5.0 out of 5 stars.  Use it correctly, and you will be rewarded, October 8, 2008
By SpartanBuff (East Lansing, MI USA)
Some people have issues with this cable being easily cut, which leads to their bike being stolen. I want to set the record straight about this product and proper locking methods. These cables are by no means meant to be your sole locking device, but rather, they are meant to be used in conjunction with (ideally) a U-Lock. I work in a bike shop and attend school at Michigan State, a virtual candy store for bike thieves, and as such proper locking is imperative. First off, buy yourself a good U-Lock. I would recommend going with the Kryptonite brand, as they are THE name in bike locks. I myself use what Kryptonite calls the "Fahgettaboudit" which is an 18mm-thick, vinyl-coated monster that would make New York's most proficient bike thieves shudder. THIS IS WHAT YOU USE TO LOCK YOUR BIKE TO THE STATIONARY OBJECT, not the cable. Put the U-Lock through the frame and through the stationary object. You then use a cable (I reccommend a seven or four-foot KryptoFlex, again, for the same reasons) to act as a secondary security device and, more importantly, SECURE YOUR REMOVABLE COMPONENTS (such as a quick-release wheel or seat). Before closing the U-Lock, put one end of the looped cable onto the U-Lock, then loop the cable through your wheel and seat supports. Put the other end of the looped cable onto the U-Lock, close the U-Lock, and walk away whistling, because your bike is now un-stealable. That is the proper application for these cables.

Okay, so now to actually review the cable. It's amazing. You cannot top Kryptonite's quality, and it is very useful. It is also just as resistant to cutting as any other cable you'll find. Top-notch durability

Now, there's no doubt that when people walk past your bike, with cables snaking through it like some kind of evil invasive weed, and a five-pound U-Lock hanging off the side, they'll be thinking "Man, this guy (or girl) is really obsessed with bike security." But, hey, isn't that the point?

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great cable, May 11, 2010
By Mark in Tempe (Tempe, AZ USA)
I bought all three 525 (5mm x 2.5'), 1004 (10mm x 4') and 1007 (10mm x 7').

Amazon seems to apply reviews of any of those products to all three products. So, be careful to understand which product a review applies to. For example, the 525 is a nice leash to keep your seat from walking away (while you step into a convenience store). But, it would take small wire cutters for a thief to cut. (Not a cable to use to keep your front wheel secure to a u-lock.).

The 1004 and 1007 models, at 3/8" diameter, is thinner than Avenir's 1/2" (12mm) x 7' cable. And, more expensive than the Avenir. Obviously, a little lighter to carry. But, perhaps less of a deterrent. Even though we're only talking about 1/8" difference, 3/8" tends to be the limit of smaller (concealable/affordable) wire-rope cutters. Having a 1/2" diameter cable could slow down a thief using smaller wire-rope cutters. Or, make a thief using the correctly-sized cutters draw more attention to himself (cutters to cute 1/2" wire rope are pretty large.).

I see people rate cables low because their bike was stolen. Everyone needs to realize that a cable is not adequate security except in low-theft areas. And even then: only for a quick trip inside a convenience store (to prevent the bike from being picked up and carried away). For everything else, you should use a U-lock. (Use that to lock the rear wheel through the chainstay/seatstay tubes to a bike rack). The cable should be loopped through the front wheel, seat and rear rack. Most thieves won't go to the trouble of cutting a cable just for a seat or front wheel. (More expensive front wheels have quick release axles and you're better off putting the front tire next to the rear tire and through the U Lock if you want more security than a cable.).

Riding around, I'm amazed at how many bikes I see that are secured incorrectly. Bikes left at bus stops, locked with a cable. Or, U Locks through a front wheel. Those people increase my security because thieves will target those bikes because mine would be too much more difficult.

When you use the right tool for the right job, and use the tool correctly, it can be effective. The Kryptonite cable is very effective when used appropriately.

I also like that Kryptonite cables come with a velcro strap to keep the cable wound up.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good length, very strong, easy to take with you., July 12, 2007
By Kalchas (Minneapolis)
I recently moved to Minneapolis (which is very bike-friendly) and work downtown. Biking to work is a pleasure and it is nice to have a little piece of mind about the storage of my bike.

Also, I thought the cable would be inconvenient to carry, but it is not.. It can store easily in most bags that you would bike with, or around the handlebars or other parts of the bike. It has a little Velco strip that you can use to keep it looped up.

