I highly recommend this book for anyone, even non athletes. The biggest issue I have with cookbooks is that they always require special ingredients that one has to buy for $20 just to make the dish. Biju and Allen have made masterful dishes out of ingredients normally found in the fridge and pantry. Plus, one can experience first-hand how some dishes so complex that one usually reserves for dining out can be made QUICKLY at home.
All the suggestions for food to go is great for riding or for anyone on the go to work, ect. Since getting this book, I routinely make a dish each night from it as I usually have all the supplies already and they taste "restaurant good".
If sport is your thing. The the intro alone is worth the purchase of this book, as Allen shares complex diet theory in layman's terms for all to comprehend. One can totally rediscover the kitchen as a performance-enhancing yet delicious tool.
If you really are what you eat, then with this book you'll be fast and healthy.

Pragmatic Recipes for Active People, October 30, 2011
By A. Valentine (Ardmore, PA)

I pre-ordered this book randomly as I saw it on a twitter feed of one of the pro cyclists I follow. The book arrived the day of our first snowstorm, so it was perfect timing to try out some recipes.
The few recipes we tried from the Feed Zone have turned out great. Our first attempt was meatballs in red wine sauce, and it was excellent. The recipes in general can be made relatively quickly; I would say 90% can be made during the week. I really like the format of this book. Each item has big photo and more importantly nutritional information. The included bookmark is a nice touch too.
Overall, I would would recommend this book to anyone who wants to eat better.

Feed Zone Review, December 8, 2011

I have thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of this book. As a fledgling cook and serious amateur cyclist, this book has been a treat to read and use. It is very readable and presents the recipes in a straightforward manner. I love the nutritional information it provides and it has exposed me to many new, but common ingredients that I have gotten to spring on my family...much to their delight. The book is formatted in a very helpful way, breakfast section, post ride recovery food, dinner, deserts, etcetera. I have not stopped recommending it and will be giving it as a gift to fellow riders and non riders this holiday season season.

Great recipies but not sure this was proofread, March 9, 2012
By Flyer (East Hampton CT)

After waiting for this cookbook to arrive after being on back order due to popularity, I was anxious to dive in and try some of the recipes. They all are presented well and the photos make your mouth water. Finally some good and simple food to eat while training. The first try was "Biju's Oatmeal" and it was great, even my 16 yesr old son liked it. The Orange Almond Macaroons were next, but after following the recipe exactly, the finished macaroons were dry and nothing like the photo. I think that most of the recipes are accurate, but I do think there are a few where there was a little more proof reading to be done. All in all a great book, but if you are preparing something and the amounts do not look right, follow your gut..no pun intended.

Practical Options, November 17, 2011
By Carl (Sandpoint, ID United States)

I really like this cookbook. I've been following Allen Lim for sometime and was excited to see his book, which I had preordered. I'm glad I did.
I have a couple of athlete inspired cookbooks (some from VeloPress) and they all tend to have unusual ingredients. In our young family household, we just don't have them and I never remember to add them to the grocery list. Yes, I could plan ahead, but who has time for that with kids?
This cookbook is very accessable in that many of their recipes are built from stuff we already have around the house. For example, they have a fantastic pancake which is leftover rice, eggs, milk, banana, and some other stuff that you mix in a blender. Everyone loves them. Simple to make and I have everything I need.
It has become my go-to athlete inspired cookbook.

Finally a cook book for the serious cyclist., November 4, 2011
By Todd B Eppley (SPANISH FORK, UT, US)

I am so excited to get cooking. I have been making Allen's rice cakes for years from a recipe I found on YouTube.com. To have this recipe and so many more is great. Dr. Lim puts so much science and thought for the athlete into everything he does. All of the dishes look beautiful and I am certain that they will be beneficial to my training and competing.

Feedback, December 26, 2011
By Mark
|
|
I bought the book for my wife for Christmas. However, I fully intend it to be my go-to cookbook for the very little cooking I do around here. I've tried the Biju's Oatmeal (I overdid the molasses) and the Fritatta with Red Pepper Oil. There is an error in that recipe - I think the amounts of olive oil and bell pepper are reversed. Once I corrected that, it was great. In a new book like this, it would be good to have a place for feedback to the authors (here?) so that mistakes can be corrected.

