In November of 1996, Planet Bike was founded in Madison, Wisconsin. In many ways, Planet Bike began as a social experiment that dedicated itself to doing business in a different way. Instead of being just another company that develops and sells products with profit as its end goal, Planet Bike wanted to help bring about positive change for people, their communities, and the environment. Despite being a simple machine, the people at Planet Bike have always believed that the bicycle has great potential to help improve the world and the lives of the people in it. From the start, they have embraced an alternative corporate purpose which seeks to help get more people on bicycles by making communities friendlier places for the self-propelled. By donating 25% of company profits to causes that promote and facilitate bicycle usage, Planet Bike hopes to make an impact. Social experiments aside, Planet Bike was born from the heart of a cyclist with a goal of making innovative, high quality, and practical bicycle accessories. Simply put, they strive to design and develop the best bicycle products in the world. In the company's short ten year history, they have made important product innovations within the bicycle industry. Advancements include the 4-line computer which is now a standard in the industry and the world's first self-contained HID light. Not bad for a company that ten years ago started as a one man operation. Today, while still a small company, Planet Bike continues to evolve and improve their product line with the goal of always striving to build accessories that make it easier for people to ride their bikes. Since 1996, Planet Bike's financial support of the grassroots bicycle movement has totaled $500,000. By 2010, they have made a goal to donate $1 million to organizations that are dedicated to making America a friendlier place for cyclists.

My favorite cycle computer, June 22, 2009
By Paresh (Herndon, VA United States)
|
|
I love this computer. I really wanted a 4-line screen for a reasonable price. I already had a wireless one with 4 lines on my other bike, but I like the screen layout on this one so much better. Line 1 has the current speed. Line 2 shows the ride time. Line 3 shows the ride distance. These first three lines are static and never change. Line 4 can cycle through the clock, average speed & max speed, and odometer. So, in one screen, I get all the info I really need. The screen is clear and easy to read. The mount is pretty good too - it comes with three different sized rubber shims so you should be able to get it to fit pretty much any handlebar width. I installed this on a 2008 Fuji Roubaix which I think just has standard-sized road drop handlebars. Installation was pretty easy, although not as easy as a wireless computer since you have to deal with the excess connecting wire. This is really no big deal, and it will pay off long term since you only have to worry about 1 battery, instead of the 2 on a wireless system. Plus, since it's wired, I never have to worry about interference if I'm riding with friends. Don't waste your money on the 2-line screens from the more popular brands that are more money. This one does everything you need!
I was surprised to read some of the other drawbacks mentioned in other reviews:
1) the battery connection is not tight, and keeps resetting the settings. I have not had this problem over the 2-3 months I have owned it.
2) The push button makes it too easy to reset the timers. I don't have a problem with this, but can see how this might be a problem. To change the display screen, you have to push the whole computer forward. A quick push, and Line 4 changes to a different statistic. If you hold it forward during a push for about two secs, it will reset the ride distance and timer. While sitting still, this will never be a problem. But, while riding, I can see how it might be easy to hold it too long, and accidentally reset the timers. On the flip side, I never need to switch the display screen since the main screen has all the facts I need (current speed, ride time, ride distance, clock).
3) Computer falls out of mount after hitting big bumps. I have mine on a road bike, so I'm not really hitting major bumps. I can't gauge how it would hold on a mountain bike that is hitting all kinds of nasty terrain. But, I will admit that the way the computer sits in the harness is not really well done. Planet Bike should probably redesign this to have some kind of latch that the user has to bend to remove the computer.
Bottom line: I highly recommend this computer.

Nice display, but could use some more finesse, February 20, 2007
By Newbie MD (Sacramento, CA)

The basics of this unit are great. More info, less button pushing and simple design. The bad parts are that the construction is not quite as solid or stable as I would like. The cable it comes with is burley & thick, which is nice, the construction is decent, but it cannot handle rough use. Every time mine fell to the ground it went blank and I has to reset everything. Turns out, the battery clips inside were too lose and the battery was moving. I bent the clips to really pinch the battery and that seems to fix the problem. Also, it resets the trip meter and such very easily, as others have noted. If you push it to scroll through the screens and hold it just a little too long, it resets everything. Also, in my pocket I often pull it out to find it reset.