I definitely think that a longer cable like this 7 footer is a good idea (as opposed to one of the shorter cables). Once you loop it up for storage, it doesn't take a lot of space, and it offers more flexibility when you lock your bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not meant to lock up a bike, August 13, 2008
By matt (brooklyn, ny)
This cable is for securing wheels, etc, to a standard lock, not for primary protection against bike theft. It's great at what it does, but don't use it to lock up your bike.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Krytonite Better Than Many - But There Still Are Better Options, September 4, 2010
By MykL (Perfectville)
Looping cables through seatposts and quick release tires in conjunction with a Ubolt should deter the casual thief. Cables used alone are almost worthless. Still and all the best option is a case hardened (preferably through-hardened) 1/2 or 3/8th inch square linked chain (harder for cutters to grasp) secured by an impenetrable lock like the Masterlock 37-D with your removed front tire nestled in between your back tire/frame and the stationary object the chain is looped around with your quick release seat/post in your backpack/bag if you're gonna leave your valuable bike unseen for more than a few minutes. (Complete removal of the seat is another theft-impediment since it's not so easy riding off while standing up).

You can buy a Kryptonite fuggetaboutit 1/2 inch chain or make your own for literally a fraction of the price by googling ""campbell" "maxx" or "ultimate" security chain"" and ordering online by the foot. Be advised the 1/2inch, not counting the lock weighs about 2.6lbs/ft and the 3/8th @1.65lbs/ft. I've got a 3ft 3/8th inch chain trading off a little impenetrability for weight since I rarely leave the bike out of sight for long and never in an out of the way place where there's little foot traffic.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Too long, really, October 9, 2010
By J Gamble
A heads up, this might be more cable than you need. My daughter ordered two of these for us thinking the long one would be best--to get the front wheel, seat, etc. looped in to the u-lock (high bike theft area) But seven feet was much too long even for this, and the cable is too thick to pass through the bottom of the the seat. There must be a reason to need this size cable but I don't know what it is.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good for low-crime areas, September 14, 2009
By Ian Medina (NYC)
This cable along with a mini U-lock is good for low-crime areas and only for a couple hours at a time. The 7 foot length is great to go through the saddle rails, front wheel and the frame. I wouldn't leave it overnight though. The inherent problem with using a security cable with a U-lock is that once the U-lock is broken there goes everything else. I've since moved on to using a keyed cable lock to go along w/ my mini U-lock for leaving my bike overnight on the street.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Easily Cut, April 23, 2011
By Anthony Leopold (KALISPELL, MT, US)
I did not buy my cable lock at amazon, but it is the same 7ft by 10mm cable.

I locked my bike up the first day and it was stolen. Use a U Lock and attach the ulock to the staple or post and use the cable ONLY for secondary means. It is easily cut from what I concluded.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  100% Locked Up, September 27, 2009

With the extra length I can be sure both tires and my seat are locked up at the metro station, during my local commute. It also helps when I have to lock up in odd places that don't have any place for bikes.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  BUTTERED KRYPTONITE - what's in a name !!, August 4, 2010
By mark wurm
SAVE YOUR BIKE -- AVOID "KRYPTONITE" LIKE THE PLAGUE !!
Alternatively, if you believe that BUTTER will protect your bike from theft - then definitely buy this.
Buy Kryptonite if you believe that self-deception will protect your bike from theft.
Enjoy a second's worth of protection (but not many milliseconds more). You'll get longer protection - if you walk very, very slowly away from your bike and keep it in line of sight.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great cable!, October 5, 2010
By Tae H. Kim
This is a great cable that could go with any kinds of U-locks available, ideally with Kryptonite U-locks.

It is rigid, and not too thin. It's also long enough to cover both front and rear wheels.

Protect your wheels, using both U-lock and cable; and this cable can be your good companion to do so.

*Be aware that this cable is designed to be used with U-locks.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  GREAT CABLE FOR THE PRICE!!!, December 9, 2011
By SkunkApeMan (Florida Keys)
I wanted a cable I could run through both tires and the frame to secure my bike. I know you are supposed to use a cable as a secondary security device for the wheels, and a U-Lock as the primary security device. However I mostly tie my bike to big trees and 3 foot thick cement columns at the local outdoor mall, so an itty-bitty U-Lock wont do much for me. Besides, I don't have a $500 bicycle, so if they do cut the cable, I guess I'm out $100. LOL!

