4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Rack for Spare Tires with Covers, June 18, 2008
By Hoz (NW Pennsylvania)
We purchased this rack for use on a Chevy Tracker & Jeep Liberty. We wanted something that would be able to slip on/off without alot of tools and be able to be mounted on either SUV that we own without alot of hassle.
Both spare tires have covers and we wanted something that did not require mounting to one of the bolts holding on the spare tire.
This rack has been used several times in the last month and works great.
Another review on here stated they received the rack with just plain arms for sitting the bike on. Ours did come with the plastic cradles and rubber straps shown in the present picture of the rack and which are the newer model. (part# SR1-SA2)
The rack has remained tight on the spare tire ever since the original mounting. The only cons we noticed and this was mentioned on another review was that we did notice a small amount of rust after only a few days on the tightening bolts threads. Other than this, the rack has performed as expected and we would recommend this rack for anyone who has multiple vehicles with outside spare tires and might want to change the rack to the either vehicle without alot of hassle.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Be careful to not buy older version, August 11, 2007
By j garr (Ohio, USA)
I just purchased the SR1, as advertised here on Amazon and on Hollywoodracks.com. However, it is NOT the one in the photos on either site. The one in the photos has, I discovered, support arms that are new for 2007. Their part number is SR1-SA2 and they have the cradle and rubber straps to set the bike frame in. The prior support arms simply have a dip in the arm where you set the frame, so you have to figure out some other way to keep the bike from bouncing off the support arms. That part number is SR1-SA.

Apparently Hollywood Racks did not think to distinguish the new from the old model because they are both SR1. So, be careful what you buy because I'm not sure there is a way to tell which you are getting unless you open the box, since the model number is the same for both. (Looks like a convenient "mistake" that allows Hollywood to unload older merchandise on consumers!)

As to how the bike rack works -- not sure I'm going to even keep it, so can't say yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  spare tire rack, September 5, 2009
By Jean Faber (PA)
I had a Thule Spare Me bike rack for my Honda CRV, and I loved it, but when I bought a Toyota RAV 4. the Thule didn't fit. It took me a while to review the spare tire racks available, and I finally decided on the Hollywood SR!. It was easy to mount, and so far, I haven't had any problems, but it definitely isn't as sturdy as the Thule. I put a chain around it to attach it to the spare tire (which has a safety lug nut on it) to at least slow a thief down. Otherwise, it would be very easy to remove from the tire. If your car will take a Thule, I would recommend that, but the Hollywood is an acceptable rack if the Thule won't work.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Adequate, September 10, 2007
By Paranym (PA, United States)
This rack got my two, fairly heavy mountain bikes through a 900 mile road trip without breaking. I was a little concerned; it doesn't look all that sturdy, but it managed. It said it works with Jeep Wranglers, which it does, but it's a bit of a squeeze around the third brake light. Product is galvanized on the outside, but not on the inside. The first time it got rained on, rusty water drained from the tubing. It did the job though, and was a reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Hollywood Rack, November 14, 2008
By Andrew Ibarra (Corvallis, OR)
I used this bike rack to carry my road and mountain bike from Kansas City to Corvallis Oregon. Everything went great, of course I had also used bungees to strap the bikes tight for less up and down motion. But I think those only cost around $4.00. I would highly recommend this item to anyone the need to carry their bike around town or cross country. I have left it on since I have arrived in Corvallis, it rains a lot but I only saw a little bit of rust come out of the bike rack. Also I attached it to my Honda CRV which has a off set tire and this did a great job of offsetting the bikes to be directly behind the car for less drag. The set up of this does take about 5-10 minutes, so I leave my rack on there and bought a cheap cable lock to keep anyone from stealing it. A must bye for bikers who have the off set spare on your vehicle.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A great way to have bicycle portability and not get a hitch, January 2, 2011
By Guigsy (CA, USA)
I drive a RAV4 and while glancing through the offerings on Amazon for a bike rack I instantly noticed the demo video used a rav4. I also noticed that it didn't need a hitch. Friends with a RAV4 told me how they got a hitch and rack and all in all it cost them $300-400. After seeing the demo video it became clear that this is an all in one device that has the convenience of quick and easy dis assembly. I got it in the mail and it looked like the mailman had dropped it from a 12 storey building. However, due to the sturdy build of this rack and all its parts it didn't make any difference. It was perfectly in tact and after 15 minutes was mounted to my vehicle. I cannot speak more positively about how easy it was to install, how well it looks and how quick it will be to remove it when the time comes.

