2.0 out of 5 stars.  Good chain. Bad lock., August 8, 2009
By Musical Theatre Performer
This chain is great. It would keep my bike safe from most theifs. But the disc lock is terrible for locking up chains. With the disk lock, the hook of the lock goes into the lock itself. Therefore, you have nothing to hook the chain on to! You are stuck trying to grip to ends of the chain, holding the two links in the perfect position to allow the lock's latch to slide into. And you have to balance the lock in place. While all that's happening, you then must turn the key to bring the latch outside of the lock and through the two chains.

If you want the chain, buy it. But also buy a different lock, unless you want to be seen struggling for 2 minutes every time you want to lock up your bike.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  The chain is okay, but the lock is a dud., August 18, 2010
By b
I lost the key to my chain/lock set, so I went to the locksmith to see if a new one could be made. Since it was locked, he wasn't able to make a key. He offered to cut the lock for a few bucks. I figured it'd take a little while since it was a Kryptonite. Wrong. In literally 5 seconds, he had clamped on a big pair of bolt cutters and snapped the lock. It surprises me that a major company like Kryptonite would produce such an easy to cut lock in this day and age. As other reviewers have pointed out, the chain is fine (albeit a bit short), but upgrade the lock if you live in a high theft area. Yes, the set is pretty cheap, but a better lock will be cheaper than buying a new bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Uber chain, May 9, 2009
By zumazon (Tejas)
This Padlock/chain combo is great. It's heavy duty and quick to use. There isn't much fumbling around.

The only drawback is that it's a short chain.

For the price and utility this product is awesome! It'[s a great value.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Terrible chain, September 24, 2010
By Kile
I purchased this product to lock my $50 bike in a medium sized city. Within two months of using it, this chain was cut by a thief. They even left a severed chain link so I know it was the chain that was cut.

The lock is also very difficult to attach onto the chain, since the shackle retreats into the lock housing, but I believe this was done purposefully to reduce length of exposed shackle. Lot of good that did, since the chain was severed easily.... Stay away from cheap chains!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Short Chain, February 9, 2010
By Michael
I just got this chain last night, so I haven't tried it in the field, yet. But I just wanted to point out that the chain is pretty short (30 inches). It's really too short to wrap it around your bike tires, frame AND a pole or rack -- It just doesn't have the length.

Probably works best as a supplement to another chain or lock. As someone else mentioned, the padlock is kind of hard to loop into the chain links, the way it's designed. For another option, look at the Abus Steel-O-Chain 880. It has a lock integrated into the chain itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good alternative to a u-lock, October 3, 2010
By chuanha1
Moderately priced u-locks aren't very reliable. I can't speak to the really expensive ones (never owned one) but the last $40 one I had literally fell apart in less than two years. A chain and a padlock may be less secure, but they're more reliable and more flexible. This chain is the same length as a large u-lock, but you can get it into more awkward spaces. I agree the padlock is a little awkward to operate at first, but I got used to it quickly. Great for commuting, where my bike is in a garage at home and at work. But I wouldn't rely on it to keep an expensive bike safe outside overnight.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  So far so good, May 25, 2010
By Cebert Currie (Miami Beach, Fl)
I like this lock. Its definately solid. Links are thick. Over 1/4 inch. The worst thing about the lock is something that another review mentioned which is that its not the easist thing to get the chains in the lock because to close the shackle you need to turn the key. Creativity takes care of that problem though. I just turn the shackle so its partially out then slide the second chain in and finish turning the lock.

If I had to rate the weak point of this lock and chain set its the lock in my opinion. The positive is that the exposed portion of the shackle is minimal and the chains cover most of it, forcing you either to be very detailed at getting bolt cutters to the lock or attack the chain. The fabric covering over the chain adds more than looking nice, its an additional deterant. It basically makes it more difficult to cut plus makes it more difficult to get a good leverage on the chain to cut the chain link.

