Fizik Microtex Soft Touch Bar Tape, September 28, 2010
By Darren Buck
|
|
Outstanding bar tape. In thirty years of cycling, the Fizik tape is the best I've found. Plenty of length. Moderate thickness. It's grip is relentless, even when wet.
This tape is intended for a thinner application -- I prefer thinner tape, and I can't stand sponginess, so I put some stretch on the tape when wrapping. You can wrap without as much stretch if you like a little extra thickness.
Very tough and much easier to care for and clean up than cork. If you like white bar tape, this is the tape to get. I've always been die-hard "black bars," but actually tried and tolerated the white tape for a while, because it was easier to keep clean. Back to black, and there is no substitute.
The icing on the cake is the very unique textured look and feel of this tape. Really looks good, no sheen, but without being too monochrome. The texturing gives the bars and the bike a very "high end" look and feel.
My absolute highest recommendation.

Hard to remove., December 13, 2009
By Alan Most
|
|
The tape looks great, but if you've had it on for any considerable amount of time and want to replace it, plan on spending 3 or 4 hours removing it. The adhesive causes the small amount of padding to separate from the tape, sticking to your bars. The gooey residue resists solvents. To avoid scratching your bars you will not use a file, but will use your fingernails for a good hour-and-a-half. That's the left side. Another hour-and-a-half on the right side. Then you'll spend another hour (or perhaps days) returning the new tape and exchanging it for a different brand because you will never want to go through that again.

Nice tape for nice people, September 17, 2010
By greenforestcat (southern california)
|
|
This is very nice bar tape. It grips nicely even when your hands are sweaty, and doesn't pick up dirt in the same way that the cork stuff can. I have it on my nice road bike, and it works great. It doesn't absorb much, but oh well, that's what a carbon fork is for, right?
Here's the problem: I don't ride the nice road bike all the time - for daily commuting, errands, etc., there's a bike that's not as nice - an old steel all weather urban assault vehicle. On that bike, this tape is horrible. The lack of shock absorption is a big factor - cork is a bit better for that. The durability isn't there, either - after a heavy downpour or two, the tape started to disintegrate, and after a season of bad weather, the pretty apple green color had completely peeled off.
In other words, it's a nice tape for nice people - I give it five stars for use on nice bikes that aren't exposed to daily weather extremes, but one star for use on old, crusty daily commuter bikes that have to endure a bit more abuse.

The Best, March 13, 2010

The best bar tape. Lasts twice as long as Cinelli. The adhesive is really tough. A little short.

I can't believe I'm using the same tape as the other reviewers!, July 16, 2011

This is Fizik Microtex tape we're talking about, right?
Well, I must be doing something wrong, because wrapping with this stuff was the most miserable experience of my biking life. The adhesive backing took me, literally, ten minutes to get off the shifter bits - and then they immediately fell off the brand new shifters and had to be held in place with electrical tape anyway. Then the main tape, again over five minutes to get the backing started without tearing the whole adhesive strip off. AND, as a bonus surprise, the damned backing is cut every four inches so you get to try to start it all over again!
Then, the tape has almost no stretch to it, so it's very hard to get a good clean wrap - the edges bunch and wrinkle. Working around the hoods was much more difficult than with other tapes. In fact, I've used all kinds of other tape, and while I don't claim to be a wrapping expert, I can typically get a wrap job looking neat and tidy and well spaced in about twenty minutes. I struggled for over an hour with this stuff to get a crappy job that I only hope makes it through the weekend until my Deda tape comes in the mail.
I don't understand how my experience can be so much worse than the majority, but have to throw it out there for what it's worth. Absolutely every element of this tape sucked on install, except the finishing tape which was actually quite nice.

Just Amazing, July 3, 2011
By KennyCyclist

This tape is amazing. This tape is moderately thin. It's perfect for those who like a thickness between electrical tape and cork tape (me). I commute 30 miles round trip five days a week, and I hate the spongy, unsure feeling cork gives me after five or ten miles. Unlike cork, it doesn't force you to hang on to the handlebar harder. It feels like a nice tennis racquet tape. Amazing!

Best tape for me., January 5, 2011
By len (NJ)
|
|
This tape is best for me. The tape is not soft. But it is easy to maintain and keep clean.
Easy to install and is not rips easily at all as other review suggests. The other review suggests that the tape hard to remove. Not in my case. You have to know how to install the tape properly in the first place. I have installed and remove this tape multiple times without any issue.

