Cannot put a price on safety, August 4, 2009

These pads are worth every penny, imo. The plastic armor on the knee and elbow are "riveted" in place by sturdy metal type material rings. Not cheaply sewn on. Flexibility for both knee and elbow pads are a non-issue. The design is good so that your elbow and knee joints aren't restricted to move.
Knee pad: A great snug fit without the typical, "slide down your leg" effect. The elastic material that wraps around the knees acts like a bandage and gives added support to the knees. A feature I like, since my knees aren't young and as durable anymore.
Elbow pad: Easy on, easy off. Comfortable to wear and it doesn't get tiresome/annoying during long distances of roller blading.
Wrist guards: Plastic formers are stiff and seem well molded to withstand numerous amounts of shock. Fit is great. The backhand plastic mold is almost "invisible" to the feel. The palm plastic mold, wraps around the heel of my hand perfectly. The length is just right where your fingers aren't restricted from bending backwards and forwards.
5 stars, easily!

ProTec Street Pads, April 19, 2009

This product is worth every cent. After purchasing these pads, I didn't really use the knee pads (because I'm weird), but the wrist guards are awesome, the elbow pads worked great, and for the small amount of time that I wore the knee pads, they were good too. I felt invincible. Take the money to buy these pads, whatever sport, they're great!

saved my wrist and elbow this morning, September 9, 2009
By Skyweb (Seattle, Washington)

If you are learning to roller blade get these, worth the price and they do work. Took a couple nasty spills this morning and I would have had either a broken wrist or a badly sprained one. I got these becasue my wife said I needed to if I was going to learn to blade at my age. I am glad I did. 50 bucks is a cheap price to stay out of the hospital. I got up and just kept on going marveling at how hard I hit the concrete and the pads looked unfazed. I did practice falling in them first so that probably helped. Regardless, if you are the slightest bit energetic or aggressive when learning a sport where your body and other surfaces like concrete etc are going to share space, you would be crazy not to get these. I looked at several others in the stores, bought these on the internet and am glad I didn't buy the ones I looked at for around 35 bucks in the bike store. Those were merely padded not hard shelled plastic and I still would have thrashed my wrist this morning with them. These were like I was indistructable. They gave me confidence to get out of my comfort zone and protected me while I did so. Only reason I am not rating them a 5 is because you have to fool with them over your clothing to get the fit right a couple times. Once you do finally get them adjusted, they stay adjusted and are well worth it. Could be I haven't used them enough too.

nothing new, June 27, 2011
By Glaublich (Arlington, VA.)

So far I am only the second skateboarder to review these pads. I am reviewing them from a skateboarding perspective. It is now 2011, and these pads don't feel any more or less comfortable or functional than other leading brand skate pads I've worn since 1986. Aside from rivets on the plastic caps maybe, there has been zero apparent innovation in this field in that time, presumably because skaters tend not to wear pads unless required by a particular park or contest, and so I guess not much research and development has been put into a product that primarily sells to the 6-12 crowd. On the other hand, by comparison, skate shoes and decks have evolved quite a bit and it is apparent in the multitude of styles and options available, because a good pair of shoes and a good deck is the foundation on which the rest is built. Pads? Not cool for the cool kids, so nobody had the incentive to improve them.
As a result I found these pads to be just as movement-impairing and frustrating as pads I wore over 20 years ago. Sad. Because pads are a great backup when trying new tricks, especially when you are no longer a child or adolescent (or nowadays, a spoiled lazy early twenty-something still leaning on mom and dad for basic survival)and can't afford to be off your feet with an injury because now you work and pay your own way in life.
As far as protection goes, the knee and elbow pads are good and will do what they have been doing now for 30 years or so. The wrist guards are a bit of a joke however as the plastic inserts are not very sturdy (not enough support). The least they could have done was leave an opening so that I could fashion a stronger insert to replace them. That translates into a stitch here and not there. Sure, you put them on and they feel secure, but when you fall (and I understand these things aren't for sky-diving hands first) there is actually WEIGHT and FORCE (physics geeks feel free to clarify or correct here)going into the wrist/ forearm, and the plastic inserts are not up to the challenge of the reality inherent in falling hands-first. I actually remember my wrist guards from the 80's being more stiff with some sort of alloy rather than cheap plastic.
The sizing chart on the pro-tec web sight is fairly accurate. It seems a bit tight at first, but you have to break them in like anything else.

Very good pad set, June 18, 2011
By Brian (Columbus, OH USA)
|
|
This is a very good set of pads for rollerskating, rollerblading, skateboarding, and other various activities. I ordered a pair for myself and a pair for my wife for the purpose of rollerblading, and they do an excellent job of protecting our knees, our elbows, and our wrists.
I am slightly bigger, more muscular, but also fatter than an average guy (5'11" 220-225lbs) and one of the only complaints that I have about this set is the sizing. I was very meticulous about measuring to ensure that I got the right size, and although the wrist pads and elbow pads fit pretty well, the knee pads were quite snug. I do realize that they are supposed to be relatively snug, but they are pretty difficult to even slide on, in my case, and it leaves a very noticeable mark on my knees from the squeezing after 30 minutes or more. I ordered the XL size set for myself, and despite having pretty large thighs and calves (hockey player), I still expected the XL knee pads to fit appropriately because my measurements still fell inside its listed size range in the guide.
Besides the fit issue that I had with the knee pads, I am very happy with the set and my wife had absolutely zero complaints about the set. It gave her all of the confidence she needed to start trying to skate harder and faster. She told me that falling doesn't bother her much at all because the knee pads are so large, comfortable, and protective, and she's glad to have the wrist pads so she won't break her wrists if she uses them to break her fall.
Although I haven't had any falls/spills yet, I'm sure that I will at some point in time, and with my weight, I could do a lot of serious damage if I don't have good protection so having a solid, high-quality set of pads like this was very important to me.

Will get you through the first few months, March 13, 2011

I purchased this set for roller derby. The wrist and elbow pads do the job just fine. Regarding the Knee Pads - I'm pretty steady on my feet and don't fall too often but as they've been broken in, they've started to slip up when I fall. During our first bout, they slipped and I really hurt that bone below my knee that sticks out. I should have ordered another pair then but held off. I did the same thing the other day - twice so I'm definitely investing in TSG's. (I find 187s a bit bulky). So bottom line is they are ok when you are just starting out and you don't know whether you're going to stick with it. But, if you decide to stay with Derby and get into scrimmaging and bouting, you'll want to make the investment.

This review is coming from a skateboarder. These pads are the most conformable pads I've ever worn. And I've worn a lot. There's a local skate spot that is extremely dangerous that protected me from broken arms, and my friend broken every thing. One of the things I love about these pads is the flexibility. I generally hate wearing pads because of that reason, but these I will wear when I need to with out caring. Another thing that is great is no skin irritation. My original pads by Mongoose were extremely itchy. These aren't. The other thing I love is that the shells aren't just sowed on, there one with the foam. In the end these are great pads.
