3 out of 5 stars.  Swagman bike rack, August 30, 2010
This bike rack is ok, but it is a dual fitting ( fits 1 1/4 and 2 ") not just a 2". The piece between the rack and the hitch is 1 1/4" and is not straight. This is not as good as the straight 2" piece. forCycling should advise it fit either hitch not just 2"

4 out of 5 stars.  Very convenient, very sturdy!, August 29, 2010
We have a heavy duty Yakima hitch-mounted bike rack for carrying 4 bikes. I feel we need it for the weight of four bikes. However, it is a pain to install and use for just one or two bikes. If I could just get one of those bike racks like I see on the local buses...

Hey! Swagman read my mind: the XC Cross-Country 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack!

This bike rack is sturdy, even though I had to put it together myself. Once constructed, I store it hanging from a bike mount on the ceiling of the garage.. It's easy to take down, and installs on the 2-inch receiver with a wrench and the key pin in about 1 minute. I leave the wrench in the car, so I won't have to go looking for the right size.

One or two bikes are installed quickly, with the tires fitting into the wheel holders and a clamp bar holding down the frame. I watched the bike as we went over potholes at 70 mph on the freeway (no, I wasn't driving). The bike didn't seem to move in the grips at all.

And the rack has numerous adjustments for leaving it on the hitch and getting it out of the way of loading. However, it does stick out a ways, so make sure you have clearance if you leave it on when parking in your garage or in a place with tight parking... you won't be able to see it in the mirrors when it is folded down.

Nice job of engineering!

5 out of 5 stars.  awsome bike rack, August 27, 2010
Love this bike rack. Just took our bikes to beach 10hr trip and bikes never moved swayed or anything. I can see where some people might be worried about someone being able to steal there bikes. But I just bought a cable with lock and put it through the bikes and secured it to the tow hitch works great. I like how solid the rack was with the bikes loaded on it. I liked the screw pin that connected the rack to the tow hitch. No regrets buying this unit.

4 out of 5 stars.  good unit, August 24, 2010
Good bike transport. Solid, holds well, easy to set up and use. Does not handle training wheels on kids bikes too well. All in all, a good solid unit.

4 out of 5 stars.  Tall bikes and short hook don't mix, August 16, 2010
As some others have stated before, it is impossible to mount a tall bike (mine is 32.5" to top of cross bar) using the short hook. There is plenty of center bar available, but the ratcheting teeth do not start for several inches below the top of the bar. Consequently, the ratchet mechanism on the hook does not reach the teeth before the hook hits the top bar of the bike.

Swagman's only recourse was return the item and buy the XTC, which has a taller bar. They don't offer the longer bar to XC owners. They do have hooks for sale, but nothing longer than the std long hook, which wouldn't work since both bikes are the same height.

My solution is going to be to cut the SHORT hook off and lengthen it by about 8". This will become the new long hook. I've got a welder so it should be pretty straight forward. Might not be pretty, but at least it will work. I'll try to post pictures afterward.

It's too bad that Swagman or forCycling doesn't just say, "If your bikes are approx. the same height and the second bike to mount is over 30", then you should probably order the XTC instead." Would save everyone a bit of hassle.

Edit:

Short hook lengthened by about 8". Good thing I'm not trying to make a living at welding! Too ugly to post a picture, but it works great. :-)

If you do this, make sure the extension is out from the ratcheting mechanism 1/4" or so. You need room for the other hook to slide between the center bar and the hook extension (just like they do from the factory).
