5.0 out of 5 stars.  Like a jelly doughnut (raspberry), July 18, 2008
By Steve Ruskin (Colorado, United States)
I've bought Hammer Gels for training (trail running and mountain biking) and been provided with them during two mountain races that Hammer sponsored. Hammer Gels seems to taste better than most other brands (although most flavors of Gu Energy Gel are also quite good). A serving of Hammer Gel is typically larger than other brands (1.25oz vs. 1.1oz for Gu, for example), although this does not mean Hammer Gels necessarily provide more calories (just 86 calories in a packet of Hammer raspberry, vs. 100 calories in smaller sizes from other brands). But Hammer does claim to be made with natural ingredients.

Hammer raspberry flavored gel is hands down the best flavor--it tastes like the inside of a jelly doughnut. When you are pounding up a trail or down a road, there's nothing like the thought of a jelly doughnut to keep you going...delicious!

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Good but the packaging could be better, March 26, 2008
By Trish (Fairfield, CT)
I used these for the first time today. I have the Raspberry ones and they taste great. No stomach upset, quick results and a very good boost during a long run.

However, the packaging is a bit problematic. First, the tops don't rip off easily - not fun while running. Secondly, the bottom of the package burst easily while dispensing into your mouth from the top. Out of the 3 packs I've tried, 2 of them burst. And that's with the top wide open, so it was oozing from both ends.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Best Energy Gel I've Tried, November 12, 2007
By Adrienne
I've only tried the vanilla and chocolate, but they both taste pretty good when you've been running for hours (kinda like cake frosting). More than the flavor, I've found that my runs are better with them. The carbs in this are "long chains" so they burn more slowly - preventing the sugar rush and crash that I've found with Gu, honey, and sports-drinks. In fact, I attribute my first jog over 6 miles without light-headedness and nausea to the fact that it was also my first time trying this product (I went 12 miles - and was totally fine - a record for me at the time) I used these in my first half marathon and beat my target time by over fifteen minutes! I'm not saying this is a miracle product, but I think it's the best of its kind out there. If you're serious about your endurance sport, you need to at least try this stuff. I'm psyched to discover Amazon sells it - it's not as easy to find in stores as other energy gels.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The best gel on the market for my money (pick your flavor wisely), March 19, 2011
By MedIT
Read the nutrition facts and ingredients and make up your own mind about the nutritional merits of this product. For my money it's not a PowerGel fructose bomb and tastes a lot better than Gu (Clif Shots aren't bad but I've never seen the bulk gel for sale).

On the flavor front: Raspberry >> Apple Cinnamon = Huckleberry > Banana = Tropical >>> Chocolate, Expresso or Orange. I haven't tried the others. I'd really avoid those last three. I know a few guys that like the chocolate and expresso but I'm yet to meet an orange fan.

The little packets are good for picking your flavor but once you've got that sorted out go ahead and get the Hammer Gel flask and bulk bottle of the gel. It's a much better system for serving it up for your daily run/ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The best energy gel!, June 27, 2009
By C. Claycomb (Montgomery, AL USA)
I have tried so many different products - from beans, to blocks, to gels and this is the best flavor and consistency that I have found. The texture is more like liquid fudge rather than gooey gel.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Better than gel packs, April 4, 2009
By Horacio E. Schwalm (Brandon, FL USA)
I load two ounces of gel into a flask, cut the rest with water. The gel goes down much easier this way. Since you keep the flasks, they don't leave any residue for the volunteers to pick up, and opening one of them is easier that ripping the top off an envelope. Clean up is very easy.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  no spike...or crash, September 2, 2010
By M. Macdonald (Vancouver, BC)
Of the many gels I've tried, this one works best for me during marathon training.
No instant sugar high followed by a crash, just steady energy for about half an hour. Doing a long run of 2 hours or more, I will carry a couple of these mixed with water.
Everyone is different, but this is worth a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good way to carry and use your Hammer Gel, June 20, 2009
By Stephen M. Charme (central New Jersey)
I like this bottle because it is has markings showing 1-5 ounces in both directions, i.e., right side up or upside down. 5 ounces is more than enough gel to bring with you for a 2 to 2.5 hour run or bike ride. It is easy to fill this with gel, drink the gel from the spout, and clean this afterwards. You can also easily add water to make sure you get the last drop of gel.

