1.0 out of 5 stars.  Abominable, July 19, 2007
By Picturesque Music (In the sky)
These are just terrible tires and flat more than any other tire I've ever used. I got a pair on a new bike and they are flatting like crazy (I use correct pressure, am not heavy, and ride on clean roads). They essentially have no puncture protection at all and I have zero confidence in them now. I'm replacing them with different tires. I'd never, ever consider using these in a race longer than 1 mile because the odds say I'll lose time fixing a flat.

"UltraSport tires make a stunning impact on every training ride "

Actually it's more like every second training ride, which is the frequency with which I've been flatting on these.

"UltraSport SafetySystem tire incorporates a reinforced tread for extra protection against punctures"

I don't believe it. I think these flat more than if you simply duct taped tubes to your rims and didn't use tires altogether.

I'd rather race on the incredibly heavy armadillos because at least I know I'd not lose time to a popped tire.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great looking, Fast, Fantastic Tires Overall, May 1, 2010
By Steve Mason
For the money these are some of the best road tires you can buy. I typically ride on Continental GP Attack & GP Force tires as they are the fastest tire on the market but still provide a very soft ride. These tires are every bit as soft at the same high pressure but are a tad bit slower, understandable for the money difference. Even though they have a higher rolling resistance they are still very fast and most people wouldn't even notice the difference. I've rode on many different brands of tires including high end Italian tires and these two Conti's or the Michelin Pro3 Race kick but on all of the others for road type riding. I like these more than the GP 4000's which my local bike store live by but I find these every bit as good even though they have a lesser TPI. I have several hundred miles and haven't suffered a punctured tire yet and I've road through some real junk too.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor Puncture Resistance, March 31, 2011
By CaliKiwi
I commute 150+ miles a week and have been using these tires for a few months - a few months too long. Although these tires are relatively soft and light providing a good feel and roll on the road, they also have a built in tractor beam for debris. The soft tread picks up sharp objects which then progress through the tire during use. The lack of casing to the tire provides little resistance to punctures. What started as a small cut from a chard of glass, ended up as a gaping hole that allowed the tube to bubble out and deflate instantly. Averaging 1-2 punctures a week is not acceptable, so it's in the recycling bin for these.

If your a weekend warrior and want a good feeling cheap tire - these are a good choice. If you on the road a lot and want a reliable tire - I do not recommend these tires.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Terrible Tires, Do Not Buy, September 15, 2008
By Java Developer
Absolutely the worse tires ever. I have been cycling a long time and fixed more flats than I care to count. These cheap tires came on my 2008 Bianchi (I can't imagine why?) and I just assumed they were decent, but then I had a flat.

Whatever you do, don't leave home without tire levers because there is no way you are getting these wire rimmed things off without them. Then, if you are lucky enough to get it back on, be sure to ride directly to the LBS since using the tire levers likely ripped the sidewall.

Take it from me, by Michelin or Vittoria, you can't go wrong. Steer clear of these...

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Puncture resistant? Pull the other one, May 22, 2010
By Triakel (Minneapolis)
First off, I am a big fan of Continental bike tires. I use the Hometrainer for indoor training, and have had great experience on long tours and city commuting with both the GP 4000 and GP 4-Season tires. But I had to comment when I read the manufacturer's glowing description of the Ultra Sport's puncture resistant qualities.

Users reviews on a major road cycling review site almost unanimously refute this claim, saying the tire wears out quickly and punctures easily.

Yesterday, I was commuting to work on a highway shoulder, when this tire -- which had a total of 150 miles on it -- developed a 2-3 mm "arrowhead" puncture, causing an immediate flat. The tire has a gap in the tread that continues through the liner, and it is now unusable. By comparison, I and a riding partner have ridden more than 8,000 miles on Continental GPs and Vredestein Fortezza TriComps (admittedly twice the cost of the Ultra Sport) with only a handful of flats, none of which ruined the tire. (Come to think of it, I can't remember *ever* flatting with the GPs. All the flats I recall were using the TriComps, which are essentially a soft-compound, but lined, racing tire.)

Perhaps I had bad luck with some freak road debris yesterday, but the verdict among users indicates otherwise. The Ultra Sport appears to be an inexpensive, entry level road tire that is not designed for any sort of road abuse. Too bad. It grips well and provides a super-smooth ride.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Avoid, unless you get a perverse kick out of constantly changing flat tires, June 30, 2010
By Lypo Suck (Hades, United States)
These tires are a joke. In terms of performance, they're actually pretty good - smooth, fast, minimal road resistance, etc.... But, they are magnets for glass, small sharp rocks, and any debris one has to ride through all the time on busy urban streets. I averaged 2-3 flats per month with these things, which is heinously bad and totally unnecessary. And if you ride everyday, you'd be lucky to get much more than a few months out of them before the tread wears out and they become paper thin. So, don't be tempted by the relatively cheap price - this is a classic example of you get what you pay for. Despite decent performance, there is NOTHING I can recommend about these tires. If you can't afford more expensive tires, you are honestly much better off getting some inexpensive gumwalls.