This add so much to my rides. It is fun to try to best your time and average speed!
The computer itself is barebones and simple to use. It is durable and just works well! The price is reasonable and I recommend it highly!

Worked well for a while, July 21, 2007

I bought one and it worked well while it lasted. After two years the thing seems to be broken, and frequently resets on me for no apparent reason. I used it heavily and had exposed it to rain but if you buy one it may only last two years.

Protege 8.0 Computer, February 8, 2010
By Kirk (MICHIGAN)
|
|
I've own this product for about 6 years now and it has been the best in quality, reliability and durability. Best part about this product is that it will monitor two bikes, which is great now that I have recently purchase a full suspension MTB last summer. Plus when the battery dies, I can reset to original mileage of both bikes after installing the new battery. It survived rough trail riding, heavy rainfall and cold weather with ease. Changing from one bike to the other can be somewhat a hassle without the use of a ballpoint pen or other pointed object. Installation is easy for me as I distroyed a few computers before purchasing this Planet Bike product.

Great computer for the money, July 10, 2010

I just bought this Protege 8.0 by mistake. We have two of the Protege 9.0 units already and when I went to buy one for my new bike I was thinking they were 8.0s. The only difference I can see is the 9.0 also can display temperature. While the temperature display can bounce a bit at times (+/- 4 or 5 deg F), and the device is of course affected by direct sunlight (as any temperature measuring device is), I still think it's a cool feature worth the extra few bucks.
What I really like about the Protege 8.0 and 9.0 is the 4 line display which can show up to 5 different read outs. For me, this is preferred vs having to keep pressing a button to cycle through all of the various read outs. I'd rather have to glance at the display multiple times than have to pull my hands off the bars to push a button.

Very nice little tool, November 9, 2008
By S.D.Willie (NY)
|
|
I really like this piece of equipment. Everything is laid out nicely and switching modes is a piece of cake, just a push up on it. I haven't had problems with it falling off like others to be honest. I wish it came in black. My only gripe were the instructions. They said to put the fork sensor on the rear of the forks but i wasnt getting a reading at all. I had to turn it to the inside of the fork which made the magnet line up perfect. Don't go by the picture. Awesome fast shipping by amazon too! Woulda bought the protege 9 i guess if i wanted a temp gauge but that wasn't necessary.

I'm buying a different computer, September 3, 2008
By uncle freddie (Danbury,CT)

This computer is really cool in that the display is good and it tells you all kinds of data. However, if you hit a solid bump in the road it falls off! Mine fell off going down a hill at 25mph and it took me 15 minutes to find it. To my surprise it still worked. A couple days later I hit another bump going 30mph and it fell off in such a dangerous traffic situation I just kept going. I'm done with this computer.

Beats more expensive computers, April 5, 2010
By George Mayhew
|
|
The Planet Bike Protege 8.0, unlike almost every other cyclocomputer on the market, shows me everything I want to see on one screen:
Current speed Trip time Trip distance Average speed Highest speed
The last two items appear on the bottom line of the display, which can also be set to show either total miles (odometer), or time of day. I elected not to buy the next model up, which can also display temperature, because previous computers I've tried were not accurate thermometers.
I put the computer on a front wheel of my recumbent tadpole trike. The trike has a mounting point for the sensor on the right side, but the only available spot for the computer is on the left. The connecting wire is about four inches too short to span the distance, so I made an adjustable mounting bracket for the sensor, to put it within two millimeters of the magnet on the left wheel. The distance between the magnet and the sensor is critical, but not more than other computers I've used. A wireless computer would have been easier to install, but more expensive and possibly less reliable in operation. The computer had no preset for my tire size (20 x 1.5), so I entered a custom measurement. I haven't checked the distance accuracy precisely, but it appears to be good.
The display is easy to read. The method for switching functions is unorthodox, but it works. Rather than press buttons, you push the computer upwards in its mount, against a spring. Push and release to change functions; push and hold to reset trip information.
The computer does not look or feel rugged, but it is still working after a month of use and a couple of rain showers. I expect it will be as durable as others in its price range. All in all, I'm satisfied and I recommend the computer.