RAV4 owners, this is a must buy if you are in the market for a rack.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Difficult to mount on 2010 RAV4, July 19, 2010
By B. Miller (Northern Virginia, USA)
I purchased this rack based on strong reviews from other RAV4 owners to mount on my 2010 RAV4 Limited. I knew I would need to remove the outer hard spare tire cover, and accepted that as a necessary evil. Unfortunately, when I removed the hard spare tire cover, I found that it was still not possible to mount the rack securely. Mounting the rack requires that two straps run between the spare tire and the auto's body (in this case, the RAV4 rear door). The only way to accomplish this on my RAV4 was to remove the spare tire and the black plastic fairing that Toyota mounts on the rear door to protect it from the spare. With the spare and black fairing removed, I placed the entire rack (cushioned to prevent scratches) on the roof of the RAV4, ran the two black straps down the back of the door to the street, and then remounted the black fairing and the spare tire over the straps. In this way I was able to mount the bike rack securely as designed. The rack has worked well once installed -- the bikes seem to be securely mounted, and I see no other problems with it. I give it three stars because it is so difficult to install and remove -- the RAV4 is my wife's car, and there is no way she could install the mount herself.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  so so. i would not recommend, May 29, 2009
By MS (Boise, ID)
i guess i am picky but this item doesn't fit well with my 2003 Toyota rav4. i have a big comfy woman's cross roads bike and they do not fit on the bike rack. i did get the adapter and it didn't fit the rack either. second bike is very low to the ground and seem very unsafe to drive with. both poke on the sides of the car. tried it with a simple mountain bike and it worked well with just a common adapter bar. so i guess this rack is not suitable with a woman's bike with the big dip. am still looking for a special adapter bar for that. also, the rack is not straight on the spare tire and seems flimsy to me. will update soon

4.0 out of 5 stars.  excellent bike rack for a rav 4, May 9, 2010
By SeaHuntFan
There are not many bike racks that fit a Rav 4, this one is excellent. It is simple but effective.
You have to take off the spare tire cover, and be sure to rap up the pedal on the inner bike or it will scratch the rim of the spare.
Don't know how long the rubber straps that hold the bike frame to the rack will last, I would like to get some spares, but the rack is simple and excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A rack that fits an oversize Jeep tire, March 30, 2009
By R. Salcedo (Orlando Florida)
I purchased this bike rack for my 2004 Jeep Wrangler with 32x11.5 tires. This fits snuggly on the tire. It should fit 33x12.50 but no larger than that. The front of the rack droops a little with the weight of a beach bike and a mountain bike but it isn't bad at all. I just tightened up the straps. Overall I would rate this 4 stars and would recommend this item.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike Rack, October 10, 2008
By Glenn Marsh (Sacramento, CA)
I have a Jeep Liberty and I like this bike rack because it is easy to put on and remove. It securely attaches to the spare tire and when I'm done, I just take it off and it flattens out so I can store it away easily. Great price, quick and easy installation... I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I Love It!, February 7, 2010
By Scott Turner (Portland, Oregon)
I have a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited - with a stock spare tire - and this rack fits perfect! Installation is totally simple - and stable. I really like the minimal design, and I don't feel like anything is missing. It does the job I need it to do perfectly. Some people have pointed out that the rack could be stolen by anyone with a wrench. This is true. However, if you are worried about that, the rack and bike could be locked to the spare - using something like the following:

Avenir Coil Combo Cable Locks (10mm / 6 feet)

Be sure to use the provided straps to secure the bike on the rack. Also, use the longer straps to keep the bike wheels from rotating while driving - and to secure the bottom portion of the bike against the rack (so it doesn't swing in the wind).

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Bike carrier for 4x4's, November 22, 2009
By M. Wright (Hawaii, USA)
This is my second Hollywood rear tire carrier. I had the original one for 15 years (it never died) and I just replaced it because the new one does everything better. It is a snap to install, fits bigger tires and holds the bike even on rough roads. Its made by a small american company and is well engineered. It can offset for non- centered tires. It doesn't deal with my sloping top tube but neither do any of the other racks. You could tilt it a bit when mounting to get a tad more balance. Great american product!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Stinks. Great way to screw up your bike., June 30, 2010
By SmL (Richardson, TX United States)
Used this on a jeep wrangler, properly assembled, nothing out of the ordinary. Unstable as the jeep bounced down the road, straps came loose, arms holding bikes folded. $1200 bike incurred major paint scrapes. TOTAL PRODUCT FAIL, IMO.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Very satisfied, October 1, 2011
By Mountain Mama (Wyoming USA)
This product is very well made and oh so easy to install. Other spare tire bike racks require removing the spare tire first (not something I would like to do). This product went on in a few minutes and is securely mounted. I am very happy with this purchase. One hint ...just slide the straps (that go behind the tire)in from the side and wiggle them around to behind -- this is much easier than trying to thread them down from the top.
:o)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  It's Great When Thigns Actually Work Well & As Advertised, August 20, 2011
By Stewart
I buy 95% of my purchases online at Amazon. They are reliable and trustworthy. Plus I hate shopping in crowded stores unless absolutely necessary like at Whole Foods for food etc.; plus our sales tax is the highest in the Nation. Not to mention gas prices to drive to 1-3 stores to find each item. Nope, not for me. My time outside of work and my profession is to enjoy. Shopping at AMZN makes that possible; let UPS or FedEx do the driving.

