5.0 out of 5 stars.  Become your own Mechanic, April 6, 2008
By T. Hornik (Central Texas)
If you are going to get serious about using your bike to commute to and from work or doing those long rides on the weekends, then you might just want to begin doing your own maintenance. I purchased this tool set 2 weeks ago and with the help of Park Tool's online repair help, I overhauled both of my bikes. This tool set contains about everything you need, only items missing are some tools required for vintage parts (pre 90's). Save yourself the hassle and expense of going to the LBS because you do not have the tools required to strip any part off of your frame.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  The genuine and the clones, October 21, 2007
By Pork Chop (Lisbon, Portugal)
The AK-37 is the genuine article, from Park, at $250 USD or more ...however,
I decided to go for the cloned tool box, from Sette Torx, model ST-32,
for half that price.

The only difference, I can see, is the lack of lube bottle, lube
toothpaste-style tube, the 3 screwdrivers which the Torx tool box lacks,
and 3 or 4 more tools that Torx contains which Park doesn't, some
of which are very useful, only found on the higher end Park Tool Box, PK-63.

Overall, a great value for those who know better than to let a bicycle
"rot unmaintained" for years on end, but prefer to examine all components
multiple times a year, and apply the maintenance required for optimal
performance.

For parts, obviously there are online stores that will sell you the
needed crank, derailleurs, cassette, bottom brackets, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good tool set, includes some items you don't need from a tool kit, April 13, 2009
By Greg V. (Minnesota, USA)
I started working on my bike a few years ago and picked up a small, cheaper, set of tools at Nashbar. Later, I took an overhaul and wheel building classes at my LBS. They had Park Tools, and I just liked them better. Some were easier to use (e.g., chain tool) and some I would actually use. I wouldn't even touch my bike with the spoke wrench that came with the Nashbar kit. This kit was also missing some of what I wanted. So, I bought this kit, and supplemented with some additional, individually purchased tools (e.g., fourth hand, truing stand). The kit comes with some standard, non-bike, tools that you might not need (screwdrivers, wrenches, and my least favorite, star allen wrenches). I didn't have any decent tools anyway - so I appreciated the regular tools as well. If you have these, additional ones might not improve your life much. It also comes with some items I'd rather go without as "tools" as I already had these items (e.g., lube, grease, patch kits, chain cleaner) - but I suppose they'll get used eventually...hopefully not the patch kit. With these tools, I've been able to work on my bikes, old (80s) and new - overhauling hubs, changing cassettes, overhauling headsets, installing new parts, tuning up, etc. The only problem I've had is when I encountered old freewheels that need some specialized tool to remove. I opted to replace the wheels with something more modern, but they weren't worth saving anyway. Overall, I am happy with the set. They are a bit pricey, but I know I've more than made the money back by maintaining my own bikes, fixing up my own, now nice, $25 commuting bike with used parts, etc.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Pairing high quality tools with low quality tools at this price!?, January 2, 2011
By Internet Person (RVA)
It's been a few months, I've built a few bikes with this kit-- The specialty tools are excellent, the general tools are crap.

Excellent: The crank puller, pedal wrench, wire snips, and bottom bracket tools have proved to be the most useful/unique tools in the kit. These are great.

Crap:
-The tip on the chain link tool (chain popper) bent on the second use. I emailed Park and they replaced the tip, but it's still some low-grade, malleable metal composite.
-The tip on the flat head screwdriver broke off while opening a can of paint. Albeit, that's not the intended use, but seriously for the cost of this kit, that shouldn't happen. That's cheap. The smaller screwdrivers have a lot of flex in them and will eventually break/bend under normal tightening use.

As long as the bottom bracket wrench tool fits your bike, this kit has 99% of what you'll need to break one down or build one up, but the cost and the failures just wrecks the overall value. In a do-over, I would probably buy the specialty tools separately from Park and supplement accordingly, but then you wouldn't have 99% of what you needed to build a bike in one purchase-- and a separate tool box to house them in, which is surely worth something.

So, 3-stars for being off target, not a rip-off, but not a great deal.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  An Exceptional Jumping-Off Point, February 25, 2010
By fontosaurus@gmail.com (Minneapolis, MN United States)
I'm a bike shop employee of over a decade now, a bike aficionado, and beginning framebuilder. I bought my Park AK-37 kit in 1999, and it's been worth every penny. Could I have just dragged my bike to the shop to work on it with their tools? Sure, but giving myself the ability to work from home was an important step forward in my life as a cyclist.

