5.0 out of 5 stars.  A Collection of Sunday Calvin and Hobbes Cartoons, March 28, 2003
By A Customer
I grew up on Calvin and Hobbes, so I'm a little biased when I say they're one of the best--if not *the* best--cartoon ever to be printed. It's such a pity that they're gone, though books like this one will give fans like me an opportunity to make believe that they're not.

"The Calvin and Hobbes Lazy Sunday Book" opens with Calvin's 10-page adventure as Spaceman Spiff, interplanetary explorer extraordinaire, with one mission in mind: to destroy all aliens, which in real life, are disguised as his mother and Susie. Very funny stuff. Yet Calvin's wild imagination doesn't stop there. For the rest of the colorful 100+ pages, he agitates his parents mercilessly, particularly his father; while with his mother, he aversely chokes down every disgusting meal she cooks, making some of the funniest faces while doing so. A lot of times, his expressions say more than any number of words. Take the family meal scene on page 30, where he makes a long-drawn-out attempt at tasting the green pile of gunk on his plate. Then there's a good facial example on page 104, where he's sitting, reading a book; then looks up with this absolutely wicked smile on his face. You can only imagine what he's up to--and it's definitely not safe.

Then come the metamorphosis strips where Calvin pretends to be every imaginable type of creature, from a loudmouthed sparrow to a hungry dinosaur to a human slinky and beyond. And, of course, there's always a worthy battle or two with monsters and bedbugs in, around, and under his bed--all in the faithful company of his favorite toy tiger, Hobbes.

Two of my favorites in this book involve snowmen. Yep, you guessed it: the one where Calvin creates a morbid snowman display on his parent's car--one of them appears to have been hit by the car, while the other three snowmen gawk at the maimed body (p 53). The other is where he makes a dozen or so little snowmen and then devours them all in a dinosaur frenzy (p 101).

No matter how times I've read this book, I can re-read it again and again, and still find something new and amusing about it. Even if you're vaguely familiar with Calvin and Hobbes, I highly recommend purchasing this book. It's a riot.

If you've got other collections of C&H I'd advise you not to bother about this one, because all it is are collections of strips from the other series. apart from that it contains pictures with great colour. Iwould recommend this to first readers of C&H

5.0 out of 5 stars.  It Is all Colorful Art, September 8, 2006
By The Review's the Thing (Columbus, Indiana, United States)
If all the other Calvin and Hobbes books I have are excellent, then surely this one must be great. All the comics in this wonderful collection are in color, and are rendered incredibly well. If you thought the original Sunday comics were good, then you'll love the rich color of these.

This book opens with a 10 page mini-story about Spaceman Spiff, Interplanetary Explorer Extraordinaire. The art in this story is very good. I think that Bill Watterson was born in the wrong era. He would have been much happier in the era when Sunday comics were permitted a full page to tell a refined story, where the art was rich with detail.

Once into the book you get a collection of comics that originally appeared in Sunday newspapers. While the humor level varies, most will make you smile, and some will give you laughs. It would be impossible to describe the variety of stories, but a couple of examples will help.

In one story Calvin has glued paper feathers to his arm in order to fly. Consistent with Bill Watterson's father's profession (he's a patent attorney), Calvin tells Hobbes that he will get the patent when his device works. Hobbes gives Calvin a heave over a cliff with predictable results. Hobbes advises Calvin, "Don't sell the bike shop, Orville."

For a Mother's Day related strip, Calvin has created a Mother's Day card, including a poem he wrote himself. Included in the poem are comments regarding the size of his allowance, and the poem ends with a request to get out of bed and cook breakfast. His mothers comment? "I'm deeply moved."

