Great storage device!, October 18, 2009
By NM Golf Girl (ABQ, New Mexico)

Not only was this an easy set up, but getting the kayak belted in was easy. I throw my misc gear in the cockpit (vest, water bottle etc). On the top we not only put our paddles but 3 sets of skiis & poles, 2 golf drivers & other stuff we didn't have a home for in our garage. It holds 250lbs as long as its mounted propperly so why not? We mounted this up high so I can still put my freezer chest down below our boat. This was a great storage solution for us!

Sturdy, but NOT really padded., July 9, 2010
By W. Tubbert (Capital District, NY, USA)

I purchased two sets of the Malone J-Dock Hybrid Kayak Racks. They are clearly very sturdy, well-made, and easy to install. For this they get 5 stars. However, be aware that these are not padded in any way. The black areas are a solidly built hard plastic and only the bottom plastic support has a small patch of ridgid hard rubber for a small degree of cushioning.
That said, these have held our 12' kayaks for over two years now without any sign of stress or give, and no apparent marring of the glossy finish of the kayaks themselves.

A real Space Saver!, December 12, 2009
By K. Jenkins LVN, LMT (East Texas, USA)

My husband tried to make a pulley contraption to put a kayak on the ceiling of the garage, it didn't work. So I searched and found these on amazon and he was delighted. We put them on the garage wall the day they came. Easy to install and strong. We put our larger kayak on the racks and hung the smaller hobie from them, so it only took one set of the racks to store both boats. They are nicely accessible and very affordable.

kayak rack, November 7, 2010
By mcwilch

I purchased the Malone J Dock for my Hobie 2 person kayak. It was very easy to mount on the garage wall with enclosed wood screws. Just make sure you get them into the studs. My kayak weigh about 90 lbs. and the rack holds it very stable even without the straps. If small kids around I would probably use the straps for additional safety.

quality product, October 16, 2010
By kayakowner

I installed the storage racks today. This is a high quality product. I put a tarpon 120 on top and hung another 120 on the bottom. Racks can easily handle the weight. The kayak hanging from the bottom was right up against the wall. The kayak on the rack had a slight angle back to the wall. This is a very affordable way to store two kayaks.

One more great Malone product, August 10, 2010
By Hughfo (Raleigh, NC)
|
|
I have a Malone carrier (with extender) which works well for my wife when loading and unloading solo. Consequently, I had no problem buying the Malone garage storage rack. It was inexpensive and easy to install. I have a 'Tarpon 120' kayak, which is flatter and wider than most boats as well as being 12 feet long. The storage rack not only holds the boat well, but I have had no need to secure with tie down straps. Granted, not all kayaks will fit as well as mine, but the fact is that I feel that my rack is being used optimally, yet is not being strained in the least.

Very well made, kayak shape will affect how secure it sits in, September 10, 2011
By D. MCKICHAN

These racks are very very well made. After lag screwing them in, I am certain they could hold 10 kayaks let alone the two it is desgned to hold. They also look great. The price isn't bad either considering what even cheap (and cheaply made) hooks go for.
I have mine mounted on a garage wall and it gets my kayak, paddle, vest up and out of the way. I have a malibu mini x, which is 9'3" by 33.5". It is short, wide, and somewhat deep. I had to reposition the racks twice to get the malibu to sit right. The first time I had the racks to close and the depth of the kayak caused it to sit to far upright. Although it stayed there, even the slightest forward motion had it tumbling forward out of the racks as the keel was so deep. Since it sits in front of my car, I didn't think that would be good for the long term future of my hood. (the long straps pictured didn't work as the kayaks taper was already starting and they would just slip off to the side and the yak would still fall forward).
I repositioned them further apart. Since I was working with a 9 foot kayak and still needed to hit the 2x4's for the screws, you can image there wasn't much room to go far apart. Doing so did somewhat eliminated the kayak's tendency to want to fall forward off the rack as the bottom can now slide a bit forward in the racks. It is just now it catches only the edges of the rack due to how the kayak comes to a point near the ends. It would slip sideways in the rack if bumped hard. You want it to sit under the yak before it begins to taper (ditto for the strap holder below)as that puts the most boat in contact with the holder. With a short yak that is literally just a few feet and it is hard due to the keel which leads to a forward tip and then the fact the taper begins so quickly which leads to side to side slippage issue.
I have bungies hooked into small bike hooks in the wall to make sure it would never fall forward just to the side, they also help lock it down a bit (the bungies run over the middle). The mailbu plastic is also very slipery as well, to the point I had to stencil on the boat numbers as the stickers type numbers wouldn't hold. A kayak this size with slippery plastic will not fit in the rope holder that hangs below the rack as it just slips out side to side. You would need to put small hooks near the ends of the yak to attach the carry handle to (using bungies) to eliminate the sidie to side slippage (while the starps then bear the weight).
That being said I still am happy with it. I know its short coming are in part due to the dimensions and shape of my paticular boat. I can see myself getting a second kayak in the future that is a bit longer and I think that a longer length and more gradual taper on the ends will fit into the bottom holders better. Ditto for a longer yak working much better with this racks upper holder and straps. Again this rack great for the price. The longer the kayak the better I think it would work. You may need some small hooks and bungies to lock your yak in depending on its size and shape.

