Very Forgiving, April 16, 2010
By Old Hippie (St. Louis, MO.)
|
|
Ever go to re-tape a handlebar and you just totally mess it up? I have. I admit it. Then you need to buy more handlebar tape - and do it right the second time. This stuff is VERY FORGIVING. You can bend it - stretch it - pull on it...if you goof up, simply unwind a little & start again. Just remember to wrap the left side bar clockwise starting at the bottom & working up. The right side bar - just the opposite. Start at the bottom & wrap counter-clockwise.
Very comfy also. Good stuff!

It's good grip tape., October 12, 2008
By Frederick Bryan (Clemson, SC)
|
|
It's not very remarkable, but it does what is supposed to. I used it to replace some "tape" on my dad's 1760's Shwinn Varsity, and am very pleased.
On the quality: It seems great. I don't have a whole lot of experience on the stuff, but it was very easy to put on for a couple of reasons. First off, it is stretchy, and won't tear if you pull it tight. It's actually quite difficult to stretch it to breaking point (of course you can, though). It is backed with a substance that is tacky, but not like glue. It might be the same type of stuff they stick on the bottom of cycling shorts to keep them from riding up. Anyway, it's very forgiving if you mess up.
The one thing that I have noticed is that it is starting to unwind on one side. However, this is due to the way I wrapped that side. IT IS NECESSARY TO WRAP THIS STUFF WITH THE RIGHT METHOD. Google it or something. Also, the tape they gave me was not good or long enough. Have some electrical tape ready.
About the color. I bought the yellow, which was SOLID yellow and not flaked like the red-black deal in the picture. It's nice.

Great stuff!, August 8, 2009

I'm a road biker of 25 years, this is the best tape I have ever used, far better than the Bontrager tape that came with my bike. Looks good, great cushion, goes on well with plenty of length. I have only had it on a couple of months but it feels like it will last a long time.

Excellent....Best Variety Of Colors..., June 20, 2010
By John Thomas (New England.....USA)
|
|
I own one of those single speed beach cruiser style bikes with the old fashion upright handlebars. I think this tape was actually made more for the more sleeker style bikes with the handlebars that leave you with chronic back pain in your old age. Personally I just decided to install it on my bike for it is very comfortable to grip anywhere, and also looks so cool getting you to wherever it is you are heading. This tape is very well padded, stretches on installation, is waterproof, adds a bit of color and handsomeness to your bike, and probably best of all comes in a rainbow of colors here on Amazon to match your wheels. Around these parts, bike tape is not hard to find, as long as you go to a bike shop. A few department and toy stores that carry bike accessories occasionally carry some. But not always, and never in all the colors available here on Amazon. Last but not least, you will pay more for this tape in just about any bike shop than you will here on Amazon. I not only found it a breeze to install, but actually enjoyed it. (Just don't forget to stretch it as you wrap it. It makes for a nice smooth bubble free look). This bike tape looks nice, provides a nice comfy padded grip anywhere on your handlebars, and comes in a full line of colors here on Amazon at an excellent price. I highly recommend it...

Poor Moisture Management, April 19, 2010
By A. H. Klein
|
|
For those who are not at all concerned with moisture management, it provides a good cushion. I, however, am very disappointed with this tape. After about half an hour, the tape is so wet that it's hard to hold. After about an hour on my bike my fingers are actually pruning. I shall be replacing it with something else.

Good tape, November 30, 2009
By David (MI)
|

This is a good bar tape. It is nothing special. It is reasonably comfortable. It was pretty easy to install, much easier than other brands that I have used. I bought the urban camo for something to jazz up my bike, and it looks pretty neat on a blue bike. It is a subtle accessory on the bike.

Good quality, minor quibbles, September 7, 2011
By Paul Randall (Galveston, TX United States)
|
|
The tape is very forgiving, I did my wrap job 3 times before I was satisfied. It is soft and grippy to the touch, just what you would want in a handle bar covering.
Quibbles? The Earth Cork color is MUCH lighter than the photo indicates, so if you are fussy about color matching there may be an issue for you. Was expecting plain silver end-plugs according to the description, but received Planet Bike branded plugs with a logo (black on a sparkly silver background) instead. Not so wild about having brands all over my bike.

