Didn't get my money's worth--and that's a good thing!, November 6, 2010
By Rachel (Louisiana)

|
We got this to help our reluctant son prepare to ditch the training wheels. We made a deal that he would try riding with the balance buddy for one week, and if he didn't feel more confident, we would reinstall his training wheels. Much to our surprise, after two, 15-minute sessions on consecutive days, he was riding completely independently. We loved seeing our son's confidence level soar to the point that, after 3 sessions, he demanded we remove the balance buddy. Therefore, despite the fact that the balance buddy is a well made, sturdy backsaver, we got very little use out of it.
Instead of abandoning it in the storage shed, we decided to attach it to our 3 1/2 year old daughter's bike, assuming that it would remain there for quite some time. We expected it to take much longer, but after about 8 sessions, she is riding on her own with only an occasional need for assistance. I feel that the Balance Buddy is infinately better than training wheels in helping children learn to balance, as it allows them to sense when they are leaning and self-correct. I highly recommend this for any child who is ready to kick the training wheel habit!!

The Bike Buddy is Really Amazing, September 3, 2009
By MackDaddy (New York, NY)
|
|
I bought the Bike Buddy 3 yrs ago with hopes of using it to teach my daughter who was 5 at the time. Well I tossed it in the basement and forgot about it until this summer. Within 1 hr my daughter was riding on her own. It took her a little longer than most of the reviewers because she had a spill on concrete and was TERRIFIED of falling. I feel the trick is to try find a large dirt patch about the size of a baseball infield, where they can learn with no cars around and without fear of falling on concrete. The same day my daughter was on her own, I taught her friend within 15 minutes!! Two weeks later, I taught my 3 yr old son to ride on his own within 45 mins!!
Before using the Bike Buddy, I spent countless hours tring to teach my daughter to ride and all I got was a frustrated little girl and a LOT of back pain.
The Bike Buddy is an incredible confidence booster for kids and the best $20 bucks that a parent will spend!!

Ok product, June 19, 2007

My son turned 6 this year and decided that he no longer needed training wheels on his bike.
He got a new bike, he is tall 4'6" and skinny 55lbs, so his bike is a 20" bike
I have taken him out with this balance bar and it is at time very difficult to keep him from falling over.
It helps some with his confidence but we are on week two and still not on his own.

Not Magic!, July 27, 2010
By shoemom (Sacramento, CA)

We already have an older daughter who learned the old-fashioned way at 5yrs old so we had a good idea of what teaching to ride entailed. Our second daughter (4yrs old) got a bike with training wheels and hated it because it was too wobbly. I saw this and decided to give it a shot. It has been a couple months and she still isn't riding and at this point is so discouraged, she cries when we suggest she ride her bike to the park (4 houses away). This is not magic. Your kid pretty much has to be almost there for this to be helpful. If you are looking for something to really teach balance, put the bike in the garage for a while and invest in a balance bike - sometimes called a pre-bike. It is two wheels with no pedals so kids learn to balance on their own, unassisted then move back to their regular bike. There are several 3yr. olds in our neighborhood riding regular bikes because they had balance bikes starting around age 2. I wish we hadn't spent the $20 on this and instead put that money into a balance bike.

Big help for nervous kid, May 13, 2009
By J. Toth (Michigan)
|
|
It's really just a big bolt-on sissy bar like some older 70s bikes had. But it works really well for bike training. Our 6 year-old is fairly coordinated but a little nervous about getting hurt after a few spills. The nice thing about the bar is that you can hold it to keep them steady, and then lower it to give them a push if they're not big on pedaling. It will hold its place wherever you put it, but can be pulled up and down while in use. He went from being scared of riding to doing 2-3 minutes by himself in a few hours. We still have to give him a push to get started every once in a while but overall this thing has helped out tremendously.

I was getting anxious to get my 7 yr old daughter on two wheels. The Balance buddy was much more effective than training wheels. I tell everyone about it!
[...]. Edited to add- If my kids had been younger, I would have loved to have a balance bike!

We'd given up hope of ever getting our 7 year old daughter out of training wheels. Then we saw this on another child's bike, and it seemed worth a try. In less than an hour she was riding unassisted. We removed it the next day. Fortunately it doesn't cost much.

Exceptionally easy to install & Use, September 13, 2010
By Loner

I was developing back pain by running behind my 4 yr old holding the seat - as he learnt to control the bike's handle - due to the awkward bent over postion. This product is the perfect remedy. It takes about 2 minutes to install - takes away all the bending and helps the child's confidence (fear of toppling is not there). My son is now riding by himself within 3 days of using this!

