The Blaze 1/2 Watt LED Bike Light from Planet Bike lights up the night at an affordable price with a Nichia 1/2-watt LED bulb that's several times brighter than a standard white LED bulb. Ideal for commuters and regular night riders, the Blaze helps you see clearly at night while alerting drivers and other cyclists to your presence. This lightweight and efficient light uses just two AA batteries, reducing bulk and expense, and has up to 100 hours of battery life. Noted for its sturdy construction, compact design, strong light beam, and long life battery operation, the Blaze is a favorite of commuters and frequent riders. Equipped with a Quick Cam bracket mount as well as a helmet mount, the light installs, adjusts, or comes off in seconds without tools, making it a breeze to hop on your bike at a moment's notice. Designed to fit 25.4 to 31.8 millimeter handlebars, the Blaze offers both flashing and steady modes with a strong beam that is just as bright with rechargeable batteries as with alkalines. What's in the Box? Planet Bike Blaze 1/2-Watt Blaze LED Bicycle Light, helmet mount, QuickCam mount, two AA batteries Manufacturer Warranty Limited lifetime About Planet Bike In November 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, WI. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment. Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact. Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high-quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, the company strives to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short 10-year history, it has made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the four-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that 10 years ago started as a one-man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve its product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

Surprisingly Bright, November 21, 2007
By James C. Duncan
|
|
Over the last couple years I've accumulated several bike lights. Unfortunately, most lights under $100 are usually pretty dim and are usually more useful for being seen by car drivers than actually lighting up the road. Fortunately, with newer LED technology, inexpensive bike lights are becoming more capable. The Blaze is a big improvement over the Cateye EL-500 (LED) and the Planet Bike 5000x (halogen) that I have been using. The LED in the Blaze is brighter than both of those lights, its only drawback being that it is more of a spot beam than a flood. Depending on your needs, this can be a good or bad thing. I've found the Blaze very useful as a helmet mounted light to be used in addition to a handlebar mounted light with a brighter, wider beam. The Blaze is enough light to manage with on its own, provided you keep your speed below about 15 mph. It comes with both handlebar and helmet mounts and runs on 2 AA batteries. It appears just as bright with rechargeables as with alkalines.
All in all, the Blaze is an impressive little light, given its low price. For light that rivals a car's headlights, you'll still need to spend well over $100, but the Blaze proves that advanced LED technology is starting to trickle down into the really cheap lights, and that's a good thing. Even a year ago, it would have been impossible to find an LED light this bright for less than $50. Highly recommended for those on a budget or as an addition to a brighter light with a wider flood beam.

