This book is not just a workout. It is a complete health program.
Dave Randolph has a comprehensive view of fitness.

The nutrition section has changed my way of thinking, as well as my diet.

This is a personalized program for all levels, beginner to experienced athlete.

Dave stresses the importance of rest and cycling your training, in addition to
warm-ups and cool-downs. These have become essential parts of my fitness program.

Dave has been my instructor for over seven years, and the results are amazing.
I have arthritis, which limits some of my abilities, yet at 50 years old, I am in the best physical condition of my life.

I highly recommend this book.

I have spent 7 years in the army infantry, now I am a police officer trying to get onto the SWAT team, I do know a little bit about working out. Believe me when I say that this program IS BAD FOR YOU!!! you do the same exact workouts every day, you do a total body workout every day. It is working out 101 that you let your muscles rest after working them out, that's how muscles get bigger, you break them down(by working out), then you let them rebuild (by resting and eating properly). You are not supposed to do deadlifts every day. I was duped by this book and the reviews but don't buy it. Save your money and do the workout of the day (WOD) at crossfit.com.

I really like the concept of this book. That is why i bought it. The good thing about the book is that it goes into full detail about every single exercise. The exercises take up about 85 percent of this book. What I dont like is when it comes to doing the actual programs there is very little instruction on how to decode the format they have it written in. There are things I get confused about when going through the program. If you want a book with a wide variety of programs and tons of knowledge about high inensity training. Go for mandf's 101 high intensity workouts for fast results.

Could of used better charts and pictures to explain some of the movements. Good information but only if you are aware of most of it before reading this material. Doesn't seem to have much focus but wondering around instead of a linear fashion. It is ok but requires more reading and going back and forth to understand then should be necessary for a book that is 128 pages long.

Spartan Warrior Workout by Dave Randolph is an intensively complete book. It takes the basic premise of the "300" workout, and expands it into a complete, balanced fitness system.

For those of you who have been in a cave for the last several years, the movie, "The 300" is about the Spartans. The actors in order to portray these supreme warriors were required to train with Mark Twight of Gym Jones. This workout, also called the 300, tested the actors and stuntmen to their limits. In this valuable training manual author, Dave Randolph, successfully organizes massive amounts of material on technique, equipment, nutrition, warm ups, flexibility, mobility, and template design, into a readable, usable, format.

Dave uses the foundational exercises and develops each component into a variety of movements to accommodate individuals of varying fitness and functional levels. There is enough material here for the raw beginner or a member of an elite special response team. The organization is superb and the photographs are clear. Dave practices what he preaches and appears as one of the models in his own book.

I'd highly recommend this book for anyone that needs to get "Action-Movie Ripped in 30 Days"!

The very thing that made this book worth it for me was the design of the workout itself. It's very well balanced and the optional circuits get me drenched in sweat. I'm on day six of the harder of the two workout schedules (there's a 30 day for beginners and a 30 day for intermediate-advanced) so I can't say about the results of the 30 days, but you get out what you put in no matter what program you follow or make yourself.

The nutrition info was just a reminder to me (Lots of veggies, fruits, lean meats and no "whites" like bread ect.) but can be helpful to those new to a minimally processed/organic diet. The exercise descriptions were done well with pictures to aid as well as some basics on yoga, joint mobility and some self massage with various items.

If you follow this program, you'll workout almost every day. The workouts basically divided into 6 categories with the 7th being a finisher type exercise. (sled pull, burpees, and farmers walk are a few examples) Some days you'll rest some categories and work harder in others, so you don't work the same thing hard everyday. The categories come from the 300 workout which can be found in many places using Google.

Overall it's great for beginners, intermediate, and advanced athletes that want to keep a strong foundation (GPP) or even those who just want to try something different for a month or two. I am personally use it to mix up my strength and endurance training as well as hit some weak muscles that I've neglected through doing just push-ups, pull-ups, ab work and running.

Do buy if:
-You need a well rounded fitness book and can handle challenging yourself

Don't if:
-You're expecting this to be an easy magic formula to get you ripped without putting in hard work everyday.

It's nothing revolutionary. It's just a book that takes principles that other people have used to get in shape and presents them to you in a way that works for those willing to put in the effort.

I was looking for a way to shed fat fast and look better.
I have +6 years of lifting experience and find this book not so much helpful.
Workouts are not so clear to follow and requires equipment not available in any commercial gym

This book is a great reference! Coming from a background in martial arts (focused in Brazilian Jiu jitsu) and hitting the gym fairly consistently for several years now I am always looking for ways to improve and alter my workout program. I have become interested in more full body movements with the intention of cutting back time spent at the gym while improving my functional fitness.....this book and program was perfect for me.