It works!!!, August 30, 2010

My 4 year was getting too fast for her training wheels. This worked great and really saved my back. She is now riding all on her own after about three sessions. We'll leave it on a bit so we can guide her through tricky parts of the neighborhood, but this thing takes the pain out of teaching.

Best thing ever!, August 23, 2010
By Jennifer Stoddard

I bought this after seeing a neighbor teach her son to ride with it. We never needed training wheels and my daughter learned to balance in less than an hour. I like the shape of the handle as it doesn't catch on things like trees and bushes as she goes by as some other handles look like they might. The simple design went right on the rear axle in seconds and is always at the right height for me to crab on if I need to assist- even with her baby brother on my hip! I have recommended it to everyone I see!

Preliminary evaluation, August 4, 2010
By Curtis G (OC, CA, USA)

|
I vividly remember the first time I rode my bike without training wheels. I rode straight for about three houses; then, in the middle of an intersection, my bike spun around five times and threw me to the ground. (Hey, that's what it felt like, and my friends all agreed: five times!) I suppose avoiding that kind of learning experience was what prompted me to look into riding ""assistants.""
I read the reviews and thought the Balance Buddy sounded like a great idea. My 3-year-old has a Cars 12-Inch Boys BMX Bike by Huffy and he's just starting to want to ride it. The BB was easy to put on, but seemed (despite all the reviews talking about how it allows you to walk upright) a little short. I'm 6 feet tall and extended to its longest position, the BB is just about at my fingertips. It does move up and down (pivots at the axle) so that's helpful. The bike is only a 12-incher, so obviously the BB would be an easier reach on a larger bike.
At first my son didn't want me to have anything to do with his riding; he would only let the 8-year-old neighbor boy ""push"" him. After a couple of days, though, he allowed me to help him ride. I hope it wasn't my fault, but he insisted that I put the training wheels back on the bike. We've only been at this for a few days; maybe he's just not ready for two wheels. No rush; he'll have plenty of time to eat asphalt between now and his 16th birthday. Once he gets more comfortable with the whole balancing concept, I'll revise my review as necessary.

Our son is 3 years and 4 months and riding his bike without training wheels! He did have the Adams run bike since his 2nd birthday but the balance buddy helped him take off on his new pedal bike within a couple of weeks! I highly recommend this item! Only improvement would be to extend the handle just a bit as my hubby is 6.3.....

I put this on my 6 year-old daughter's bike last weekend. Within 15 minutes she was riding on her own around our court. We will have another session this weekend (for my peace of mind) but I know she will be riding independently by the end of the day. We plan to pass it on to other neighbors to use for their kids.

My 5 y/o has been wanting to learn to ride w/o training wheels since last summer, but it killed my back trying to hold her bike and run along with her, so we just kept the training wheels on a little longer. When our neighbor's daughter started riding w/o training wheels, of course my daughter wanted to also, so I found the Balance Buddy and ordered it. We love it and can't say enough about how great it is! My daughter was riding unassisted after less than two hours! I was able to hold on to her bike without bending over, and was able to let go, and easily grab the handle if she started to wobble! All the neighborhood kids are wanting to ride without training wheels now (they are ages 2-4)and the Balance Buddy is making it so easy for us to help them! The Balance Buddy is so easy to put on and adjust, and well worth the money!

Great idea. I've tried it with my timid 5 year old who LOVES to lean to one side when riding.
After about 10 minutes of trying to hold her up, my forearm is sore! That aside, my husband is able to use it with ease and our daughter is at least willing to TRY to ride her 2 wheeler.

Worked for us!, April 17, 2011
By NobodySpecial

I don't like to write reviews, but I thought I had to because I was amazed by how well this product worked.
I bought this for our daughter because I was tired of watching her fall using training wheels. She had NO balance. After we bought the Balance Buddy, I started off just walking behind her, feeling her go off-balance through the handle. I would tell her to keep her balance and lean the other way. Then we practiced standing in place (using the Balance Buddy to keep steady), and I would let go. She would fall to one side and stop herself with her leg. Finally, I pushed her using the Balance Buddy (angled closer to the street to allow us to get some oomph) and let go. It took about 5x 20-25 minute sessions together before she was able to ride on her own.
Another useful feature of having a handle is "emergency breaking". Once she got the balance down, we had to work on stopping. Being able to chase after my daughter and grab the handle helped prevent her from hitting curbs, bushes, and the neighbor's parked SUV.
The only thing I didn't like about the Balance Buddy was the metal L that tucks under the frame of the bike. It's used to keep the Balance Buddy from hitting the street and being dragged behind. I found that the L kept bending. It was easy to bend back in place, though.