Nice Be-Seen Light, Intense But Very Narrow Beam/Spotlight, October 25, 2009
By Voiceover Guy
|
|
I like Planet Bike's products and bought the 1/2 Watt Blaze after reading a lot of reviews and doing a lot of hands-on comparisons in stores. Pro's: light weight, small, good build quality, easily removable (and works well as a handheld flashlight while removed), illuminates reflective street signs over a block ahead, surprisingly inexpensive, can be seen somewhat from the sides as well as front due to smallish'cutouts'in black plastic lens shroud, has good attention-getting flash mode, very bright to other's eyes if/when viewed directly head-on, throws a tight very narrow intense beam of slightly blue-ish LED light up to about 100-150 feet (your experience may vary). I would compare the brightness to a decent LED flashlight (with a very narrow beam). I haven't had it out in a real downpour but it seems reasonably built. Changing batteries is easy and fast. I'll review the handlebar mount mode only as I have a different LED headlamp on my helmet. Handlebar mount feels sturdy, tilts up/down.
Beam area is about three feet wide at 30-40 feet out, with a faint trace circle (but not much) of light outside that narrow beam. And will shift abruptly with each twitch of your handlebars.
Cons: Well, that narrow beam again. In city or suburban driving where you have some kind of streetlight presence as fill-in lighting, this would be a good choice to make you visible to drivers ahead of you. But on a dark trail (or a sudden patch between streetlights) you may find this is too narrow a spot and insufficient ambient light directly ahead of you, IE what you're about to roll over (or into).
For that, you may want (and I recommend) to get a good & inexpensive multi-LED headlamp(6 LEDs seems to be par right now, and perfectly adequate) to provide additional lighting to actually illuminate a dark road/trail ahead.
The 1/2 Watt Blaze is to let you be seen by drivers; the LED headlamp is so you can actually see the roadway ahead. In combination, pretty good for most needs.
One note: the on/off button is conveniently at the very top of the light but in the dark doesn't stand out & has to be found by Braille. I scotch-taped a little white mini-label on mine, makes it much more visible.
I'll be interested in comparing this 1/2 watt Blaze with the 1 watt version.
UPDATE. Soon after this review, I was able to exchange the 1/2 watt for the newer 1 Watt Blaze version (which uses the same mount as all other Planet Bike Blaze lights, mount-only available separately, so you can switch lights between bikes without changing mounts). The 1-Watt Blaze is not just twice as bright as the 1/2 watt; compared side by side, the 1 watt is 3 to 4 times brighter, cumulatively, with a pure white light, not blue-ish like the 1/2 Watt model, and both an objectively brighter and much larger circle of light (and a broader, better lit 'outer circle' outside the spot circle itself). The 1/2 Watt Blaze in flash mode emits a steady slower-paced one-two blink; the 1-Watt Blaze in flash mode is set to a much faster, more SuperFlash-like blink. You choose which would be more effective for your riding environment; I prefer the faster One-Watt to get driver's attention. For the few dollars difference, I definitely recommend the newer One-Watt--in performance, the 1/2 Watt can't compare . Bike light LED technology has hit a tipping point, and I'm looking forward to seeing the recently released Planet Bike Blaze, 2 Watt version.

Not your mother's night light..., November 21, 2007
By s0ckeyeus

|
This is a great light as long as you don't have unrealistic expectations; it won't illuminate the whole road or give you the brightness of the more expensive lighting options available. I feel plenty safe riding my bike at night with this light as it allows me to see reasonably well and adequately alerts those pesky car drivers that there is another vehicle on the road. The single 1/2W LED is much more powerful than any of the other 2-3 LED headlamps or flashlights that I own and the magnification produces a strong focused beam. Hardcore night-bikers might argue for much more expensive systems and the gadget gurus might insist on strapping on several more lights, but overall this is a well-constructed, practical light that will more than suit a good majority of commuters and more casual night-riders. For me, it's perfect.

Good price, great product!, October 1, 2007
By R. Ruiz Jr. (Austin, TX)

I bought an "affordable" LED light at a discount store and I must say I grew tired of it, the light was decent but it was heavy (4 AA batteries) and bulky. The answer is the Planet Bike Blaze, it's EASY to install, lighter (2 AA batteries), compact, and the light is brighter than my previous light. It can even be placed on your helmet. If you're looking for an fair priced product and great quality, I recommend this product.

another great accessory from Planet Bike, December 30, 2007
By adjective (place)
|
|
This company can do no wrong. So far, I've bought five or six different items made by Planet Bike, and all of them perform excellently. This new headlight continues the trend, replacing my older, still working light from the same manufacturer. Though somewhat bigger, it has the same sturdy construction as its predecessor, but there have been some small improvements, such as the improved mounting bracket and much-improved lens. It is also about double the brightness of the older light--more than adequate for urban use. Use this on your bike at night and you will be seen, and it does throw enough of a beam to illuminate the road in front of you if you're not traveling too fast. Definitely a light worthy of the name.

This little light does it all and doesn't hog batteries. Small, easily mounted, very bright with directed light. I gave it four stars not for this light, but for the engineers at Planet Bike..the 1 watt LED...is about the same price but with twice the illumination potential...only trouble is...the 1 watt does NOT have "blinking" capacity. As a cyclist, you want all your lights to have a steady mode and a blink mode..which is why I bought this. You can see the pics yourselves. It's a very good light. Highly recommended.