Delicious stuff and pretty easy to make!, February 5, 2012
By Wreckinball

I don't often make reviews on Amazon, but this was worth it. I've tried a few recipes so far and they've been pretty, well, great! I think I need to get a different rice to make the rice cakes, but it ended up being great as a breakfast when reheated. Alan Lim also has a drink mix which is sooo much better than anything on the market, skratchlabs.com.

This is a great book, March 4, 2012
By Rod

What everyone else is saying is so true. The dishes are usually pretty easy to prepare, with common ingredients, that taste great, not overly expensive, and are healthy. What more could you want? We have made the fish tacos several times and they are the best we have ever had including from nice restaurants. Biju's oatmeal receipe that includes bananas and raisins is becoming a staple of mine for breakfast. Tired of eating energy bars on long bike rides? The portables section has receipes for other items (rice cakes) that are a nice alternative. I can't recommend this book enough!

The Feed Zone is great for people from all walks of life!, December 3, 2011
By MaryKM
|
|
Being a student its hard to find recipes that are nutritious, tasty, easy to make, and affordable all at the same time- and I've found The Feed Zone Cookbook to meet all those needs! The book is filled with a great variety of recipes that include each of the dishes nutritional information, which I find beneficial. The "portables" section are especially helpful for when I'm on the run to classes, and when I don't have enough time to cook but still want to eat a healthy and substantial snack. They are easy to pack and carry for long hikes or if your going snowboarding, or whatever your choice of activity. Of all the recipes I've made so far, the Chicken Tikka Masala and Allen's Rice Cakes are definitely my favorite!

I purchased this book due to being a fairly serious cyclist. In my review I was excited to see such easy to put together recipes. My wife also looked at it and commented on how easy it would be to put together these wonderful meals to help prepare myself and others for rides or races. I am looking forward to better eating and better riding.

Full of tasty & easy to prepare recipes; not only for athletes., January 1, 2012
By TyCrow

I made Allen Lim's famous rice cakes years ago and loved them. When I heard this book was coming out, I knew it was a must have. The recipes are performance oriented, taste fantastic, and are easy to prepare. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants good food that is easy to prepare; it is not ONLY for athletes. It helps if you are an athlete, because meals are designed by Allen and Biju to suit certain purposes. Also, you do not have to be a master chef to create the dishes. My favorite recipes so far are the toasted nut mix and oatmeal. Two thumbs up / A++!

A must for every serious athlete, January 10, 2012
By Dave Vannette

In this cookbook, Allen Lim combines his extensive experience in helping elite professional cyclists maintain effective nutrition for top performance with the culinary expertise of Biju Thomas. The result is a cookbook that provides a wide range of healthy options for athletes looking to fuel their bodies for sport. I received this book for Christmas and within 3 weeks have already prepared several of the recipes and have found them to be creative and delicious. I highly recommend this book for any endurance athlete.

Love this cookbook!, January 6, 2012
By Erin Wheeler

I got this for my husband for Christmas. He is a hard core cyclist, I am not, but we both love the recipes in this cookbook. The best part about the recipes is the simplicity of ingredients, how quick and easy they are to prepare and of course, how good they taste. We've made a new recipe almost everyday since he got the book and we've both really enjoyed them all. I can't say that about any other cookbook I own. I can't say enough good things about the book!

I've started implememting a few of the simpler recipes into my race day routine. The oatmeal is terrific and substantial. The waffles and ricecakes are a GREAT alternative to all the processed gels and bars. The best part is that my issues with leg cramps have vastly dissipated. I have nothing else to attribute this breakthough to than the change in food!

I'm a cyclist - and that's what drew me to this cookbook. But this excellent book stands on its own - even for those who have never thrown a leg of a bicycle. The recipes are delicious, wholesome, yummy, creative, and very easy to make. And the book itself is a work of art. I own a lot of cookbooks and this one is among the best I've purchased!

Great cookbook, healthy and easy, May 9, 2012
By J. Tingey

|
Just wanted to echo the praises that the other reviewers have given the book. I'd seen one of the recipes on a cycling blog and after trying it decided to pick-up the books. I've just made a few of the recipes and each one has been fairly easy to make and very tasty. There aren't any really exotic ingredients, other than potato or rice flours, but you can find those in most good supermarkets these days in the gluten-free sections. And it doesn't cost a lot of make them either. My favorite so far are the buffalo sweet potato tacos. Just an awesome combo of flavors! I'm looking forward to trying more recipes and using this to help power my riding going forward.
