About Mongoose
In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as Mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The first of its kind, the BMX bicycle was named after bicycle motocross and was designed to fit the needs of the rough-and-tumble dirt-racing pastime that took its toll on wheels and bicycles. The heavy-duty, one-piece cast-aluminum Mongoose Motomag wheel was soon born, and it was the first competition-ready BMX bicycle available. Skip Hess, while in Australia pursuing his motor sports passion, came into contact with a strange and unusual cat-size animal--the mongoose. Known for its passive nature while unprovoked, yet vicious and aggressive enough to kill a threatening Cobra twice its size, the Mongoose impressed Hess, who quickly registered the Mongoose trademark for his new bicycle racing frame.

The Expert BMX bicycle model, which is still a cornerstone of the Mongoose BMX line today, was introduced in 1980. Shortly after, Mongoose captured the first ever ABA National #1 Cruiser Title. Previously known for the 20-inch bicycle, this title signaled the re-direction of Mongoose bicycles to larger-wheeled, adult-sized models. Several years later, Mongoose continues to dominate the cruiser racing circuit with six National No. 1 Cruiser titles, leading to the introduction of adult-sized Mongoose all-terrain bicycles (ATBs).

In 1992, Mongoose pioneered the full-suspension market with the introduction of the Amplifier. This design is still the most-copied suspension design in the market. Several year later, Mongoose launched the Newman adult bicycle frame, which is proven to be 15% stronger than any other bike frame in the market. The design, while functionally sound, also raised eyebrows because of its distinctive look.

In the next few years, Mongoose increased its marketing focus to dominate the bicycle industry, and more important, extend beyond it. The Mongoose brand marketing initiative makes more than 100 million impressions. Mongoose?s brand awareness increased by over 130% in 1999 and solidifies the No. 2 market share position in units and dollars. Mongoose was acquired by Pacific Cycle, LLC, and continues to grow and prosper with more than 40 models of BMX, mountain, trail, freestyle, jumping, comfort, road, and cyclocross bikes.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Nothing fishy about it!, July 30, 2007
By P. DENGLER
We just purchased the Mongoose Squid Unicycle for my 11 year old daughter. She was up and riding in one week. It is a very good deal for someone looking for a unicycle for casual riding.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Do not buy it!!, November 19, 2008
By K. Lemler
I purchased three of these for my nieces and nephews. On our first round of orders, one was missing a parts box, and two had punctured inner tubes. In addition, none of the three boxes had complete instructions. After our returns, we still had to buy replacement inner tubes, as the originals were faulty. So, I had to replace BRAND NEW inner tubes for all three unicycles. I wish I had just spent the additional money up front for something of higher quality. I'm not sure why Amazon even sells something of such poor quality. I am very dissatisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fabulous fun for all!, January 8, 2008
By A. Crawford (Jal, NM USA)
I bought this unicycle for my 10 year old son this Christmas. He was thrilled, and so am I every time I see him ride it. He had never ridden one before, so he is a beginner, but loves it. It is very sturdy and well made. He has had several good wrecks to date, and fortunately, neither of them have any physical damage!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  No problems like other reviews, October 12, 2009
By David Ashworth (Smyrna, TN United States)
I just wanted to add to the reviews here. Every review about the instructions is true. The instructions assume more of the unicycle is put together that what really is, so you have to look at the box to figure out how to get it together, but it's not impossible. I didn't get two left pedals or anything like that.

I wanted a cheap unicycle to start learning on and this seemed to be a good start. We have wrecked this alot. Some of the pieces that look metal are plastic around the seat and the round pedal covers.

Is this the Unicycle that you'll end up with? Probably not. It's a great cycle to start with. It's held up to the abuse I've given it and my son. If you can use basic deductive skills to get it together and want something cheap to start, this is the way to go. It's exactly what I was looking for.

I'll probably move to a bigger tire and let my son keep this for awhile.

God bless,
Dave Ashworth

1.0 out of 5 stars.  MONGOOSE GREATNESS TO FAILURE, March 16, 2009
By DawniMai (FL)
I grew up with Mongoose BMX bikes- remember the ones you could crash through the trees on and it would be just fine?
Mongoose!! Where have you gone?