Good light but mounting options are lousy, April 27, 2009
By PDSF (SF, CA USA)
|
|
As others have mentioned, this is a very narrow spot light. This obviously has pros and cons. It is very bright for the price. I don't understand other commenters saying that it isn't bright. I will use it as a helmet light so the narrow focus is OK. However, the mounting options are lousy. The "cam lock" doesn't, that is, it doesn't hold the light in place. There is no detent to hold the cam in the "locked" position. The cam lever just slides open. So you couldn't mount this to your handlebar if you wanted to. The helmet mount isn't that great either. It has a flat rubber mounting surface, but the strap covers up the rubber and the flat surface probably doesn't match many helmets. If your helmet surface is ribbed (mine is), it will be cockeyed. This isn't a deal breaker, but I don't like it either. It would be better if the mount had little feet and the strap slid in between them. Anyway, not bad for the price but far from perfect.

Wow, a very good light, May 2, 2008
By Shi wah (Phiadelphia, PA USA)

I'm the type of guy who rides a bike every night and for the first time I feel like I found the perfect light ever. It's very small and lite weight. It has one LED light which is bright but not too bright. If you were going to go really fast in the dark, you wouldn't be able to see everything with this light but it is good enough for people to see you at a very far distances. The part that I love about this led light is that it only needs 2 AA batteries. So far I been riding for weeks and haven't had to change them yet, unlike my old light which needed 4 AA batteries and only last up one week. If you're looking for a light that doesn't take too a lot of power but still gives a strong light beam I would have to say that this is the one to get

planet bike blaze light, April 12, 2008

bright enough for commuting around town. the flash mode is a nice feature, & probably makes you more visible, while saving battery life. affordable, compact, easy to use. the negatives are with the helmet mounting: straps are not long enough to span 2 helmet slots, & the system does not have a swivel to adjust the angle.

Its ok...., April 18, 2008
By This IS Ricardo (North Hollywood, Ca)

The power of the light is actually quite weak. Its bright in dark places but in lighted areas the beam of light is deluted. The light only provides a beam of light so don't expect it to light up the whole street. On the plus side, if your use of the light is to get notice by motorist, this IS a good light. It provides excellent visibility for motorist.

not very bright, October 24, 2008
By Andy K

I commute daily to work. This light is not very bright. The beam is narrow. It slides on my narrow mountain bike handlebars. I spent about $125USD on a brighter and wider light. I recommend getting Planet Bike rear lights, but not this front light.

Great commuter light, December 16, 2008
By B. Kennedy (Chicago, IL)
|
|
This is a great light for commuting. I bike commute to work everyday in the Chicago neighborhoods. Cars on the street see this light very well. I can tell I am more visible with this light than my last one because I've had fewer close calls since buying the Blaze. I can see it reflecting back off of street signs over a block away. It's the perfect "be seen" light for its price range.

Very bright straight ahead, needs more to the side, October 15, 2010
By West Coast Paddler (Pacific NW)
|
|
This is a great headlight, either quick-flash (about 2-3 per second)or solid. I feel quite confident with this light (and various reflective bike and clothing bits) when night riding.
VERY bright. I've seen these coming at me and I can confirm when I see street signs flashing reflections 2-3 blocks down the road.
NOTE: the brightness is great for visibility of the bike by others coming head-on. It is NOT bright enough to actually light up a dark path for the cyclist. I.E. it is primarily a light to make yourself visible, and not one to light up the road ahead.
LONG battery life. I've had mine for a couple of years and still on the original batteries.
EASY to pack around - it's small enough.
Complaints:
- while exceptionally bright in a narrow cone straight ahead, it lacks in illumination to the side (i.e. to get attention of drivers on side streets). I'd prefer a more flattened oval light pattern.
- handlebar mount seems to work best on slimmer tubing. the locking mechanism is not as sure on wider tubing.

Solid Little Light, March 11, 2010
By M. Brockriede (Central Coast, CA)

The 1/2 watt LED isn't going to light up the whole night, but I guess that's what the pricier models are for. The Planet Bike website has a great page that illustrates the brightness of all their different bike lights, so check that out if you are unsure. For the price this is a great light. Installation was quick and shipping was super fast!