Also, the cable is not in my opinion too long as some have posted. When I took it out of the package I didn't believe it was 7 feet long til I stretched it all the way out. If you want the cable to put through both tires and the frame, this cable IS NOT too long! Buy it!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Beefy, November 3, 2011

This thing is beefy. Much thicker than expected. Coated so it won't scratch the paint on my steel frame and long enough to wrap around a medium sized tree. Great investment in the security of my bike, definitely worth the cost.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Excellent as a secondary lock for bike wheels, October 20, 2011

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Didn't Save My Front Wheel, August 4, 2011
By quality seeker (Philadelphia, Pa USA)
Not sure if this review will hit the right page, but I had the 4-foot version they sell in combination with the u-lock. It's really only useful as a visual sign that you took care to lock your bike up. I had my bike locked with a kryptonite u-lock through the back wheel and frame, and snaked this around the front tire and frame. One clean cut through the cable and that front wheel was gone. If you're buying this so you don't have to carry around 2 u-locks, then also invest in locking skewers. At that price though, I'll just get another u-lock, one for the frame and one for the front wheel.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great locking cable, August 1, 2011
By jojo86
This is a great locking cable. As most would know, this is not to be used as your primary bike lock, it designed to lock your wheels along with a Ulock to lock your bike securely. This 7 foot cable is a great length to lock both my tires and my seat, and I have a bigger bike.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Paired with a U-Lock this cable is great, June 23, 2011
By pmoutzouros (Chi-Town, IL USA)
This cable is long. Be aware of that before you purchase it. It's long enough to wrap through both wheels and the frame before it gets threaded through a U-Lock. It gets the job done. The only complaint I have is the velcro strap isn't long enough for me to wrap this up in a perfect circle, for when I throw it into a backpack. Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone who commutes with a bicycle and has to lock their bike up.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  nice addition, May 26, 2011
By picky with shoes (Davis, CA)
I have a road bike with quick release tires so this is a must have in Davis. I have not had anyone try to steal my bike and it gives me the peace of mind when I sleep at night. I have not had anyone actually try to tamper with my bike so I am not sure how well it performs in that matter.

By MttC
Overall great product. I have owned them before with great results. Won't prevent a bike thief, but will deter pretty well (but what did you expect). I would recommend the shorter cable. I have tried both. Shorter is easier to carry and just as easy to loop through a tire.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Best With U-Lock, September 19, 2010
By Aleksey (Nowhere near you)
Here is a photo of someone who is either out of a bike or who had to cut the cable to get their bike because they forgot the combination:

[...]

Thread this through a U-Lock. Make sure the U-Lock is secured well. This is great as an additional theft deterrent, but as the above image depicts, it is not a first line of defense..

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Perfect for a College Student!, September 19, 2010
By Nate
I am a freshman in college and I bike to school everyday. This cable is very long but also easy packed into a backpack. It can be used a couple different ways to lock a bike up. For awhile i used a combo lock with it and it worked perfect now for the added security I'm using a Kryptonite U-Lock. I recommend this to all my friends who are looking for a good length cable for a decent price.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Solid Item, September 2, 2010

By 0mgz
I use this in conjunction with a U-Lock when I leave my bike places for extended periods of time. It fits into my bag just fine, and is not heavy enough to notice a difference in weight. It is flexible enough to weave in and out and around pretty much anything. Overall a Very good Cable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great cable, July 14, 2010
By Mollyringworm
This is a great cable for wrapping around the seat post of a bike. I use a medium security master lock and for a quick in and out of stores or in to see a movie I feel very comfortable with this combination. It has enough length to secure two bikes and if arranged right up to three, through the wheels and frames.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  This is LONG, June 29, 2010
By Anonymous
Having a 21-inch frame bike, I thought the 4-foot cable would be too short for me, so I bought the 7-foot. Boy was I wrong! A 4-foot cable would have been plenty.