In all this is a vital portion of my bike's security system. Especially for those of you out there like me with expensive bikes, or high target bikes, be smart. This lock shouldn't be the only lock. It should only be a portion of your locking system. For me my locking system includes this, a Master Lock Street Cuff (purchased on Amazon, see my review), and a Bell 'U' lock and cable. I trust this lock, but more than that I trust that I have 3 locks, with three different methods of being defeated. All locks eventually have weak points and weaknesses, your system's best strength is the amount of time to completely dismantle/disable your locks, and this lock will add to that time.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Not too shabby...., July 15, 2009
By David E. Walter (Portland, OR)
It's a pretty nice lock, heavy duty and looks like it would be hard as heck to bust apart or cut in any way. It's a bit heavy but I knew what I was getting based on the product description(3lbs).

My only real gripe is that it is kind of hard to lock as you have to fit a link through a link and turn a key while catching the open ended link with the rotating lock. Kind of hard to describe but tricky to do with just two hands(you three handed people will have no trouble with this lock:). I still think for the money it was a good buy and hopefully I will eventually get the hang of locking it quickly(owned for about three months now with moderate use).

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best lock, March 29, 2010
By feffrey feffers
This is a great lock that will keep your bike secure.
If you just need to lock your frame this is a great lock.
It the chains are heavy and stong, and the lock is great too.
The keys turn great and easily, so no worry about the key breaking off inside the lock. (had that happen on $70 bike lock before)
This is a great bike lock that will keep your bike safe and sound.

P.S. For those who have a hard time locking the chains with lock maybe you shouldn't be riding a bike if you can't do something this simple.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good so far., September 22, 2009
By Desimondius
Not too heavy for a heavy duty chain due to its short length. The lock setup is a bit fiddly, and the cloth sleeve keeps sliding around. Probably the best value for this type of lock.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Needs Finessing, but Otherwise Functional., April 13, 2011
By Talia (Brooklyn, NY)
The hackle on the padlock is so short - I understand that is a theft deterrent, but it increases the amount of time that it takes for me to lock/unlock my bike, in itself a security risk of another nature.
I like the flexibility of the chain though, it's better than my old U-lock, I can stuff it in to smaller bags more easily, and the nylon sleeve over it helps protect the chain from nicking the paint on my bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great chain, complicated lock, March 3, 2011
By flomo
This item arrived super promptly and is as sturdy as I was hoping. Problem is the lock is really tricky to use, I'm afraid of how long it'll take me to get used to it!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Chain too short!, January 21, 2011
By artboston4life
The chain is very heavy and too short if you're trying to lock your bike to a crowded bike rack, where you need some length to maneuver. Lock itself is good, but chain is way too short! Might be good if you're trying to lock something (like a grill) to a narrow post right next to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for a quick run to the deli or laundromat, January 3, 2011
By Myung J Hahn (NYC)
I use this chain when I zip in and out of places in NYC like a deli run, really lightweight and easy to transport. But I strongly recommend you use both chain and u-lock. Never leave this chain on for over 15 minutes or you will lose your bike. If you plan on leaving the bike out for a longer period of time I would look into other options.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Broken Key, April 6, 2012
By D. Brown (Oakland, CA United States)
Had this lock for a year and a half now. Suddenly the key broke in the lock. Luckily there is another key provided, but it probably won't last long since it is made of cheap metal. If it is made in China, no wonder. That country's steel sucks! If you key breaks in the lock you can remove it with WD-40 and pair of tweezers or needle nose pliers. Since purchasing this lock I have seen many replacement locks go up on the shelves for this model. Doesn't take a genius to figure it out why. Pass on this to buy another lock.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Chains are very heavy, so their strength to weight ratio is very poor., April 21, 2012
By SKB
The chain and lock shackle is easy to cut and the lock can be picked fast.
Note: >(A 10mm chain is 2.5 times heavier then a 13mm bar.)
The 5006 U-lock is 3.55"x5.52"x13mm at 35oz.. To enclose the same area with a 10mm security chain, it will take 21" of chain at 10.5oz. heavier with no lock. If the U-bar were 18mm instead of 13mm, it may still be lighter then the chain with a lock.
It takes a lot of materail to make a chain-link, so there is little to cut through to brake it. Chains are very heavy, so their strength to weight ratio is very poor.
Linking U-bar locks together, maybe better then a security chain. Less links = less wasted material or a bigger bar to cut.
The best lock is a U-bar lock! A good U-bar lock has to be cut twice to fail, like a chain-link. Use one to secure the rear wheel to the bike and one to secure the bike and wheel.
