Unsuitable for right handed paddlers, September 8, 2010
By James Earl Carter (Plains, GA USA)
|
|
I'm completely surprised to report that this paddle is totally unusable by a proficient right handed person. The paddle is drilled for 3 twist angles between the paddles.
-60 degrees (which is what left handed paddlers use
0 degrees which is for novices and children
+120 degrees which is not usable by any human
What is missing is +60 which is what proficient right handed paddlers would use.
I'm wondering if this is defective or if they just don't know what they are doing. Novices or children will be satisfied with a 0 degree twist angle (the blades are in the same plane). Howver given the foam wrappers on the handle the diameter might be large for a child's grip.
the blades are symmetric (not assymetrically curved) and heavily constructured, but for the price this is fine. It's an excellent value if you are left handed. the construction appears to be durable.
UPDATE 1:
The company checked their inventory and discovered that all of their paddles were defective. apologized and pulled this off amazon.com for a while.
UPDATE 2: A year went by and I ordered another one. Amazingly this one is also drilled wrong. It's not quite as bad as the first one but the holes for the left and right sides are asymmetric about the neutral position. the Right handed one is now too far >90 degrees, again making this unusable by a right hander.
close inspection shows the right hand hole was drilled after the paddle was anodized since unlike the other two holes the cut hole is sloppy and edged with shiny metal.
Bottom line: you could make this work but it would probably injure your wrists if you are a serious paddler. Apparently this company has a huge quality control problems.

good option for the price, August 19, 2008
By ebuyer (Chicago, IL)
|

I bought this to use with an inflatable kayak, and I think it's a good paddle. It's a little heavy, but I'm not going long distances or trying to break any records, so for my use, it's fine. The length is ideal for the wider sides of an inflatable. It's got several click-in settings so you can pick the alignment of your blades. Nice comfy handles and drip guards. For the money, it's a great, sturdy paddle.

Too short for a man., July 22, 2009

It's just 84" paddle, not 92" as advertised and is good for kids and women but too short for a man.Stronger the person-longer the paddle.I'm 5'11" and 190 pounds and for me 96" paddle is good enough.

Good value for beginner, July 23, 2008
By B. Schulz

As my experience with kayaking is limited to quiet, pleasurable "lake" tours, I've no need to invest in an expensive paddle. The Kwik Tek is light, has different settings, hand grips and is comfortable to use. While I'm certainly no expert, it gets me where I'm going and the price was absolutely right! For me it was a great find and a great buy!

Airhead kayak paddle, May 19, 2010
By Skinz Reed (Vermont)
|
|
As an avid flatwater paddler for 20 years, I recently upgraded my kayak to a unit that tracks better and is more lightweight. The Airhead looked like a good paddle, and upon first use did not disappoint. The foam grip handles are easy on the hands, it's very light, and the curved blades make for more efficient paddling. The only downside I can note is that there is some minor flexing of the blades when pushing off--they could be more rigid. Overall, however, it's a great paddle and I'd recommend it for recreational paddlers.

Wrong Size...Not 92 inches, it is 84 inches..., July 25, 2008
By jmoospoynter (St. Petersburg, Fla., United States)
|

Both the weight and blade are OK (for the price), but the name says 92". The one I got was only 84", probably fine for some shorter paddlers.
For the record, this was written by Gary Moos, Julie's husband.

It's a paddle., May 4, 2009
By Gift Card
|
|
It's a paddle. It helps move the Kayak from one location to another. If used properly it can often direct and propel the boat once I am in it.
It snaps together in two pieces. It can be used in a straight formation or a slant position which I think some prefer.
The best part is that it has these catchers along the pole that prevent water from going down your elbow.
Also, it came in a box that could have easily fit several wide screen TVs. This I still do not understand.

You get what you pay for, May 16, 2011
By IF
|
|
This paddle is fine if your plan is go paddle around the lake (fresh water only, beyond that it feels cheap and handles cheaply. The connecting point on mine began to corrode after taking it out once into a salt water bay and rinsing it thoroughly with fresh water. I took it out again figuring I could sand and paint over the corrosion if it proved to be good in the surf. It soon failed me as it bent on a bailout without even getting stuck in the sand. Save your money.