Transporting this cable is a little difficult. I just throw it in my backpack. It does come with an attached Velcro strap so you could wrap it up like in the picture, but even if it were wrapped up, I don't know where I'd put it.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fabulous security cable., October 14, 2009
By Lockett F. Ballard (Las Cruces)
Bought this cable for you graduate student partner who loves bicycling to campus. It is a lot sturdier than anything we found in Kmart, Walmart, etc. and works very well with my 40 year old UHaul moving van lock. On a campus where bicycle theft is common, this seems to be the extra deterant that one would want. The price is worth what should be a life time of security.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Ideal Length and Strength -, September 4, 2010
By Pragmatist (Phoenix, AZ.)
This is clearly a strong security cable, and in my case, easy to carry. Allows locking both the frame and front time at most any locating - probably could do rear tire as well, but I've never had anyone try to take the rear wheel. The cable loops twice around my waist and fastens easily with my MasterLock key lock for carrying while riding; others may find a different size works better for them. I've found that hanging the cable on my brake lever when parked at home (secured with Kryptonite U-lock around bike frame and a sturdy piece of heavy steel), inside closed garage, ensures that I don't forget to take the cable and lock with when riding. (Before doing that I forgot once, and found myself wanting to go inside places 10+ miles from home, but unable to lock the bike. Doesn't snarl up like small, thin, and easily cut cables.

By LOVE TO READ (Florida)
I just received this bicycle security cable and am THRILLED at how STRONG it looks. I will be using it with a great KRYPTONITE u-lock recommended on another page. This cable has such strength to it including the loops. They are so strong! THIS IS MY CABLE AND I WILL STAND BY IT. IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, I WILL UPDATED YOU, BUT I REALLY DON'T THINK I WILL BE GIVING A NEGATIVE UPDATE. I WILL GIVE A POSITIVE ONE...I JUST KNOW I WILL.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Lock Cable, January 31, 2012
By dumbodonus
Originally I had just a Kryptonite U shaped lock which didn't secure the frame and front tire. After purchasing this I have complete confidence in my bikes security. I live in New Orleans and have left my bike out in 'sketchy' areas for days and never had a problem. Either the crime here is getting better or this bike lock has held up. Kryptonite has good products and I have complete confidence in this bike cable.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Outstanding value at the purchase price I got, January 30, 2012
By BikeKrew7
I got this 7' cable for less than the 4' version. Shipping was timely. The velcro strap is very handy for storing the cable of this length. The extra length works well with locking both the front (quick release) wheel and the seat (with quick release adjustment), and going around a multitude of things to "anchor" the bike to in combination with a Kryptonite NY lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Big strong cable!, January 19, 2012
By WGL (Wisconsin, USA)
I was really surprised at the excellent quality of this thing, especially considering the reasonable price. I think you could tie down a Boeing 707 with it, so a bike, motorcycle, small car - whatever - will tie up quite nicely. Note that it's 7' long! You'll need to wrap it around a few times and have a big padlock on hand!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Monster Cable, January 18, 2012
By gcallaghan
This cable is huge. It definitely says "move on" to any ne'er do wells eyeing my bike. That said, it is difficult to fit in my saddle bag. I have to have the bag completely expanded and fight to push it in far enough to get the zipper closed. I probably underestimated the beefiness of the cable when I bought it. It definitely has the security factor, but you trade the portability factor.

I use this with a New York lock and I really like it. I loop it through itself and through my front tire and helmet to the big lock. It's nice and thick and long. I'm sure someone could cut it but it might take a few tries so I feel safe with it. It's the best you can get with a cable lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Size to go with 8in U-Lock, April 11, 2012

Good size to secure front and rear tire to 8in U-Lock when I need the reach of the U-Lock to connect to post. Also when U-Lock will not reach post, I use U-Lock for rear tire/frame and use this to secure front tire and lock to post a bit out of reach for U-Lock. Makes a good combination with my Kryptonite 8in U-Lock.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Don't leave cable close to the ground when you lock up, March 17, 2012
By Sherri863 (Central Florida)
Happy with product and was shipped quickly. Do not use alone, use with a U Lock like the Kryptonite New York Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Bracket ( 4-Inch x 8-Inch) to secure the wheels and other accessories. Make sure you don't leave cable close to the ground. Every cable and lock can be cut with a power saw/grinder, but I watched a video from a bike thief and he used the ground for leverage to cut the cables with his big pliers/cutters.

I use two of these in conjunction with two U-Locks to lock up my tricycle. Never had any trouble with the Kryptonite brand and am very happy with my purchase.

At first I thought it would be to big for locking up my bike. But I actually found that it allows me to lock it up in more locations then I would be able to with a standard length.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great price, May 8, 2012

Bought it by mistake. I wanted the shorter one to lock up my bike's front wheel, but couldn't be happier. I now use it to lock up the front and back wheel to my kryptonite U-lock (you know... sometimes it's tough to lock up the frame and rear wheel with your u-lock).

And it can't be beat for $7.