Best bike computer for me, September 29, 2010

I have had other computers over the years and this one is the best for the money. I had a problem with one (my own fault) sent it in. They fixed it and it has worked ever since (five years) The last one I put on my motorcyle. I works great and I get trip info. When I installed it on the computer I had to put my own magnet to trigger the sending unit.

Not perfect, September 21, 2010
By JSchneid
|
|
I have had this bike computer for over a year. My only complaint has to do with the bracket that mounts on the handlebar. The unit falls out too easily. I nearly lost it a few times. I have epoxied a paperclip to the computer and connected a cord from that clip to the bike. When the computer comes out it now is prevented from falling to the ground by the cord. The computer at times will move within the bracket thereby disconnecting from the contacts in the bracket.

It does it all, March 17, 2011
By T. Define (Annapolis, MD United States)
|
|
I had owned a number of Cateye Enduro 8 bike computers before checking around to see if I could find one which showed multiple functions on one screen. The Protege 8 does exceedingly well with all important information displayed in a easily viewed main screen. It also is easy to reset your trip information with just one push of the bottom button. And the whole computer detaches easily from the holder with just a push from the top.
The wiring is as heavy duty as the Cateye and the speed sensor is much heavier duty. Installation is straight forward and calibration for unusual size tires is clearly explained. And the price for the unit is very competitive. I've been so pleased with the Protege that I bought another one for my wife's bike.

excellent bicycle computer, February 27, 2011
By exrelayman
|
|
This is my second bicycle computer, obtained because of the failure of a cateye predecessor. I love it. Very simple to use once installed. Had read reviews before my purchase. Whoever had this device come loose by hitting a pothole either had a terrific impact or a defective device. Road riders should experience no problem. Mine is very hard to remove once in place, so much so that I count that a slight drawback. Most ladies will need a man to remove it for them, it takes a very forceful effort. Some one had also complained about the small size of the character display. I have seen a number of bicycle computers and do not know of any that have a larger character set.
There are never any small buttons to press. You always see speed, ride time, and ride distance in the first three lines. You can rotate display to show either current time, odometer, or both avg and max speeds (as shown in site illustration) on the bottom line. It always requires 3 pushes on the rear of the computer at the start of each ride to reset to zero and obtain the avg and max speed display. But this is extremely easy to do and then the entire ride can be free of lifting a hand off the handlebars unless you want to see current time or odometer.
Repeat: I love it. I heartily recommend it to anyone.

Fun addition to bike rides, December 18, 2010
By J. Myers (Dayton, OH USA)

This is my first bike computer, and I love it. It was easy to install and set up, and it works without issue. I don't mind the cable at all - there were plenty of zip ties included to ensure that the cable can be secured out of the way. The only downside is that this isn't the model with the thermometer. I didn't think I would want it, but now sometimes I do.

We bought these for our techy children and they love keeping track of their biking stats. When they get home they show us all their numbers (BONUS! We know if they really went biking or not!). The computer part conveniently detaches when you make a pit stop or finish for the day so it won't get stolen off your bike. Easy to install and use.

Handy device, August 9, 2009
By AcornMan (Denver, CO)

This is my first bicycle computer, so I wasn't really sure what kind of criteria I should be looking for when I shopped for it. I chose it based on its reasonable price compared to other models and because it had the functions I needed. And I am very happy with it. It is easy to install and program, comes with good instructions (which may not seem like a big deal, but without good instructions I would have been completely lost), snaps in and out of its bracket effortlessly, and basically delivers as promised. The one and only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it is a bit of a challenge to read the display while riding because of the relatively small size of some of the numbers. It's easy enough to read the mph, but to read the other figures I find myself leaning forward a bit to read them. I'm not sure how they could fit all that info on the display without making the entire thing a lot bigger though, so that may just be the way things have to be. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase.

No good to me on the ground!, February 13, 2009
By E. Anderson

This computer has a nice display, lots of functions, and an easy interface. Setup is moderately good, not as easy a system from sigma. But, hit a pothole in the road, and this thing literally jumps off the bike due to a poor handlebar clip design. Requires duct tape for permanent installation. Overall, no good if it can't handle the ride.