Comfortable, lightweight, and Sturdy, October 2, 2009
By John (Elk Grove, CA)
|
|
PROS:
* Easy to assemble (snap the two paddles together) * Shaft made well of metal * Plastic paddlefins are thick plastic and light weight * Curved fin helps push water a little better * Good water blocking rings * Cushioned hand grips * Cheap price at $30 from amazon
CONS:
* Plastic may get brittle and broken if left in sun for months * Length could be about a foot longer, but it's highly manageable and not noticable by most
Overall, I highly recommend and would purchase this again. I have two for my two person kayak. Works great.

I am the second reviewer to note that this paddle is NOT AS ADVERTISED. This paddle is 84 inches long, not 92 as advertised. DO NOT ORDER THIS PADDLE unless you want an 84" (7') paddle.

Bit expensive, but not too bad, June 22, 2010
By Prince (CA, USA)
|
|
This paddle is shorter then advertised, but it suited my needs well enough.
Pros: Foam grips are comfy Water catcher a nice touch Looks and feels durable enough
Cons: Shorter then Advertised A bit expensive, this used to be 20 the button connecting the two sections might be a tad flimsy, but thats nothing.
Overall, not too bad a paddle, I recommend investing in a bit higher priced one, even for beginners

Good entry level paddle, August 14, 2009

This is a fine paddle for an beginner. If you have a wide kayak it may be a little short. The paddle is actually 84" and I don't know why the manufacturer doesn't correct the length they advertise.

I didn't expect much for the price, but the paddle has served me well for several years. It may not be the lightest, fastest, or whatever the current fad is, but it is rugged and light enough for this novice.

A solid paddle for the price, July 29, 2010
By Derek Stuhan
|
|
Considering this paddle is anywhere from half to a third the price of buying paddles at most sporting goods stores, it's a great value. The lock is firm and it has no problem staying afloat. I'd give it five stars, but I wish the padded handle was a little more padded (though it does serve well in providing extra grip).

They are super awesome! I kayaked almost every day the first week I had them, and they look AMAZING! They are so nice, they cut the water perfectly and I'm super happy with them!
One thing... the picture made them look ORANGE, but they're actually RED. i was a little disappointed, cos my kayak is yellow, but I'll be okay :)

Paddle too short for emotion kayak, September 4, 2011
By David J. Bezinque
|
|
The paddle is made well but is too short for the Emotion Glide kayaks we purchased. The Glide kayak is a sit in type with fairly high gunwales. This means you have to hold the paddle very high and at a large angle to reach the water. Both my wife and high found this to be very tiring. I extended both our paddles to 96" with aircraft aluminum tubing and they now work well. We also found that we could only use the paddle with the blades vertical. The other position places the blades at a wierd, unusable angle.

Cheap but does the job., June 25, 2010
By born-again techie (Buffalo, NY)
|

Plain and simple: It's a good entry level paddle. I'm not concerned hitting rocks or submerged trees with it. If it does break, it's cheap enough to just buy another one. Maybe some day I would buy a different kind of paddle, but when it comes down to it, it's just a paddle that stores nicely and is something I can use and not be afraid of getting scratched up.

Great beginner paddle, November 9, 2011
By Jeff
|
|
I bought 4 of these for kayaking. They are heavier than more expensive paddles, but that is expected. The paddle disconnects in half easily for storage. It will also float, although I did not test for a long period of time, it would definitely provide enough time to grab it if you dropped it in the water.

Great paddle, July 15, 2011
By ayn
|
|
I got this paddle back in March, it is a little small, but so am I so we fit together pretty well. It is only two pounds, so it is light enough to move but sturdy enough to handle water, rocks, sticks and shore. I like this paddle, but I didn't realize how much I liked it until I borrowed a friends boat and paddle one weekend. They had a thin, high priced model that didn't cut the water near as clean as this cheapo paddle does. This is a great buy.

Lightweight, Functional, Easy To Use, Tote, and Store, July 6, 2011
By Rebecca Reed
|
|
I got these kayak paddles to go with my Sevylor Inflatable Canoe because they are lightweight, easy to use, easy to tote around, and easy to store in a storage bin of my motorhome. Why am I using kayak paddles in a canoe? So that I don't have to switch paddles back and forth and so that my husband and I don't inadvertently smack each other in the head. These are nice, functional kayak paddles and work very well with my inflatable canoe.

