Had this bottle for a year....still going strong., August 21, 2010

I've owned 2 CamelBak stainless bottles for over a year. Water bottles are an absolute must in the hot desert of AZ and we use ours every day. - Keeping the water cool: Today it was 106'F. I filled a bottle 3/4 full of ice, added water and it stayed cold for hours. - Wide mouth - When unscrewed, the mouth is wide enough to fit ice or to quench my thirst when I want a lot of water all at once. - The bite valve is handy. I can take a drink when doing other things, such as driving, which I would never do with a twist off cap. I can keep it at my desk without worrying about a spill. - Condensation does occur. ALL water bottles, especially metal ones, generate water condensation. This one is no exception. I pop mine into an open gallon plastic bag when I put it in my purse. - Leaking is no fun. The bottles have been known to leak if left on it's side. I countered this by placing a rubber band on the bottom thread part of the bottle. When I put my cap on it tightens into the band creating a truly waterproof seal. To some that might seem annoying but I don't mind. Our Nalgene bottles came with a blue, rubber seal to do the same thing - make it leak free. That's where I got the idea. - Handles the dishwasher great. I disassemble the lid and toss all the parts and bottle in the dishwasher. - There is no metallic taste, even after the water sits for a day. The first few months the water would taste a little "plastic-y" from the straw but I haven't had that problem in quite a while. Maybe the straw needed to be washed several times? I have heard you can get stainless straws, but I haven't looked into that. - Holds up to abuse beautifully. We have bumped, dropped and banged these bottles. The decorative paint is still new looking and there are no dents. My friend's Klean Kanteens are a mess with dents and peeling paint.
Overall, I really like this bottle. It does the job and I would buy another one.

Just get the plastic model..., July 27, 2010

The only "advantage" this has over the plastic model is that it may be more aesthetically pleasing.
The plastic model is dishwasher safe, insulates a bit better (with less condensation), is see through (water level), and doesn't make as much noise(less "clangy").
Aside from that, the bottle does work great. I would recommend just getting the plastic one, unless for some strange reason you NEED stainless steel.

Great bottle, July 14, 2010

It took me some time to figure out how to split the seam on the top of the bottle when I first purchased it. I didn't realize that it was somewhat sealed when I first tried it out. Once the split was open, then the water came out great! I actually tried to pull the top part off, thinking it was some sort of a cap. I realize once you have this item, you'll know how to operate for future purchases, however, it would be nice to have some sort of description. Also, I'd like a description of how to clean the bottle. It has a straw that detaches, but I don't think the rest comes apart. So the liquid kind-of just sits in the top nozzel?? Haven't had any issues about it yet. Really like the way the top nozzel doesn't leak at all!!!! Bought one for my child too, and they drink just fine from it. My husband wasn't sure about the biting part of it, but I think he is beginning to get the hang of it now! I'd buy another!

I've taken this bottle on only a couple of hikes through the woods of NC, so I can only speak about its performance in the short term. The seal on the cap was good, allowing no leaks, and the bite valve worked well. This bottle is a little bigger than I expected, which is fine if you need a lot of fluids. But because it holds a lot, it can be heavy when full. I would have preferred something a bit less bulky, but this model wasn't available any smaller. It doesn't fit in all bottle cages on bikes, either. I thought freezing the bottle filled with water would ensure the water would stay colder during a long hike than it would with a few ice cubes dropped into it, but that turned out to be a mistake. The straw and the water in it ended up frozen solid and clogged with ice, making the straw non-functional for hours, until all the ice melted outside the straw first, then inside the straw. I had to open the cap to drink the cold water from the slowly melting ice. You can't freeze the water without the straw in it, because the straw cannot be inserted once the water is frozen. I had better luck freezing the bottle with the cap and straw in place just long enough to form a thin layer of ice around the inside surface of the bottle. If I had the insulated version of the bottle, I probably wouldn't have had to go through all the trouble. In spite of how slowly the frozen contents melted, the temperature of the contents transferred immediately through to the outer surface. If you like very cold fluids, even the CamelBak 0.75 Liter Insulated Bottle Carrier you can wrap around it won't keep the contents cold for long, but it does make it easier to hold the bottle when the contents are very cold. I recommend getting a strap to carry the bottle, even if you get the insulated carrier. I read reviews about other SS bottles that gave off a metallic taste, but this one didn't at all. I'm sure I'll get a lot of use from it. After I've taken it on several more hikes, I'll review it further.

Great -unless condensation or "seeing" your water level are important, April 21, 2010
|

If you've never tried a Camelbak, then you must. You'll drink more water and actually enjoy doing so.
Bought this to replace my pre-2008 Camelbak (they didn't go BPA free until then). I imagine the stainless steel will hold up to drops on concrete and asphalt better. My girlfriend prefers the plastic model because she can see the water level. I get by fine just shaking it and "feeling" how full it is, but something to consider. Also, I own both kinds and the metal one does form more condensation. Again, not exactly a big deal but a potential buyer might want to know.
You can put your finger through the little hole at top when you are walking. My girlfriend uses a carabiner to hook it onto her laptop bag when she goes to work.
One potential drawback. This thing doesn't fit fully down inside my Mazda 3 cup holder. I own both this size and the smaller one that does fit, but I prefer this one. Camelbaks don't spill if they tip over and I'd rather carry more water.
Oh, and about the company. I once developed a tear in my Camelbak hydration pack (different product). The company replaced it with one phone call and no hassle.