does the job at a reasonable price, April 21, 2012
By Jessica

My husband and I have two 12 foot kayaks (Pungo 120) and have been looking at storage options for a few months. Since we do not have a garage, we have to store these in the basement. The Malone J-Dock system was fairly easy to install taking about 20 minutes total. It took longer to mount than other reviews suggest since we had to predrill the 4 holes into the concrete foundation. Once the holes are drilled the installation was quick (5 minutes). Instead of using the bolts supplied by the manufacturer (which are for wood studs), we went to the local hardware store and purchased bolts that expand in the concrete as you tighten the bolts with a socket wrench. The straps provided do allow you to elevate a second kayak off the ground below the storage rack. I highly suggest this system if you are looking to store multiple kayaks.

I bought these around 6 months ago and they are still doing great. They were super easy to put up and they've been holding both mine and my wife's kayaks ever since we bought them. This was a much cheaper solution to storage than other devices I saw and the materials are very high quality. I'd definitely buy this again.

Great kayak storage, April 17, 2012
By Dan
|
|
The storage system is great. Mounts easily, and holds the kayak perfectly. The product arrived very quickly and installed in minutes. The only thing I need to say is do NOT use the supplied bolts. Go to the hardware store and buy good quality bolts prior to installation. I drilled the pilot holes prior to installation as instructed. When I tightened the bolts until they were snug, I tightened the first on just a little, and it snapped!. I tightened the rest just until barely snug, and it works well. I just wish I knew beforehand how terrible the bolts were so the first one wouldn't have snapped. I also bought a Malone roof rack for the kayak, and now I am nervous about the quality of the bolts for mounting to the crossbars. I hope it goes well...

Safe and Strong Storage, January 23, 2012
By 3 Dancing Girls (Amston, CT United States)

We used to store our kayaks on our covered deck, till last year. The Northeast got killed with snow and ice and our roof came crashing down on 4 of our kayaks. After digging them out, and finding one damaged seat we decided to store them in our garage somehow. I went on Amazon and found these brackets. We were not disappointed, we got them up within a 1/2 hour taping into the studs and pre drilling the holes. I park my Mustang, and my husband Concours bike in the garage so I wanted something that was not going to damage the car or bike by falling off the wall. The kayaks have not moved. Each one of our kayaks weighs about 50 lbs. These brackets are strong, heavy duty and will not let you down.

Solid system. Thanks for all the reviewers who steered me towards this product. Hardest part was indeed finding the studs. I am 225 Lbs I hung all my weight on them and they did not budge. Two yaks sit on them with paddles, and I check for movement every now and then. No problems to date.

Perfect solution to my kayak storage issue, November 4, 2011
By Monica Wright

I don't usually write reviews. This storage rack works great and does exactly what I needed it to. I'm using the rack to store my Pamlico 145, a two man kayak that weighs 65 plus pounds. The rack is sturdy and it has plenty of capacity to store oars, etc without even using the additional straps. Now that I've used this rack I'd buy one again if the need arose.

Strong & Sturdy, September 28, 2011
By reviewerjoe (chicago, IL)
|
|
After reviewing the available products on the market, I purchased these and found them to be sturdy, yet easy to install in my garage. the hardest part was to find the studs to which I could mount these. I have been able to easily store two kayaks, a 10' and a 10.5', and can take them out of the rack or restore them easily by myself. I also store the paddles and accessories in the kayaks when I am not using them. This has worked great and it is much easier than some of the hoist systems if you have room on a wall in your garage.

Worked great. Kayak is up and out of the way., September 16, 2011
By David D (Richardson, TX)

Mounted it in my garage and it's holding my kayak perfectly. I was glad to get it out of the way and on the wall. The J-Docks are sturdy and minimalistic. The screws that they mount with are pretty large so you need a solid stud with the screw dead center in order to get a good mount. Also, the stud may need some patching when you take the screws out. Overall I'd highly recommend these two anyone as a wall mount for one or two kayaks.

