop is almost necessary and that may cost you average $50+. My bike comes out off-headed and need to be adjust. Besides that everything works very and I have a very good time cursing it around my neighborhood.

Schwinn Loop 7 bike is good quality and easy to unfold and use. The carrying bag is crap and the zipper broke the second time I used the cover. Contacted Schwinn and they want $20 to replace it. So much for standing behind their stuff. If you purchase, don't expect much service out the bag!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Pedal, pedal, pedal, pedal......., March 10, 2012

I like my bike. It is a lot of pedaling though.
20inch tires and you pedal a lot to get anywhere.

If you are not a seasoned biker, your legs will feel like jello as you get them in condition to ride this.

It is also quite heavy.

When I first got mine and unboxed it.....the heavy steel handlebar smashed my pinky finger as it swung down while I was trying to figure it out. Ouch! (thank you ice water....the bruise went away after a week and all turned out okay).

I prefer riding it short distances and not having to unfold it but it is a good intro to folders.

Nice bike. Has all the features regular bikes have and folds into a small package to go in it's own bag
Great for vacations. Throw it in the trunk of your car and see the sites
Sets up fast too
Over all pretty decent bike