The book provides two separate programs that can be scaled for any athlete so don't be discouraged if your starting from a lower level of fitness. The explanations for the exercises are written in a very clear and concise way with accompanying pictures that break down each movement to assure that you are using proper form. The way the program is designed allows you to safely and effectively condition your body to complete the very challenging "300 workout". In addition the author provides instruction on kettlebell movements including variations on the swing, squat, and press. The joint mobility sequence was also very useful. It is clear once you begin reading that the author is very knowledgeable and meticulous with his technique.

I highly recommend this book!

I've been working out for years doing the same old workouts. The last few years I've been looking for different workout books to try. I stumbled upon this book and 'yea, right, look like a Spartan?' that's goofy. But I tried it. The book offers a good mix of workouts for daily routines for 28 days. yes you'll do 100 pull ups in a single workout followed by 100 dead lifts. Very fun, very fun indeed. Try it, you'll like it. A great break from the routines of other books. Plus kettle balls are fun to toss and catch.

This workout is not for the couch potato, folks dealing with injuries or rank beginners. However, if you've got some decent and recent training experience under your belt and want a tough program with a lot of variety, give Dave's "Spartan" workout a shot. Done with a training partner, this program would make for an interesting challenge.

If you're not quite ready for an intense program, Dave's book still provides a solid breakdown of a broad range of exercises. Noteworthy are a top-notch pull-up progression program and an excellent warm-up/cool-down section, which make this book a worthwhile purchase for those two points alone.

If you have already been doing any Gym Jones or Cross Fit style workouts then I don't see this book being much use to you. I bought this book in hopes of learning some new kettle bell exercises and routines. Overall, I would say this book is good for the beginner to intermediate level person that is still new to the body movement, "higher" intensity style workouts. If you know your way around the gym and have been using body movement and kettle bell exercises already then I would look for a book with more advanced workouts. I'll be VERY surprised to see many people get "Action - Movie Ripped in 30 Days" from this book!!!

The things that set this book apart are, versatility and simplicity. Everything is written and illustrated in a way that could be easily understood by a novice or quickly referenced by a pro.

The programs are well designed and efficient. Dave also gives accurate and concise information on the diet and lifestyle changes required to get the maximum results from your training.

This book is a resource that you can return to again and again as your ability and knowledge increases. Dave has done an excellent job of assembling the exercises so that there is always room for individual adaptability.

If you're serious about becoming "Spartan" strong, this is the book for you.

Warning: Before starting this workout regime please understand that you must be entirely dedicated to its program in order to achieve intended results. With that being said, this book is fantastic. As a very experienced athlete and weightlifter, I recognize good exercises when I see them. I like to build my own workouts by taking small principles or individual segments from other routines and piece them together for optimal results. With the Spartan Workout, that process has already been done for me. It combines the muscle confusion of P90X (to avoid plateauing), heavy weights of power lifting origins, olympic lifting style movements and stretches, and optimal nutritional guidance. The book is designed to slowly progress you along the path to being able to complete the "300 Test." It can get you results if you are a first time weightlifter, or experienced veteran with its tailor-made workouts. Every day leaves me feeling sore and accomplished.

On the downside, some of the expectations are a bit impractical. The program calls for a diet consisting of locally grown produce and meat, purchased and eaten often. No processed foods of any kind and many other "bad" foods can make this expensive and time consuming to maintain the diet. The workouts also call for a very wide range of equipment that most health clubs should have, but unless you work out at some kind of elite competition gym it is unlikely you will have access to a tractor tire and kettle bells.

It is a great workout, but be warned, for optimal results you should throw your complete trust and faith into the entire program. You may not be ripped at the end of 28 days as the cover advertises, but you will notice great results within a week. After 1 month you will be a different class of athlete, and once you complete the second level routine in the book you should be built like a spartan warrior.

I've been working out seriously for about 8 years now and this book has taken me to new maxes. It really gives a new explosive look to your workouts. It's not for people who want to have huge show-off muscles as much as it is to have explosive power.

From the diet plan to the workouts, their is no fluff in this book. Spartan Warrior workout gives you classic kettle bell exercises, Paleo style nutrition recommendations and much more! Packed with routines and easy to follow, this book is great.

I have many books in my fitness library, as I like to cross train with Ross Enamait, crossfit, sealfit,etc. I keep things constantly evolving as my training is geared towards overall fitness and being able to sustain power and control in fights I may encounter at work (law enforcement). The book has a solid system for you to not only complete the Spartan workout but have a fairly competitve time as well. I started with the level 2 program and after 5 days took a day of rest and then tried a "mini spartan workout" to guage if there was anything worth noting. Completed the entire workout but used 25 reps of each exercise (same prescribed weights and movements) instead of the 50 and finished in 10:40. Was tired but not exhausted and went on to complete my day at work. That to me was impressive (the book's strategy not my performance) there were days in the first 6 that I could have done more or wanted to do less but he seems to have a formula down pat. I am continuing with the program to completion and am working on fitting it into my night shift schedule. I also plan to use variations of the daily plans and other suggested exercises in the long term.