I gave this item to my son one week ago.
satisfied that it would be great, it is after all a Mongoose.
NOPE!
THREE DAYS LATER it is broken.
The pedals fell off a few times, and it was nearly impossible to assemble correctly (it appears to go together, only to find they are not at the right angles). Then, the axle and shafts do not connect right. spins, no wheel action. I am told it needs to be welded or replaced. Both cost as much as the unicycle!!!
seat is also VERY uncomfortable for boys/young men (girls as well, but much worse for boys). Replaced with a Torker Unistar- excellent alternatative!!!
Initially, Amazon charged me 20% of the cost in order to return the defective merchandise, after a scolding, they immediately refunded the restocking fee, with sincere apologies.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  $120 Later, February 12, 2009
By Michele C. Ross (Chicago)
I got this for my daugther for Christmas,it came with no instrustions but we were able to put it together it wasn't that hard.
The probem came when she attempted to ride it. The left crank fell off, we put it back on and again it came off. So I took it to a bike shop only to be told that the crake was bad and would have to be repleaced. So I am ording another one. At this point I wish I had purchased the Unicyle at the bike shop for $90.00.

Mongoose 20-Inch Squid Unicycle
I purchased this for my 9 years old son. This is heavy weight to handle.
The tentacle frame's corner hits my sons inner knees.Assemble instruction does not mention which way to put volts, where to install 4 rubber sheets.we have to wait using this when my son gets taller than 5 feet.I am going to order the different 16"size unicycle.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Assembly instructions are useless, September 22, 2009
By Mario Bonura (Santa Ana, CA USA)
I purchased this unicycle for my grandson. When it arrived, the first thing I noticed that the box looked like it had been shipped from a battle zone in Bagdad. I originally intended to give the unit still in the box, but it was so damaged that I opened it immediately to check the contents for damage. Fortunately the contents were undamaged. However, the instructions only provided a picture of the unicycle with the wheel, fork, and cranks assembled. The only assembly indicated was to attach the seat and pedals. Actually I found a box full of parts and a bag of nuts and bolts with no instructions. After a careful review of the picture and relying on my experience with assembling similar equipment, I managed to complete the assembly. The use of some parts required some educated guesses. I think Mongoose needs to provide better packaging and adequate assembly instructions. Also, although the tube and tire were installed on the wheel, the tube was only slightly inflated and the valve stem was protruding from the rim at an angle. It was very difficult to straighten the valve stem and inflate the tube properly.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Lasted Only 3 Days, April 8, 2010
By A. Muller (Dallas, TX)
I bought the Squid as a starter unicycle. My interests were purely recreational. I just wanted to see if riding a unicycle was something that I could actually do, and since I wasn't going to be doing any trials, off-roading, or tricks, I thought this would be a good value purchase.

Mongoose, manufactured by Schwinn, is a brand I always liked as a kid, but unfortunately my unicycle ended up breaking after three days. Just as I was able to stay upright and ride for about 20 feet or so, the axle connecting the crank arms started to slip inside the hub. (I think this defect is called ""keyhole slop."") This made the unicycle unridable for me because when I tried to pedal forward, the slipping crank arms wouldn't generate any forward momentum in the wheel. By the way, I'm about 175 lbs--not an unreasonable weight for a unicycle.

Mongoose's customer service did not have the replacement parts in stock. So they told me to contact the retailer. However, before the retailer could refund my money, the they had to go back and forth with Mongoose/Schwinn to get authorization for a return shipping order--a process that took over a week. I did get a full refund, and now I'm using those funds to buy a Torker Unistar.

There were virtually no assembly instructions. But you can download some other ones on [..]. These downloadable ones are for a different unicycle, but they are slightly more helpful than nothing.

Also, there are unicycle sizing guides online. The size of the unicycle tire you should buy depends on your inseam measurement and what you want to do with it.