This is the light you want, March 12, 2009
By Billstei

This is a great light. I ride my bike every day, rain/snow/ice/wind/new-moon -- it doesn't matter, and it was -25 F back in January and this light performed like a champ. Double AA's means it runs longer between battery changes. Handle bar clamp is good (I don't use the helmet clamp) and On/Off button is solid. Looks fairly water resistant, but I have not had it in the rain (yet). Very bright. We are a family of 4 with 4 different bike lights, and this is the best by far.

Intelligent Design, February 21, 2009
By musical chemist (Houston, TX)

I just got this product, and I am a VERY satisfied customer. The light is very bright (especially for only 1/2 W), and it came with its own batteries!! The quick cam mounting design is very well done. It's very adjustable and has a firm grip on the handlebar. My previous light had a simple round bracket and screw, and it frequently became loose and caused the light to come down as I rode over bumps in the road. Planet Bike's quick cam mount is excellent, and I expect it to stay put for many bike rides. I'm also very pleased with a rear bicycle light I purchased from Planet Bike. I recommend their products to anyone.

Very Bright, October 2, 2008
By B. Gillespie
|
|
A friend of mine bought a $150 light similar to this one for his helmet and recommended it for night riding.
When I went to the Planet Bike web site, the light wasn't available. But this one was, and it looked pretty similar.
It's a great spotlight - really nice for aiming from atop my helmet to see details on the road ahead. In fact, on a dreary Seattle morning, I can see the light in front of me.
I'm quite happy with the power this light has. I haven't used up the first set of batteries yet, so I can't comment on battery life.

Not a headlight, September 4, 2011
By Andrzej Wierzbicki
|
|
This is a super bright indicator light. It has good battery life and seems to be reasonably waterproof. It mounts to the handlebars with a strap and a cam locker which needs to be tightened pretty hard not to slip--but once adjusted I didn't have problems with the light on my 31.8 handlebars--it would seem like it'd be a loose fit for 25.4, tho.
If you're looking for illumination, the beam is narrow and doesn't have a long reach for this to be a useful headlight.
I've seen lights like this around town when I drive and they're much more visible at long distances than traditional LEDs.

Some helmets must work better than others, March 3, 2010
By Alicia L Chandler (Erie, PA)
|
|
The light seems to be just fine. However, I had a very difficult time mounting this on my helmet. To get it to point where I wanted it, it had to be back at the midpoint of my helmet. The strap was almost too short for this, and I had to stretch it more than I was hoping for.
Updated on 4/2/2010: After using this for night riding outside of the city, the beam is really narrow and doesn't work well as a helmet light. It probably helps to be seen and works to look at my shifters and speedometer, but I can't really look around with it. This is disappointing since I bought it specifically for the helmet mount. I guess you get what you pay for and I'll probably upgrade in the near future.

This light is very good. The mounting system is so bad that I can't use it on the handlebars. It needs to be a fixed mount that is screwed down and permanent for the base. I won't buy another light like this.

I bought 2 of these to use on my beach cruiser. I mounted them under the front basket and when they're on I can't be missed. they provide adequate light to see with as a pair and in flashing mode it be really hard to not bee seen. I often use one flashing and the other not as the best combination of being seen and able to see.
A nice light.

Good for being seen, no good for lighting up the road, July 26, 2010
By R. Whitaker (Utah)
|
|
This headlamp is pretty much what I need it to be. A high intensity "HEY LOOK AT ME HERE I AM" light for the times I take a ride at night. My rides are mostly down lonesome country roads so I can't speak to how well this light works on city streets.
If you think you'll see that big pothole up ahead, think again. This light is no good for lighting up the road. The moon does a much better job. It suffers (of course) from that ghastly blue-white hue LED lamps emit. Still, it's lightweight, it attached just fine on my bike (yes the clamp is wonky but you should be able to make it work), and I'm pleased with it.

Brighter than expected but doesnt attach well, June 24, 2010
By Cameraman (New York, NY)
|
|
The light is way brighter than i thought 1/2 a watt would be, mostly due to the well designed lens. The flashing mode works very well - i see street signs more than a block ahead of me reflecting the flash. The attachment bracket seems well engineered at first, but when you try and put it on the bike it doesnt hold the light as firmly as I'd hoped. I have to keep an eye on the light while I'm riding to make road vibrations dont make it slip up or down.
The light is most useful for warning others of your presence, but not so much as a visual aid in pitch darkness.
The comparably high price is hard to justify in the end, though the product seems better than average.