Excellent quality bar tape, September 22, 2011
By recycleman
|
|
The Fizik tape is easy to install and there is enough tape to wrap even 46CM bars. I found the grip to be excellent and the tape is durable so far. I would suggest using electrical friction tape as a base layer and the Fizik will stay where it is wrapped.

Very Nice Feel - Unforgiving Installation - Too Short, February 15, 2010
By Derp (USA)
|
|
On the pro. side, this product has a very nice feel and appearance.
On the con. side, this product is very difficult and unforgiving to install which renders the product not worth buying. There is not enough tape on a roll to generously wrap a bar, only the bare bones. And if you wind up will too little and attempt to go back, you will end up tearing and distroying the underlying layer (unless you don't use the adhesive).
All in all this product is not worth buying unless you have a simple and small bar, for instance, a bullhorn fixie bar.

Good looking bar tape but not that stretchy, January 19, 2012
By Edwin Ortiz (Brooklyn, NY USA)
|
|
I was getting tired of looking down at my old, dirty, grease-stained handlebars on my road bike so decided it was time for a re-wrapping. After much research, I decided to settle on Fizik's tape just cause I like the quality of their products. This bar tape is really good looking and has small holes, not sure what the point of those holes are, maybe for weight or just pure aesthetics. I'm a beginning cyclist so it was the first time I wrapped my own bars. Be warned! I compared this tape's stretchiness to my old tape and microtex is barely stretchy which probably makes wrapping more difficult. I spent over an hour looking at YouTube videos, wrapping, unwrapping, and re-wrapping my bars...
I know I could have just taken my bike to my LBS but I wanted to learn on my own. For my first time I think I did a good job and this tape feels very comfortable in your hand. Not much cushioning, but I have no problem with that. It comes with a pair Fizik bar plugs (which didn't fit in my bars), what may or may not be end tape with the Fizik logo on it, and two end pieces that you need to stick behind your shift levels before you actually start wrapping. I didn't know what the end pieces were for at first but the point of them is so there is no gap when you're wrapping around your shift levers. Luckily I watched a video that showed me how to wrap w/o them.
Overall I'm really satisfied with this tape, but I'll have to experiment with other types before I settle with this one as my go-to tape.
Four stars for lack of stretchiness.

Simply good tape, September 27, 2011
By Roadie (Texas)
|
|
It is one of the most attractive bar tapes. If you wear gloves, bar tape doesn't need to have much texture. Once you get the proper wrapping technique down Fizik tape stretches well and lays flat. It is as durable as most tapes I have used.

Looks great, June 23, 2009
By C. Bajandas
|
|
The tape looks great and feels pretty sturdy. I replaced a more spongy tape that immediately started to change color from absorbing everything on my hands, this tape will definitely endure better. The only downside to this tape is that it isn't comfortable at all; this doesn't surprise me and I am still happy with it, but if you plan on purchasing this tape be warned that you will need to wear gloves for any long ride.

I was somewhat disappointed, October 8, 2011
By Andrew (DAVIS, CALIFORNIA, United States)
|
|
I've installed several brands of cork tape ("gel" and non-gel) as well as some faux leather tape (Torelli Moda Chunky) and this Microtex is by far the most difficult to install. The material is not very stretchy, and I had to re-wrap a couple of times because I would get wrinkles in the tape.
I have not been on any lengthy rides so I can't comment on comfort and grip although in the short term it feels comfy and grippy enough.
In terms of looks, I have mixed feelings. The white backing shows through perforations and sides and I almost feel like it's a cheap look. I will update after I go on longer rides, but I kind of wish I went with a regular cork tape.
I'll update this after a couple of months and hopefully a number of miles (If I can remember to).

Does the Job, October 30, 2011
By usc biker (Columbia)
|
|
I bought the bar tape for my mountain bike as the bar grips kept sliding off and I also wanted something unique to my bike so my favorite color being green and in need of grip tape I bought these. There is plenty of length, not very hard to remove, if wrapped tightly the first time there is not slippage, if they get wet the don't hold water at all, and they look cool. There are no negatives in the two months or so i have owned them.

High quality handlebar tape, October 22, 2011
By Jeff Parker
|
|
If you are looking for high quality easy to clean tape this is it. Its made of the same artificial leather found in saddles and shoes, and comes in a variety of colours - among them silver. I have used this for several years on my bikes, and it holds up well. This is thin tape, so if you want something cushioned you will need to put gel or something similar underneath. It can be reused a time or two and will eventually started breaking down on the edges where your hand sits - but this seems to take months and multiple rewraps. It was on one bike that still looked perfect after two years - and had not been rewrapped. This is my favorite type as you can easily clean it (Unlike cork or open pore tape). Since I wear gloves and use gel under the tape I could not be happier with it.