The AK-37 will provide every tool you need to perform basic maintenance on your bike, and is worth every penny. Thus far, my tools have held up to years of use (and abuse), and I have nothing but praise for the kit. If you're just getting started with setting up your own bicycle workshop, this is an excellent way to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Exactly as described, August 27, 2009
By B. Crawford (West Virginia, USA)
Sick of dragging your bike to the shop for simple repairs? Slap down the cash for this baby. It IS a little pricey, but it has the tools to completely rip down a bike to the frame. Do-it-yourself oriented people will really like this tool set. Quality is top notch.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great value for starting your home bike workshop, August 6, 2009
By Jeremy Rowland (Mckinney, TX)
Don't look any further if you are starting to build a home workshop and don't already have many specialty bike tools. This will give you almost everything you need to do most maintenance tasks, from emergency trail repairs to drivetrain overhauls, and Park tools are the highest in quality. If you have "Zinn and the Art of Mountain (or Road) Bike Maintenance" (highly recommended for your first repair book), this set covers all of the level 1 & 2 tool sets and even a few of the advanced level 3. There are a few that overlap what you probably already have, like screwdrivers and hex wrenches, but they are quality items and it's always handy to have extra of these.

You may need to supplement this set with some add'l tools for some tasks, such as replacing a headset, but most of those are more pricey and best bought (or substituted) as needed. The toolbox is nothing special, but it is handy and sturdy enough, and matches the tools to boot.

Pair this with the Park PCS-10 repair stand to make your own "professional" workshop at home!

I prefer to buy at least some of my bike parts and gear at local shops to support them, but Amazon's price on this set was too good to pass up. Even the other online discounters are $80-100 more.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great way to start, July 5, 2009
By Rajagopalan Babu
This tool kit is a great way to start fixing biking. I realized that my chain needs replacement badly. Being a beginner, it is a great way to start. The set of tools are just right.

I am not sure whether I am going to use the 'true'ing tools. I bought Park Blue Book II also, which makes the reference to the tools in this kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Buy this even for a beginners set, January 28, 2011
By D. A. Walker (Trinidad)
This has everything you need. Ok maybe some of the tools are duplicated with things you already have, but having them all together in one set means no more hunting down tools and rifling through drawers. The chain cleaning tool is also a worthwhile addition, it really does get your chain nice and clean. There are clearly tools that... I may never use. I hope I do, it means that I am truly getting to know my bike inside and out... but hopefully it will be maintenance and not emergency!!!! Great kit.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  "Required" tool set, July 6, 2009
By W. Turechek (Sunshine State)
I like to keep my bicycle working in tip-top condition. However, when doing routine maintenance you find that there is a problem doing your own work. There are several components on a bicycle that require specialized tools. The tools contained in this Park Tools tool set are made specifically to work on bicycles. Most of the tools that are needed to perform routine maintenance on your bicycle are in this toolbox. The toolbox provides a convenient way to keep these specialty tools together and ready-to-go when it's time to work on the bicycle. Park Tools also has a website that has videos that show you how to use these tools when performing routine tasks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  High quality tools, May 21, 2009
By Andy R (Burlington, CT USA)
These are great quality tools. Pricey but given an average cost of $40 per service visit at your local bike shop, they soon pay for themselves.

The tools included seem to cover most of a home bike mechanics needs, though I'm sure there are some real specialised tasks that might need more.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  It works, November 10, 2010
By Davey (Napa Valley ,CA USA)
Well it basically covers what you need. And like all things, you get what you pay for.
There is probably no other kit that is this good for the price anyways. That said however the tools you get are not Park Tool's very 'top of the line'.
I would say they are mostly 'home owner grade tools'. For instance, Park makes different grades of the same tools, like the pedal wrench, they make the,
Park Pedal Wrench (PW-3)), and the Park Tool Professional Pedal Wrench - PW-4 (which you get in the Park Tool Professional Tool Kit - PK-63) It has better ergonomic design.
Then the sprocket removal tool. ThePark Tool Sprocket Remover / Chain Whip - SR-1is what you get here.
In the PK-63 pro tool kit you get the , Park Tool Sprocket Remover / Chain Whip - SR-2, with better ergonomic design.
And the Allen wrench kit, the one here is fine, but the kit in the PK-63 is better.
Ok, but if you want the Pro grade of Park Tools you will have to get the PK-63, but that costs, $700 to $800 here.
So, like I said you get what you pay for. And if you really want to go all out you can get the Park Master Kit, (MK -195) which Amazon does not even list here. That one goes online for about $4000 or more.
So this took kit is fine for your average joe biker dude. The AK -37.

The reasons I gave it a 4 star instead of five, was the fact that the kit has the lower grade tools, and the fact that the kit gives you a bunch of junk most Mt. Bikers never use , like the chain cleaner, none of the pros I know ever use that thing, And the screw drivers and stuff, well, I'll use it, but I wish this kit came with the Park Tool FR-6 Freewheel Remover for BMX Bikes so I can change out my rear cog on my Single Speed mountain bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Tools, Need a Better Box, November 23, 2010
By y9kids
The tools are great, and that's why I rate 5 stars. I have used the crank puller, allen wrenches, and bottom bracket tool. Because I have five (5) older (late 1990's) Raleigh bikes, I had to buy a pin spanner (Park Tool #SP-2), hook spanner wrench (Park Tool #HCW-5), and box end wrench (Park Tool #HCW-4).