Update: So, at the time of writing, it's been about a year since I upgraded from these dreadful tires to Continental Gatorskins, and I'm happy to report that after a year of riding approx. 60 miles per week on the Gatorskins, I haven't had one single flat yet. This just confirms what dreadful tires the Ultra Sports are. It also confirms that the people who wrote positive reviews of the Ultra Sports either work for Continental, or only ride their bikes for a few miles a week on smooth, super clean, well-paved, suburban streets. There's no other explanation!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Should be called Ultra Flats, June 30, 2010
By Shawn Nault
I have had my new Fuji (shame on them for putting these tires on the bike) for all of 7 days and have had a flat on every other ride for a total of 4. I have been riding theses same roads for years without a flat on my other bikes.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  9 miles to flat, June 11, 2010
By Eric D. Joseph
These are the tires that came on my new bike. They were properly aired at the bike shop, but 9 miles into my first ride the rear punctured on the sidewall. I had to call my friend to come pick me up. I don't want to worry about patching these every ride, time to look for something new.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not such great traction, March 26, 2012
By Chainstay Miguel
I've had good luck with Continental Gatorskins and Grand Prix tires (high end), but I decided to save some money on my last tire purchase, so I went with the Ultra Sports. I haven't had an unusual number of flats, but I don't think they grip very well. On my last ride, I had to cover about 100 yards on gravel, and when I returned to the concrete surface, I wiped out when I stood on a short incline, and my rear tire spun out. Luckily, I was not on a fast descent, banking into a steep corner. Admittedly, these tires had two seasons of wear on them, so I might have been pushing them beyond their expected wear. They probably picked up some dust from the gravel, too. Regardless, I can't remember ever having that happen to me before on a road bike. I swapped them out for a new pair of Grand Prixs that afternoon. I don't mind compromising comfort or convenience when I buy an economy product, but I don't want to risk my safety.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Very poor tires, March 23, 2012

On my 3rd day out using these tires, I got a flat already. It wasn't glass or nails, it was a small little rock. Don't waste your money.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  good value, June 14, 2010
By Dwayne A. Hoover (Northern VA)
I have two sets of these. One set with almost 1000 miles on them (700c x 23) on my road bike and a newer set (700c x 25) on my commuter. I'm knocking on wood as I write this, but I have had zero issues with them. For the price, they are a great value and as long as you're not having the same issues the other reviewers are mentioning, they're great light duty/novice tires. They are a bit tough to get on a rim, but I see that as a good thing, a testament to the toughness of the tire. Really, nothing a little elbow grease and some tire levers can't handle.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  love em, February 20, 2010
By mad man (Batcave, FL USA)
Got these stock with my road bike, 700x23. They're been really great so far. I commute to campus with them. Ridden over some nasty stuff. No flats yet! Even if I got one, it would be my fault, and I'd be happy to scrub in a new pair since they seem pretty affordable. If I weighed anymore than I do currently I don't know if I'd like how much they flex though, I weigh 210 pounds. Just don't ride over anything ridiculous or jump curbs. Seriously, you're on a road bike, it's meant for one thing, the road.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  too many flats, May 12, 2012
By nuwerty
Do not use if you think you might be running over general city debris from trees, glass, etc. After probably 300 miles, I have had 3 flats on the back tire, and now a sizable hole, running at around 100psi. I hate this tire and can't wait to replace it.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Not so awesome, May 8, 2012
By Eddie
I only have a few hundred miles on these tires and they developed a bubble, a ring of split rubber, a few flats.
I'm very observant of where I ride and avoid any thing that would dan madge the tire. I normally ride the conti Gator skin but wanted to try these cheaper tires. I will be buying some gatorskins not the ultra sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Conti Ultra Sports Doing Well, July 6, 2011
By sindvik (Mineapolis, MN)
I bought a pair of 27 x 1 1/4" Ultra Sports knowing about these poor reviews. I use them on my late 80's Trek Elance and only ride on pavement with no more than 80 psi. The asphalt I bike on runs from new to really bad. After 350 miles in the past six weeks, no problems at all. I estimate the rear tire will get a little over 1,000 miles. Not bad at all for a tire in this price range!