Good, May 24, 2011

I like it. I've had mine on for about six months and it's still going strong. It cleans up pretty well with a bit of water and a rag. It's very durable and tolerant of re-wrapping. It took me a few tries to get it wrapped right for the length with butterfly/trekking bars.

Great tape - strong and perfect length, April 12, 2010
By Just a guy (Westchester, NY)
|
|
This is great tape. It is strong enough to pull hard when wraping. It is also soft and squishy enough to give a nice feeling when riding. Long rides don't have to result in numb fingers. The tape is long enough (just barely) two wrap both sides of a standard drop bar. Two short parts are included for the brake levers. End caps are also included, but the are very shiny silver - I saved my old black ones. Finally, included are two strips of black tape to finish the job. The strips are essentially electrical tape, which is what I used anyway.

Good tape, Good price, October 10, 2011

This is some nice tape, good strength when stretching for install and seems to hold up pretty well. I went on a 10 mile ride right after install. right away I felt as though my hands were floating in the astral plane. The directions were also in a hip cool language that I could understand. it was almost like poetry...
Plus it makes my fixie look sick nasty.

Good tape, October 3, 2011
By M. Russo
|
|
I usually buy white cork Michelin tape for my road bikes, but since I'm repainting one of mine light blue I wanted to wrap it in tan tape to complement the color scheme. These are a little pricier; almost twice as much as what I usually buy, but the super saver shipping offset some of the cost and it's identical to the price you'll find in any retail bike store.
Nevertheless I was pretty happy with it. This was the only offering I could find on Amazon for tan-brown tape, and it goes fairly well with gum-colored brake hoods (be careful which ones you buy, I don't recommend the Cane Creek ones mislabeled as "Dia-Compe" for sale here on Amazon). This tape feels and looks almost the same as regular cork tape, except it's much stretchier and lets you get a nice tight wrap. It's worth noting that there's no adhesive on the underside of the tape, only a sort of "rubbery tack" that grips the tape when you wrap it. Curiously though, the finishing strips do have adhesive. I wouldn't call this a drawback, but you have to be careful to wrap the tape in a clean place or keep it rolled up as much as possible or else the tack on the underside has a tendency to pick up dust and dirt. I imagine getting it dirty might mess with its grip.
So it's good tape. It's less cushiony than some, like other cork tapes, mostly because its stretchiness allowed me to wrap it tighter and thinner, but I don't mind because it lets me get a good grip. Highly recommended.

Good, July 14, 2011
By heyyou

I've needed to replace my handlebar tape for over a year. A few accidents made it look as if a dog had taken bites out of my handlebar tape.
I already had one roll of black, but that wouldn't be enough for both handlebars. So, I bought blue hoping it'd match my partially blue (Giant Defy 3, 2009) bike. It didn't, but I think it still looks nice with the harlequin wrap pattern (see pictures). The wrap itself is soft and cushy, yet strong and able to be re-wrapped dozens of times if you mess up. Wrapping regularly is easy though. This was my first time and I got it no trouble.
Note: if you're planning on doing the harlequin pattern and don't already have some other tape around, get two colors of cotton wrap instead and cover it with shellac. Search for instructions by Jim Varnum.

Nice bike tape, a real bargain for the price offered. The end caps help finish your handlebars for a sleek bike. There is added reflectiveness if you are conscious about your safety. Make sure you understand how to apply the tape before you attempt to put it on the bike.

Comfortable, durable, but prepare to break out the electrical tape, June 30, 2011
By JBona
|
|
This tape is quite comfortable (for day-to-day use on drop bars). I've purchased three sets for three different bikes over the last few years.
It's easy to install with one caveat: the actual adhesive tape provided to secure the ends of the bar tape to the bars is too short to wrap around a few times and properly secure it. My solution was to use
Electrical Tape for this, but that is an inconvenience if you don't already have the stuff lying around.
The tape is very durable and stands up well to being left outside daily in rain and snow. It hasn't deteriorated or even faded noticeably after suffering from this kind of abuse for more than a year, including through an entire (Northeast US) winter.
Overall, this stuff is a great value, and an easy way to improve your casual riding experience, especially if you're currently rocking an old ten speed with those petrified foam grips still clinging to the bars.