The box is somewhat flimsly being made of thin plastic. I plan to get a stiffer plastic box on sale at hardware store or Harbor Freight.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Park Tool AK-37 Advanced Mechanic Tool Kit is a great buy, November 18, 2010
By IronmanLongRunr
I've heard good things over the years about Park Tools and when I finally decided it was time to fix up an old bike I had in storage, they were only tools I considered. I bought the Park Tool AK-37 Advanced Mechanic Tool Kit online through Amazon. It looked like it would have just about everything I could need. It arrived quickly and was stocked exactly as described. I was able to fully renovate my bike without any problems with the tools provided, with only one small exception. I had to buy a park tool adjustable wrench (any adjustable wrench or correct size regular wrench would work as well, but I wanted a wrench dedicated to that tool set) to be able to use the cassette tool. The tools are high quality and customer service from the company is fantastic (I broke blade of small screw driver they replaced w/o any problems). If you're looking to do any of your own bike repairs, this is the kit for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best bike purchase around (besides the bike), March 30, 2011
By Klips
As the other reviews attest, this kit has everything you'll need that doesn't require a trip to the bike store anyway. All of the tools are remarkably well made, and the toolbox has space to spare so that you can put in your allen keys, adjustable spanners and such.

TAKE NOTE: The shipping weight listed (5lbs) is NOT CORRECT, it is closer to 30lbs.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Comprehensive but missing a few tools, August 18, 2011
By TriMatty
Love this set but I think Park should include their adjustable wrench or freewheel removal wrench in this kit. The cassette tools are useless without them. The handle of the chainwhip fits over the cassette removal tools but how are you supposed to keep the cassette from spinning then? Also, I think the 4th Hand tool would have been a nice addition. Other than that, it has everything you need.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Home mechanic's dream, September 6, 2010
By didirider
Another one for my husband's present. He felt really spoilt with this tool set. There are enough tools in the box to keep him busy for a few years of bike repairs for his hobby.

Not sure why there's the screwdriver set since that's usually included in anyone's regular tool set. The allen keys are in the tri set, which is a pain to use in tight spots. Wire cutter cuts really smoothly and easily. I haven't really had the chance to use most of the tools yet!

We had a small problem with the chain breaker the first time it was used. The pin broke under normal pressure, which was unexpected given Park Tool's reputation for quality products. The Park Tools service didn't let us down though. When we emailed them about the pin, they responded the same day and offered to replace the pin. Great service!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  The START of a great Bike Tool Kit, April 26, 2011
By AtomicBike
This tool kit is full of all the specialty bike tools you should need! It also includes some I could have done without...
For a complete tool set, add this to a mechanics tool kit (wrenches, sockets, pliers/vice-grip, a regular set of allen keys, mallet...) and you will have a advanced mechanics toolkit.
Expensive by comparison, but high quality tools (Much nicer than Pedro's)!
Have Fun and Keep the Rubber Side Down!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Tool Set, March 15, 2011
By Timbo
I got the Park Tool AK-37 Advanced Mechanic Tool Kit and I love it. My wife and I own 2 Trek FXs and a department store Schwinn hybrid and so far, everything I have needed has been in the tool kit. Bottom bracket tools and everything. You can even remove the rear cassette. The only thing you might need is an exta cone wrench if the bearing cone and the jam nut are the same size on your bike. In my case I need an extra 15mm.

I have read about some issues about the chain breaker tool bending or something. I haven't used the chain breaker yet but I can't see this happening if its used correctly. Park Tools may have already fixed the problem with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Tool Kit for a Novice, May 27, 2010
By Robert L. Rosenberg (Minneapolis, Mn.)
Even though being a novice mechanic I purchased the Park Mechanic Advanced Tool Kit for working on bikes, I found it to be very usefull. If I ran into problems I just went to my Bike store and got help from them. This worked out really well and allowed me to totally disassemble my bike. I am looking forward to cleaning all the parts and reassembling the bike. I would recommend this tool kit as a basic need because it supplies so many tools that one needs to work on a bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Impressive, May 24, 2011
By clorox
These tools are solid. The photograph doesn't do a good job conveying the size and heft of some of the included tools. The pedal wrench has a nice fat handle that should make life easy when doing pedal swaps--no pain on the hands.

This would make the perfect gift for any bike nut. Even if that person already has a few tools, get them this kit. "Happy Thursday, Dear!" One can never have too many tools.

Amazon currently has the lowest price around on the Park AK 37 (Advanced Tool Kit). If you have a Prime membership, the free shipping along with the really low price of $207 can't be beat.