I was holding the chair of bicycle for first 6 months to train my 5 yrs old kid and found this one on Amazon and it was great. I am very happy with it and it makes easier for the kid to have more confident and allows her to ride faster and balance herself while I jog along holding this balance buddy gently. She was confident riding all by herself only after using for a week. A must have for those training kid on how to ride bicycle, or simple to catch and hold the bicycle to avoid kid from injuring herself when she is about to fall or off balance. Well worth $20.

Don't break your back, December 9, 2010
By rl (CA,USA)

|
I was trying to teach my 4 year old daughter and having hard time holding her. I was going to break my back and that's when my friend mentioned about something like this. So I read the reviews and bought this one. What a relief? It is very comfortable to teach bike riding and also gives confidence to my daughter that I can hold and stop her any time quickly. Other than that, learning quickly really depends on the kid and I don't see why this would help like many reviews pointed out.

Taught my daughter to ride, May 22, 2010
By T. McGraw (Macomb, MI USA)

This handle works great. It just bolts onto the rear axle, piece of cake to install. Then you can hold on as your child learns to balance. It makes it a lot easier to run behind the bike and offer assistance when needed. You'll need to hold on less and less as they learn to ride. My daughter was riding on her own after about 4 sessions with the balance buddy.

I highly recommend Balance Buddy!, November 4, 2009
By M. Keisling (Fairfax, VA USA)

My son had a tough time leaning to balance a bike because he was fearful after a fall he took while still on training wheels (it can happen.) I saw Balance Buddy at a store for about $15 and figured it was worth a try for just a little money. In our case, it took time and patience, with short but frequent trips to an empty school parking lot for practice. Eventually, the day came when I knew he was balancing 100%, so I let go. In minutes, he was taking laps around the parking lot on his own, and very happy about it. Honestly, without this product, my son's bike might have ended up gathering dust in the garage permanantly. It was the best way to help him gain the confidence he needed. It was also much easier on my back than trying to hold onto his bike seat. I'd recommend BB for anyone buying their child's first two-wheeler.

Literally, $20 for 20 minutes of use. Worth every penny!, August 4, 2009
By Crispy (Indianapolis)
|
|
I put this on my 5 year old's bike. I made a loose circle with my thumb and fingers around the bar so that I wasn't really holding it but it couldn't tip without being able to grab it quickly and ran along side.
A couple passes down the sidewalk to show him that I wouldn't let him fall and then I took my hands off completely. After that, he was on his own.
Could we have accomplished the same thing without the Balance Buddy...? Probably. After all it is more about confidence than this cheap piece of steel. But this made it so easy that I didn't care that I spent $20 for less than 20 minutes of use. Besides, it will get used for his brother and passed down to other family members.

really does save your back!, April 18, 2009
By Computer Geek Mom

|
My son is 7 - very tall and not super coordinated. He was starting to feel really miserable about his friends being on two wheels when he was still on 3. We tried training wheels but they really didn't seem to help him get the balancing idea - with the wheels down he felt perfectly stable and with them up he felt too unstable to even try. Balance buddy meant that I could walk along behind him instead of being crouched over grabbing the seat like i was with my daughter. I also found that I was only taking up as much of the balancing job as i needed to at the moment - he had the freedom to wobble a bit as he learned to shift his weight but he always knew I'd be there to catch him. Within half an hour he was pedaling 20-30 feet away from me without putting his feet down and on the second day he was riding completely on his own. Remember that every kid is different - he really wasn't ready for a two-wheeler at 6 and he needed a summer full of growing, using his scooter, standing on one leg at a time and doing other games to improve his balance. When he was ready, though, the balance buddy really helped him feel confident and learn QUICKLY!

The Balance Buddy saved our backs, while making it fun and safe for our son to learn to ride a two wheeler. He was riding by himself within 20 minutes. Having the Balance Buddy provided him a sense of security and balance that gave him the confidence to just take off. Even when we let go of the handle, it was easy to grab it again if it looked like he needed a little support. He never fell off his bike once. Now he rides like a champ! We only had to leave the Balance Buddy on the bike for about two days. Now, we have loaned it to several friends who are enjoying the same success. I would recommend this product to EVERYONE!