Looks awesome, feels super., April 11, 2011

So I have an old, blue road bike that needed some touching up and this tape was just the right thing. Not only does my bike have some awesome-looking orange bar tape, it's super comfortable, too. The cork is really worth it. I bike just about everywhere and although I'm not an extreme cycling guru, I have to say that I like this tape a lot. Also, it's really easy to wrap with, too. It was my first time wrapping my bars and I found it simple and the finished product looks great. I recommend it.

tape is easy and forgiving to install. It's pretty soft and cushy on the bike, which I like. looks good. Maybe my only beef (and it's a minor one) is that the pieces of electrical tape that come with the kit to finish the wrap are a bit short. I used a couple turns of tape from a roll that I had at home to finish it.

Easy to wrap, comfortable, December 8, 2010
By No Name (Colorado)

This tape is very comfortable to ride with. It adds plenty of padding for tired hands/wrists. The color was great, very vibrant and bright. I had never tried wrapping my handlebars before and this tape was very easy to figure out. I really bought this for the appearance and my bike looks fantastic now. New handlebar tape is great for making an older bike look "snazzy" again.

Better than cloth tape!, November 18, 2010
By brewmaster1957 (Tucson, Arizona)
|
|
Like most folks here, I agree that the tape is unremarkable because, well, it's just handlebar tape! I did like it much better than cloth and it has a nice grip and cushion to it. I found it VERY easy to install as you can re-wrap it if you mess it up. The end tape was not sticky enough for me, so I just used a small piece of electrical tape at the very end. I think this is a pretty good product and I will buy it again if needed.
P.S. If you can't install bar tape, perhaps you better not even be on a bike. Just sayin'!

Does the job extremely well. Nice and comfortable. The color is fantastic, too. Everything you need is included (tapes, etc.). The tape is tacky (but not too tacky) on the bottom, making it ridiculously easy to put on. It made a world of difference on my bike; so much more comfortable to ride now.

Solide Tape, Good Price, July 23, 2010
By M. Gillette
|
|
I bought the two tapes, one orange and one brown, for my girlfriend and my bikes. First the orange was an awesome vibrant color and both tapes had a great squishy feel to them when they were on the handlebar. I put the tape on both bikes by myself with very light research online on how to do it and the bar tape looks great! The only reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is that the strips of electrical tape they provide to hold the ends of the bar tape down are not very long or sticky so I had to put a drop of superglue on the end of each, but that worked great so no other complaints.

Comes off easily when you want it to., September 5, 2009
By Alan Most
|
|
What's also good about this tape, is it came off with no problem, unlike whatever tape that originally was on my bars. That tape was backed with some kind of foam and an adhesive that tore the foam from the tape when removed. I spent about two hours scraping the foam off, first with fingernails, then with a guitar pick. After that I had to use a citrus-based solvent. In contrast, my other bike had the planet bike cork tape, and when I removed that, there was no problem at all.