I received this for my older model CR-V with a rear tire and tire cover. I also bought a new/used Trek hybrid bike after not having a bike for past 3 years. I needed to get back in shape after some recent hospitalizations; and lifting the bike into the rear of the SUV and needing to take off the quick-release wheel was was a pain. This product worked 100% as promised. It is first rack I ever purchased for a rear tire, as previous vehicles needed a hatch rack. Fits well and was easy to install. Only need a wrench or pliers. It is very sturdy but not too heavy. It works perfectly on my new tire cover (also purchased from AMZN earlier this year) without tearing it. You slip it on, figure out how to connect the straps (takes about 18 minutes) and you are ready to go. My item came with the additional rubberized "straps" to secure the bike to the rack. These are prefect and easy to hook and unhook. I use the extra length of the "tire straps" (they are longer and therefore you have about 2-3 feet of excess strap after connecting them as shown in the video.) This turned out to be a good thing as I use this excess to tie the bike to the rack for added support. The product video on the AMZN website and description does not state that there will be extra length of tire straps that will need to be tied, so they do not drag. I also lock the rack to the vehicle with a new cable lock so a thief does not take it since it does slip on and off with only a few adjustments to 2 bolts and releasing 3 tire straps. By the way I have a off-center rear tire but did not need to adjust or center the rack. I also did not need to take off the front bike tire. It only extended beyond the passenger side of the car by 6 inches or less.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Serves the purpose, July 26, 2011
By hwayne99
The Hollywood Rack was easy to attach to the rear tire and so far has served the purpose it was intended for with no problems. My only minor complaint is that it would be much easier to attach two bikes if there was a little more room between the two cradles. Other than that it has worked just fine. However I have not tried it on a long trip as yet, just short ones to a bike trial.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for my needs, July 13, 2011
By Ellen
Ordered this rack as the pictures show it fitting both a Wrangle and Rav4. Put it on my wranger two weeks ago without help from my husband. I did have to loosen the spare tire as the rack did not slip between the tire and the over tire mounted brake light. No need to take the spare off (as I mistakenly did), just loosen and slip it forward. Rack fits securely and bikes ride securely. This fall I'll try it on my Rav4. Very pleased with this purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  hollywood bike rack A+, February 16, 2011
By jewel
I like the bike rack a lot. I have it on the back of my Roadtrek. It fits securely and attaches very easy to my spare tire. The bolts do rust immediately tho. I had read that in another review so I immediately rubbed the bolts with white lightning lubricant. I wish that Hollywood would make a spare tire rack for 3 bikes tho. Very impressed with the company also. I emailed Hollywood two times with questions, and they emailed back within a day! All in all, good product.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  An awesome bike rack., August 21, 2010
By Mike in Downingtown (Downingtown, PA)
I've owned many Thule and Yakama racks and the Hollywood rack compares very favorably. I had 2 large adult bikes, one womans frame, that rode on this for about two thousand miles on a New England tour. In all those miles I had no problems with the rack. The womans frame took a few minutes to figure out the best fit, but it was fine once I found the "sweet spot". It was great being able to open the rear door without having to do anything with the bikes. It did no damage to the spare and the bikes literally did not shift an inch while driving. We watched them in the mirrors and could not believe how steady they were. It was relatively easy to install (no rack is really "easy" in my opinion). The only damage came to one bike from rubbing against the other bike, but this was really because of the way we had strapped/locked them together where the derailleur of one rubbed the fork of the other. This will happen with any rack that hangs bikes and can be easily avoided with careful placement or padding. Overall, this is an outstanding rack and a bargain compared to the alternatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy Li'l Sucker!, June 8, 2010
By ECU Pirate (NC)
I bought this thing a while back before the beginning of summer to hold my (1) mnt bike. I drive an '09 Jeep Wrangler 2 dr, and this baby snugs to the spare. Upon stripping the top for a beautiful day, my buddies talked me into taking the Jeep to our riding spot. (which happens to be the gorgeous bikers paradise of Dupont State Forest in Brevard NC). Not only did I drive, but we loaded all the bikes on this thing! And by 'buddies' I mean two of them and myself! This rack carried (3) full sized mnt bikes on a bumpy 50 minute roundtrip with no problems. Now mind you, I laid into the straps to tighten them with all my force and prayed the whole way... but SHE did the trick & I won't be reluctant to test her again. (maybe with just (2) bikes next time, like its designed to do.)
Hope this helps!
God Bless

