More good writing from a unique and gifted author., April 7, 2011
By Jay W. Lundgreen (Portland, OR)
|
|
Neil Peart's latest offering, Far and Away: A Prize Every Time, stays true to the author's established vision. While an argument could be made that most of the writing here isn't original to this work (most of it comes straight from Peart's personal website) it is an argument that doesn't hold much weight. Having first read most of the material as it appeared on line I have to say that new life has been breathed into it in this new and refreshing presentation.
Aesthetically, Far and Away is Peart's most impressive book to date. The photography is a mix of beautiful sights, or interesting insights, but more importantly always relevant to the writing. This book is a labor of love and it really does come through in the physical feel and presentation.
Peart's writing is a lot like his musicianship. He has an established style, but it isn't stagnant, it is a living breathing thing. Part of the fun with this read is not only being taken on the journey through the events in the author's life, but also on the journey of the author's relationship to his own craft. The end result is a new layer of intimacy to his prose. Peart, though somewhat shy, has never been so as an author, which is one of his greatest strengths. And though the proverbial floodgates aren't wide open in this work (which is for the best) regular readers of his material will have the sensation that, with this book, the doorway into his life and times has been opened just a crack more.
Peart's writing usually makes me want to go buy a motorcycle and travel the country, but this time around it has left me wanting to start keeping a journal. And that's one of the best parts about a new Peart book, like the title suggests, it's a prize every time.

Neil Drums Up Another Awesome Solo, April 20, 2011
By Sandra Foster (Brookhaven, NY)

Q: Why should I buy this book when I can read Neil Peart's blog for free?
A: 'Far and Away' includes additional essays not included in Neil's excellent blog. They blew me away, sprung tears of joy and pride in my eyes, and made me laugh out loud.
Neil ascends further into the pantheon of great writers with stand-alone packets of stories filled with the usual adventure, geology lessons, and humor in his writing. My favorites are "Under the Marine Layer" and "The Ballad of Larry and Suzy", where he shares his thoughts and feelings of becoming a father again after losing his only child (and first wife and even his dog in 1997). This is not `The Motorcycle Diaries' or the kind of fluff designed to sell to the lowest common denominator of reader. Neil used metaphor wrapped in everyday Southern California events and some lucky circumstances (his friend's daughter is named Selena and she shines an enviable facet in his prose) to tell the story.
It's an interesting read if you have no idea who Neil is, but as a Rush fan it's delightful to share bittersweet life on the road and the hilarious interactions with bandmates Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee.
In an April 2011 interview with Neil by Jim Ladd of KLOS Jim wishes we could see `the infectious gleam in his eye and smile'. Wishes come true in 'Far and Away'; it's filled with pictures (mainly taken by Neil) who has an artist's eye for composition. My only regret with the book is some of the non-professional photos, particularly ones taken on overcast winter days, would shine better with a little enhancement. Neil's probably used to the brightness of photos lit by a monitor; print immediately snuffs them. The art director could've said or done something--Neil's a writer, not a Photoshopper.
I love a blog, but I love a book more. I took 'Far and Away' on the train to the show at Madison Square Garden, and when I finished I hugged its linen cover with copper foil title and smiled deeply. Nothing like a book.
I hope his agent sends this to The New York Times. Neil's ready.

Another Excellent Travel Log from the Professor, April 4, 2011
By William Dunn Jr. (Boston, MA)
|
|
This book is very high quality and not just the writing. The paper it is printed on has great feel to it, the pictures are clear and clean. The writing is as good if not beter than what we have come to expect from the man behind the drums of the world greatest band. Highly recommended as a Travel Log even for people who are not RushFans(tm)

Just to let you know... most of the content of this book is from Neil Peart's website blog, even a lot of the photos are repeats. I was hoping for all new material, but I do like all of his internet musings are gathered together and printed. Still worth it if your a Peart fan for sure!!

Peart plagiarizes himself and dupes fans, May 12, 2011
By Kris
|
|
As stated before, Neil suavelessly incorporates in this book a significant amount of writing and photography from his personal website- which was once free to read. Now he has shamelessly decided to charge for this regurgitation after deleting it from his site. By the way, this is the same person who publicly despises his admirers- and at the same time this grown man feigns shyness and discomfort with anyone who attempts to convey respect and admiration toward him. Neil has abandoned his integrity in favor of profiteering. In fact, he will never engage the public (fans) unless it involves financial compensation.

Interesting and Entertaining Snapshots into a Unique Talent's Life, October 4, 2011
By j.guynn

Far and Away is the third Neal Peart book I've read; I started with Ghost Rider and followed that up with Roadshow. I knew Far and Away was a compilation of stories from Neal's website, but I like having a book in my hands. In many ways some of the stories are just as emotional as Ghost Rider though not as 'dark'. The fact that a man who makes his living "hitting things with sticks" has such keen and humorous insight makes Neal an excellent writer. It is obvious that he is much more than just a world class drummer.