Love this Tape!!, September 22, 2011
By David Cabrejos
|
|
I just bought recently my first road bike. It's a cheap beginner bike made of aluminum, nothing fancy like carbon fiber and stuff like that.
Bought the bike from Amazon, and I love it so far! It's a Schwinn Men's Prelude Bicycle (BBWhite)
I was used to mountain bikes with front and rear shocks, and changing to a road bike without any, makes a huge difference on the road, since it will vibrate a lot!
The tape that came installed with the bike was horrible, and installed the wrong way. It was so uncomfortable and my hand started to hurt within 10 minutes even when wearing bike gloves.
I did my research and bought a "Fizik Bar Gel with Four Pieces (No tape)", which was really easy to install, even though the instructions were not the greatest. It helped improve a lot the road bike experience with these gels.
At the time, I had bought a "Fizik Bicycle Bar Tape", which I was completely disappointed. It looked so cheap and ugly looking, with no padding whatsoever. Some people do prefer that however. I think since I just changed from a mountain bike to road bike, I was used to being comfortable while riding my bike.
I bought this tape since it had good reviews, and I love it! It would stretch and not tear, if you make a mistake on installation, it's easy to fix it, and it looks beautiful! It was the first time installing a handlebar tape, found some YouTube videos on how to do it, and it looks like it was made by a professional, and installation was a breeze. (Will upload pictures later!)
The grip is really good and comfortable! Also liked the reflective bar plugs.
PS: Buy yourself a bike short, just got one and make a HUGE difference when cycling. Probably one of the best accessories I got so far! I got the Pearl iZUMi Men's Quest Cycling Short which was the cheapest and it's amazing! I can't imagine how the expensive ones feels like.

Good Product, But..., January 2, 2011
By Disappointed
|
|
This appears to be a good product but I will reserve my final judgement based on its longevity. I used it to replace the fabric tape on my 80's Bridgestone road bike. The cushion effect is much more comfortable. The problem, and it is a major one, is the vague installation instructions. I had to contact Planet Bike and got a reference to another website for a little better set of instructions. A major problem is that they say to start at the end of the bar and wrap towards the stem and then wrap it with the electrical tape provided. This is just another example of the crap that comes out of China. Any one who is familiar with electrical tape will know its limits under warm temperatures and frequent friction from your hands. (Duct tape might last longer.) I started at the stem wrapping the tape over itself out to the end and installed the plug. This is how the original tape was installed. They also give you two short pieces of bar tape that I couldn't figure out what to do with until I visited the referenced website. I ended up tossing these pieces and the electrical tape.

Great bar tape, August 27, 2009
By CATCH THE LIMIT, CULL THE REST

Never owned a road bike where I decided to install the bar tape myself. The tapes sticky backing is user friendly and forgiving if you need to rewrap the bar. Just keep the tape stretched as you wrap and you should be fine. Yellow shows the dirt but looks clean and accents the blue on the bike. Don't forget the bar end caps which are reflective besure to use a rubber mallet, makes things easier.

Plenty to Go Around & Around & Around, December 16, 2011
By A. Beard (Big Pine, CA United States)
|
|
Pros: Good price, lots of tape and plenty of color options. It's nice not coming up short for a change! They've removed the tape strip cover from the whole roll so you don't have to peel it off while you wrap.
Cons: Misleading marketing with the 'Cork color options'. Yes, it looks like cork, but the tape is soft and squishy without the firmness that cork implies. Reflective bar ends are downright cheesy but come off easily. As always the included end tape is worthless - buy yourself a roll of scotch or 3m electrical tape.

Good bar tape, December 14, 2011
By turboman (San Antonio, TX)

I have a blue road bike and orderd the blue tape. It complements the bike better than the old black color tape. I watched an instructional video on Youtube on how to tape the bars and everything went smooth the first time. The tape stretches easily and can be redone easily as well. I had a bit left over on each side and just wrapped this under some electrical tape. The tape provides a nice bit of padding and grip. It appears as if it should be durable but time will tell. I am very happy with this product and would recommend.

This product comes with the two rolls of handlebar tape, two 3-inch brake tape pieces, two pieces of 5-inch what looks like electrical tape, and the bar plugs. They give you plenty of handlebar tape, but not enough of the electrical tape for the finish; if you find that your taping job isn't how you'd like it, you'd better have some replacement electrical tape on hand.

