5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for Spare Tires!, October 16, 2008
By D. Thomas (Earth)
Bought it to lock up my under-truck spare, as my last one was stolen in broad daylight. Has enough length to loop around tire winch frame under my 4Runner and safely lock through the wheel without leaving a bunch of extra slack hanging down. The cover over the lock cylinder is perfect for this application. Keeps it clean when I'm offroad. Chain is very heavy; weighs in at about 8 lbs. All hardened square links so it should be very hard for someone to cut through.

It's tough to find good chain locks under $50, but I think this one is pretty solid. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another for my $1400 mountain bike or motorcycle.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Functional, but needs improvements, December 2, 2010
By UJam
I purchased this lock to replace a 1/2" braided cable lock that I prevented a thief from cutting through. While a little on the heavy side, the chain is secure and easier to wrap on the bike than those stiff cable locks.

The only issue I have has to do with Masterlock forcing me to use the key to lock the chain. I have a similar lock to this one from a different manufacture and it is a simple snap to lock, rather than key to lock. I imagine it's part of their "anti pick tech", but having to use my keys when the lock is awkwardly positioned on a post can be aggravating. When you're trying to hold the lock closed with one hand, the key is in the other and the bike or chain length isn't cooperating it's just a hassle.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  3-Foot Chain Hock, October 12, 2011
By A casual stroll through t.. (Amsterdam, Holland)
This is heavier than a fat, dead hen I have. I use it to lock up a rusted chicken coop where I hide my "famed" golden eggs that I compete with in farmer's markets. If you use it for biking, it's too heavy to lug around. Trust me, I used to carry 3 of these on my back and one on my head.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A lot of lock for the money., March 4, 2011
By N. Manning (Dallas, TX)
The first thing you should know about this chain/lock is that it is huge. I'm not sure what my expectation was but this thing is big, and it's heavy. Now, this is a great thing for locking up your bike or what have you but it's not so great for portability.

It is a very well made lock, and I was very impressed with the fit and finish. The operation of the lock is a little fiddly, but not overly so unless you have the key on a keychain with a lot of other keys. It feels very secure and I think that it would definitely deter all but the most determined of thieves.

Overall, I'm pleased with the lock, I was just genuinely shocked at how big it was the price threw me off the trail too because this really is a solid piece of equipment for the money. Ideal (and I think designed for) motorcycles, and larger items (maybe an expensive grill) I have 100% confidence in this lock's ability to protect anything you use it for.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  A struggle, April 13, 2011
By HeyBrew
A Struggle! To lock the bike - to unlock the bike.. even when i'm sitting on my couch - it's hard to lock and unlock. I am a recreational rider - i like to ride to the bar - and leave my bike there. When we are moving on - I have had to sit down on the ground to TRY and get my bike unlocked. The inside is now a bit rusty - this is probably b/c i leave it outside in the rain when I can't bike home - BUT still i do not think this has anything to do with how badly the lock/unlock works. BUT i will give the lock 2 stars - b/c my bike has yet to be stolen with it (knock on wood).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  excellent chain lock for a bike in Brooklyn, December 29, 2011
By Bobbie Lee (DC)
this is an excellent product. not too expensive, and when paired with two cheap u-locks, it provides good security in Brooklyn. I would not use this chain lock by itself in my neighborhood as I don't think it is tough enough, but if you use it in conjunction with a good u-lock (in my case I use two U-Locks), most bad guys will stay away. bike has been secure since I started using the chain lock (in conjunction with u-locks) 6 months ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Really strong!, July 17, 2011
By Dempsy Winans (Arlington, TX USA)
I am using this on the main gate leading into our farm. It is our first line of defense and it is a good one. The sturdy nylon covering keeps it from scratching the finish off our gate and post which is a real plus for us since we have a wrought iron gate on the entry and it has a nice, powder coat paint job. The chain itself is very heavy, heat-treated metal and the lock is a high security device that looks like it ought to do the job.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Vey strong i feel so secure!!!!!!!, April 19, 2011
By J. S. Quinteros
this chain is very strong i fell like no one will steel my bike, is a good looking chain and the lock is very friendly and easy to use. the only down thing i found is that is a little heavy but in exchange you get all the security in the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  pretty heavy duty, good for locking a bike, September 23, 2010
By nada (New York New York)
This is a very nice, pretty heavy duty lock. I use it to park my bike in NYC and "trust" in it to keep my back in place when I leave it alone. It's got a nice weight to it so I am sure the links are strong.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  So Heavy!, March 11, 2011
By Tiffany Olster (North Hollywood, CA)
I'm sure it's very secure, but if I'd known how heavy it was I wouldn't have purchased it. I don't want this extra weight when biking, especially if I'm going to be adding cargo such as groceries.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A VERY STRONG LOCK, March 31, 2012
By Robert D. Williams (Bensenville, Il)
I received my Masterlock tuff links chain and lock today. It is much beefier and stronger than I had imagined but not too heavy to carry with me on either my motorcycle or bicycle. I had been using a fairly thick 5 mm cable lock for the last 10 years. I have been lucky and have not gotten ripped off but after reading all the horror stories written by Amazon reviewers, I no longer felt safe with it. The tuff links chain is 10 times as strong as my old cable lock and I now will feel extremely safe with it on my bikes. I know there are larger and heavier Krytonite chains out on the market, but they are so heavy I wouldn't want to carry one around on rides. Unless you live in a high crime locality, I think they are overkill. I am most pleased with my Masterlock tuff links lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This lock means business, March 19, 2012
By Sam
I love this lock. I'm going to be using it for my bike and I'm very confident that this will hold up. I love the locking mechanism, and the whole thing seems very solid(no cheap, plastic locks here!). Keep in mind this chain is VERY heavy(not that that's necessarily a bad thing). It weighed in at four pounds seven ounces.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Eh, March 26, 2012
By andylaiphoto
Not very long, the lock doesn't seem too heavy duty, and that's about it. Not the best lock out there but even for the money it's not that great.
