Driving is the new smoking., July 9, 2010

This book is pure gold! The first part is focused on reasons why you should give up your car (there are plenty), so if you're already convinced, there might be nothing new for you here. However, the second part of the book really gets into the details of how to make a car-free life work. I found lots of ideas here that I hadn't considered before. Once I read the chapter "Rental Car Weekends" I was convinced that I can do it. I'm starting off by going car-lite (no driving during week, just on weekends) and so far I've found hardly anything that I can't come up with a car-free alternative for. For the most part, I can do all the same things I do now with a car, but the timing is different -- some trips take more time, and other trips take advance planning. However, I'm convinced that the reduction in flexibility with my errands would be fully compensated by the enjoyment I get from walking and biking, and all the extra money in my bank account from getting rid of our cars!

Convincing, and somewhat useful., October 20, 2009

After reading this book a few years ago, my wife and I went car free and have more time and money and less stress because of it. Sure, some might argue, this works for us because we live in a city near our jobs, schools, grocery stores, etc., and have access to a good public transit system, and are healthy enough to be able to walk or bike most of the places we go. But as this book points out, htese things don't just happen - they are choices we make in our lives. When you choose to buy a house with a bigger yard in the exurbs for less money than it would cost close to things, you are choosing to spend more hours per week in and more thousands of dollars a year on your car(s). Whenever I hear people complain about commuting, I realize this book opened my eyes to the fact that they chose to commute by making it less of a priority in their choice of home/job/kids' activities/ pattern of life. Proper decision making is difficult among assumptions, and this book does much to deflate the false assumptions of need, savings, and convenience which make us think car ownership is essential.
P.S. Car-sharing services like Zipcar make car-free living even easier if you choose to live in an area that has one.

Great Inspiration, October 10, 2009

There's nothing earth-shattering in this book. Most of the information is fairly common sense, perhaps 50% you are already conscious of, and the other 50% will make you say,"Oh, never thought of that, but it's actually pretty obvious." But when it's bundled all together in a well-ordered format that includes the author's own story of going car-free and lots of testimonials it makes for a very convincing argument. After reading this book not only will you see that it is possible for you to live without a car (and why that's desirable), you will also know all the steps to get you there.

Good for car owners, not so for already car-free, July 6, 2009

I've been car free all my life due to visual problems. If you CAN drive & are considering giving up your car, this book provides you with facts on how much your car is costing. If you're already car free for whatever reason, you're not going to learn anything but a few snappy comebacks from this book. He's right on a lot of things though, Americans ARE brainwashed into believing they need cars, and that just isn't true. Just don't gawk when you see me on my Segway & run into the driver in front of you.

This book is fantastic! I read it from cover to cover and I will be putting a lot of his tips into practice. The amount of money you can save not to mention the health benefits will make reducing my dependence on a car worth it! Buy this book if you want to know the benefits of living without a car :D