Nice bar tape, July 6, 2011
By Cycle Commuter (Alexandria, VA, USA)
|
|
I ordered this tape to bulk up and soften the grip for my hands on the butterfly trekking bars I have installed on my Surly. I put it over foam that was already on the bars. One roll on each side, just as you'd expect with drop bars. The little pieces of tape included wouldn't have been sufficient for me to finish off the tape the way I wanted to, but I keep black electrical tape around (even have some in my little under-the-saddle tool bag), so not an issue. Besides that, good looking bar tape.
I haven't had this tape out in the rain yet, but I've ridden with some seriously sweaty hands, both with and without gloves, and I found the grippiness of the tape to be more than sufficient in those conditions. My hands will thank me on my longer rides in particular for having a little more padding there, and the foam underneat was knicked in a few spots, so this makes it all look shiny and new. They charcoal grey color will be good for not hsowing dirt, sweat, and grease, too. :) My floor pump, fenders and some of my lights are also from PB, and their stuff always seems to hold up well. I expect no less of this tape.

it totally is doing the job. Works great, and was easy to put on. you definitely need more tape then it comes with. but thats usually the case.

After looking through a few products I chose these because of the good rating. After receiving the product, I have to say I had no complaints. The grips were soft and easy to put on. Good product.

Comfortable for sure., November 5, 2010
By Steven M. Foote (Provo, UT)

I love new handlebar tape. This stuff is very comfortable and quite grippy. I rode in the rain the other day, and had no problems at all with my hands slipping. I like that they include the 3 inch strips for behind the hoods, as well.
Also, the back of the tape has a weak adhesive, to hold the tape in place while your wrap, but not so strong that you can't re-wrap. I've only wrapped a few times, so it was nice to be able to re-wrap and fix my mistakes.

Beautiful, October 26, 2010

This tape is perfect. I did not expect this tape to be this good for this price. It exceeds expectations. My rides are so much more comfortable and I look so much cooler with my Celeste tape.

good quality, included finish tape too short, October 24, 2010
By Matt (CO USA)
|
|
Happy with the quality and ease of installation. Feels good and worked well over the first 100 or so miles. Only downside was the length of the included finish tape. It barely goes around the bar more than once and seemed like it would allow the bar tape to unravel. I used stretchy black electrical tape instead and that is working well.

Padded dropped handlebar, August 14, 2010
By profelon (USA)
|
|
Although this imitation cork wrap functions well as described, it takes a bit of experience, practice to wrap in on properly. Too tight and you flatten the padding, too loose and you have more handlebar than wrap. I had to search online for instructions on how to wrap handlebar tape. After 2 tutorials, I proceeded with caution. The only issue I had was getting the end of the tape to look decent. I guess there is really no way to make it look seamless just like the beginning of the tape. If you have to trim the end of tape, trim the thinner edge, not the thick padding in the middle of the tape. That way it lays flatter if not all covered by the electrical tape necessary to hold the end in place.

Love It!, June 12, 2010
By Brooklyn (Virginia)

Easy to install. Cleans up easily. VERY comfortable. If you follow the instructions (stretching the tape as you go), there's way more tape provided than needed for both sides of your handlebars.

Great grips, November 29, 2009
By K. McCook

I'm very happy with these. They were easy to install, and they offer much more padding than my old grips. The color was a little lighter than I expected from the image - definitely tan or sand colored, not darker brown.

Good tape., October 1, 2009
By David Muir

I bought this tape and wrapped my bars with it. It was comfortable and pretty spongy. There could be a bit more tape in the box, but I my bars are a little big. I wiped out a week after wrapping it and tore it all up, I ordered a second package the next day.

Extremely lackluster when compared to the major companies., March 18, 2010
By C. Pallotta (New York, NY)
|

I hated this tape, took hours to install, and in the end it just looked disgusting. The instructions were extremely vague. This tape (or the red color at least) gets dirty fast, and mine looked pink. Go with a real brand, this stuff is too important not to.

whoops, May 26, 2012
By the scarecrow
|
|
at first i didn't like this product, it was too tight when I wrapped it and hard to get off when I tried to readjust it. Then, when I finally was able to loosen it a bit, it was so sticky that it pulled on the hair around my junk. Then i realized that the tape was for my handlebars on my bike and not my stork. Then I realized I loved this product. 5 stars!!!

works as it should. very easy to install/uninstall. so many colors to chose from.
i bought this tape to replace some old tape thats been worn thin on my old road bike. the box comes with everything you need except the scissors you might need to trim the excess at the end. it was easy to use and every forgiving to mistakes, if you make any.