Product works great!, June 29, 2009
By dhakkan (Canton, MI, USA)

The Balance Buddy is easy to install and use. Certainly does spare the back and gives the holder a good workout. Do wear your running shoes. :)
Unfortunately, my son had learnt to 'balance' himself on the training wheels by adjusting himself on his seat. So, I need to have him unlearn this while training him to balance himself with a proper posture and adequate movement of the handlebar... In addition to purchasing this product, I would recommend not using the training wheels at all.
UPDATE (after 2 months): My son rides the bike alone! Took him about 5-6 training sessions. First couple of sessions, I unwittingly deterred him (by having an unrealistic expectations). Next couple of sessions, I would encourage him to sit straight and learn to balance himself by turning the handlebar in the direction he was 'falling'. The last couple of learning sessions, I kept a very loose grip; tightening it only when he was sure to fall.
Once I was confident he could go on his own, I deliberately jogged next to him so that he realized that he was on his own. Now, he's learning to start and stop on his own...
Again, thanks to its simple design, the Balance Buddy WORKS!

Good quality, arrived fast, install is simple. However, our 2 yo refused to go near his bike after we attached it. Turns out he cannot stand to have any adornments whatsoever on his "ride." Better than the more expensive bike training handles, July 7, 2011
By Gilman Wong
|
|
I picked this up several years ago for my daughter when she was 4. After just two 15-20 min sessions she could do short 30 yard straight runs by herself. Another week and I didn't really have to use it anymore (although she insisted on leaving it mounted for a month or so because she liked having it there).
I have since loaned it to a neighbor (whose daughter needed it for about 2 months) and now my nephew is using it to learn to ride *his* bike.
I believe this handle is superior to the more expensive fixed training handles because of the hinged attachment point. The hinge makes it awkward to push the bike along, forcing you to do what you are supposed to be doing: providing a bit of lateral stability. The fixed handles make it too easy to push the bike along which detracts from the learning experience.
Mounting is simple. If you have them, take the training wheels off and slip the lower holes over the wheel hub bolts. I did need to add an extra washer to properly clear the frame (this will vary by bike model). Note that it is important that you do not add too many washers as you need the horizontal tab at the end of the arm to strike the horizontal strut. This is what prevents the handle bar, which pivots around the rear hub, from dropping all the way down and striking the ground.
The handle height is adjustable to several positions and ours has been used by parents ranging from 5' 4" to 6' without undue strain.
Durability is also good (not surprising given the simplicity of the design) with only cosmetic flaws to the finish after 3 different kids.

Did not fit on Bike Without Modification, November 16, 2011
By Dan (New York, NY)
|
|
I loved the idea of this and the positive reviews sold me. The problem we ran into is that it did not fit on the bike properly. Our 5 year old son is very tall for his age and has a bigger inexpensive "dirt" bike from Toys R Us. When I wen to attach the Balance buddy. It was clear that the bend in the metal on the Balance Buddy, which is meant to keep it from moving lower while attached, had to be straightened to allow for clearance of the bike's frame. So I bent the metal and got it attached; however, the Balance Buddy does not stay in one position and requires constant tightening. That said, It is still better than hunching over.

Great training device, September 19, 2011

Overall a great training device. Strong, sturdy, adjustable, and works just as it should. Unfortunately it doesn't have the ability to teach balance, so my son just rides along at an angle while I hold him upright from sheer road-rash torture. But the device works great!

Less Mulit-functional than I though, July 29, 2011

I was hoping this would work to train my son (6 years old) to ride without training wheels which it did- worked great. It worked so well we only needed it for one day. I had then planned to put it on my 3 year old's bike to help push her up hills since she is not a strong peddler but you cannot use this product with training wheels. Other similar products on the market attach to the seat so could be used to aid/push young riders then help transition older riders from training wheels. All-in-all good product but hard to justify one day of use.

Forget Training Wheels, December 17, 2011

Purchased this training handle for our 6 y/o daughter and found it to be perfect. She had been learning to ride with traditional training wheels for several months with slow progress. The training handle had her riding confidently on her own in a few hours. Could not recommend it more highly.

Works as advertised, November 30, 2011

I initially tried running along behind my daughter's bike holding the seat as she pedaled. My back didn't last long doing that. With this handle I can hold on without bending over, a huge difference. As others have noted, another big advantage with this handle is that your child can't tell when you let go. They continue pedaling all by themselves without knowing it. Soon they realize they don't need you to hold on at all.
This handle just attaches to the 2 screws that originally held the training wheels. It comes with the washers and bolts needed. Installation took about 2 minutes. The length is adjustable, although most adults will need it extended to its full length.