This is also a good size for running--not too large or heavy when filled with gel.

I like this better than Hammer's more expensive soft flask because the latter does not have markings showing the servings.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  seems to work - I'd buy it again, November 5, 2009
By gg reviews (NJ United States)
I wanted something that was not caffeine loaded, and would not make me speedy, just refill chemicals needed by a tired body without bad stuff. This seems to do it. The first time I tried it was on a bike ride when I started feeling nauseous due to the exertion. I stopped and swallowed a packet of this then started riding again. In a few minutes I really did feel better. In other words, works for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Not too thick, March 29, 2011
By scissorbill (Ellington, CT)
I tried Gu when training for a half marathon and I would nearly gag because it was so thick. I finally tried Hammer gel and this is perfect. I like orange and Montana huckleberry.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Really great product, March 19, 2011
By MedIT
My last gel pack was at the top of a 9 mile climb that came 90 miles into an 80 mile ride (thanks to poor navigation) on a 95 degree day. After pulling off the top tab I gave it a squeeze and instead of a mouth full of gel the pack exploded in my face. I'd shorted the tab when pulling it off... It was a sad day.

Anyway I've never had that problem with the flask. It's actually easier to deal with in general, provides customized serving sizes, and produces less trash. The bulk hammer gel is also cheaper (particularly if you keep your eye out for it on sale).

My biggest concern was keeping the flask clean. Turns out that the gel is actually really easy to get off of plastic with hot water from a tap.

I'd strongly recommend giving this a try if you are a regular gel user.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My favorite gel - no caffeine, October 23, 2009
By Kcirtap (North Carolina, USA)
I was looking for a gel with no caffeine and this is a nice choice (only the expresso flavor has caffeine, I think). I don't like the taste of any of them but this is at least palatable. I plan on using this gel early in a marathon, then a caffeinated one later on. It tastes like vanilla frosting on steroids.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for Runners, June 17, 2009
By Jessica M. Nadeau
I tried Hammer gel after I had several failing attempts with other gels, bars, jelly beans, and candies. My husband and I used it on our half marathon, and it was so easy on the stomach and the longevity was extremely beneficial. It tasted great and didn't make either of us feel as though we swallowed cement. I will certainly use this product from now on and encourage others to as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great Apple Cinnamon taste., May 22, 2009
By pafmarwak (OR)
I have tried other brands of Energy Gels. Hammer Gel products flavors and texture are consistently uniform and quality is reliable. They don't use simple sugars in their products so the carbo energy source is better for you and absorbed more efficiently in your system. The flavors and gel thickness aren't intense enough to give you a gag reflex after several hours of exercise while using the products.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Small Energy Boost When Needed., February 22, 2011
By Devyn Dugger (Sarasota, FL)
I have been using Hammer Gel for a couple of years now. It seems to really help when I am on a long run or bike ride. I eat the gel when I'm near my half way point. I feel a decent energy boost a few minutes after eating it. It gets the job done without making me feel jittery or weak like other "stronger" energy products do.

I wasn't a huge fan of the Huckleberry flavor. Try to pick up some single packs of each flavor at a local store. This way you won't be stuck with a case of a flavor you don't like.

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Hammer products are great, seller (Niagara Cycle) wasn't, April 22, 2010
By levi (san francisco, ca)
Ordered on April 12th and was told a delivery date of April 20th via email. April 21st I sent a mail because the product still hadn't shipped. Then they finally shipped it...standard mail vs. expediting. Poor customer service. If I am lucky, it will get about two weeks after I ordered it.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Hammer Gel Chocolate - Taste is not great., April 9, 2011
By Maria&Scott
The hammer gel works REALLY well. I have only tried the chocolate and the raspberry. The chocolate is average in taste and isn't real "refreshing" when its consumed hence the reason for the 4 stars. But of course the performance of the gel is the best I've tried. It gives you a long lasting jolt of energy without a huge drop off. Just like the advertisement says. Try the gel, but the flavor? Maybe you'll like it, but I didn't... and I'm not picky when it comes to the taste of things.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Effective and tastes good, April 1, 2011
By Joseph J Rubal (Loveland, Oh United States)
I have been using Hammer gel based on a recommendation from a training partner. The Huckleberry is the only flavor I have tried. It tastes good and is easy to swallow. It doesn't linger in your mouth as you run. Definitely provides the energy boost that you are desiring. I prefer it to the GU Gel competitive product.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Tropical Gel does contain caffeine, March 12, 2011

I bought this product because I was looking for a gel that did not contain caffeine and it states in the description that only the coffee flavoured one does. But the tropical contains 25mg of caffeine.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Huckleberry rocks., October 30, 2010
By PH
The Montana huckleberry tastes fairly good, I thought its better than the raspberry. The gel gives me a nice subtle boost while cycling, right when i think my legs are going to turn to jelly, I take a gel and a few minutes later I feel better.