The three hours that I was able to practice with this were fun. Too bad about the premature failure!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Poor instructions, December 29, 2009
By Charlene Lupien (ma)
I can't comment on the quality because I can't put it together. The single sheet instruction is laughable. My guess is the people having problems with this is due to bad assembly caused by the poor instructions. Customer service was very helpful though. give them a call.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Lucky, Perhaps?, November 29, 2009
By John Oneill
Unlike many of the other buyers, I am very satisfied with the unicycle's quality--all parts came intact and unmutilated. My only dilemma was with some of the bolts--I did not know a certain 15mm wrench was necessary to assembly the unicycle, so just keep that in mind when purchasing. Other than that, it is INCREDIBLE. It looks amazing and feels extremely sturdy (especially due to the wide 3-inch wheel.) Once you finally get to ride it, you won't be dissatisfied. (...and yes, that's what she said. :P)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fat and looks good!, March 2, 2010
By Daniel Tang (Los Angeles, CA)
This is a great unicycle from a reputable brand to start learning from! I love the fatter tire and the 4 arm design. Makes it sturdy and looks good! No complaints here! I'm glad I didn't opt for one of the cheaper ones offered on forCycling that always have complaints about the pedals falling off.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Arrived Missing Parts, Which We Couldn't Replace, August 14, 2010
By Fr. Charles Erlandson (Tyler, Texas United States)
Somehow, my daughter has gotten it into her head that she was created to be a clown. So she's taken up juggling and ordered this Mongoose Squid Unicycle. The Mongoose seemed the perfect starter unicycle, especially since it was less expensive. But so far my daughter has not been able to use the unicycle and will probably have to buy an entirely different one.

There are a few positive things about it. My daughter was attracted to the Mongoose Squid largely because its squid design is unique, cool, and attractive. The unicycle seems sturdy, and the seat is comfortable, well-padded, and reinforced.

Now comes the down side. First, the unicycle was missing its crank arms, which means my daughter couldn't ride it. We tried contacting the manufacturer, who responded only slowly to our requests. They never did replace the correct crank arms, so we decided to take the unicycle to a local bike shop we respect. They told us that the crank arms for the Mongoose Squid were a different type from other crank arms and that they didn't have the parts. The guy told us that this was true for other parts on The Squid as well; for example, the 20 inch wheel may be easier for a beginner but it's not standard and is, as my daughter says, "goofy." The bike guy suggested if we were still interested in a unicycle that we should just buy another one and start from scratch. Altogether, there were 10 pieces missing when the unicycle came, and the box was damaged.

I'm giving this unicycle 2 stars because it's possible other people have had good experiences with it, but looking at other reviews, it looks like we're not alone.

I thought unicycling was supposed to be fun!

My 13 year old son assembled it with a little help from dad. I have to say this is probably one of his all-time favorite gifts. Nice size wheel, great seat (with protective metal shields to keep seat cover from tearing), and solid construction. GREAT buy and great find. No problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Mongoose Squid Unicycle Review, May 16, 2010
By Devin Biehler (Statesville, NC)
The instructions were a bit lacking, but it was pretty easy to figure out how to put this thing together. The pedal nuts loosened up a few times during the first few hours of riding, so a drop of blue loctite on each solved that. This is a very ruggedly built unicycle with a wide tire. Perfect combination for a beginner.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Name Brand, April 25, 2010
By Lisa Mccabe
I bought the unicycle about 3 weeks ago and then it broke, the ball bearings that let the wheel spine broke and my crank messed up when I peddle. So I called Mongoose to see if they knew how to fix it and they told me it couldn't be fixed and they shipped me a whole new rim for free, they said 3-10 business days but I ordered it Wednesday night and received that Friday.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  20 inch unicycle, Mongoose Squid, October 8, 2010
By Phil (Toledo, OH)
I purchased one a year ago and had no problems. This one I purchased in September 2010 and had 2 problems.
One was the cranks, left and right, were not hooked to the wheel securely. So if you hold the wheel so it will not move, you can rotate the cranks (foot pedals) around, clockwise and counter clockwise. I was sent another wheel in a week. That wheel was damaged in shipping, due to improper shipping packaging. The threads were stripped on one side. A new unicycle was shipped within a week.
The whole process took 4 weeks, instead of 1 week.
The new unicycle was fine in every way.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Not worth your time or money!, July 6, 2011
By Kimberly L Noonan
My 14 year old was very excited to buy this unicycle with his own money. Was very easy to put together but within the first 2 days of riding it bolts were broken and the tube has a leak. We have bought a patch kit and it still will not hold the air. After two trips to town and replacement tubes not fitting properly it is sitting in pieces on his bedroom floor. Thanks Mongoose for wasting our time.