This collection is filled with a variety of Calvin and Hobbes staples. Calvin the dinosaur makes several appearances, there are a variety of snowman comics, there are a number of with Susie Derkins, and frequently these strips feature Calvin's usually bizarre viewpoint of life. Given the quality of the book, the longer length of the strips, and the full color, I consider this book to be a very good value, particularly when you consider other graphic books of similar size. Bill Watterson has been a consistently good writer and artist, and each of these full page, full color strips will be a treat for fans of the series and anyone else in need of a smile.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A fabulous book full of vibrant comical genious!, September 18, 2001
By luisdent (Manchester, NH United States)
Every strip is in full vibrant color. (a sort of water-color look) Calvin and Hobbes find many great adventures here. From Spaceman Spiff to throwing slush-balls, one part ice, one part hard packed snow, at Susie. Calvin is the source of all of Hobbes' jokes, and vice-versa. It is a book to settle down with by the fireplace. (or a dim lit room) You'll laugh, and you'll wonder what you would have ever done without having the experiences of these two loveable characters in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  My Very First Calvin and Hobbes Experience, January 19, 2005
By Artturi Viita (Tampere, Finland)
Six years ago this book was my very first introduction to the world of Calvin and Hobbes. I had seen these comics in the newspapers, but for some reason had never really bothered to read them. Needless to say, this book changed all that.

Calvin is a 6-year-old with a rather imaginative mind. He spends his days imagining himself as a dinosaur, a human bug, a space hero or a superhero. Hobbes is his stuffed toy tiger, an imaginary friend (or so it seems...), who has a rather funny philosophical take on Calvin's doings. Other important characters include Calvin's mother and father, who sometimes have it tough trying to put up with their son, and the neighbour's girl Susie, one of Calvin's main "enemies".

Basically this book consists of various Sunday strips, each the length of one page. In the beginning of the book there's also a 10-page short story about Spaceman Spiff, one of Calvin's many alter egoes. No former experiense with the comics is needed to enjoy this book.

Calvin & Hobbes is definetly one of the funniest comics of all time. Along with the Far Side, Matt Groening's Life Is Hell and the French Asterix comics these books manage to make me giggle aloud every time I read them (which can be quite embarassing when you have company).

But the Calvin and Hobbes books are, I think, also somewhat more than just a good laugh. Mr Watterson has a wonderful ability of going inside a child's head and seeing the space monster in the neighbour's girl or the time machine in a cardboard box. His characters feel very real, and at times, remind you of your own childhood.

I guess that's why these books also have such a strange sadness to them, because always behind the corner there lurks the awful possibility that Calvin, too, will have to grow up someday.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A must-read!, November 13, 2000
By Eric J. Hughes (Lancaster, PA (USA)
Bill Waterson is argudably one of the best comic writers out there. Even through his retirement, he has made great books of past comics featuring his Calvin and Hobbes characters. I laugh and laugh at these comics he creates and I sometimes wonder how he comes up with such brilliant ideas sometimes with the storylines of some of the strips.

Calvin, one of his best known characters, is the trouble-making kid in the school. He is funny and imaginative and likes to make funa and games with his "real" pet friend Hobbes. Through the comics, you can see the relationship between a stuffed animal and a human.

In this comic though, Hobbes "comes to life" in Calvins eyes. The things that Calvin can sometimes get involved in is so hilarious and sometimes out of this world.

I guarantee that anyone that loves comics will fall in love with this one and should definitely buy this book to start their collection of classic comics.

All of Bill Waterson's comic books are very well done and very professional. His work is his life and it shows the time and consideration it took to make these characters come to life. Thank you Mr. Waterson for creating such a great comic and thatnk you people for reading my review!

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Great for a rainy day, February 20, 2003
By Anna Klein
Calvin and Hobbes are certainly funny, no doubt about that. When Calvin isn't getting in fights with his good old stuffed tiger, he's making up wild scenes in his head to correspond with whatever domestic indignity is being foisted upon his six-year-old sensibilities.

Still. Some of the cartoons get a bit repetitious and I found myself skipping through to the endings for the punch line, since I already had a good idea what the middle was all about. True, each page contains only one comic, which allows time for story development, but when you've already read the same story five times, it gets old.

If you're snowed in with the kids (or stuck volunteering in a library, like me), the Lazy Sunday book will help to pass the time.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Sit, Relax, and Enjoy, November 5, 2002
By Alan Attebery (Arlington, TX USA)
For those of you who have never met Calvin and Hobbes, let me help bring you up to speed.

Calvin is a 6-year old kid whose best friend is his stuffed tiger, Hobbes. At least, the tiger is stuffed when anyone is around. When it is only Calvin around, Hobbes comes to life and gets into all kinds of mischief with Calvin.

