About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.

Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens' tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

5 out of 5 stars.  Very good - do not waste time shopping, July 15, 2009
Only comment: they should add holes in the hitch-mount piece so that it could be adjusted as close as possible to the vehicle (given the space available) .

5 out of 5 stars.  bike rack, February 12, 2009
Haven't found a better buy. Best bike rack around. Works for the car, van, trailer, or camper. forCycling was very helpful, and we got free shipping. Great buy.

5 out of 5 stars.  Just the ticket!, December 22, 2008
This bike rack is just the ticket for me. When mounted on my truck I am still able to raise and lower my tailgate without removing. Just what I was looking for at a great price.

4 out of 5 stars.  Sturdy bike carrier, but not quite as stable as one might like, November 28, 2008
We bought this 4 bike carrier to use on our Jeep Wrangler (which, of course, has a rear-mounted spare tire).

Overall the rack is very good. The J-shaped mounting bar has ample automobile clearance - even from large off road spare tires. In my opinion, though, the large horizontal and vertical distance from the rear of the vehicle to the bikes on the rack creates a bit more on-road sway than is necessary.

As a work-around, I secure a nylon strap (left over from an old weed trimmer) between the spare tire and the rack to eliminate in-motion sway.

Again, a very good value for the price - just one small issue that is relatively easy to remedy.

2 out of 5 stars.  Rubber is cheap and breaks down, July 7, 2008
The contstruction and ease of use is very good with a pickup truck. Loved it for the first few years. However, the rubber material that the tube frame of the bike actually rests on does not hold up. I've had mine for a few years but really haven't used it that much and the rubber loops where the straps go through are all coming off. This will eventually lead to the inability to secure the bikes.
