4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nothing special, but decent steel, August 28, 2008
By New England Yankee (Northern New England)
Typical design - a screw mechanism pushing a pin, the chain held in slots. The only way these tools differ is in the quality of the materials, fit-up (e.g., slop in the screw mechanism), comfort of the handle, etc. The Park is better than most, as it's made of good steel and the screw handle (typical Park tool vinyl dip) won't slip. The grip handle is significantly better than similar tools, however, as it is nice and wide. Compare other tools with a simple steel rod handle.

If you have a really stiff link, rather than pushing the tool to the limit - possibly bending or breaking the tool's pin - give the link a good shot of penetrating oil and let it sit for an hour first. Most of the frustration with chain tools comes from situations like this or from using a light-duty, emergency tool more suitable for a bike bag tool kit.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Incorrectly described, June 17, 2010
By D. Vu (Perris, CA)
Despite what the description says, this does not fit wide 1/8" (nor 3/16") BMX/track single speed chains. This is made for narrow chains for 7/8/9/10 speed. If you try to put a 1/8" in this tool (on the incorrect shelf, it won't fit in the correct one), it will bend the chain, effectively destroying it unless you can manage to save it with a "master link" system.

For 1/2" x 1/8" or 1/2" x 3/16" BMX/track single speed chains, use the Park Tool CT-7. Only purchase this one for geared bikes.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Review PARK CT-3 heavy duty bicycle chain pin remover, November 2, 2010
By Gene D (North Carolina)
This bicycle chain pin remover is larger and heavier than the average bike chain pin remover. It is much easier to operate than the smaller pin removers. It's too large/heavy to carry on you bike ride but great for keeping in your vehicle or at home. So, you may want to use the smaller pin remover for carrying on your rides.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Toss out that cheap chain tool - this is the one to get, March 4, 2011
By Timazon (Hauppauge, NY USA)
I've used an inexpensive chain tool for years, but decided to spring for the Park Tool CT-3.

The difference is night-and-day. This tool is very high quality, rugged, and drives the chain pins effortlessly.

Yes, it's expensive, but it's worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Awesome chain tool, August 30, 2011
By Magnus Gille
I've owned a few different chain tools and most have been light weight crap and hard to operate. This one feels robust, is heavy weight and pops the pins in and out easily. The construction of it makes me believe it will outlast me.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  HEAVY, July 25, 2011
By crabit
Great tool but I found it too heavy for the trail, which is where I always need it. But for your shop or work bench, it's superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent tool, May 22, 2011
By jkp (Chicago)
Excellent quality, easy to use. Park sells a much more expensive tool for high end 10-speed chains, but this one worked perfectly on my Shimano 7901. Not suitable for a seat bag, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Simplicity in a Necessary Home Mechanic Bike Tool, November 1, 2011
By RiderLooney (San Diego, CA)
My last chain tool broke and I had to purchase a new one as I chose Park Tool's CT-3 model. When I received it, the make-up of it was so simple, but much more durable than what I had before. The extra beneficial addition too to this model, is that if and when the chain link tip of the tool just happens to break, CT-3, as well as some of their other models, can be replaced. This means, the consumer does not have to buy a whole new one like I had to! I know this chain tool will last me the rest of my biking life-LOL!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good quality, annoying system., December 12, 2011
By A. M. Garcia (Austin, TX)
I haven't used any other chain tools, so this isn't a comparison.

This tool is of high quality. The rubber handle and metal body both feel solid and great. It is also quite nice that the tips are replaceable, but that is a large portion of the problem.

The tips break easily, possibly due to the mounting system. When you buy this tool, you're buying into the system. I just wish it was better.

After replacing the tip, I got it done though.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  comfortable, does the job, September 9, 2011
By Chinaman101
Decided on this after looking at flimsier looking models. This one feels solid, and the handle is comfortable. Popped out a couple of chain pins on my 10 speed shimano with ease.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best for handyman repairs, January 17, 2012

This is a must have tool for maintaining a bicycle. I use it a lot and it's held up better than any other chain tool I've used yet.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  High Quality Tool that came in very handy, December 30, 2011
By E. Plautz
I decided that it was time I tuned up my own bike as opposed to paying someone else $100+ in the Chicagoland area to overhaul my bike for me.

This tool, along with some degreaser, and a new chain certainly helped me quickly make my bike run "like new". The tool makes it very easy to remove the chain and overall, helped me feel more comfortable about doing my own bike maintenance.

I would strongly recommend this to anyone ready to try their hand at bicycle maintenance.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Pin Broke Somewhat Easily, But..., December 25, 2011
By Kyle
this is an overall sturdy and high quality chain-breaker. Only problem is you have to be careful with the angle of the pin. Love it otherwise.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  broken, October 4, 2011
By BikeMech83
I've used this tool 3 times with the utmost care. Upon the third usage I noticed the pushpin would no longer line up properly with the chain link's lock pin. Shortly thereafter, the pushpin snapped off, rendering the entire tool useless. I have a portable roadside chain tool that has lasted 3 years and multiple uses, this is very disheartening for all the other as of yet unused Park tools that I own and recently ordered..

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Stop buying junk., May 7, 2012
By Rail Spy
I've been buying garbage chain tools for all of my bicycle career (at least 6). Finally bought myself a REAL tool and will have it for life. Don't waste your $ on junk, just buy a Park tool and be done with it!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Replaceable pins are great -- QA, not so much, April 28, 2012
By Zombie (Sunnyvale, CA)
I had a mini chain tool for years and it did the job. I didn't use it very often so it seemed adequate. All it really has to do is push out a pressed-in pin from the chain. But now that bikes are so high-tech and expensive, I decided to get a little better chain tool.

The first tool delivered had a crooked pin. When you rotate the handle, the pin wobbled. The pins are replaceable which is a good idea. I didn't have any. I suspect it was the pin hole that was crooked. This is the most important part of the tool so I returned it as defective. Amazon had a replacement tool out to me within a couple of days -- great!

This tool has a loosening shelf which you use to slightly separate links that are too tight -- which a link will be after you press it back together. A lot of people recommend just bending the chain at that link but that is not such a great way to do this.

As with so many Chinese tools, you do the QA. That said, this is still a step up from my old mini chain tool. With replaceable pins, it will last a lifetime.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Chain Breaker, April 26, 2012
By Burto
What do I think of my new Park Tool USA Professional Chain Tool CT-3, 10-Speed Compatible It is more robust than other breaker tools which makes it easy to use only disappointment is there is no indication how far you have pushed the pin out if there was a scribed line on the tool to show when you were deep enough it would make a good tool GREAT

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Works like a charm, April 17, 2012
By Stuart
Everyhing I've purchased from Park Tools has been high quality. I've used this with both 10 speed and single speed chains. The chains pins pop out in a matter of seconds. This tool is extremely easy to use. For anyone who likes to work on their own bike, this tool is a must have.