This was a great purchase, September 6, 2011
By Woody (St. Clair Shores, MI USA)

My wife and I bought two new 13 ft kayaks from REI recently and needed to store them out of the way in our garage. I found this on Amazon and, after reading the reviews, decided to try it out. It took longer to clean out the area to mount these brackets than it did to hang them. We spaced them out, drilled four holes in the studs of the garage and bolted them on using the hardware that came with the brackets. We followed the simple directions on "lacing' the webbing through each bracket and then placed one boat on the rack and slung the second one underneath just like the picture on the box indicated. We have break-down paddles so we put them inside the boat along with our vests. The whole job was done in less than an hour and it functions perfectly. Not to mention it the boats look great hanging nicely on the wall. I would recommend this product to anyone needing to store one or two boats off the floor.

Works great for my Inuit 12.5, August 26, 2011
By Scifiguy99 (California)
|
|
I needed these to hold my 12 1/2' Inuit that's 26" wide and 55 lbs. The Inuit fits perfectly and is very solid without having to strap it in. Installation is simple with the included lag screws. I just mounted the first rack and placed a 2x4 between them with a level to mount the second. For those that are worried about the racks depth when mounted on the wall like I was: Mine stick out 16 5/8" from the wall at the deepest point. I wanted to know exactly how deep these were as I have a tight fit in the garage but they worked great. FYI I mounted mine so the kayak sits a little higher than the side view mirror of my vehicle when I drive in since my space is limited. I used the included smaller straps to hold my two paddles below the racks. Those straps mount approximately 10 1/4" from the wall and hang to just about 15 1/2" below the bottom of the rack. I mounted the two racks 42" apart. I didn't use the larger straps that are included for holding a second kayak. I have had no issue yet with the racks not being padded and my garage temps get well over 90 here. So far there hasn't been any deformation in the time that I have had these but I was thinking about adding some foam just to be safe.
Update: Two months later I still had not added padding to the racks and I noticed there are two dents where the brackets make contact with the kayak. Perhaps it was just the way I have the kayak mounted in the racks without the straps and the extremely hot temps in the garage but I will definitely be adding padding before I put the kayak back in the rack.

I use this storage rack to hold up 2 kayaks on my garage wall. I also put some of my kayaking things inside the kayaks for storage. Easy to install. Does the job very well, April 21, 2011
By Jan C. Jacobs

The racks come with four lag screws that you need to mount them on a garage wall and two different sets of straps for either hanging paddles below, or another kayak. The instructions are very clear and there was no problem mounting them to studs in my storage area. Bought two sets (for 4 kayaks) and had them mounted on the wall and kayaks in place in only a couple of hours. I highly recommend them if you need to store items up off the floor in a garage or storage area.

Great product for Kayak, November 14, 2010
By J*2

|
I purchased the Malone J-Dock storage racks based on earlier reviews and I couldn't be happier with them. Easy to install, Kayak fits great with no need to strap down and another kayak can be added with straps supplied. I do have to agree with the other reviewers about the lack of padding and that's the only reason I didn't give it five stars. I had some 1" foam laying around from previous packaging, cut it to size and tied down to racks....PERFECT. I purchased these through Amazon, great price and received them in four days with the free shipping.

The racks were easy to install. Make sure you have the right size drill bit and pre-drill the holes. The lag screws provided are heavy duty. It helps to have a socket set to install them quickly. I like the fact that they include straps to help hold the kayak in place, in case of something accidentally bumping it or the wind trying to flip it over. I don't use the loops for hanging my other kayak, I just installed another rack underneath it.

We bought this to have a low cost way to store our two kayaks. It was easy to install on the side of our shed. Good quality at a decent cost. It was also fairly easy to put the kayaks on the racks, one on the top of the racks and the other hanging in the straps. Looks neat and is saving us a lot of space in our garage, shed or yard.

Nice idea, poor implementation., November 10, 2011
By Primed
|
|
We have two single person kayaks that we had hoped to hang using the racks. We measured and drilled holes into the brick (and grout)and started screwing the bolts in. The bolts are very poorly made - the heads broke off on all four of them. Frustrated, my husband went to the hardware store to get new bolts. After almost 2 hours, the rack was secured on the wall. We strapped the kayaks on as the directions instructed, and then "pop" - one strap busted. We ended up using car tow straps instead. Suppose you get what you pay for.
One word to the wise - use these in your garage or in a covered area. We have already seen some rust. Not to mention our kayaks are weathering.

Never figured out how to hold 2 boats as directed, November 24, 2010
By Thomas J. Porter
|
|
I needed something that would hold two kayaks, a 13 foot Necky and and 11 foot Ocean Venus. The top one was easy (lay it on the racks and secure it) but I could not figure out how to use the available ties to fit around the other kayak.
I finally took two tie downs that had been holding the Kayaks on my car, hung them from the racks, inserted the kayak and raised them by simply tightening the straps until I reached the necessary height.
The results were good but I still wonder what I was supposed to do.
