Product Description:

There are bicycles. And then there are Italian bicycles. As with high fashion or sports cars, when the world speaks of racing bicycles the conversation soon turns to Italy. Seasoned cyclists know that an Italian bicycle is more intimately yours, a more personal possession, than a bicycle of other origin. Italian bicycles are built to race with passion, and to win.

Italian Racing Bicycles traces the rich history of 40 landmark brands intimately connected with racing. Not surprisingly, the brands have deep roots, some tracing their lineage back more than 100 years to the early days of the velocipede. They also share a hunger for advanced technology, pushing engineering to new heights with exotic metal alloys, elaborate weaves of expensive carbon fiber, and aerodynamic studies that help their bikes and riders cheat the wind for greater speed.

Beyond these commonalities, though, the stories diverge. The restless inquisitiveness of Ernesto Colnago could not be more different from the methodical calm of Ugo De Rosa, for example, and yet these two iconic frame builders contributed immeasurably to the racing victories of the great Eddy Merckx. The passion for experimentation of Pinarello, the brazen creativity of Cinelli, the barrier-bursting hour machine of Moser?in search of racing victories, the volcanic inspiration of Italian artisans has repeatedly reshaped the dynamics of cycling.

Melding painstaking historical research with personal visits to each artist?s workshop, author Guido P. Rubino has unearthed the stories, the methods, the dreams, and the personalities of these cycling firms, large and small, that have contributed so fundamentally to the glory of the sport.

The brands: 3TTT, Alan, Ambrosio, Atala, Bianchi, Bottecchia, Campagnolo, Casati, Cinelli, Colnago, Columbus, Daccordi, Dedacciai ? Deda Elementi, De Rosa,Ganna, Gios, Gipiemme, Guerciotti, Legnano, Masi, Miche, Milani, Modolo, Moser, Olmo, Olympia, Passoni, Pegoretti, Pinarello, Rossin, Scapin, Selle Italia, Selle Royal?Fi?zi:k, Selle San Marco, Somec, Tommasini, Torpado, Universal, Viner, Wilier Triestina.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  I'd Buy a Second Copy as a Gift for a Friend, October 4, 2011
By Cycling Coach (San Diego, CA United States)
Italian Racing Bicycles. The People, The Products, the Passion. 40 Historic Brands.

* It's a book of memories. 40 years ago I bought my first Italian bicycle, a Torpado (it was bright yellow). Then a Bottecchia, a Colnago, a De Rosa (red). Masi, Pinarello, and Somec came into my life. the book is not only about frame builders, but other Italian bicycle-industry companies and stories. Cinelli double-toe straps. Universal center-pull brakes. I look at the images and my life on two wheels replays in my mind.

* It's a book of history, with details of some 40 well-known Italian companies. Background I didn't know about when I first bought those bicycles; background that fills in gaps, brings even more warmth and color to the brands and my memories.

* It's a gorgeous coffee table book, with many high-resolution color photographs--where the detail of every tool-stroke comes into relief. Where classic Italian design and style can be appreciated, even by those who don't have a cycling background.

I am happy to add it to my library.

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Missed the Mark, October 2, 2011
By Ozy Mandais (Left Coast)
Italian Racing Bicycles misses the mark....To many "Giants" of the bicycle industry missing. The Book's focus is on some of the majors, but leaves out the artists that made Italian bicycles so sought after....To forget the masters like Sante Pogliaghi, Gino Milani, Franco Sabatini, and brands, CIOCC, Frejus, Fanini, Picchio...is to do a disservice to the glory and history of Italian bicycle manufacturing...and I left out a lot of other names

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Italian racing bicycles, November 25, 2011

A beautiful book, a nostalgic trip for an Italophile. As usual, delivered on time from Amazon. A tribute the craftsmanship and design found in Italian racing bicycles and components.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great coffee table book, March 22, 2012
By Cindy
Beautiful book, just like the bikes within. Didn't give 5 stars because the expected brands had more information than I really wanted, and some of the obscure brands (that I really wanted to know more about) had so little information provided they weren't really justified in being included.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My passion, October 17, 2011

A very beautiful book, one that will have you drooling over the bicycles. The information is well presented and illustrated and it makes a nice coffee table book. If you're into biking or know someone who is, this is one you'll pour over the pages again and again and it makes a nice gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  A trip through history of Great Italian framebuilders and component manufacturers, October 6, 2011
By Dominic Mancello (New York, New York)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The photos are high quality and the paper in the book is thick quality stock. I have been riding bicycles for close to 30 years and have several custom-made bicycles. I especially appreciate lugged steel frames made by master craftsmen such as Peter Weigle and Richard Sachs.

I found this book to offer a rich history of many of the most significant Italian bicycle frame builders and component companies. Each of the 40 manufacturers is profiled to give its origin to current day operations. There are many beautiful photos of older bikes (including champion's bikes) as well as some modern bikes. You will learn about the founders of each company and how it has progressed through history. There is much written about the relationship of each company to champion bicycle racers and specific stages of the great European races. While interesting, I would have also appreciated more information and photos of each companies current bikes/components.

I suppose one can complain that not every significant Italian manufacturer is present in the book but I believe that the 40 profiles gives a good respresentation of Italian craftsmanship in the bicycle industry from it's beginnings to modern day.

The book is layed out in alphabetical order by company name. At the beginning of each profile is a 'box' with the company name, founder of the company, the year the company started business, address, telephone number and web address. The company name is indexed at the top of each page to quickly find the manufacturer.

Definitely recommended for fans of bespoke bicycles and fans of the great Italian contribution (both historical and modern) to the bicycle industry.

3.0 out of 5 stars.  Just OK, November 4, 2011
By KDS14601
I think they should have included more photos or the classic bikes pre 1985. Too many pictures of new models. If I wat to see the latest cf wonder bike I just need to pick up a mag or jump on the computer.