I appreciated the extra info on tire flipping, sledge hammer work and some kbell exercises I didn't know how to do. Pictures and explanations are well done and referring back to things in the book is easy.

This workout is a beast. It calls for working out everyday and I quickly came to realize that after about three days I would need to take a day off to rest and recover. That being said when I finished my entire body was lean and fit. My core was as strong as it has ever been. My advice is take it at your own pace and don't be afraid to take a day off to recover becuase in the end you will still get incredible results.

I want to start out by saying that the Spartan 300 Warrior Workout is a very well laid out program. I really liked the nutrition and supplement section and the jm/cool down sections. These sections are almost worth the price of the book by themselves. I also like the beginner progressions for the pull-ups and the beginner program in general. While I don't think a complete beginner could jump right into this workout I do believe someone with some prior knowledge could start off nicely with the beginner workout (Program 1).

Program 2 is challenging but not so much that one couldn't complete without some hard work. All of the lifts and movements chosen for this program cover all bases for physical development, gaining strength and getting well conditioned. Not to mention "Getting Action Movie Ripped in 30 Days"! This program is a lot of fun as well.

All exercises were very well demonstrated and explained in The Exercises chapter of the book which was followed by the excellent Joint Mobility, Dynamic Warm-up and Cool Down chapters mentioned previously.

The only drawback I have seen with the program, and this isn't that big of a deal, is that a lot of people may not have access to some of the implements needed in the GPP portion of the program. I am speaking specifically of tires and the prowler. These can be worked around so it's not a huge deal.

Overall I think Dave Randolph's Spartan Warrior Workout is a great program for building strength and conditioning along with a very developed and proportioned physique that is useful and not just for looks.

I highly recommend this book.

Provides something new and is a great workout regime. The only downside is that you have to have sleds, tires, resistance bands and a duffel bag. Being in the military we were able to get most of the equipment at ease. But once obtaining this and following the workout plan you can have an excellent workout.

i've been doing this regiment on my deployment (Army National Guard). this program and nutrition got me from strong and bulky to cut up, flexible, fast and hella strong. for me the best way to do this is 3 days a week (mon wed fri) and running 3 days also (tue wed thur). this will surely burn fat fast and build muscle and stength. but it will not make you like Muscle Mag big. it will make you strong neurologically.

downside! workouts are more than an hour long if you dont pace yourself right. and if you go to quick with the workout, you will fatigue quick!!! you'll NEED to have access to a gym with kettlebells, tires, and sandbags to get the most out of this program. but besides that, it will have you sweating! especially with the kettlebell circuits.

good investment if the equipment is available.

I love this book. I've been running and working out for years and have even purchased a certain govenors books in the past. I like the flexibility and guidance it offers. After working out for years and getting bored and slacking then coming back from new angles I like how this book lays out a plan, tailors it to your level, and then has options to change it up. Nutritional advice was a bonus. I've made improvements physically and don't have to work for as long as I've had to in the past. My girlfriend has enjoyed the difference too. To put it simply dude, if you're reading go ahead and but it you'll be glad you did.

Now that the "Spartan Warrior" fad has mostly died, this book should be cropping up in all sorts of used bookstores soon. If you can get it for cheap, pick it up and have a look; it's got some great ideas in it. Dave Randolph is a brilliant trainer, and it shows.

However, this book suffers as it tries to tie into the 300 movie. It starts with the workout that the actors (allegedly) did and works backward from there, doing different workouts every day. I can definitely support the emphasis on variety and the idea of a "benchmark" workout appeals to me, but the 300 workout itself isn't very well-designed. It takes a variety of functional movements and awkwardly fits them together. While that is the point of the workout, there's simply better out there.

I use this book as a "bits bin" for my own training plan. There's a lot of great stuff in here, but there's a fair amount of chaff too, unfortunately.