If you are considering this bike rack then also consider a tire cover to protect your spare tire because you will surely scratch you rim with the bike peddles. Good product. Seems durable, easy to put on and take off. Enjoy the outdoors!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  So far so good, May 20, 2009
By A. Lang
I bought this for use on our 2001 Chevy Tracker. It was very easy to attach and it fits perfectly over the spare (size P205/75R15). We had to move the bars as we have a side mounted spare and it is factory assembled for a center mount.

The screws stripped quite a bit so if one plans on changing the set-up much, an investment in better quality screws would be a good idea. Otherwise, it looks and feels stable. Haven't as yet put bikes on it but we will be doing so this weekend (surprising our soon-to-be-kindergartner with a new bike). I will update this review after we've used it.

As a side note, this did come with all of the mounts and straps shown.

Update since use. We have used the bike rack several times. Easily mounted and bikes remain secure. Very good mechanism for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Just what I needed, May 23, 2011
By J. Alex Kirkpatrick (Colorado)
I always wanted a bike rack for my spare tire, however since the tire is off center from my car I was worried about the bike hanging out past the edge of my car. This move keeps them close enough to the center that I don't have to worry about them. The rack fold up nicely so that I can leave it on my car. There isn't a lock on the rack, but it is easy enough to run a cable lock through the mount for my tire and through the bikes. My only real complaint is that I wish I could take it on and off easier, but since it folds up this is a very minor issue. I haven't used it on any long drives yet, so I can't speak to how well a bike will stay on for more than about 30mi at a time.

The metal part of the rack is not large enough to touch the bottom side of the spare tire therefore the rack is not supported at the bottom. At the top it has a good way to mount to the tire. Cannot use it on my Jeep. My tire size is 275R70 X 16. The mfg should state the hieght of the rack.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Won't work with all bikes, May 2, 2012
By Bill G (Louisville, KY)
Product seems well constructed and solid. Easy to put on but be warned, if your bike has the Schwinn Cruiser style curved top bar then it won't be able to hang on this rack. It only fits the more common triangle frames used on most 10 speed bikes. My bike is an inexpensive cruiser that we take along on back of the RV for running around the campground so I can just get another one at WalMart for 90 bucks that will fit this rack, otherwise I'd have to return the rack.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good product for money, April 27, 2012
By ILYA
This is a first bike rack I've purchased. I'm satisfied with this product. It's easy to install and very easy to take off (good in case going to automatic car wash). Made out for metal. not plastic. I also like fordable arms, which hold the bikes. If they are not in use, there is nothing sticks out from the rear tire.
As a suggestion: it would be nice to have a clips or the way to pack excess from the mounting belts (the ones which keep the rack attached to the spare tire).

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great on a Rav4, March 29, 2012
By girishc
I needed to remove the spare tire cover to fit this. It was slightly confusing as to how to use all the different straps. I still have one that I have no use for. The bikes fit fine and dont vibrate. I did a 300 mile journey with the bikes attached and it worked out just fine.

One negative is that the metal parts are already showing signs of rust, so I am not too thrilled about that, however does not seem to affect its performance in any way.

I have a 98 toyota Rav4, and this bike rack worked very well. I was able to put it on quickly by myself, all I needed was a wrench to tighten the screws. Very happy with this bike rack. Drove for 15 hours to South Carolina with it, and back, and had no issues.

Thanks!

It arrived quickly. Very simple to install, I have a 2002 Honda CR-V. I moved the arms over to center the bike. Good fit on the little Honda and the bike is centered perfectly, the bike tires only stick out a couple of inches on both sides. I'm happy with the purchase.

I have just good thing to say about Amazon and about Hollywood Racks Company!!!!

First I thought I had to return the rack because did not fit in on my spare tire so start the process to return (which was soooo easy), than the next day I decide to call the Company that sells the rack. They were amazingly friendly and helpful. I cancel my return and Hollywood track said that they would send to me the tools to adjust the size of my tire or I could drive by (since I live in LA)... Sam was amazing, so helpful. Bottom of line....really happy with the company and product!!!