"The Calvin and Hobbes Lazy Sunday Book" is a collection of the Sunday Calvin and Hobbes comic strips from the late 1980s. You can enjoy watching Calvin hit Susie with the perfect slushball, Calvin daydreaming about the Nagoon Mothership, or Hobbes sneaking up to suprise attack Calvin.

For anyone who grew up reading the Calvin and Hobbes comic strips, this book is perfect for sitting back, relaxking, and enjoying a nostalgia look at our favorite kid and his stuffed tiger.

4.0 out of 5 stars.  Good, though repetive, September 25, 2000
By Pouncing Fossa (Salt Lake City, Utah)
This book is basicaly a volume of favorite Calvin and Hobbes strips, published in color. This is excellent coffee table material, though perhaps not quite suited to the more serious Calvin and Hobbes fan. If you own one of the other ''straight up''[ie not diagonal] collections, these are reprinted from these books, with only a three page new story. Worth it for the first timer, not as much for the devout.

This was my first Calvin and Hobbes book out of all the books that I have so far. I got it because I won a handwriting contest in second grade. I'm now in fifth grade and every time I get straight A's I get another Calvin and Hobbes book. I currently have 11 of them.
I like it because it has a huge story in the front and it has all Sunday comics in full color. It is one of the best works of Bill Watterson. If you're a fan of him or Calvin and Hobbes I suggest you get it.

well, basically, i was expecting new stories from calvin & hobbes but this is simply a collection of all the colored stories of calvin and hobbes from the others books (authoritative, indispensable, essential) if you dont have the others books, it's fine otherwise you may be very disappointed as i was. anyway, calvin and hobbes stories are always funny ;) could be good as a gift for someone who doesnt know yet calvin and hobbes.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  worst book in the collection, still cant give it less than 5, December 12, 2000
By "boy_wonder" (egypt)
i don't recommend this book to all of you who like Calvin and hobbes its for the collectors only i think, if you want to buy a Calvin and hobbes book i suggest you try any (Calvin and Hobbes Collection )coz the small strips are much more fun to read and together with the sunday strip ,they make more sense

i cant say this book is bad or even isn't great any Calvin and hobbes book is a treasure but is the most unuseful one coz it's a collection of the Sunday strips witch are already in all the books nothing is new , they just put it all together and printed it in color, any way this is a must have for every calvin and hobbes collector.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  I miss these guys so much, May 14, 2004
By Rocco Dormarunno (Brooklyn, NY)
Calvin and Hobbes was by far one of the most creative comic strips of the 80s and 90s--right up there with Bloom County and The Far Side. As a matter of fact reading this brilliant trio was a daily ritual for me.

But there was a perverse sweetness (I can't explain what that means) to Calvin and Hobbes that the others lacked. This collection, THE LAZY SUNDAY BOOK, features many of the best. Each time a look through it, I laugh out loud like an idiot. The overall effect, however, is nostalgia. There's nothing as good out there now, and I miss my trinity of comic geniuses, but Calvin and Hobbes the most!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Unabashed Watterson admirer, August 10, 2002
By Samuel Krikorian (Charlotte, NC United States)
It is my feeling that Bill Watterson had enough integrity and ethics to prevent the syndicate from cranking out endless meaninglessly repetitive compilations. Of course, he did quit partly because he was becoming disgusted with many of the commercial aspects of his work. With most comics, even good ones, the collections get stale after a few. Watterson's collections dont. There are a dozen or so C&H compilations/collections, but you wont be dissapointed with owning the whole shebang, especially since Watterson frequently did a lot of extra work to ensure that each collection had something new to offer. Even without this extra stuff, Watterson's body of work is extensive enought to warrant owning all these collections. He was steadily cranking out great material for a decade or so, and if you are like me you will be reading some C&H weekly for as long as you are on this earth, so tons of books is not a bad thing. Basically, I wholeheartedly reccomend all the books. If you like one you will like them all. They only get better as you get to know the characters. Watterson never goes for the cheap laugh by having any of the comic's principals act out of character. As you progress through the years with C&H, and I do reccomend reading them in order, you will see how art progresses and grows when the artist is committed to excellent work. So, go get the first one, titled simply Calvin & Hobbes, and then start down the enjoyable road to making Calvin and his tiger a pleasant little chunk of your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Calvin and Hobbes in Color, April 24, 2010
By Author of The Mischievous Har.. (San Francisco, CA, USA)
I love Calvin and Hobbes. I can't tell you how many times I was feeling down when I was little, picked up a Calvin & Hobbes book, and was almost instantly transported to a better place full of laughter and smiles.

