About Planet Bike
In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment.

Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact.

Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Illogical setup aside, a good product, September 15, 2010
By kinezos
A frustrating product to set up, as to get the thing working READ THE INSTRUCTIONS but DO NOT follow the diagram. The key thing to remember is:
SENSOR MUST BE OUSIDE the shiny lines on the back of the wireless sensor.
It's illogical and conflicts with the diagram but set it up in this way and it works like a treat.

Mounting bracket could be better engineered as it does not sit very well on the side of my carbon road bike fork but has yet to move out of position.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  bikemaniac, September 13, 2010

I really enjoy the Protege whenever I go riding. The numbers are easy to read. The fact that it is wireless made it easy to install. I now know how far I have ridden or how much I need to go.It helps motivate me to ride a little further.

The Wireless computer works quite well. You only have to be careful the unit is not pushed and stock on the reset direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great and Affordable Bike Computer, August 24, 2010
By Hadad
Great bike computer. I like that all the important data is display at once. The only thing I can complain is that it is a bit difficult to remove the computer from the bracket.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Love This, but it's not perfect!, October 4, 2010
By Mealoa
It is a very good Bike Computer, but it does pick of signal from other things and sometimes registers a ridiculous speed that you could not possibly achieve, so it messes with your average. I might recommend a wired version.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Does the job well!, September 28, 2010

Great bike computer for the price. Bought a second one for wife's bike. Just wish it were backlit to be useful for the evening rides. This is a minor nit, but overall a great product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Accurate and a good display, September 27, 2010
By Ian McIntyre (San Diego, CA)
I like the Planet Bike Protege - this is the third one I have purchased and the first wireless unit. (The previous two are in use on other bikes.) A little bulkier and heavier than the wired versions, but nice to not have the cord threaded all around the front end of the bike. The clear display with all essential information on one large screen is the Protege's best feature for me. My one criticism is that the mounting bracket for the display unit is not compatible with new profiled handlebars, and I had to jerry-rig it with a zip-tie to hold it on. It is secure and not obvious to others, but properly engineered mounts for a variety of bar styles should be available to the buyer.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent but....., September 21, 2010
By Fernando Rosabal
This is the second unit I bought, now for my son and his new bike, I bought mine about a year ago, excellent the measurements in Kms, very accurate, sometimes la temperature vary, if the sun is directly over it doesn't show the exact temp, just how hot the sun is over him. The bad thing is that is not waterproof, last weekend a hole bunch of rain fell over me, the numbers start to disappear from the screen and then all the data was erase, it took me about two day with the hair blower to dry the computer and see if it works again.

I recommend this product, but try not to use it in bad weather conditions, otherwise, put some plastic bag on it so won't happen that all data is erase.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not as good as the wired version, September 20, 2010
By Wolf (Brooksville, FL)
I bought the wireless unit because my Planet Bike wired unit did not allow the magnet on the spokes to get close enough to the sensor on the fork leg on my new 29ner bike. The wireless unit attaches to the fork leg and has a swivel to allow the sensor to be adjusted so that it can come closer to the wheel spoke magnet. Unfortuneately I broke the sending unit the first time that I took the wheel off when I hit the wireless unit with the tire taking the wheel out between the fork legs. The swivel is held in with about 1/32 inch of plastic on the wireless unit and it just broke off. I never had a chance to see if the unit actually works. Busted it before my first ride. I made a small angle bracket 1/4 x 1/4 inch with stainless sheet metal attached to a washer that goes under my disc brake mount. I mounted the Planet Bike pickup sensor horizontally on this little bracket and my old Planet Bike computer works wonderful again. So much for my new wireless unit. That is what I get for trying to take the easy route. The sensor is protected by the brake caliper and won't break off even if you smack it with the tire taking the wheel off. I ran the wire from the sensor up with the hydraulic line from the brake caliper.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Affordable, Readable, Functional and Easy to use, November 3, 2010
By ShastaVelo
The Planet Bike Protege 9.0 is affordable, easy to read, functional and easy to setup. Right out of the box the directions were easy to understand making setup very simple. It not only takes the size of the tire, but the width as well into consideration for a very accurate reading. It allows for any size tire if you want to measure the tire using the ground method. The display is large, easy to read with all the pertinent information on one screen. You don't have to keep changing the screen to see the speed, ride time, distance, max and average. And yes, it even has the temperature.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Planet Bike Protege 9.0 Wireless Computer, October 28, 2010
By Mark S. Owsley (San Francisco)
I searched for a while to find a bike computer with temperature and a display that wasn't tiny. I can appreciate the look of a small profile on a bike, but when riding, I want to be able to actually read the display quickly. I was afraid it would be too big - it is the PERFECT size. I tend to keep it set on the display that shows speed, time, temp and elapsed trip time. Just what I want to know when I'm on my way to work and home. I could not be more pleased with this purchase, and now when I pass by the Cat-Eye computers in the store, I laugh and I'm so glad I bought the Planet Bike model instead. A bonus was the reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great product; very accurate!, October 24, 2010
By Emma J. Finch
I do 30 to 40 miles of bike riding on the weekends and I wanted a bike computer that could track my time, distance and speed. This product works wonderfully and it was not hard to set up. I like that I can see all the stats without having to reach down and scroll through screens. It is accurate and a good buy!