Planet bike stuff is just good stuff. This light is really bright. It is a great light. I like the way it mounts to the bike.

Bike light is very bright for what you pay for it. It's perfect for mounting on a helmet and great for urban riding.

great light, at a great price., September 8, 2008

I was really impressed by the scope and brightness of this light, on the first night...and have come to love it even more, over a few weeks. It not only produces a strong and broad beam, but the battery life is quite long. I am a bike-commuter, and rely on my lights everyday. this one has not failed me yet, and it even got left on the bike in a couple of rainstorms. I just replaced the original batteries after 6 or 7 weeks of daily use.

average light marred by below average mount, February 7, 2012
By Terry Hutt (Running Springs, CA)

There are three types of bicycle headlights...
1. I want to see the road ahead and all the hazards so I can ride at full speed
2. I want to make sure oncoming cars and pedestrians can see me.
3. To be compliant with bicycle light laws.
This light does not fall into the first category. It's a half-watt light with a very narrow beam. Fair enough.
This light also does not fall into the second category. Its narrow beam means that only cars directly ahead of you can see it. Cars slightly to the side see almost nothing. In addition the poorly designed mount means that the light droops down and ends up illuminating the road 10' in front of you. Its a weird ratchet/screw/cam thing which is either too lose or cannot be locked into place.
Being as the handlebar mount is worthless I can only use it on my helmet. But I already have a better helmet light.
The only thing this is good for is being able to say 'See officer, I do have a legal front light.'

Improve the safety of night time riding, January 31, 2012
By Thomas E Kirkham

I attached this light to my helmet (with some difficulty, its mounting design wasn't compatible with the ventilation rib pattern of my helmet). Now in combination with a handlebar mounted light I have light directed to where ever I am looking and when I look at approaching cars the light on the helmet is shining directly at them which makes me much more visible.

Great little light. Will it get you through the Baja 1000 at night doing 100mph? Probably not. But it puts out pretty good light, good battery life and it get's me out riding at night away from the wife.(JK, Hon)

Great light, good battery life. More to be seen than to see, though. 1 on the handlebars and one on the helmet to flash drivers works well.

this light is nice, well built and stays on....so far. and it better for the price. i can tell the cheaper ones are not even close to this bad boy. the tightening mech is a little weird at first, it takes some time to get it right, but i got it....maybe it's just me

Bright light, April 2, 2009

For a small light, it lights up brightly and it's rays go a far distance. I know that any driver will not have a problem seeing me at night.

Good Light, March 10, 2012

Planet Bike makes good quality reasonably priced products. I bought one of these along with the Superflash tail light for my wife's bike and one for my road bike. Liked them both so much I bought a second set of mounting brackets for my cross bike so I can just swap lights between bikes. Planet Bike has excellent customer service as I know from past experience. This is a very good light for casual night cruising on city streets and trails at a moderate speed, higher wattages are available. It functions both as a strobe warning light and a headlight. Easy mounting, easily adjustable bracket fit all 3 bikes, takes 2 AA batteries which are easily replaceable.

An Amazing Little Bike Light, March 4, 2012
By Steve Vrana (Aurora, NE)

I've been road biking for more than ten years and logged more than 60,000 miles. I'm currently on my third bicycle (a Giant Defy) and have probably had at least as many lights. I bought this at my local bike shop and couldn't be happier with it.
It's about half the size of the first light I ever bought, so it's very compact. It installs very easily, and it is very easy to slip off the mounting bracket on those days you know you won't need a light.
I don't do any night time riding, but in the summer I do head out on the road before sunrise. I use the light not so much to see where I'm going, but to be seen. If you're looking for a light to allow you to see at night, you should be looking for something a bit more powerful than this half-watt model.
However, if your main goal is to be seen by motorists, this does the job amazingly well. On those early mornings when I'm rendezvousing with my partner (he has the same light), I can see him approaching at least a half mile away! Since I use this light primarily as a safety feature, I use the blinking mode exclusively.
Does it do the job? Well, I haven't been hit by a car yet. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