Update: I now have a little over 1,000 miles on these same tires. No flats. No cuts. Very smooth. Looks like I will get at least 1,400 miles before replacement. I just bought two more. Great tire for the money. BTW, I'm no lightweight at 215 lbs.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Overpriced, but under-rated, July 6, 2011
By BStone (Boston)
So far 1,650 miles, 3 flats (all on the rear -- one of Murphy's Laws at work), suburban Boston and Southern Maine roads. I will retire these for indoor duty at 2,000. The rubber has squared off quite a bit, but the tires still handle okay. The flats were all due to little bits of wire worming their way through the casing. One of them was so small I could barely see it.

Pro: Soft, sticky rubber makes for a comfy ride and holds the road when cornering -- but not a precision thing.
Con: Soft, sticky rubber is slow. This is a fairly heavy tire -- 330g new and 310g after 1,650 miles (I weighed them the other day). Soft rubber may allow more little bits of debris to collect.

So what's the use of a slow, sticky tire? Great for training rides and sport touring in the country on rough roads. Mine are 700-25c and soften the bumps. I notice a huge difference when I switch from a hard, narrow, 700-20c tire to these. On another wheelset I keep 700-25c Rubino Pro IIs, a far superior tire, but not quite as soft and comfy. The Rubino is faster, however, and corners with great precision compared to these. When I bought these they were about $20 each, and that was probably a fair price -- maybe a little on the high side. Nashbar sells a house-brand tire that's much cheaper and lighter.

About me: I'm 130lbs, 5'8", male, runner, cyclist. If you are 220lbs, you may have different results.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Tire, June 27, 2011
By David Desso
I do most of my riding in the bike lanes of Memphis Tn. Here, bike lanes are more the broken glass and nails than they are for bikes, so it is essential to have a good thick tire. These do the trick and still roll nicely.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  27X1 Continental Ultra Sport Tire, April 9, 2011
By R. Herrero (Miami. Fl)
This particular size is obsolete and mostly found on road bikes that are over twenty years old. The few tires that are found in local bicycle shops are Asian brands of questionable quality. Finding this size from a reputable European rubber company is amazing and in most likelihood is the best tire that can be found in a 27" size. Brand reputation gives reasonable assurance that punctures won't be a regular occurrence.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Not bad for a cheap tire, March 19, 2011
By jmk (Rochester Hills, MI United States)
I had this last season on my Giant TCX. They worked fine. Not the most comfortable ride but, come on, what truly is comfortable at the PSI thee run at? Having said that, they did not last the winter in my heated garage. Just took the bike down, checked the rim, re-seated everything, and pumped them up to 110. The tires look like they have herpes now. Bubbling is several places at the rim. Pulled them off and checked the tubes...they're fine, but the tires are shot after one light season of <500 miles.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bike road tire, May 28, 2009
By kevinscottadkins (Hinton, WV)
My bike(2007 Motobecane Nemesis) came with these tires on them. I had put 1,500 miles on them before I tried to ride a 10 mile stretch of a gravel trail with them at about 20 mph average and popped the bead on the rear tire. I bought this tire to replace the one I had damaged. For the price these worked very well for me in the past and I wanted to continue using this model. I have only put about 200 miles on the new tire but so far so good.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Wretched rings of failure, February 20, 2012
By Pointy Deity
I forgot that I'd had these horrendous things on my hybrid commuter bike years ago and bought a set for my road bike. I get a flat about once a week, and it's usually caused by some tiny shard of metal or glass that should've never made it through the casing. I'm not that fat (~166 lbs) and ride on decent roads. Michelin Pro2Races had much better puncture resistance than these. If you're on a budget, just buy a better tire - you'll save money by not having to constantly replace tubes. If you need a good, cheap, bulletproof tire, get Michelin Krylion Carbons instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  It works for me, May 14, 2011
By etane (LA)
I'd recommend only using Ultra Sport with Conti butyl tubes. I virtually never flat with this combo. Only once did I flat when I ran over a staple. Flats were a weekly event when I was using tubes other than Conti's.

The tire looks great and feels comfy and secure. These are spectacular budget tires but only when you pair them up with Conti tubes.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Finally gave up on these tires!!!, March 29, 2011
By Ismael74 (Arizona, USA)
I live in Arizona and usually ride from 75 to 125 miles weekly. 2 of the guys that ride w/ me recommended these, saw the price here (Amazon) went for it and got them. First couple ride was really nice quite fast tires for been quite smooth, I was really happy and impressed, really enjoyed those rides (the reason I gave 2 stars). Unfortunately, got 3 flats on my last 3 rides. Don't know if its just bad luck or what cause my friends state that that hasn't happen to them, but I just can't put up with having a flat every time I go for a ride :(!!!

By blue sky (Carbondale, CO USA)
I'm not sure what kind of roads the previous reviewer rides on or if the fault is with his tubes, but I've been running this tire for two years now with great results. Only one flat has happened the whole time and that was a "goatshead" thorn I picked up on a trail that would've flattened pretty much any tire. I highly recommend this tire for economy and overall performance.