With the possible exception of the master collection that came out a few years ago, this is the only book in the series that is done in full color. All of the strips were taken from the Sunday comics, you know, the comics that got more space than their respective slots for the other 6 days of the week.

This series is a classic creation. It is about a not so popular kid and his over active imagination, which created his best friend, Hobbes, who in real life is a stuffed tiger. The mischief that Calvin gets into, and Hobbes' clever commentary are one of the many things that make this book (and series) priceless for children and adults of any age.

Darien Summers, author of The Mischievous Hare, a children's book.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Calvin the imaginative, May 27, 2007
By Shredd (Edinburgh, Scotland)
This collection takes place mostly in summer/fall and the theme is around lazy days and Sundays as well. My favourite panel in this collection is when Susie and Calvin are playing house and begins: S: "Darlinggg, I'm home! And I brought a surprise!" C: "Let's hope it's a divorce!" I still go off into spurts of laughter at that one... **LOL** Enjoy (in full page and full colour) the adventures of Spaceman Spiff to a max here. There is also a lot of "pouncing" which I thought would have been more appropriate in Homicidal Psycho Jungle Cat but....nevertheless 5 stars for a great strip that never gets tired!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  Fun, Fun, Fun, February 7, 2006
By (retired librarian) (Poinciana, FL)
What a treat, 126 large pages of Calvin and Hobbes comic strips in full-color. Having this book means being able to read and re-read your favorites. There are even a couple I'd like to frame and look at every day.

Bill Watterson does such a great job getting inside a kid's head and what a kid. Calvin's active imagination creates imaginary worlds, monsters under the bed, and bedevils his parents and Susie who lives down the street.

Hobbes comes alive when he's alone with Calvin, but reverts to a stuffed tiger when others are present. Their conversations are inventive, philosophical, and sometimes just silly. It's great fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars.  On how the lazy sunday book is good and all others also are., January 31, 1998
By A Customer
I would rate this one of the best Calvin and Hobbes books ever written because it has all of the best Sunday cartoons. My personal favorite would be the one where Calvin is pretending to be a airplane pilot trying to land before the other air liner.another good one is where calvin comes home from school and sneaks around the back and scares Hobbes so he wouldn't get pounced on. This book also shows a funny cartoon about spaceman spiff in the front. So I would say that is a very good Calvin and hobbes book and another good one is the essential Calvin and Hobbes. but I would say that all Calvin and Hobbes books are the funniest cartoons I have ever read

Though not the best of all the Calvin and Hobbes books, this book still brings together a collection of great comics. The jokes in this book are really good, so that makes the book really funny. There are no obnoxious coments or sick things in not just this book, but the whole series. This book is really good for reading especially on rainy days or on days when you have nothing to do. This book is definately worth the price it is offered at.

All the Calvin books are so cute. These are well made for the price and will be shared with family and friends.

We can't seem to grow up and we are in our 70s.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  The Calvin & Hobbs Lazy Sunday Book, October 26, 2009
By morning glory (Hannibal, MO)
My Fiance and my Dad both like Calvin and Hobbs and I got them both books for x-mas. It is nice to see grown men laugh out loud and say "Come see this." Keep them coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars.  A perfect little well-- Lazy Day book!, May 3, 2009
By Reflective Artist & Product Designer (Lodi, NJ)
These are a great collection of Sunday toons. You can open it anywhere and just jump on it... It is all in color and perfect!
One thing; in case you are wondering it is a paperback, even though it is not specified. Still a great collection!

I'm a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan so I cannot really give a very objective view.... but I really liked the book and is EXACTLY what I want to read on a Lazy Sunday!

2.0 out of 5 stars.  Calvin and Hobbes, February 10, 2010
By calvin and hobbes fan
The book was supposed to be used, but in very good condition. On the cover, half the color was missing, at least one page had been written on, and the title page fell out upon opening. I just expected it to be in better condition.