The machining on the tools seems very precise. No more stripped screws or allen bolts from using cheap tools. The Phillips screwdriver slots exactly into place, as do the hex wrenches. This means no more rounded-off or damaged screws and bolts. Cheap tools don't fit as securely as these do.

The chain cleaning tool really does an excellent job. Some reviewers have commented on this tool so I wanted to add something to put any fears to rest. I have used the cleaner on two bikes so far. Did one bike and was so impressed that I promptly did another. Filled the tool with some generic citrus degreaser and followed the instructions. It is well built and easy to clean after use. The magnet at the bottom picks up metal fragments.

The minor weakness is in the design of the lid clasps on the chain cleaner. There are plastic stopper rails that the metal lid-clips butt up against. (Like a tiny plastic ridge to stop the clip from going too far.) These stoppers fractured when locking the lid into place, but this in no way impacts the function or durability of the cleaner. The metal clips seat solidly in a groove, and the device could have just as easily been constructed without the stopper rails. (Don't know if explanation this made any sense.) Additionally, I did not end up with any stray bristles in the chain. Maybe after a few dozen more uses (doubtful?), but then again the brushes are designed to be replaceable. Bottom line is that this is a good tool. Obviously you don't want to drop any plastic tool on a concrete floor, as one reviewer noted. It feels solid enough to last.

Yes, the actual toolbox conveys the feeling of cheap plastic. It is adequate. The tools are what you are paying for.

What a great excuse to work on my bike. This is one of the better purchases I've made on Amazon.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Some good, some ok and some inferior qualiy, September 11, 2011
By Science Oriented Client (Michigan City, IN United States)
I spent over $300 of Park Tool wrenches and tools, including this toolbox and several additional specialty bike tools.

The tool box has most of what you need for regular situations. You may need to get a few more but inexpensive tools like a Hex (Allen) balldriver wrench set, an 8 mm Allen Wrench, etc.

Unfortunately, some of the tools and wrenches included in this toolbox are built with inferior materials and workmanship. As an example, one of the bottom bracket damage the teeth of my bottom bracket and the tool got damaged too. After the fiasco, I went to a bike shop. The tool they have is way heavier which much thicker teeth.

My advice is that even when you will spend more money in the tools itself; buy professional grade tools and wrenches. Even if you have to buy them little by little. You will save money and many headaches by being able to do the labor yourself and avoiding spending money in new parts because your tools are low quality and damaged them.

This kit has pretty much every thing you need to fix and maintain your bike. The rubber grips on the handles make them more comfortable to use. The tool box isn't the best but it helps keep all the tools in one place and transport them. I looked around before I bought this kit and it is a good price for the set of tools you get.

This kit had everything I needed and more. I was told to just get the tools I needed but I went this rout and I happy with my decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  So glad I did!!, February 15, 2012
By Starkey (North Central Texas)
The sport of cycling is a new one for me. I am an amateur in every sense of the word. I never knew there were special tools for bicycles, but I soon learned I would need a set if I didnt want to pay LBS prices. I scoured the internet for different tool kits and advise about which tools to buy, and Park is the brand that came out on top every time.

I love this kit!!

I was nervous about spending this kind of money on tools, but I'm so glad I did. I have a few odds and ends tools from other companies, but none compare to the quality of Park.

The only negative I will give this kit is on the bottom bracket and cassette tools, it sure would be nice if they had handles attached to them. I have seen other kits with handles built on these tools and it sure seems like the thing to have, but it is still a great tool set for a starter home bike mechanic.

So far with this kit I have: installed new shifter and brake cable/housing, cleaned and oiled my chain, installed new rear derailleur, removed old square taper bottom bracket and installed new hollowtech crank and bottom bracket, and I have even trued my wheels! This overhaul at the LBS would have probably cost me at least the price of this tool kit.

This is BAR NONE the CHEAPEST price for this kit on the internet. Definitely worth saving your money for!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I absolutely love this kit, February 1, 2012
By GL
I absolutely love this kit -- there isn't much else to say! I have used *every* single tool that came with this kit (except two or three of the cone wrenches), and EVERY tool has been good or better. It would have also cost me way more to buy these pieces separately. Years after purchase, no tool has broken, dulled, or lost potency.

My stable of tools has grown by half since this initial purchase, and luckily they all still fit in the toolbox that's in this package.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent Bike toolkit, January 23, 2012

I Think if this toolkit has an excellent clyclone chain cleaner it must come along with Park CB-2 Citrus Chain-Brite Cleaner.

Excellent choice for a beginner in the cycling repair area!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Nice Kit, December 14, 2011

This kit has pretty much every thing you need to fix and maintain your bike. The rubber grips on the handles make them more comfortable to use. The tool box isn't the best but it helps keep all the tools in one place and transport them. I looked around before I bought this kit and it is a good price for the set of tools you get.