Gotta confess I was basically drawn into this book by the double kettle bell guy (which is used for other health/workout products on the web) and the fact that the workout is supposed to similar to the workouts that were done for the movie 300. In the inspiration department, as in I can get ripped like the Kettle Bell guy, this book gets 5 Stars, in the clearness of explaining the individual workouts I would say 4 or 3.5, the downside is the layout of the workout charts for the 2 workout programs basic and advanced I think are a little on the cryptic side. And this is coming from the standpoint comparing this book to others like7 Weeks to Getting Ripped: The Ultimate Weight-Free, Gym-Free Training Program, You Are Your Own Gym: The Bible of Bodyweight Exercises, and the excellent Men's Health Workout books; The Men's Health Big Book of 15-Minute Workouts: A Leaner, Stronger Body--in 15 Minutes a Day! and The Men's Health Big Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Stronger, More Muscular YOU!. Most of the exercises in this book don't require the use of a Gym of (a plus in my book), but do require access to some free weights, a couple kettle bells, a pull up bar, and weight bench, so if that describes a Gym for you then you will need a gym. To follow the full program (which is the point of buying the book) there are some exercises that require access to a barbell, and the advanced appendix has some Tire flipping exercises you can do in your spare time (yeah right!). Overall I will say I like the explanation of exercises and the 300 message of this book, which gave a little background on the real Spartans, but the programs may be difficult to follow for some who isn't used to following a Interval training routine.

I really enjoyed this book. It totally changed my way of fitness training. The results were excellent. By following the advice in this book, I went from a string bean at 145 lbs to 165 lbs of muscle. The book introduced me to the use of kettlebells. I am now a certified kettlebell instructor under Pavel's kettlebell organization. If you want to really get in shape, then read this book and follow the great advice. It works!

"Spartan Warrior Workout: Get Action Movie Ripped in 30 Days" offers a one month program of exercises to get a better body.

You do need equipment, including a barbell, kettlebells, and dumbbells. Dave Randolph, the author, also recommends lifting chalk for better grip and a sandbag.

There are two programs, with the first one for the beginner and the second one for the already fit. It is the second program that is to get you ripped like a Spartan.

Mr. Randolph divides the exercises into 6 groups and he uses a basic group of exercises to get in shape. Here are some of the exercises.

Pull-ups
Deadlifts
Kettebell swings
Push-ups
Rows
Bench press
Clean and press
Squats
Windmills
Burpees
Floor wiper
Box jumps

It is a quick read at first. But I had to read it again in order to study the program schedules and terms more closely. It does get a bit complicated and confusing.

Many of the photos are the size of business cards or smaller, but they are clear and sharp. Photos are black and white. I personally would have liked larger photos in color. Although young people may be fine with the font size, I would have liked the program schedule fonts or word size to be larger.

This book provides a great blueprint to get you going on the road to functional fitness. The workouts are basically a build-up to the 300 workout used by the actors in the movie 300 to get into shape. Each exercise is well described and includes pictures to show the technique. If you can't do a certain exercise, there are progression exercises to help you achieve it. Obviously, you can customize it to your needs but as it is, the workouts are very good. It really shows what can be done with a few free weights (kettlebells)and your own bodyweight. Highly recommended!

The book is great because it gives you an exact schedule of what to do every day. Not only does it tell you what workout to do, it also tells you how hard you're supposed to go, for how long, and other things along those lines. For the workouts, it also shows you how to do each one and explains it in detail. All-in-all great workout book.

Spartan Warrior Workout: Get Action Movie Ripped in 30 Days is an awesome book. The progressions from beginner to being able to do the actual "300" workout are logical and effective. Dave really does a great job of instilling his vast knowledge of different methodologies into a simple scheme. With the addition of a warm up, a cool down and nutrition, the reader has everything he/she needs to get Action Movie Ripped. I can't recommend this book enough! Get it!

First of all, in response to the guy complaining about training every day and seemingly knowing it all about workouts, apparently he couldn't be bothered to actually READ the book. It clearly states that you should do FOUR workouts per week. Regardless of the breaks or consecutive days, no more than four.

This is a very well thought out book that has a great deal of good information as well as a plethora of individual exercises and workout routines. The instructions are fairly clear for the exercises, and the diet principles are sound. My only real issues with this book are that some of the exercises are a little bit ridiculous and the charts are somewhat open to interpretation.

The exercises: tire flips, sled pushes, sledgehammers, etc. all require special equipment. Some real-world alternatives to these exercises would've been great since not everyone lives on a farm or has a giant MMA gym in town.

The charts: some of the charts aren't very descriptive. There are some sections that designate multiple sets, but the exercises are per-limb. I.e. does 6 sets of dead cleans mean 6 sets per arm or six overall (3 sets per arm). Also, some exercises are listed in sections right after one another, and I'm unsure if these are to be done in supersets or just consecutively. I guess the charts could benefit from a little better description.

Other than that, this is a solid book that will totally destroy you. I'm ten days in and loving every second of it. If you're not looking to work hard, find another book. This is like an extreme P90X but without all the wasted time and overhead. Very well done.