Planet Bike Protoge 8.0, October 15, 2008
By Jim (Connecticut)
|
|
This bike computer has worked out great for me. Installation took only a few minutes. One installation note is that the sensor mounts to the front fork, but not directly facing the spokes. On my bike, it is angled back about 45 degrees towards the spokes, which places it the correct distance from the magnet. I used a little blue locktite to secure the magnet. Initial setup of the wheel size, etc., takes a little patience, but I was riding within a few minutes. Now that the weather's getting colder, I'm thinking I should have considered the 9.0 model with the temperature sensor, but I'm very happy with this one. It's a great feature that it slips out of it's holder and can be stored inside out of the weather.

It worked great, until I was in the Danskin's Women's Triathlon and hit a grate in the road and it flew off! As I was in the middle of the race with women all around me I was not about to stop for it. So if you plan on never hitting a bump, it works ok.

Easy to read, simple to use, July 12, 2008
By Mark L. Robinson (Bremerton, Wa)

I just installed it on my commuter bike and it seems to work real well. I like the push forward (tap) method of changing modes and resetting. I would of given it 5 stars except for the above article about it quitting after two years. It looks a lot nicer than my Cateye, which is on my mountain bike, but then again the Cateye is about 10 years old and is still ticking. But hey, if I get 2 years out of it I will be happy, 10 years and I will be ecstatic.

Great computer, August 17, 2011
By RIPACO
|
|
I bought this mainly because it has a secure clamp mount with a screw to tighten the mount. Most bike computers now mount with wire ties. Not good. They will not hold tight. I have two of them on mountain bikes and ride rough trails. They work great. The magnet that mounts on the spoke is also the best I have seen. It is metal and has a screw to clamp it on. Other computer I have used have plastic magnet holder that mounts on the spoke and won't tighten enough to stay adjusted. It is also easy to see the screen and easy to change modes. Overall, the best computer I have used.

Great bike computer, August 4, 2011
By Scott Walton (North Carolina)
|
|
I have been using this Protege 8.0 since 2007 and it has functioned flawlessly. It is super easy to change display modes to view different info with the push of the thumb, yet I have never accidentally bumped it and changed the display. VERY good design, in my opinion. All the main info a rider may desire is right on top and stays there for the entire ride.
Installation was simple. All parts are quite durable. I like the fact that the magnet unit is steel and screws on. Some other models use a plastic unit that clips on and cannot be removed without destroying it.
I use this a lot and highly recommend it without hesitation. In fact, I just bought another unit for my wife's bike. I bought it from CATCHaBUY on Amazon. They were EXCELLENT to do business with and I highly recommend them.

This was a great price and does just what it says it will do. I love it and would not trade it for a fancier version. I can see when I am riding below my average and I can see how many minutes I have been riding and how many miles. Comes off easily to go in the house and goes back on easily and unless you push and hold for a couple seconds, it does not reset. I have been riding an old lady tricycle for 2 summers, have lost 34 pounds, dropped 4 dress sizes and have muscles and energy that I thought were gone forever. This little device helps me achieve goals that are still amazing to me. The reviews are what helped me to pick this particular one so thankyou to all who have written.

TIP: Odometer Reset Problems, Clean Bracket Guides!!!, September 3, 2011
By jta
|
|
A quick tip for those who are having problems with the trip odometer resetting unexpectedly: I was having the same problem described in several other reviews - the trip odometer would reset unexpectedly when toggling through the different functions. In my case, I found that the computer would stick just long enough to reset the odometer. At first I was ready to buy another computer, but thought to quickly clean the guides/grooves in the bracket and the back of the computer with a damp Q-tip. While I was at it I cleaned the contact points. Now when I push the computer to toggle functions, it slides back smoothly and immediately. Solved the problem and it works like new. I've had mine for a little over a year and about 2000 miles.
Functions well, especially for the price. Other than the reset problems really haven't had any issues. Only reason I would not give it a 5 rating are minor issues, like no back light and being forced to use wheel 2 setting for smooth road tires, which means you have to toggle through an extra, unnecessary odometer reading when out on the road.
I think I'll use this for another season or two, then switch over to a wireless computer with cadence. Hopefully by then they'll work the bugs out...

This replaced my original P8 that was 10-15 years old that I lost. I like the features and it works as advertised.

The thing does what it says it does. The problems are user defects. It works Great. What do you expect for $30.

Good computer. Hard to see at night and akward reset function but easy to set up and very nice otherwise. Good price too.