Travel Log's from Neil, April 25, 2011
By David Carlin (Philadelphia, PA USA)

Wonderfully written account as usual from Neil.
I took notice and I didn't want to take points off for this, but it the logs seem to be taken word for word from his website updates so I imagine this project was more painless than writing the book from scratch.
Well done otherwise since I haven't regularly checked on his website writings. Neil is a superb at writing travel essays.

Well Written with Broad Appeal, July 3, 2011
By Judith Gaines

Far and Away; A Prize Every Time is part travelogue, part personal memoir and part motorcycle adventure, with philosophical insights to pull it all together.
This will be a hit with Rush fans, but also for anyone who has traveled a long road filled with obstacles, fear, exhilaration and satisfaction. I recommend this book to anyone who loves travel, motorcycles and thought provoking observation. I find that I read and re-read some passages because there are layers to the message that I don't want to miss.
The writing style is beautiful and engaging with just enough photos to make you feel like you're riding the same road.
In fact, there were literally several roads through the eastern US which he mentions in the book that I have also traveled and have to agree, they are quite beautiful.
I loved this book enough to purchase the kindle and hard cover editions.

Another prize for me., June 7, 2011
By elaine plumb

I am very bias , so take this review with a grain of salt. I have read 4 other books by Neil and I always enjoy them. Rush is my favorite band and my husband and I enjoy traveling by motorcycle (with me as the co-pilot). We love nature and we always try to visit National Parks when we can. So this book,as with all the other's I have read by Neil, was everything I enjoy. And I really like the happy ending. I was sorry it was over, as I always am. Ok the parts about drumming where not all that interesting to me but I read them and gain more insights into who Neil is. If you have read Neil's books and liked them you will like this book also.

AWESOME!, May 13, 2011
By pk 2112

Unnecessary to say that Mr. Peart is a living legend of drums.
However the feeling and insights you will find inside this book will take you elsewhere.
If you like motorcycles, nature, beautiful landscapes and - most of all - words carved with fine skill, you will treasure this book.

Neil Peart's latest writing foray, May 11, 2011
By Nisee
|
|
First of all, I been a Rush fan since I heard their first song "Working Man". Now that I have that out of the way, Neil Peart's latest book release Far and Away: A Prize Every Time is in my opinion an absolute gem. It details the ins and outs of everyday living, life of going on the road in rock band on tour, and the little things that change your life forever in a moment. Mr. Peart's book details the everyday things of life on the road with genuine elegance from the morning breakfast stop in New Hampshire, to a bus breakdown near Las Vegas.
Mr. Peart rides his motorcycle to the shows that he plays, as he describes the scenery he passes, conversations with fellow motorcyclists, and the history of the area that he stops at, the techinical gitches in the GPS devices which results in he and his riding partner at least once or twice getting lost and finding their way out.
He also descibes life's little joyous moments of the birth of baby hummingbirds, to the anticipation and being there for the delivery and birth of his daughter, Olivia.
His book brings the gift of a smile every time I read a passage or turn a page.

Once again Neil proves how strong of a writer he really is. This was thoroughly enjoyable reading and every bit as good as Ghost Rider. Although many have complained that most of it was also on his blog, most people (myself included) don't read the blog and prefer to read the "old school" way.

Much more satisfying than a website!, May 30, 2011
By Gypsy Caravan (Northern Minnesota)

|
I too have followed Neil's travels on his website and marveled at the way he paints with his words. I also knew that when his travelogues became available in a tangible fashion (i.e., book) I would purchase it with absolutely no hesitation. There is something satiating about printed paper and photos between hard covers that cannot be had on a website. Neil knows this, and I believe has even addressed it at some point in his past writings. I personally find this book enjoyable and fulfilling, and even though I have read much of it before, it comes to life in a whole new way when you hold it in your hands and let his words flow into you and through you... the way literature was meant to be enjoyed! My KUDOS to Neil Peart!

Another fantastic book, May 12, 2011
By Maria F. Schwartz

|
After reading other Neil Peart books I have come to expect very descriptive thought provoking type literature and his latest book Far and Away a Prize Every Time certainly delivers. I love how Neil describes in such detail where he is at any given time in words and pictures. Makes you feel like you are there also. This book like others has a bit of Wit thrown in and it's nice to get a chuckle once in awhile. Also, it's nice to read Non Fiction type literature that at times can be hard to believe as to what has happened to Neil at a moment, that you almost think you are reading Fiction. I find it amazing that a Rock lyricist and Drummer can write a book that is real life and at the same time very entertaining. I can't wait to read his next book, whenever it comes out.