Hammer makes good stuff and I switched my supplements to their brand because of the good experiences I've had using them.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Hammer Gel- a good idea to get "hammered", June 9, 2011
By E. G. Albertson
On a recommendation from an experienced rider, I ordered and tried the Hammer Gel product. It isn't the best tasting stuff in the world, in my humble opinion, but it is a GREAT supplement that takes effect rather quickly, whether it is real or imagined. I have used it on longer rides and felt a bit of a surge of energy that I needed, especially in hot riding conditions. I have also heard (and need to do this) that it is best to take additional water when ingesting the Hammer Gel product. For me, the best feature is that it is easy to pack, carry and open on a ride, and it seems to work like it is described.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  best gel I've tried, March 20, 2011
By Elsie (Florida)
I tried a few of the gels available: Gu, Power Bar. I did not like any of them as much as the Hammer Gel Chocolate. I do not want caffeine, and it seemed hard to find a chocolate one that did not have caffeine, but Hammer Gel Chocolate does not have any caffeine so this made me happy as well. I read other reviews that mentioned the bottom splitting open, this did happen to me once, but I have just been careful to squeeze from the bottom and have not had a problem since. I am buying my next 12 pack because I ran out - love this stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Espresso flavored hammer gel, February 26, 2011
By David Hamilton (Smyrna, TN)
I've used Hammer gels, gu and gu chomps on various occasions. I like the Hammer Gels best. This time I went with espresso flavored. Just gave one a test on a 15 mile long run. They are very sweet, chocolaty flavor with a coffee kick. While I really liked them, it is worth noting that this is the only flavor that contains caffeine (a plus for sum, a minus for others). I also found the espresso flavor to be stronger/sweeter than the orange flavor I had tried previously. Once again, this is a plus for me but might not be for everyone. R

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Favorite flavor, January 10, 2012
By KG
First of all, this is the first time I've seen hammer gel in individual packets. So much better than using the big bottles that tend to get gooey and thick in between rides which aren't as frequent as I would like them to be. Second, this is by far the best flavor!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Good Stuff!, November 5, 2011
By Rob R (Scottsdale, AZ United States)
I've been using the Montana Huckleberry flavor for the past 2 weeks while running. While the taste and texture are pretty good, the results are fantastic -- much less muscle soreness and cramping post workout. Certainly worth a try if you want to be more comfortable after a workout. Also, there is great info on the Hammer Nutrition website.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for running, August 30, 2011
By Sean (Corvallis, Oregon)
I bought the raspberry gels and they are great. Gave me lots of energy when I was about 8 miles into a run and I ended up making it to a half marathon for the first time. The gel packets are a little thicker than I thought they would be but for me that is a good thing because I don't have to eat it all at once. The flavor is great because it tastes like a jelly doughnut with the breading and everything but you do need to wash it down with water because of how thick it is. Overall, I would highly recommend this product!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Great flask, easy to clean and use, June 30, 2011
By Dan (Draper, Utah)
I got this product for long distance triathlons and marathons, and I used this for training and during the actual events. instead of using individual packets of my favorite energy based gel i take three of them and put them in a flask, then fill the rest with water. This is much easier than having to deal with all the wrappers. It also allows me to use as much or as little of the gel that I want at any given moment. Ill never go back to using the gel packets (unless I only need to use 1)

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Works great., June 21, 2011
By C. Macaluso (New Orleans, LA)
I use this to store my homemade energy gel in and it works great. I started with one and would refill it as needed, but now I own a few and fill each of them up when I make large batches of gel. You cannot go wrong for the price. My one complaint is that the plastic cap that comes with it to cover the nipple top is always a struggle to remove while riding or racing. I have started leaving the clear cap off, only using it when time is not of the essence.