Really nice solid paddle. A bargain., April 13, 2011
By Kim Stone
|
|
When I first received my first one I couldn't believe how nice the paddle was. It felt solid and not cheap, the padding is so nice too. The drip rings are really nice and do not move on ya like some. The blades are bigger than most and seemed to be attached very well. The paddle seems to be very light still. It is red not orange. The only reason I didnt give it all stars is because it does seem to be short. Great paddle for kids for sure or a smaller kayak. I liked it so much I did buy another from Amazon. Think I paid 32.99 at the time which is still a bargain. I have seen them go as low as 29.99. Worth the buy.

Nice paddles, great price!, December 1, 2010
By Charlie (USA)

These paddles work like a charm with my new Kayak, and they are very lightweight. I like the fact you can take them apart in the middle, which makes them easy to carry around. I think they could be a little longer, but other than that they are a nice product. Plus, the price was much better than my local outdoors store!

Great for the price. Decent paddle., September 20, 2010
By Norman Molina
|
|
5 stars for the low price of both paddles. Quality wise it's not too shabby if you're a recreational kayaker. The color of the paddles are good when others are kayaking, you can spot them from far away. The padded grip handled and drip rings are a plus including the 3 different angle positions. One thing I noticed though was that water seeped into the paddles itself. Probably through the screws that attach it to the shaft, eventually making the paddle heavier after a good amount of kayaking. I use a two man ocean kayak and 92 in is just a little short (4 to 6 more inches would be awesome). Overall, the price is great for recreational purposes and the quality is decent.

The spare that I use every time, June 10, 2010
By insomniac
|
|
I already had a Field and Stream paddle that was given to me with my kayak. About a year ago when I got a second kayak for my son, I got this paddle from Amazon. It was about half the price of what my paddle cost at Dick's Sporting Goods, but the curved blade made it much better. A few weeks before we got the kayaks out for the year, I got another one of these on sale for a spare, and after several trips, my Field and Stream paddles have yet to leave the house.

Sturdy, and a nice value, January 11, 2010
By J. Green (Los Angeles, California)
|
|
We bought these to go with an Airhead inflatable kayak, and they are very nice and sturdy. As some others have noted, the length could be a little longer, but our kids will use them more than I will so they work well for them. I appreciate that they seem to be very well made - the handles are metal and the paddle ends are plastic but overall it feels strong - and they come apart in the middle for easier transportation in the car. They're not too heavy but they don't feel lightweight or cheap, either. A nice value.

Nice, but more $ than it was, October 2, 2009
By 7saturdays (Minnesota)
|
|
This is the exact same paddle- same brand, same everything, that my husband bought for less than half the price last year. Before it was advertised as Airhead, now the Airhead one on Amazon and other sites say out of stock, but they they have the "Kwik Tek" one- however, the paddle you receive still says Airhead on it because ITS THE SAME ONE! Which is what I wanted, but I wanted it for the $15 everyone charged for it when they called it "Airhead". Other than that its a good paddle- light and good for recreational kayaking. IF it was $15 I would have given it 5 stars.

too short for anybody, September 13, 2010
By outdoorken
|
|
This would be a nice kayak paddle, but it has one serious flaw: it is too short. No matter how you paddle, the airborne blade drips water into the boat! You have to reach somewhat into the dipped side, and the blade that is in the air is over the boat, even with the drip guard all the way out to the paddle! An extension is needed that is at least one foot, and possibly two feet long. I am a long time kayaker, and this is a SHORT paddle.

Great price, nice paddle., September 3, 2010
By Kayakin77

|
Not a FULL 84" due to curved blades, that is to be expected. As stated by others, adults may want a longer paddle. You will pay $60+ for another paddle of the same caliber that breaks down, has 3 settings, padded handles, curved blades and GOOD drip-rings. Been Kayaking for a few years, bought this as my back-up/spare. Appears I will be using as my primiary though. The blades are a little softer plastic than I like, but that does nto seem to be an issue when on the water. Am very happy with the paddle for the price, shipping was VERY FAST. If you kayak more as a recreation vs. hard-core extreme rapids / strong current kayaking, this is an outstanding deal and be confident you are making a good purchase.