What Bar Tape is Better?, April 20, 2010
By Tim D. (USA)
|
|
Fizik bar tape rocks. It is long lasting, stays in place and offers great feel. I ride ultra-distance events -- without gloves -- and this is my pick every time. Even in the rain this tape grips just right. Fizik tape offers the right amount of cushioning. And it cleans up pretty well (not the soft touch but the others) if you get a light color.
One of the other reviewers complained about the tape being tough to remove. I've never had that problem. I've used this on 4 different bikes over the last several years and I've retaped three of them (I ride >20,000 km/year). Granted I don't lock my bikes outdoors but they get plenty of time in the sun.
Before using Fizik tape I thought Cinelli was the way to go. No more.
So back to my original question: what bar tape is better? If you're a Riv-riding part of the 'steel is real' crowd you can get some Tressostar and dress it up with shellac and twine. If not, this stuff is hard to beat!

Rips easily on installation, August 19, 2009
By Cervelo (SLC, UT)
|
|
I bought this tape for my wife's bike yesterday because she liked the yellow color. I very nearly bought some for myself because of the more durable 'vinyl' feel to it. The bar tape ripped along the edges in countless spots. I was discouraged that I had just wasted 18 dollars on a product that was crap, but finished the job so my wife could still use her bike in the meantime. I am a discerning cyclist, and admittedly picky about how my bike looks and feels. I think the Fizik Microtex tape is downright acceptable. It might work for a straight bar, but not for drop bars with curves.

a bit tricky to wrap but worth the effort, November 2, 2011
By seven11 (southern california)
|

its hard to get it to lay down perfectly without creases, and also ran a bit short that i had to go back and overlap less.
however i like the feel and look. seems durable.
only problem is that the white wrap comes with black finishing tape.. fizik if you're listening.. i would have preferred it comes with white.. had to go out and buy some 3m electrical tape.

This was my first time buying and applying bar tape and it worked out pretty good. Seems to be of fairly good quality for the price and the application was very simple. I had a little trouble getting the caps in but with a little brute force they look pretty good.

Great tape, imperfect quality control, July 19, 2011
By G25
|
|
I've wrapped several bars with this tape. It has a great feel, a bit of cushion (less than cork but more than cloth) and looks nice. I've always had way more than enough length, even on fairly wide bars. Those who complain about length must wrap with a pretty serious overlap, or perhaps the length varies from roll to roll. I did have one package (sid blue) that tore along the edge repeatedly when I wrapped with it, no matter how little I pulled the tape. I returned it and received a new one which was fine.

great tape, July 18, 2011
By A. Piasecki (CA)

The tape is comfortable and gripy with great colors just like cork, but much easier to clean. Also it does not get little tears in it like cork so it seems like it will hold up for longer. It is also very light.

Great tape, great feel, April 5, 2011
By RS
|
|
I really like this bar tape (the regular one, not soft touch). It's smooth like cloth but not slippery, and it looks great. Installation was simple and easy, and it is easy to put a lot of tension in the tape without ripping it; much better in terms of this than cork tape, which I have to be more careful with.
However, this tape does basically nothing for padding. The thing is, I like this, so I'm not going to penalize fizik for that. I came from riding with shellac-ed cotton tape, which has about the same amount of padding. If you like lots of padding, then I would probably not use fizik tape unless you buy the gel inserts for underneath the tape. Otherwise, I like the lack of padding and thinner tape - my hands and arms are fine.
Can't say much about replacement, though - I don't intend on replacing it.

Exactly what I was looking for, July 19, 2010
By A. Yoffe (Baltimore, MD United States)

I bought this bar tape because I don't like the cork stuff. This tape has a firm, smooth texture and clean look. There's very little cushion, and I don't even use gloves, but I'm OK with that. My hand slipped off the drop bars once when it was really sweaty, so I just have to be a little more mindful of that.

My Favorite, June 26, 2010
By Clever Name Goes Here (Seattle, WA USA)
|
|
Fizik bar tape is fantastic, the best I have used. Obviously, different people will have different opinions, but personally I love the qualities of this tape over the others I have tried. It is not extremely cushy, but that is my preference, and it has a slightly tacky feel. I find the stretchiness/ compound of this tape appealing to work with, and when done right you can get a really nice fit on your bars even if you are not an expert are taping. It also holds up very well through weather; I highly recommend it.
