4.0 out of 5 stars.  a sufficient guide for a great trip!, July 23, 2006
By Rachel E. Fish (Fort Wingate, NM United States)
My boyfriend and I just returned from cycling a loop around the Netherlands, starting and ending in Amsterdam, completing about 1300 km. This guide was almost perfect. Widing's descriptions are very detailed, and she recommends great sight-seeing. We loved the cue-sheets - sometimes the roads were hard to figure out, so knowing the exact numbers of kilometers was very helpful, and handy for ripping out of the book to put in our handlebar bags. Widing also does a great job of recommending places to eat and stay for a variety of budgets. There were a couple of gaps between routes if you want to make a loop; Holland's designated bike routes easily bridge those gaps. I recommend getting an ANWB map of those routes - this will also help you to visually plan out your route. We had a lot of trouble with the Drenthe part of the book; it seemed out of date and/or confusing. I would also recommend more detailed maps of each region, because the maps for each of Widing's routes are not detailed enough. Overall, this book was very helpful and helped us to have a low-stress, interesting, and fun cycling vacation.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  An exciting guide to exploring a nation where one can travel virtually anywhere by bicycle, February 4, 2006
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA)
Printed and bound for extra durability on the road, Bicycle Touring Holland With Excursions Into Belgium And Germany is an exciting guide to exploring a nation where one can travel virtually anywhere by bicycle - just as the natives do. Written by an Australian-born journalist who has toured the Netherlands by bike for many years, Bicycle Touring Holland covers pre-departure planning, basic information about the country including language and money matters, food and lodging issues, basic cycling facts, the best routes and sites in various parts of Holland, tips for further reading, and much more. A wealth of black-and-white maps clearly marking travel routes adds a definitive touch to this "must-have" for any cycling enthusiast visiting Holland.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  You canot do better than this book, August 1, 2009
By B. Taylor (Eindhoven, NL)
We live in Holland and use this book to create our own tours for when guests arrive. It has all the details you need and wonderful route recommendations. I would never be able to do this so well on my own, even as a local.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Bicycle Touring Holland, December 31, 2010
By Gary J. Kelly (Chapin, SC United States)
We are planning a vacation in the Netherlands and want to do several one day bicycle trips on our own. This book is very informative, with good explanations of the bicycle rules, path signage and safety issues. It has many trips highly detailed, with signage, sights along the way, distances from signpost to signpost and so much more. I think it'll be great for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  More about Katherine Widing, September 16, 2011
By Barbara Chamberlain (Spokane, WA)
If you're interested in learning more about Katherine as a person, she's profiled talking about her biking, her bike equipment, and a little about what she encounters on her tours on the Bike Style Spokane blog under the "On a Roll with" section. (Amazon removed the direct link that was provided to the review.)

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good book, February 22, 2011
By vale
I think that this is a very good book, it gives you advises about everything you may need.
I think it's more helpful for people outside Europe. Europeans already know or don't need many of these advises.
I haven't used the book yet in Holland. I've got my trip scheduled for the end of April, but I'm sure I will take it with me.

One thing that I miss in this book is dynamism...It gives you only determined routes and as if in my case you've already decided and planned your trip, so you don't have the cue sheets to guide you through your ride.

Anyway I think it's the best book about cycling in holland you can find.

Enjoy your ride!

1.0 out of 5 stars.  Our Experience with this Book, April 30, 2012
By DavidB
I planned our recent cycling holiday around the trips in this book, planning to follow the detailed routes as identified by the author. Our main tour was from Groningen to Mippel through the beautiful countryside of Drenthe. The author gave turn-by-turn, view-by-view cue sheets and so we planned to copy the relevant sheets from the book, attach them to the bicycle and not have to worry about our cycling itinerary. Little did I realize how many problems we would face. Almost right out of the train station in Groningen, we had to make a right turn at "LF14a bike path dir. "Haren," #14323". There was no sign on the road and the sign for Haren didn't appear for about 100 meters after the turn. The only way we found the sign here and in many other places was by asking. Other problems included turns clearly noted in the book which did not exist (like a right turn .1 km after a railroad tracks where there was clearly no turn). After the first day, the owner of a Hotel in Eext showed us how to use the Fietsroute Netwerk and our troubles ended. This network, specially designed for cyclists, is ubiquitous, easy to use, takes one through the most beautiful parts of the countryside, and is often completely separate from cars.

My only question is why didn't the author base her tours on the Fietsroute numbering, rather than difficult-to-read and -see street signs. The only answer that I cynically arrive at is that you can't very well right a cycling book for a country which is so set up for making your way around on a cycle. You would be better off creating a blog entry or a pamphlet. My recommendation to anyone planning to cycle through the Netherlands is to go to [...] and plot your own routes.

This book was worse than bad, in that we lost significant amounts of time because of it.
